Vampire Diaries rips off Buffy?

Okay, the only thing is, they don't show the whole scene. Elena freaking dies after that. Yeah, she comes back, but not because Bonnie brings her back. (Bonnie is one of the witches in TVD) Elena comes back because her father sacrifices himself.

I, too, feel the need to stick up for TVD here. The scenes are not the same. I could edit a lot of scenes from a lot of different shows and/or movies where two people say I love you, and someone else says close your eyes. It's just because she's human and dating a vampire that people wanna make TVD out to be a BTVS ripoff, but it's really, really not. There are some of the same elements, yeah, but there has to be... In all Vampire shows, there are similar elements.

I see that they're similar, but the context, reasoning, and emotion behind it is totally different. Mainly because Stefan knows what's going to happen, and Angel was clueless and going to die anyway.

I completely agree. A lot of people are saying they're similar to Buffy/Angel, but their relationship as a whole, not just this scene, is really so much different because the characters are different.

I'm remember thinking that when I watched it the first time. I think it was just meant to be a tribute to Buffy. They are both great shows though.

I love the vampire diaries. It's one of my favorite shows. If you've seen seasons 1 & 2 in it's entirety you will realize the show is not a rip off of Buffy. That scene that has people yelling "RIP OFF" is not a rip off of Buffy. Elena was never going to kill Stefan in that scene.

The clip you saw is from the Season 2 episode The Last Day episode 20. Elena is giving herself over to Klaus (a vampire/werewolf hybrid who's using Elena to break his curse. The blood of the doppleganger, a vampire, and a werewolf breaks the curse. Elena agreed to give her life for the ritual as long as no one else got hurt. Unfortunately things didn't go as planned because Damon got overly confident and screwed things up). She was saying her goodbyes to Stefan incase she didn't survive. A spell was put on Elena to keep her from harm but there was no way to know if it would work or not.

That is all I am going to say because otherwise I'll say things I shouldn't.

Here is an informative video that explains why they said their goodbyes and what is going on. The video posted above is meant to look like a rip off. That's the point of the video. There's a difference between a show actually being a rip off and a person wanting others to think it is by only posting 2 minutes of a scene that explains nothing about the episode. It's a deceptive video.

I've never watched TVD so if you watch the scenes like this back to back, from my point of view it looks pretty dang similar. Not just the words, but the close up and intensity! True, I have no emotional investment in the VD characters...... and I cried my heart out in IWRY.

Having said that, I just watched it twice and I laughed out loud after Stefan says "I love you". CHEESE! 😱 *throwing hands over face to block TVD diehards backlash* LOL

Well I don't think it was copying and a rip off. If we went by the same lines ect. in tv everyone would hate one of their shows. To be honest I wonder if they even think about Buffy? I mean yes people remember it but Kevin the creator has done some pretty memorable things and I think he would want to get ideas from those first lol just saying.

Now about the pulling it off better I don't know if I agree. David as much as I love him wasn't the best actor ever in the early seasons of Buffy (he did well but there was room for improvement especially with emotional scenes) where as Paul already has such great talent they are around the same ages oddly I think when they started. Paul can knock a scene out of the park and when he brings those tears that is it lol. Sarah may be better than Nina but Nina does well for herself.

Like a lot of fans of The Vampire Diaries when you watch the episodes it makes more sense.

Well, like you said, you have no investment in the characters. If you did, you would look at these scenes completely differently.

"Close Your Eyes" is one of the most memorable Bangel scenes, and one of the most memorable scenes in BtVS. This.. this is not such an important moment for Stelena, and this is not one of their best scenes.

I hate when people compare tv shows, because every show is special in it's own way. Even if there are similar scenes. To people who don't watch TVD this probably seems like a copying or a failed try to copy the scene, but for us who do watch the show, these scene is about the couple, and about characters.. this is Elena's way to say goodbye to Stefan before she gives her own life to save people she loves. If you watched the whole episode, their talk before the scene, the day they shared together, you would realize this scene is the perfect goodbye.

