What do the writers want us to believe about Spuffy sex?

Like a lot of others have already said, I think the depravity of it had less to do with the sex itself than with the dysfunction of the relationship. What she let Spike do to her was get inside and draw out the darkness of which she was ashamed. She let Buffy go and indulged in the Slayer. Her season 6 fling with Spike was WRONG. It went against everything for which she'd ever stood -- and she *liked* it. Not only did she like it, but it was the only thing that she liked. It was the only thing that made her feel alive and real. No wonder that made her feel ashamed. What she let Spike do to her had less to do with the sex acts themselves than with the meaning of those sex acts: she let him hold a mirror up to herself and she didn't want to like what she saw.

Again, he wasn't souless and he couldn't have killed her in an instant because of the chip - just because he found out that he could hit her doesn't mean to say that could have bit her. Anyway, why would you want to kill the person you're in love with and having (apparently) wonderful sex?

I think you're getting your seasons mixed up.

Spike acquiring his soul is the last scene of the last episode of season 6, he was involved in sexual shenanigans with Buffy from a couple of episodes after Once More with Feeling which is early season 6.

So, that statement isn't 'pointless'.

As for his Chip, when he finds out he can hit Buffy, he immediately terrorises a woman and attempts to kill her before he realises its only Buffy.

Would he have killed the woman? We can't say but to say he isn't capable of it when later on in the season he shows he doesn't understand the difference between right and wrong with the assault on Buffy.

Spike is not as bad as other Vampires however he is still a soulless Vampire and for the Slayer to participate in sexual intercourse with a being as such it would/does still disgust.

So each of my statements are correct in regards to the state of the relationship.

The only thing that is my opinion is how it affected Buffy and if she felt disgust at the actual sexual acts or if she was disgusted at sex with a Vampire.

I (obviously) never interpreted Buffy's outfit's offer as teasing... and if it was, it seems rather cruel to offer your man, with whom you've been sleeping for a better part of a year, outfits, and not mean it. Teasing doesn't cover it. That's just... no.

But you make a good point: Buffy is strong as hell. She goes all out in any physical respect, a mere man will get hurt. Perhaps that's part of the root of why Buffy and Riley never would have made it in the long run, she'd never be able to go all out with him for fear of hurting him. She did kick him across the room. I'm not sure what the sexual equivalent of that is, but I'm certain no man wants to put his bits in that kind of position. (There is no way to say that without it sounding dirty. Sorry.)

With someone slightly more than human, though, she CAN (and clearly does) go all out. She keeps wanting to pretend she's just a girl, but she's not. If she's going to have anyone on the same level as her, it's got to be someone more than human. Stronger. And Spike can be that. Sure, until he gets his soul she can't really trust or love him, but at least she doesn't have to worry about hurting him in the sack, and can indulge any sexual whim she's got. Including quite literally bringing down the house.

I guess part of my wondering about all this is that Buffy and Riley had some pretty hot sex scenes, and some references to their between the sheets action made it seem that they had a fairly energetic sex life. In fact, I recall being surprised that someone with so little experience as Buffy, was so quickly uninhibited and practiced as she seemed to be with Riley.

So, from the information we were given, it wasn't like she came to Spuffy all innocent etc, which made her comment to Tara even more confusing. I hadn't seen her do anything with Spike (other than cuffing HIM) that seemed beyond what she'd done with Riley. The tone yes, the acts themselves, not so much.

I think if we were supposed to think they were into way kinky S/M stuff, we could have been given a shot or two of the implements, even if not in use, but none of that was alluded to. Nor did either look any the worse for wear from their sex...though Spike looked like hamburger after she'd beat him up.

One of my fave Spuffy sex quotes is "Did you get a new rug?"
"No, it just looks different when you're underneath it."

She rubs her hands, when she talks to Tara the first time in Dead Things. So I guess she was cuffed too.

I've heard others say that so I've watched and rewatched that scene and I don't think that's it. No marks, and she had just said "never" to Spike about the trust thing. Then they showed HIM cuffed, but not her.

I really think the writers would have been clear if she'd changed her mind, since they'd made an issue of it, and the cuffs represented trust, a theme that came up over and over again in Spuffy.

I might be wrong, but I've tried, and can't see what she is doing with her hands as anything more than nerves.

Anyone else on this scene?

I'd like to rewatch it...and see that I think. Don't think I ever noticed her rubbing her hands... Very interesting though...

That is a great quote...Personally, though, as much as I love Spuffy sex...Dead Things is one of my least favorite episodes. That balcony scene is so creepy...
 
I believe for the most part their intention in showing us Spuffy sex was to mmake us readily aware of how messed up Buffy was in the brain at the time...I always kind of cringed at the lack of self-respect...

I'm pretty much in love with JM. I got to meet him...and pretty much passed out lol but thankfully, I kept my cool. He is so hot. And nice. And a great actor...

Well, if you're attracted to funny-looking guys, so are the millions of other Spike fangirls out there, including myself. In fact, I think that, back when he was in his peak Buffy days and in the Spike character, James was seriously the most attractive man on the planet (not so much now that he's aged, doesn't have the platinum hair, and doesn't use the British accent.) Maybe it's the cheekbones you could cut diamonds with, maybe it's the sparkling blue eyes, maybe it's the perfect abs...

Okay, now we're getting way off-topic, so...yeah, Spuffy sex was supposed to be bad. Yes indeed.
