I think it varies hugely by where you live, I could eat very well with food that hasn't had to travel more than 50 miles, I could easily eat well with less mileage than that. However I'm in farming country, where you go down the road and you can smell the apple orchards as the apples are all dropping now. Other times of year it's rapeseed, wheat, barley, blackcurrants, strawberries, and all sorts. People who live in cities or in places where there isn't as much around have to import more food, also it's about personal preferences, do you want to eat only locally, or only food you have grown yourself, do you want to go organic, or do you eat what you can afford and try and do your best to cut out anything that has animal products. I think for most people it's the latter, you try and do your best but can't afford, either health or moneywise, to only eat things that you have personally grown, so you know the whole life of the fruit or the vegetables.
