I never said it was slang for a British soldier. I never even uttered the word soldier. You did that. And I do believe you are mistaken about "It [slang] is however specifically used for insulting language."

I don't think she should have done it at this time, just as she's promoting a Disney movie and this doesn't really go with the Disney image, had she done it in a couple of months when all the promotion was over I think they would have been far less fuss about it. That's not to say other Disney stars haven't done shoots like this, and probably around promotion time too! It's a fine line and yes she's not showing anything, but it's also not a needed promotional shoot for her

The Toronto Star ran the picture with an article called "Emma Watson's contradictions" and on the next page titled "Celebrity feminists wage war on each other". The subheading said, "That stick the actress says other feminists used to beat her with? She once used it on Beyoncé." The male columnist, Vinay Menon, noted that Emma had made the following comment about Beyoncé a few years ago:

"I felt her message felt very conflicted in the sense that, on the one hand she is putting herself in the category of a feminist, you know this very strong woman and she has that beautiful speech in one of her songs, but then the camera, it felt very male, such a male voyeuristic experience for her."

I have no doubt other columnists are making comments of some sort and she is getting coverage that would cost thousands of dollars to buy in a newspaper. There is an old saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity and she is getting good coverage by being almost uncovered.

I saw an ad on tv for Beauty and the Beast today. I think I might check it out one day, if only to see Emma Watson looking like a beautiful disney princess, cos she can totally pull that off with what I saw! Is it her singing too?

And then I get all confused about that - cos I am drawn to it to watch the pretty dance in the pretty dress with the pretty songs.

I see it more as a fashion type shoot rather then a raunchy one. She probably wanted publicity anyway whatever she did so she got it

When I first saw that picture, it didn't seem risque to me at all. I didn't even give it a second thought. People have been showing that much skin in photoshoots for 50 years. I find it bewildering that some people have manufactured such a nonsensical fake controversy over it.

Honestly, an alien looking in at our world right now would assume that we as a species are capable of self-righteous anger and not much more. It's getting very depressing.

The part I appreciated:

But why is this the one image we are all paying attention to out of a selection of artistic (and, incidentally, fully clothed) shots taken of Watson by Tim Walker? Why does this image with a partial show of breast garner more attention than Watson’s thoughtful discussion of the artifice of Hollywood, the gender pay gap, a love of literature and becoming a certified meditation teacher among other things?

I think Emma Watson just unintentionally made a pretty powerful point about why we still need feminism right there.

And as far as my personal thoughts, I don't think it's that different from say this:

Both those instances (and there's plenty more like both), whether done as an act of misogyny or (ironically) feminism shows why actual feminism is still needed.
