What is the single most shocking moment in the Buffyverse?

It can be anything, really. Two people getting together, a big return, anything. I think for me, the most pure shocking moment was Caleb carving out Xander's eye in "Dirty Girls". We see deaths all the time in T.V., but it isn't often that we see something that...gruesome. I think as a collective audience we've grown so accustomed to death on television that it takes someone we really care about dying to have a real effect (for example, how many nameless Sunnydale citizens get eaten without anyone really caring?). But seeing Xander get mutilated like that just felt more real, if that's the right word. I just re-watched that episode last night, so it was on my mind.

I agree. I think that the core four have put their lives on the line a lot, but this is the first time it's really apparent how very dangerous it is.

Agree, Xander's eye was a shock but I always wondered why Caleb only took out one eye. I'm glad he didn't blind Xander but it did seem odd...

I just spotted this thread, this moment jumped out instantly, purely horrid.
Tara getting shot. She was my favourite character and I had no idea t was coming. Shocked pretty much sums up my reaction the first time I saw it.

I'm not entirely sure, but to me it probably was Jenny's death. Or actually not her death, but rather Giles finding her.

I've seen this moment so many times, I've cried every time, and will do every time is see it in the future.
All of the moments mentioned are really shocking I agree, but I think I'd have to say the end of "I Was Made to Love You" where Buffy finds Joyce dead on the couch. That was more shocking to me than "The Body" itself, because it just ended there, and left you going, "wait, what just happened?"

Shocking - I'd definitely have to say Tara's death, hands down. Xanders eye was definitely shocking too though. Or maybe Willow stripping Warren.expect that's more shockingly awesome!

Ooo, I forgot about Warren. That was pretty "whoa, wait, what?" as well.
For me it was when we find out Angel wasn't really Angelus in "Enemies". When he hear him say "Second best" and Faith whips around in shock, it is just awesome. Also when Caleb gouges out Xander's eye and when Giles shows up to knock Dark Willow on her ass.

For me it was definitely when Jenny Calender got killed. It was so unexpected, showed me that Angelus was completely evil, and was the first real time we got to see how twisted Joss is

Argh, there are so many moments to choose from. I think maybe Giles appearing at the end of Two To Go was the biggest shock for me.

This isn't exactly a big moment but when Giles called Willow a rank, arrogant amateur I was pretty shocked. I'd just never heard him so angry with her.
Buffy finding her mum dead and the episode just ending like that was also a big shock.
Spike & Anya going for it in the Magic Shop - I hadn't seen that coming (well, as they started to get drunk together and bond over broken hearts you got the idea where it was going!)

That scene with Willow and Giles was really surprising. I'd forgotten that

Giles shouting at Willow was insane, I felt like i'd gotten in trouble. lol. Also 'Ripper' is calling the kettle black a tad there!
I was spoiled for a lot of the series, but Jenny's death was still shocking and terrible, but in an awesome way.

I can't pick one moment, so here is my list.

AtS
Doyle's Death
BtVS
Anya's Death
Tara's Death
Jenny's Death

hmmm I'm noticing a theme here lol!!

For me it would be either Jenny Calendars death, or Cordelia giving birth to a giant octopus that turned into a black woman who looked like neither Cordelia or Connor... that was pretty shocking to me.

reminds me of the line from Men In Black: 'Congratulations Reg, it's a...squid'

For me it was Buffy dying. I didn't expect that at all, I thought she would of been able to save Dawn right before she was about to get cut. I mean the show was called "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" so never in a million years did I expect the star of the show to die. 🙁 It still gets to me whenever I watch The Gift.

Jenny's death definitely was a shock, I really didn't see it coming. She had such an intense chase scene, I thought she would have gotten away or someone would have shown up and helped her...

And Anya's death was definitely a huge shocker as well. It just... happened.

I think I'd like to revise my answer to "all the deaths."

Because the more I think about it...most of the deaths on the show were pretty shocking and sudden.

Curse you, Joss Whedon!

to be honest all the deaths in buffy have shocked me in some way but if i had to choose it would probably tara's death, it just came out of nowhere!! and was so unexpected.
she didn't even realise she'd been shot at first, in fact im not even sure she realised at all she died so quickly.

It was sad because willow had just got back on her feet and seeing them unpack and being happy only for it to be ruined by her death.

that for me was a shocking buffy moment.

Oh gosh! So many!! Certainly all the deaths! In addition:

Connor showing up suddenly all grown up
Connor drowning angel at the bottom of the ocean
Fred tazing connor
Gile's "I'd like to test that theory"
Spike getting his soul
Angel revealing he and buffy were acting in Enemies
Amy turning out to be her mom in The Witch
Oz being the werewolf
Ben and Glory being the same person
the home office being LA
Wes having Justine in his closet
Lorne shooting Lindsey

there's probably more.

what can I say? I shock easily. 🙂

Those are all good, lol. YOU READ MY THOUGHTS!
Spike's death was pretty shocking for me. I mean, everything just started to look up in his life; he's finally gotten Buffy even. Then the amulet comes. Don't get me wrong, Sunnydale was saved but Spike had to sacrifice himself to do so.
HE'S A TRUE CHAMPION!

All of Sunnydale collapsing in Chosen was pretty surprising too.
