Thoughts on Emma Watson's Vanity Fair photo?

there are plenty of red carpet dresses with plunging necklines that show the same amount of cleavage and they aren't described as "showing tits"
I know right? All those see-through Oscar dresses are much more revealing. I think this photo is pretty tame and the fashion is very blah. A non-event.

First thought: why the frak is she wearing rope?!? 😱
Second thought: What happened to her hair?!? 😵

She isn't wearing rope, it is hemp that hasn't been through the de-sensitizing process.
Third thought is this really news worthy?😉

My guess is that because of Watson's recent campaigning on women issues than the press (or a certain section of it) are jumping on this as an example of her going against that. Which of course is rubbish. Besides which she was over hyped as a feminist icon in the first place.

Think Brie Larson actually showed off more chest on 'The One show' the other night & that was early evening prime time TV........
Don't get what all the fuss is about myself......😵

Brie Larson? That is a type of cheese, right?

Yeah and it bugs me no end that we still have a media who would rather highlight such things rather than talk about their acting or personalities. Sometimes I wonder if we have made that much progress?😉

Looking back at the start of this thread....The picture was from 'The Sun' Hardly the pinnacle of journalistic prowess.

Agreed, but its still worrying because as much as its easy to mock the Sun the fact remains it is the highest selling British newspaper and still retains a lot of power.

Well I figure that most folk that read that rag (& by read I mean look at the pretty pictures) wouldn't know a proper news item if it came up & kneed them in the 'exclusives'

I think it's a pretty terrible photo to be honest, but I don't care about what she's wearing.
People are weird when it comes to former child stars.

Meh. Not much to see here. Other than that terrible hairdo. Lol. It's almost revealing, but you can't see her nipples so it's fine. If she's comfortable showing off that much, than there's nothing wrong. She's not little Hermione anymore, she's an adult woman now. If she wants to show off her breasts, then fine. It's not really a big deal.

Seriously but like where is her nipple, you think it would show haha Other than that ya I agree, what the hell is the big deal?
Well there is the thing, back in the day that I remember the Sun newspaper, it was all about the page three specials.
Of girls showing their personality, both of them.
Come to think of it, I don't think anyone would refer to the newspaper as having a journalistic capability.

The way I understand it, the critics are saying you cannot be a feminist and comfortable exposing your body. Am I understanding that correctly? I would have thought it was the opposite. Don't feminists usually think a woman should have the right to display her body how ever she wants to, but with the caveat that they don't want to be sexually objectified while doing it? Men walk around without shirts and aren't cat called and harrassed so don't many feminists want the same thing? I'm not a Miley Cyrus fan as I'm the wrong generation but the one thing she did that I respected was insisting she could ride around on a wrecking ball naked and it was merely an artistic statement, not a reason to rape her or judge her body or tell her what she could or couldn't do with her body but just her way of expressing her own feelings and owning her own body. But maybe I'm confused about this topic?

I think that's a pretty good reading of at least one of the ideas of feminism when it comes to sexuality. The problem is that there are so many different kinds of feminism. There are some that would say that the more sexually expressive ones are taking things so far to the other extreme that all they have is their sexuality, so the image becomes all about that, and in the end just become like another product that doesn't really address any issues, and then makes those women just as trapped in a set role, as women from the past were.

Who cares what a critic thinks or says, they are only people who have failed and now pass judgement on others. Are they good critics, they can only be as good as the last comments they have made and then that can only be measured by people who read the criticism. So a critic who says you cannot be a feminist if you show of your tits is working on the possibility they are right, and knowing there is a 50% possibility they are wrong.

Ya I had an argument about this with a good friend of mine. I saw the pic and thought "What the hell is the big deal?", where as she saw the pic and her first reaction was "Why must everything be sexualized?". I see both point, but I'm of the opinion that you should be able to do what you want, and if Emma Watson wants to show her breast than she should be able to do so. But then again I have absolutely no problem with nudity, as could confirm all the roommates I have lived with lol. But my friend doesn't even want to see a nipple if she's watching a TV show. So already you have two very different mindset, even if were both feminists.

Haha, yes I knew this. Which is why I'd not be your roommate.😛 lol. I'm not a fan of nudity (only in certain situations 😉 lol) but women show breasts all the time in shows and movies. I don't really want to see it but it's there, it's a part of the human body, it's just whatever to me.

Funny story, the lady I live with, who is like 60, is all about seeing full frontal men, though. I was like 😱. Cause we were watching a movie and they showed the guys butt and she asked why can't we ever see the front. lol. Not to mention she insisted that Arnold Schwarzenegger shows his penis in Terminator or Conan, so then we had to go and look for it in those movies. Thankfully (for me) he does not. lol. So some people just want to see naked people, and others are a bit more conservative. If you want naked people well, ...there's porn? lol. Or Game of Thrones I guess. lol. And thanks to Blaze I now know about the guy from Black Sails 😉. lol.

LMAO I was gonna bring up the guy from Black Sails, I was like you can show it to your house mate, she'll appreciate it

Exactly! My friend will literally not watch Game of Thrones because of the nudity, whereas I watch that show with my mom and to neither of us is it a big deal. Like I can control my hormones! That's the thing, if you don't want to see nudity than there's clearly some shows/movies you should just not watch, which is perfectly fine. But if you go out of your way to watch a show where you know there will be a lot of nudity like GoT, than in my opinion you shouldn't really complain about it.

Yes everything is oversexualised nowadays, but there are a lot worst things than sex on TV or in magazines or whatever. We are so desensitized to violence in the western world, yet people go crazy over seeing a nipple, which by the way Emma Watson doesn't even show by some miracle!
