What it means to be a witch

Well I will admit that the series didn't cover enough about wicca at least during what I guess would be season 1. They started exploring wicca when Cassie was trying to figure out who she is. Yes it is not much of an example but that is the one weakness of the series.

It's easy to get confused on the Wicca/Witchcraft thing. I've read a little bit about it, and I'm still confused. Here's a bit from Wikipedia on the cause of the confusion.

It (Wicca) was first publicised in 1954 by a British civil servant named Gerald Gardner[1] after the British Witchcraft Act was repealed. He claimed that the religion, of which he was an initiate, was a modern survival of an old witch cult, which had existed in secret for hundreds of years, originating in the pre-Christian Paganism of Europe. Wicca is thus sometimes referred to as the Old Religion. The veracity of Gardner's claims cannot be independently proven, and it is thought that Wiccan theology began to be compiled no earlier than the 1920s. Various related Wiccan traditions have since evolved, or been adapted from, the form established by Gardner, which came to be called Gardnerian Wicca.

The confusion is understandable. You can ask for clarification. It is unfortunate that buffy and angel didn't explore witch religion in more depth. Joss only began to more when Willow started to lose control of her abilities and turned evil.

There are other religions for witches other than Wicca. Now I will have to check with some of my wiccan friends on unknowncountry.com before going in more detail.

Back to Hex I believe Cassie would have chosen Wicca but on the other hand Ella would been following a different set of beliefs. What that was I don't know. This is where Hex could have explored in more depth. Perhaps that is what season 3 could have done.

Cassie and Ella reminds me of Buffy and Faith.
 
It would have been interesting to watch Cassie and Ella fight alongside each other longer than did. Two witches with different styles and beliefs. Sound familiar ? Look at what was learned from the interplay between Buffy and my Faithie.

TK I think you are just calling magic, Wicca.

Willow used magic but she was not a wiccan, she was Jewish. And said she was after she started using magick. Wicca is the beliefs, and the show sometimes used some of the principals from it but that doesn't mean the characters Wiccan.

And Hex, I have no idea where you are drawing your connections from. Hex had nothing to do with Wicca, The characters didn't follow it as a religion, they didn't think about the rules of the religion. They just developed the ability to use magick and used it.

And if you were gonna talk about a religion in Hex for the Witches, we know Cassie's powers were connected to the Voodoo religion!

First I never called magic Wicca. Wicca is one of several beliefs of those who practice witchcraft. Some wiccans have other beliefs as well. Most are christians but there some who are jewish.

Well I would assume they are not proper wiccans! Wicca is a religion that has to be followed like any other to be a member. You can be Jewish and practise magick, but that doesn't make you a wiccan, cuz you are not following the religion as your religion.

I also never said you called magic Wicca, I meant I thought you were confusing the two. Just because a character has magical abilities does not make them instantly Wiccan.
 
Wasn't that group Willow joined in college a Wicca group? It's interesting Willow and Tara weren't satisfied with that group. The English coven felt pretty Wicca too.
 
Well I don't think that group was really Wiccan. I think it was meant to show that some people call themselves Wiccan because it's "cool" or "fashionable" but they don't really practice it. jmho

What happens on Hex is magic. And you have been saying how what goes on on that show is Wicca...thus I would say it's accurate to suggest some confusion between magickal witchcraft and Wicca.
 
so what is the difference between wicca.. and magical witchcraft? Just that magical witchcraft doesnt really exist or what? I thought thats what witches practised.. wicca? (im dumb i know)
 
Wicca is a religion just like all the other religions, but magic is, well, magic. Doesnt exist.
 
Magic and such

That wikipedia definition of Wicca someone posted is pretty much accurate. The word Wicca essentially means witch. The modern sects calling themselves Wiccans are typically a new age take on ancient pagan traditions and the more shamanistic and superstitious side of magic. There are many different orders that practice different types of magic, other than wiccans.

In Buffy, the types of magic that were pracitced most closely resembled Wicca, though of course it was quite a bit more theatrical. There were hints of other forms of magick as well, Demonology of course, and Ethan Rayne claiming to be a Chaos magician. Although the magic he practiced really didn't have anything to do with true Chaos Magic, but I won't go into that.

I know there are some of you out there that think all this magic talk is hogwash, and that is your own opinion, and I respect that, so let's just leave it at that. I'm not telling anyone to believe in any of this, just informing you of some of the beliefs and how it relates to what was portrayed on the show. I'm sure that anyone that logs on here has there own opinion on these things, and this isn't the place for debate on spiritual beliefs.

Anyway, as for the shows, despite the fact that the magic was quite different from true magic, that aspect did have to do with part of my own interest in the show, along with the whole paranormal side of things. Of course as I continued to watch I began to admire it more for it's talented writing, character development, continuity, acting, and the underlying themes in the stories.

King...you summed up what I have been saying very nicely.

For all you guys I talked about your posts to the real witches that I know. They found all your posts interesting. Also said the confusion over what witchcraft is to be expected. There is a lot of resources out there each with own interpretation.

Many witches who have wicca belief will call themselves wiccans but that doesn't make all witches wiccans. Wicca is not a religion in the same sense as being jewish or christian. A wicca witch will never do any harm to anyone or anything. However there may be some witches with a different belief like pagan who won't hesitate to curse someone or burn down someone's house.

Magic is not witchcraft. With real witchcraft there is nothing magical about it.

When Willow first started to experiment with Jenny's spells she was a very different person who liked the power of the spells. Too many who start to experiment with real witchcraft don't realize what fooling with. They wanted the ability to turn their boyfriend/girlfriend into a horse or dog or cause their fingers and toes to fall off. Others like the group Willow met as a freshman in college only liked the fellowship of the group.
 
Magic is not witchcraft. With real witchcraft there is nothing magical about it.

You ask a very complicated question and unfortunately I don't have adequate time right now to go into more detail. I am going to pose your question to others who will be better able to answer.
 
I have a question. Every point youve made on here has been told to you by someone else. Can you think for yourself at all? Even now you say youre going to go and ask someone else.

Why start a thread if you dont know what youre talking about?
