Twilight's Success=Buffy Feature Film?

To comment on my age comment. It is true that if they left time between S7 and the movie age would actually make sense. David would be fine, he is more in shape in Bones then he ever was on Angel. (Bones is amazing by the way lol). But even with make up, James looks very old. I am not ragging on him, but from S6 he looked in his twenties and S7 looked like his forties. In the new DragonBall Z movie he has head to toe make-up, so I think that would be tricky. NB looked aged as well and so did AH, but not being Vampires, it doesn't really matter.

Buffy could be done so much better with new technology. Watching television alone special effects are amazing. Terminator, Supernatural, the short lived Bionic Woman, all had amazing effects and fight scenes. For a Buffy movie they would have to use such amazing effects, excellent fight scenes, upping the notch to modern cinema. Even though Buffy fans don't care, for the movie to be successful this would have to happen. The script would have to be an amazing stand alone story, for non Buffy fans, as well as satisfying the apitites of us die-hard lovers of the characters. So for the movie to be a success in my opinion this would have to happen:

Breath-taking special effects
Believable cutting-edge monster make-up
Impressive fight choreography
An Epic story plot
The characters would have to have their loved personalities shine through an captivate the people who don't know them yet
The characters would have to stay true to who they were to the show (no drastic personality differences do to "situations that occurred from when we last saw them")
It would have to incorporate intense action, suspense, a compelling story line as well as the drama and character based uniqueness of BUffy. We need it to be good for everyone, men, women, old, young, Buffy fans and none Buffy fans.
It would have to be funny, using allot of modern pop culture references
It would have to do all of this without losing it's Buffiness. The witty dialogue, the interesting characters, and the qwuarkiness would all have to still be there.

I think it can be done. It would have to happen soon again because of age. Although it can't be rushed. But I don't think the time between the TV series and the movie really matters. They are making a Dark Shadows movie, a Dragonball Z movie, they just made the X-Files movie, Star Trek, etc.

I hope it happens...probably won't. But we can dream!

I dont think they would have that big of a problem doing all of those things. Just do a sex and the city intro that catches people up and go from there. Have Giles voice-over do the whole "Into every generation there is a slayer born" thing while showing clips from the show and then they jump into their story. Fighting scenes have for the most part always been good on Buffy so thats not a problem. And well Joss and co. know how to write the charecters so thats no problem.

I doubt there will ever be a Buffy movie made. I would be the first in line to buy tickets if there were, but sadly, I doubt it will ever happen. SMG has always been a big bitca concerning nearly all things Buffy, so I don't think she'd do it.

She's probably right not do it. My thinking has always been that the show is enough. We got 7 seasons...the story is over...the comics suck...making a movie would just be milking the franchise to make more money off the fiercely loyal fanbase who would happily eat up anything that Whedon spit out.

So true. Last thing we want is the Buffyverse becoming a commodity. The only way I'd be down with a film is it had all the original cast and it was a continuation of the canon.

I completely agree.
There's this article claiming that Joss has a script in hand, commitments from the cast, and is just shopping around Hollywood for a green light.

The consensus, however (on Whedonesque and elsewhere) is that this is a load of BS. At Paleyfest JW clearly didn't even know what time period a Buffy film would be set in -- and now he's got a finished shooting script and a cast, just 8 months later, with the 15 other major projects he's been working on? Uh, no.

There would be no way to get a movie out in time to take advantage of "Twilight"'s popularity, and even if they did... it would probably be dismissed as a "Twilight" ripoff.

I don't think Joss is enough of a panderer to rush a movie into production just to rebound off someone else's movie. Clearly the Buffyverse means more to him than that (even if Season Eight apparently doesn't. :fuming: )

Oh god, I would personally LOVe to kick anyone's ass that would DARE call any Buffy project a Twilight ripoff! HA!

Gah, to think that Buffy could be considered a rip-off... sparkling vampires? Really?
The thing is would they sign everyone back on, or just the cast from Season 7? I mean if they're going to shoot for everyone, that means Charisma, Amber, JM, DB, Tony, SMG, NB, Michelle, Alyson, Seth Green. etc. That is a ton of people and to get a storyline to focus on all the characters for 2 hours(i hope), is going to be hard. One thing you will definantly have is a barrage of Bangel fans and a ton of Spuffy fans, how will Joss satisfy everyone if both David and James are in the film? Don't get me wrong i would love for a film and hope one does get made properly and good. But i certainly hope they take their time and make the pacing good, so we can have some good closure and satisfiableness.

