Lol, I got to fly the Riley flag, because apart from me and my mother, he hardly has any fans lol.

Good. I salute you in your effort. 🙂

You're completely wrong, though. 😛

I don't think he was more of an ass than either Angel or Spike. All three had their ass moments. Buffy should just date Oz.

Yeah, but Angel had arse moments, but they were justified. For example in S2 he fires his friends and sets Darla and Drusilla on fire, but to be fair he was struggling with trying to atone for a century of unthinkable evil and being constantly tortured by an evil law firm trying to drive him insane - "why is everyone so surprised that it's working?" - and he genuinely thought they were better off without him. And then when he realised he was wrong, he apologised, humbled himself and began working for them.

Riley on the other hand grew up with with a nice, comfortable, middle-class life and family, joined a morally ambiguous unit that he was too stupid to realise was morally ambiguous until Buffy pointed it out, and even though he acted like a close-minded jerk, Buffy was usually the one who ended up apologising. Then he whined that she wasn't paying him enough attention, starting using vampire whores and then blamed Buffy for it.

As for Spike, yes he was an arse, but (in the early seasons at least) got away with it because he was just so awesome and funny. Never underestimate the power of humour in making a character likeable. Riley on the other hand was about as exciting as white bread and as funny as white bread. He's so dull he sucks all the imagination out of my similies, so I just repeat the same one again and again. So his arsehole-ishness stands out more, as it's his only notable character trait other than "generic".

(PS. I'm very sorry, I really shouldn't be arguing against an unpopular opinion, they are what this thread it for. I just really, really hate Riley. He's the only fictional character I have ever hated with such intensity and consistency).

But white bread isn't funny at all...Oh, I see what you did there. ;-)

Lol I don't agree about Riley, but this post was hilarious! Props.
Then he whined that she wasn't paying him enough attention, starting using vampire whores and then blamed Buffy for it.

That was pretty cringe-worthy yes, but it did lead to the departure of Riley (and no once he was gone I did not miss him even if I had grown fond of him... kind of like a pen that you chew on 😉) so at least that's a plus.

I can still see his appeal to Buffy though.

He made mistakes, but I think the point Xander tried to make was he was still a decent guy at his core and she shouldn't let him go because they could have still had a good future together. You can argue the "decent guy" part I suppose, but Riley generally was a good boyfriend. Generally.

He wanted to help her thru and be there for her and yep, she shut him out. Still doesn't excuse the vamp hookers for me. That was just gross.

Riley was nice and pretty good for Buff, she just didn't love him.
I think some people are completely forgetting one aspect of Riley: Buffy ignored the shit out of him in S5. She literally slammed the door in his face one time. Yea, I know her mom was having complications, but it wouldn't've hurt Buffy to talk to him every once in a while.

Ah, let's try the karma giving again: He wanted to help her thru and be there for her and yep, she shut him out. Still doesn't excuse the vamp hookers for me. That was just gross.

I can never, will never, understand Cangel. (and not just because "Cangel" sounds like an oozing wound)
And no it has nothing to do with Buffy.

I simply think that "Cangel" was a cheap solution.

First of all - I think Cordelia's and Angel's friendship was one of the most beautiful things on tv. But much like his friendship to Wesley and Gunn I viewed them as family. Which in my book rates far above and beyond any kind of romantic love.
There was trust and devotion there that Angel didn't have with anyone else.

However... their 'love story' felt cheap and forced. partly because they had to have Fred running around going "meant to be, meant to be" and Cordy going back into visions just so she could bond with Angel about his Connor experience. pffft...

But also because the whole thing reeked of the writers going "oh hey, here's a way for them to have a love interest without us having to introduce new characters.. yay!"

Frankly I felt that the actors had zero sexual chemistry.
We were just expected to accept their pairing because she's shapely and he's shapely and oh most importantly... they were both just there.

I firmly believe that Cangel would never have happened because it would never have worked even without the Connor thing.
Their "love" just ruined their whole relationship to me which saddens me cause I loved them before that whole mess.

although I do believe the actors had chemistry, I agree with what you say...I just think the writers wanted to make a love interest for Angel cause Buffy has Spike in s6 and so...who is available? Cordy is!

