One article I read said that the British parliament had passed a motion to drop the tax on feminine hygiene products but they can't enact it - it has to go to the unelected parliament in Brussels. Leaving would be short-term pain, long term gain. @Fenrir, whatever you are singing, I will accompany you on the kazoo.
As Taake said, the EU parliament is actually elected.

As for the singing and dancing, I imagine it'll be somewhat like a combination of a world without lawyers and Catholic heaven. With singing I guess. 😛

Here they go with the bloody graphics on the BBC.

Being forced to watch it by the OH. Ugggggghhhhhhhhhh.

You know you love those big sexy graphs Gwen!😛

I have the radio and will be doing some work in a bit so will probaby keep it on all night if I'm not too tired. Anyway, I expect it to be close, but I think the Remain side will come out on top.

Would take a big turnaround now for Remain to win. Am a bit surprised, not just because I thought remain would win but because it looks like there could be quite a big difference. Think remain will need some strong gains in parts of the country outside of London and Manchester to do it.

Scotland voted more Remain than any English region voted Leave. Which, in turn, could spark another Scottish referendum for independence.

Scotland votes to remain, the UK leaves. Same old. Scotland's voice ignored.

Scotland's voice wasn't ignored. It was taken into consideration. Alas, in a referendum the country with 5 million people is going to have less say than a country with over 50 million people.

Gotta say I am mildly surprisedu. Moreso at the sudden drop in the pound.
David Cameron has now resigned.
Is it Christmas already?

Why are you surprised by the drop in the pound, the money men will use any excuse to panic.

Scotland unanimously votes Remain but is dragged out the EU anyway. That's not less say, that's no say.

Anyway. I'm very much anti-globalisation and anti-racist/anti-fascist so it's a rock and a hard place for me. I don't want TTIP, I want power be be broken and smashed to pieces, not centralised. I'm suspicious of all the mainstream parties.

Got to be living in a parallel universe when even David bloody Cameron's resignation doesn't fill me with utter joy. Whoever comes next will be worse. The Eton schoolboys' spat continues.

Fair enough, but people are losing their jobs left right and centre as things are anyway, and only time will tell if this pans out. There were always going to be negative.
I'm a little bit shocked and overwhelmed by this decision. 😳 Obviously it's what the majority wanted, for me personally I didn't.... but I guess whatever happens now, we'll all have to deal with -together- as a United Kingdom....

The country might have the name United Kingdom, but it has not been a united kingdom for over the best part of a millennia.
I'd say we're all very much disunited. Northern Ireland want to vote on reunification and Scotland wants to leave the UK, to be part of the EU again. It's a mess. The United Kingdom is a farce and a laughing stock.

Can't argue with this really.
I've got a lot of angry Brits on my newsfeed this morning...
Not the least bit surprised at the drop of the pound however, probably because there's been so many predictions about it.

And so now comes the prolonged break-up scene

Yeah, the pound dropping was a given if they left. Stocks are horrible as a result as well. So thanks for making me lose money you brits.

Scotland voted to be in the UK first and foremost. They had a referendum about it. They don't get to pick and choose the good parts of the union and ignore that bad ones.

That said, I don't mind if they leave at some point. They are their own nation.

Also; laughing stock? From what I hear a fair few EU nations are clamouring for their own referendums.

I'm finding the drama somewhat amusing. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Spot on, on both points! The result was cast in Scotland and they knew at the time that there was a chance that England would vote to leave the EU in the future. They should respect the vote and move on.

Yeah a lot of people I know on facebook are posting malodramatic posts like "shame on Britian" and saying things like they are devasted etc...🙄 Same as the Scotland thing the result has been cast and people on the remain side need to respect that.

Think my only issue with the result is that I feel that a lot of people who voted leave did so out of immgrimation concerns and very little will change on that front IMO, and that would have been the case no matter how the vote went. But also I think a lot of people who did vote leave did so because like me they feel the EU is an outdated system and a bit of a mess.

One thing one of the remains voters has said is that by leaving we are giving the Government the power to sell off the NHS. Well surely if they want to do that they will anyway, I don't see how being in the EU would give us anymore power to stop that. Its an England issue not an EU issue. I think some people give the EU too much credit its not that powerful.

Its already coming back up though. Was always going to be a drop in the aftermouth.

Well, some people probably are devastated as their jobs will be directly affected. I'd say that's pretty fair.

Cameron's gone. The Tories have a majority of what, 12 MPs? It wouldn't take much for this split over the referendum to lead to defections or further disagreements. This could actually cripple the Tory machine.

@GwenRaiden it doesn't matter because Scotland as a whole voted to stay in the UK, therefore their part of the UK and they voted as part of the UK last night, so they have no more or less rights than any other part of the UK. The vote was to remain in the UK and last nights vote was for the UK to leave the EU and people need to respect that.

Good point.

Phew, okay. So definitely not a UK issue.

Hey, we have different paliments, that's not my fault. Scotland want it that way too it seems.

Yeah, 55% of Scotland voted to stay in the UK. A lot voted because they were promised that their votes would now count for something. Wrong. As seen last night.

Being in the union is like being married to an alcoholic junkie with a gambling problem.

One of the few positives I've gained from the EU ref is that Scotland may just get independence afterall. Our votes mean nothing in the union. Previous indyref no voters may be swayed now more than ever.

But what promises were they made about the EU? This is what we're talking about here. They knew at the time of voting that the UK might vote to leave the EU and they took the risk anyway. You have to be fair to the people in Scotland who voted to stay in the UK, and to the people in Scotland who voted to leave the EU last night. Its a complex and messing system I agree with you there, but that's just the way it is. Lets respect other people and how they voted. Time to move on.

I don't know much about Scottish politics, so do you think if Scotland got another referendum, and they left the UK, would they want to join the EU? Would they meet the criteria and would they want the euro? I know you can't speak for the whole of Scotland, but what do you think?

GwenRaiden

The Scottish Nationalist Party would want to rejoin the EU. Not sure about currency. In the end, I wouldn't want the SNP running the country anyway. I want independence, not the SNP.
