I would argue that Angel and Angelus aren't different people—but only because Angelus isn't a person in the first place. You need free will to be a person, and you need a soul to have free will. It makes me think of kintsungi, the Japanese tradition of putting broken ceramics back together with gold. Liam was the original clay pot. Angelus is shards of broken pottery. Jagged and dangerous, but incapable of holding liquid. Angel is the pot remade with gold joinery. The presence of the demon and his history are still felt, but he is a stronger, better person for all of that.