Amber and Charimsa = dead and Seth's been gone for years, so they're not necessarily, and one and/or both of JM and DB aren't *necessary* (and both is probably too complicated anyway)
I remember the name of the guy this seemingly bogus story reminds me of now - Richard O Sullivan. He's this guy who used to try to get his name on the internet by inventing bogus stories concerning his supposed connection with some new development in the Whedonverse. You'd hear about these mysterious unnamed sources, then O' Sullivan's name would pop up. Then the story would turn out to be false. I wondered where he went. It would be so funny if we heard from him again. I never expected to, because anybody with Google could quickly discover the guy is full of it.

I'm not saying this one is O'Sullivan, but just in case it does lead to him, want some information so you'll be in on the joke?

Relic agrees: What other show has had the reception that Buffy did on TV? What are the so many of franchises concerning vampires for the studios to chose from? Not to mention buffy has a very good established track record, I just can't say it won't happen.
You're being very particular about TV shows when in fact you have forgotten the biggest resource to Hollywood "“ novels.
In fact Buffy's successful 7 seasons will undoubtedly work against it. A studio will look at Buffy and think "˜this has such a large back story that we're gonna struggle to get new fans while old ones stick'.
You're being naive by not taking into account all this. In one sense I appreciate your optimism, I am an optimist usually, but I am also a realist and Buffy wasn't the huge rip roaring success people on boards like this think it was, its a really big gamble for a studio when they could go for something else that will cost them less in actors fees.

I don't think Buffy needs big stars for a draw like Dukes chose to do. Bo and Luke had been out of circulation for a little while, and short of nostalgia (and I could be wrong here) I don't think Dukes of Hazard has the same following as Buffy or could attract even half the draw without a modern well known actor to draw in the new folks and CHANGE the movie to more of a comedy than the old action show it use to be.
I didn't say that Buffy would need a big star, I said that Dukes of Hazzard already HAD big stars attached.
Ben Stiller AND Owen Wilson both draw very reasonable, generally bankable, returns at the cinema "“ the same cannot be said for any of the Buffy/Angel family, even Sarah. She is a competent actor but has made some mistakes in her choices and this has made her less than great as a leading lady.
The Dukes movie was made during a time when Hollywood was going through its "˜remake a classic TV show' phase, which hopefully thanks to films like Miami Vice and Bewitched is now over.
Nostalgia was part of it however it was a trend. Buffy is still relatively new out there, it doesn't fill any of the requirements above.

You do say something interesting though, You say new fans are a trickle while the series has lost some of its prior fanbase. What do you think caused this loss, a lack of interest in the product (as in the show) or simple inactivity and limited exposure to new things Buffy? How sever do you think the loss when it comes to ginning up new intrest?
Why don't I like some shows I watched?
I have grown up, I have matured, I have realised it wasn't as great. There are many reasons to not watch a show any more and once you have lost it, there is a chance you're never coming back. Look at The X-Files. Perfect example actually.
One of the highest rated TV shows, consistently critically acclaimed and managed 10 seasons and a movie.
This year saw its hotly anticipated and internet speculated release at the cinema to a huge fanfare bringing back the key cast and what happened?
It crashed and burned.

Buffy might have had dwindeling numbers viewer wise toward the end of the TV series (I'm honestly not sure, as I have not researched it.) but the show was not cancelled it was abandoned by the cast and writers, much to the woe of some...and distance can make the heart grow fonder especially when your afforded the opportunity see if the grass has gotten greener since you left.... that damnable curiosity gets many a cat. In short just because Buffy has lost its casual fans who don't eat breathe and sleep Buffy does not mean they would not want to see the movie.
Its viewing figures were dwindling and worse still, its spin off show was cancelled a mere year later.
The people who loved Buffy didn't go over in full force. That would hurt chances BUT also the poor figures of the box office release of Buffy the Movie will come into play too.
To comment though on the casual fan bit, that is a totally irrelevant statement because while you are using it to argue one point it can be made for the opposite. The casual fan might not even be interested in seeing a movie. They may wait for DVD, or couldn't care less to the extent that they will wait for it to come out on Sky, Cable or even TV.

