I don't know the exact etymology, but since I've taken linguistics, I can guess. My guess is that it evolved from "bott" because people's mouths are naturally lazy and the "u" sound is easier to get to from the "b" sound than the "o" sound is.
*eye roll* PEOPLE are lazy. Most pronunciation developed because that was the easiest way to say it. Notice that just about everyone avoids hard-to-say words or mispronounces them so they're easier to say.
It was speculation, anyway. *shrug* Not going to drag me into one of your little rile-people-up arguments. Ta!
PUT DOWN THE KEYBOARD, TURN OFF THE COMPUTER, STEP AWAY FROM THE DESK, OPEN THE FRONT DOOR AND GRAB YOURSELF A LIFE
Without reading al lthe other posts, I just reply to this.
Just because I (or us general) chose to spend some time here (and also another amount of time watching Buffy/Angel) doesn't mean we don't have a life! I mean, is this really different from any other hobby, say playing tennis or whatever? You make us sound like the pathetic freaks who do nothing but computer away all day, but frankly, that's a little judgemental. And also kind of ironic coming from the guy who believes he has to take a VACATION from LIFE. I don't know what your own experiences with this whole matter were, but normal people can balance hobby (in this case BB and Buffy/Angel in general) and life, without having to abandon one completely.
but we make a mean tea party, cap'nWell quite so brits might be weird BUT you Americans are weird and indeed Lazy -

Maybe people didnt recognize you as a Brit.. you needed to flash the Union Jack a few times and I am sure you would have found a cup o' something. That was very short sighted of you.
I mean I went to the states, couldn't find a good cuppa anywhere.
Coffee wasn't bad, but I like a proper tea.

You have to remember you foreign folks cornfuse us. We likes them Aussies.. they gave us Men at Work.. now I needs me a Vegimite Sammich. In fairness I was asked several times if I was Australian by the Americans I met.
I am not being funny or anything and i respect everyones views, but this place is a place to find like minded people. Sure you can in the real world or however you put it... but i think alot of people do have a life but come on here to escape it and get away from the wreck of a world we live in (in my opinion it can only get worse).
Sure, i think its great to have an opinion but to force it on people is something i think is rather wrong. Sure, theres a real world out there but for some people they may not like it, or may have reasons for finding solice on here, and for other people after a busy day at work or school or college, its nice to come back home, log on and have a good old chat about what you like and escape a little. Sure... Bufffy is just a TV show, but thats not the point... the point is that it brings people together and when people come together and talk or express themselves, if that be in the real world or on here... what does it matter?
I also think that you posted that but you clearly come on here quite a lot... maybe not as much as some, but its clear youve been keeping an eye on this thread, which suggests that you have been checking and thus logging into this lovely virtual world.
Also i just wanna say that some people on here can find answers to questions they couldnt have elsewhere... or have some help and advice from someone they dont know and may never meet, and thus in that sense its a good thing.
Sorry.... i had to get it all out.
I hope that makes sense and i get across what i mean properly.