Hmmm....probably true. :)
agree

I will admit that I watch VD, and it is at times entertaining. I remembered when I saw the scene between Stefan and Elana. I searched the internet all over to see if people had noticed the Buffy rip off. I looked for youtube comparisons, and was even going to make one myself. What is funny though is that I never saw the "close your eyes" part as being the rip off (which now i do), but the whole scene was straight from Amends!!! Stephan is waiting outside for the sun to rise to kill himself, because he is a danger to Elana, and then walks in Elana to convince him not to (sound grossly familiar)!!!!! The reason I wanted to show the comparison so bad was to prove how amazing Buffy is compared to this modern vampire crap. Even though the scene is so similar, the two girls reactions were completely different. Elana is all mooshie and overly done, and she just reminds him how much she loves him and how much good he can do. Even though Buffy said something similar, Buffy also basically said, "Go ahead and do it, if you are that weak". Buffy's response had so much more umph to it, and was so much more clever and thought out. Plus, SMG's acting in the Amends scene is untouchable and heartbreaking.

I did catch last week's episode of TVD, and actually thought about how similar it was to Twilight; there's the whole vampire/werewolf stuff, and two guys in love with the same human girl, and all the drama, and it's set in a forest...I don't think it's intentionally trying to rip off Buffy. Rather, the writers of the show are probably fans of Buffy, and are therefore influenced by the show and well, it shows in their writing. I doubt it's intentional. Also, all vampire shows have similar themes. For instance? Vampire in love with a human girl? That's in literally every vampire show.

And in general, to be honest, I was pretty bored with this episode. I had not seen the show since the first season, so I tuned in hoping it had improved, but sadly, it hasn't. The only scenes I found remotely interesting were the Damon/Elena scenes. Damon is completely loathsome, but interesting regardless.

Just out of curiosity, are there any shows or books with a vamp girl in love with a human guy? Much more uncommon, I think. And potentially more interesting, if the female vamp isn't goody goody.

Well, Julie Plec is a big fan of BtVS, she said it herself.

But I do not support opinions that TVD is a response to Twilight. Both Twilight and TVD are based on the books, but TVD was published back in 1991. The original series that is. TVD is really not following what's happening in the books, but some things still remained the same.

I'd have to disagree... I've seen clips of that guy acting, and I just find it to be too over-done. Like the "Close your eyes" scene, it took him like 10 seconds to finally reply. Like what was with that long dramatic pause? I think David's acting is a lot more smooth and natural, and he gets to the point. 😛

I think that's the beauty in Paul's acting. David never had the ability to make me cry. Most scenes in TVD that I cry on while watching is where Stefan doesn't say anything.. they just zoom in his crying face, and all the words other actors would have to say are there. It breaks my heart.

I don't think it was him who decided to say it later but regardless I still think Paul does better especially for being early. Usually you have to deal with the actors not being so good when they are first in their roles and I never had to deal with that regarding Paul imo. David as much as I love him the more time goes on I think some of his early acting wasn't that great.

That is it right there exactly one of the big reasons. Paul pulls it off so well and just makes you feel for him. Some of David's scenes early on made it seem like he was trying to hard or didn't know what to do so you end up feeling more of Buffy's pain because Sarah was already at a good stage by that point. Back to point but yes I agree 100%. It also may have to do with the fact that is an actor is supposed to be crying and I don't see tears on a seriously emotional moment I don't get into half as much.

So because David didn't make you cry, he's a worse actor than the other guy? :S
I wouldn't say that regarding me I won't speak for PrincessBuffy but it is hard to explain. There is nothing worse than watching a television show and a emotional moment and the actor not really having any emotion. Does that make sense? Sometimes David couldn't portray the proper emotion or when he did it seemed a little over-dramatic thankfully he found his stride. So yes I would say basing it on both of the scenes Paul was a better actor. Do I think he is a better actor overall? Don't know yet he hasn't been around as long as David so it is hard to tell but just from those two scenes if I had to choose I would choose Paul.