StarWars did not have huge named actors in the original trilogy, for that matter the new saga did not have huge names either. The story and roles were more than enough to generate intrest...in the end I believe people go to the movies for a story more so than the actors (though that certainly does play a part, just not a huge part for me personally....a lesson taught to me long ago by Mr. Lucas)

Not having an actor or actress demanding huge sums of money would actually work in favor of the production studio. Geller knows she's no Stiller as well....and you want to know what else...(not that i can prove it) I think Sarah is afraid to go back to Buffy because she realizes the role is more famous than she as an actress is. Thats the power of a good character.
You have picked up on one point I made and not even correctly understood its context.
Read above.
As per the studio and the large sums.
Ask yourself one question. Why do the likes of Will Smith command $20m per movie and why do the studios pay?
They know that the actor will bring in the audience.
I could possibly agree with you about Geller and her fear BUT that goes further to argue there is less likely to be a Buffy movie, you're actually helping my argument.
IF the studios signed onto a Buffy movie Michelle Geller would be a pre-requisite. IF she is reluctant to do it, why would they give money for the movie?
Ohh and I will say one thing, Ewan McGregor, Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson and Christopher Lee are all pretty big names in fact they all have been the "˜Star' of movies that have been monetarily successful 😛
I'm gonna ignore the rest of the post about Star Wars because if I explain one more time about how you have misunderstood the comment regarding the casting of Dukes, I may have to beat you with a rather large stick

What is keeping this from getting done is Joss and the cast, not fear of a flop.
This is absolute pure opinion, don't dress it up as fact.
You don't even know that Joss isn't trying for the film. While we have "˜between the lines' from the actors as well, we don't have it on record either that they are 100% absolutely never gonna do it.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that, my friend.
Like everything else you have actually said.

I think the fan base for BTVS is deceptive, because you're not just talking about the people who watched it on TV, on the WB, UPN, or later when it went into syndication. I .....

The name Buffy is at least as well-known (I would say better) than say a name like Iron Man was when they first decided to make a movie of it.
This point I feel I answered above to an extent using X-Files as a comparison.

She's probably right not do it. My thinking has always been that the show is enough. We got 7 seasons...the story is over...the comics suck...making a movie would just be milking the franchise to make more money off the fiercely loyal fanbase who would happily eat up anything that Whedon spit out.
I think the Comics are the milking.
Whedons ego must have been hit massively when Buffydom didn't transfer to Firefly, Serenity or even Angel, and when he lost Wonder Woman, his chance to REALLY do the Comic Book hero movie he always wanted to do he realised what the people wanted.

:fuming: )

I don't think ANYONE would class it as a Twilight rip-off. The critics are the ones that would make such comments and they would know which came first.
Internet chatter claiming otherwise can be dismissed as easily as any other because its just fans airing their gripes.
But i certainly hope they take their time and make the pacing good, so we can have some good closure and satisfiableness.

Why would a movie need Charisma, Amber, Seth Green?
Even DB and JM wouldn't exactly be necessary.

OK - this took some time, enjoy🙂

Wait... wasn't Dukes of Hazzard Sean William Scott and Johnny Knoxville and *shudder* Jessica Simpson?
Hi Adder, to make things less confusing I won't quot your quotes of my quotes...here goes...

I like the point you made about the longevity of the series working against it, that makes sense to me. I also see your point with Xfiles...there may have been just too much to work into a movie.

Sometimes the formula does work, though. Take for instance Sex in the City. Similar series length when compared to Buffy. No big time blockbuster actresses, the overall dynamic being a show based on friendships (lets face facts, it was approaching Spinster in the city territory...that other Sarah is not getting any younger. 🙂 ) All in all, a decent comparison I think, more so than Xfiles. I'm curious, did SitC tank? I thought it was doing OK. I dunno though.

I can only speak for myself here, but I never felt the connection to Scully and Moulder that I do for the scoobies. The xfiles overall theme was that the truth was out there. It did not seem to me to be very character driven short of that quest; I think that quest just got dull, especially after the first movie.