I'm not sure I agree completely with this, but I do agree that the whole 'WE NEED A LOVE INTEREST FOR ANGEL' always was forced after Buffy.
I know that part in "Where The Wild Things Are" where Willow touches Tara's leg and Tara jumps away and says "Don't touch me! It's just DISGUSTING!" is supposed to be weird/sad but i always crack up laughing.

that entire episode was laughable

haha, I always laugh too
Speaking of laughing, I always laugh when Willow says to Dawn "Mom, Buffy, Tara... waaah." I know I shouldn't and it's horrible but I just was so glad someone called Dawn out on her whining. Besides that; Aly delivers that line so hilariously 😛

that was maybe the only part where I said, "That Dark Willow is allll right."
I knoow! Riley was so lame! hated that he never got that Buffy didn't need someone to protect her. I never thought he treated her like an equal.

I kind of always saw that as the plot of his character development. One of his very first interactions with Buffy after he finds out she's a vamp slayer, is something like "you're so strong for a girl"... not in those exact words. But something to that affect. And I think that that is what mounted his insecurity. He was arrogant, yes. But he was also used to be the big hero... keeping the world safe. Keeping the little ladies out of harm's way. And he spends the rest of their time together struggling with that.

I couldnt help but feel for him. I think he genuinely loved Buffy. But there was also that element of insecurity and perhaps jealousy. Frankly, up until Buffy came into his life, he had it pretty sweet. He was "Head Boy" (in Wesley terms... hehe) And here this chick comes along and almost single-handedly turns his world upside down.

I said it before, that I love their relationship's development. I thought it was incredibly well thought out and well played. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know what it's like to be in a toxic relationship. To be with someone that you're completely smitten with, but who simultaniously makes you feel insecure. Not necessarily through anyone's fault.

I don't think their relationship would have worked. No matter what. He was too insecure, and she was too consumed with her slayer duties. Perhaps it solidifies the idea that Buffy really is on a different plain... on a far more equal playing field with vampires than with humans.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Wow. VERY well said!!

My unpopular rant for today is...

We didn't get enough of SID! Why did they have to get rid of that kick ass dummy! Imagine the Scooby Gang having their own dummy-tastic demon slayer? 🙁 Glory vs Sid anyone? Or even better... Puppet Angel against Sid! Lmao.

That's an interesting point. I agree on some levels, I think that the story is well thought out; my problem is not that Riley is in the show, my problem is with his actions. But yes, Riley and Buffys relationship really are realistic, and I don't know if I would have it play out any other way, Riley's reaction is kind of understandable considering where he's been, I agree. A lot of guys would probably react in the same way in real life.

But I guess I see it a little more from Buffys side and feel that she was treated really unfair, which makes me so mad! It was not her fault at all that he got insecure, and I don't think it's right for him to try to lay the blame on her, even if it is just out of hurt and confusion. That's why I don't like him. But I think he had a good part to play and was important for the story to develop. And I think it's great when you get so involved with a show that you actually like or dislike the characters. 🙂 Joss and the writers did a really good job! 🙂

Puppet Angel loses his soul, becomes Puppet Angelus and the only one who can stop him is Sid? I like the cut of your jib.

"Zalos agrees: Lol! WAIT how do Puppet Angel loses his soul?!"
One could only hope that it's someone does a spell or some mojo and not...anything else. haha

For the Riley rant I think that Riley just wanted to be Buffy "Knight in Shining Armour" and protect her. After all she had been through he wanted to be that but Buffy didn't need it. She could take care of herself and had a lot more strength than Riley which I can see why made him feel so insecure. As well I think he wanted to understand what Buffy had been through when it came to Angel but it back fired on him big time when he got himself bit by a vampire. At the beginning of season 5 you can see their relationship is just doomed. Buffy stops communicating with him and puts him on the back burner and Riley just goes too far with trying to understand.

LOL Sid wigged me out. I remember when I first seen that episode and then I watched Nightmares a few episodes after.

Scared me half to death 😛

Idk if this is unpopular but I just really need to vent...
Stephen Mooney and Nick Runge's art in After the Fall is terrible! Okay, I take that back, it's fairly good, but it just does NOT measure up to Franco Urru's. Every page of Urru's AtF I find myself thinking how Angel-reminiscent it is, but Runge and Mooney's art just does not make me feel that way. Out of Whedon's AtF (1-17), Urru was only the artist for 8 issues. When I think of Angel: AtF I think of Urru, not this crap I'm finding in the HC: Vol. 3.
Wow, I'm sorry, I just needed to get this off my chest. 😛 Feel free to agree or disagree as much as you want.