As far as beating me with large sticks, I'm still not sure what we are arguing about or what I'm misunderstanding. 🙂

Perhaps I'll try to figure it out to find the right context; but first off lets just say the reason why I don't believe movie studios have to go for high star profiles is because George Lucas intentionally cast the first Star Wars movies primarily with unknown actors and a ridiculous number of movies are made with unknowns in them every year. They are the street cred that make up and coming great talent become a listers. We both realize this.

Production companies are willing to pay for quality, but that is a relative term and an audition might net you great talent without the price tag; your movie could become the talk of the town...."Have you saw Revenge of the Adder with that great actor BotD in it? My God you need to he's incredible."

High budget actors started low rung, Harrison Ford rise to glory or Will Smith as the Fresh Prince for example. SMG not being an A lister won't hurt the production chances in my opinion.

In Buffys case they don't have to expect a huge saleried actor to make a big draw, they allready have an established product that is outdrawing Spiderman among the comic buying crowd who will likely see the movie and buy the DVD. 😛 So I still question how what you said is proving anything or how I'm even misuderstanding it. Please don't get out the stick yet!

I do wonder though, if Sarah would not command an A list salary. That could be a potential hang up.

Are you suggesting instead that since SMG knows her role is the foundation of the show and therefore the movie, she will hold out for much money? Or do you think the production company would be nervous over her apparent apprehension of revising her old role?

I can see the hold out for money working against the chances of the movie happening but not the production company fearing she would somehow suck at the role she's worried about being type casted as....I think Geller can flip a switch and she is Buffy. Thats how I think it works with type casting...good performances that are difficult to escape from for the actor.

As far as dressing things up as fact, my apologies. I remember hearing Joss say that he would not consider doing a movie without Sarah involved. She has denied time and again any interest or want to revisit that role. That leads me to believe that that is a definite reason while your theories over production companies not being interested is an absolute unknown based more off of your opinion.

For the record I never said that this movie is a sure thing or will happen; I just don't believe that studio reluctance is behind the red tape as you do, and that it not happening is not a sure enough thing in my mind to make wagers over.

Hi Adder, to make things less confusing I won't quot your quotes of my quotes...here goes...

Well you'll have to forgive me, I think it is easier to comment on each part by breaking it up while making the comment understandable for others too.

I like the point you made about the longevity of the series working against it, that makes sense to me. I also see your point with Xfiles...there may have been just too much to work into a movie.

Sometimes the formula does work, though. Take for instance Sex in the City. Similar series length when compared to Buffy. No big time blockbuster actresses, the overall dynamic being a show based on friendships (lets face facts, it was approaching Spinster in the city territory...that other Sarah is not getting any younger. ) All in all, a decent comparison I think, more so than Xfiles. I'm curious, did SitC tank? I thought it was doing OK. I dunno though.

I don't think you can say 'more so than the X-Files'.
I would also argue that the fan base to Sex and the City was larger and demanded more from it, as did ALL those involved - Sarah JP lobbied for ages to have a movie done, the creators lobbied for ages, heck even Kim lobbied until the spat with Sarah and then got back on board.

Buffy has had a series, a series spin off (which has to be brought into account because some of those characters may be required in the movie and if that is the case, the development on Angel must take some explaining, thus we go from a 7 season show to a 12 season which blows SitC out the water) and a movie already done before any new movie can be done.

X-Files had a series, a series spin off (which granted crashed and burned but was still done though adding it to X-Files seasons just for fun takes it to 11 seasons) and a movie already done before the last movie was made.

Lets explore the supernatural theme, the genre if you will. Where would X-Files most likely sit?
Sci-Fi? Horror? Drama? Comedy? Action? Romance?
Now the same for Buffy and SitC.

The similarities there are closer to Buffy/X-Files than Buffy/SitC.

The X-Files was about a man searching for the Truth, granted, but to do this he developed interpersonal relationships with people, making himself a tight inner circle he could call up on in his hor of need. Friendship, betrayal, love, loss yadda yadda. The three shows can be argued to have all these in fact any decent show deals with this to certain lengths BUT emphasis on different parts depends on what genre, so I agree that your point is there but I disagree that you take that from X-Files to suggest its closer for Buffy and SitC.

On the basis of what I have said, I would say Buffy is closer to X-Files than SitC and I think a studio would see it that way.
If we were discussing Friends: The Movie it would be different.

I can only speak for myself here, but I never felt the connection to Scully and Moulder that I do for the scoobies. The xfiles overall theme was that the truth was out there. It did not seem to me to be very character driven short of that quest; I think that quest just got dull, especially after the first movie.

It was ALL about character. It was about a man trying to understand who he was, what happened in his past and how this affected the lives of those he cared for. I would argue I am a bigger fan of X-Files than I am of Buffy so your entire comment seems ridiculous to me. But thats in the same was a Charmed fan would argue it was better than Buffy and you(assuming you prefer Buffy) thinking they are wrong - but then thats opinion, and has nothing to do with the over all point of this part of the discussion.

As far as beating me with large sticks, I'm still not sure what we are arguing about or what I'm misunderstanding.

OK. You made a flippant remark about Dukes getting a movie.
I gave you a list of reasons why that happened.
Then you came back as though I suggested Buffy needed big names attached to get a deal.

That is far from the case and now Dukes of Hazzard seems to be a standard and then you went down a big name bent.
I have merely pointed out that Dukes the movie had the big names which helped. I then explained to you that Star Wars had some very well placed stars in the most recent three films.

Now again where you argument fails here is that the cast of Buffy is already established as a group and in their own right.
We're not talking about actors just starting out or who haven't got a name, we have actors already known, so I don't get why you are arguing the unknown bent when I haven't made this about attached names, YOU have.

Among the comic crowd eh?
Is that who the target audience is?
Here is the problem. When The superhero movies have been made they could do Origin stories. They can draw in anyone off the street who doesn't need to know jot about whats going on. Fans of the comic don't mind because its been that long since a TV or Movie has been made that its fine to revamp.
Buffy however, well you can't do an Origin because the actors are too old now BUT you can't just continue because all you get is the comic book and fan crowd and a studio wants more than that.
If you go with Origin you will alienate the fan base which I don't think Joss would do, or you go with continuation which will alienate the rest of the audience which I don't think the studio will do.

In 10 years time, a reboot could be done but Buffy: The Movie now is a lose lose situation.

Again - Stick meet Relic, you're about to get quite close!!!

I have suggested nothing and definitely don't think that.

Well you will have to link me to something definitive not just hearsay and conjecture as I have seen nothing that 100% counts out or in.
I however have never said everything I have said is fact nor dressed it up as such, I have given very plausible reasons why it would/could go the way I believe.

No, you haven't it is a sure thing BUT you have provided arguments as to why is could that have been flawed and I have clearly given you response to the flaws.

I have ALSO read numerous links since Buffy ending and then Angel about the next Buffy related spin-off or movie and they have not happened YET your arguments have been made again and again by other people while mine have pretty much remained the same and my belief nothing will be made with the actual cast has been 100% accurate so far.

oh, Hi! I mean *roar*

Kidding! anyway, it's a shame you can't tonify the comments, oh well, I'll live

Anyway...I thought of something else to say.....

What about SMG. She refuses to talk about Buffy, and I was suprised to see her at Paleyfest, so I'm not so sure she would agree to a Buffy movie. but, would they have a different actress? dunno. Personally, I would love to see tara back one way or another, a problem with having DB and/or JM, they were starting to age towards the end of Angel S5 and Spike and Angel...er....Don't. Unless the storyline is they've miraculously turned human, anywho. I'd love a movie, but for now I'm happy withthe Comics. ok, i'm done now 😀

When has she refused to talk about Buffy? She has always been pretty open when discussing the show after it ended and how much she loved it.

Sarah certainly doesn't hate the show or her memories of it... it's just that she was very much hoping to escape being permanently identified as "Buffy" and having her career opportunities wrecked by that. Putting a bit of distance between herself and the role was part of that.

Here is her last known position on the subject of a Buffy movie; don't know if anything has changed since then (January).

Ya I remember that interview and she gives valid points. But as she said, if the script were good and audience there she would play the charecter again.

Airam agrees: Yeah but what I don't get is why on earth would Twilight and those cheesy little pre-teen books could equal success in film but Buffy wouldn't...

I think I agree with SMG to be honest.

Buffy's best worked in an arc. The story takes time to tell and a movie is only 2 hours long.

Now, if we had a guarantee of a Harry Potter like film franchise length, I am sure we'd have Buffy battling away on the big screen faster than you can say 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!' backwards - which isn't that easy trust me - with the entire cast signed on.
