What Season Would You Rewrite?

Season 7. Joss had the right idea to take things back to the basics. Re-opening Sunnydale high & Writing Faith back into the series were probably the only great things about S7. I focus the plot around the main Scoobys trying to take down the first evil. Give a episode for Giles, Willow, & Xander each about thier relationship to Buffy over the past 7 years. The finale could have been a montage of Easter eggs showing up as Buffy and the gang fight the Uber Vamps in the highschool.

The first three seasons are pretty much perfect. I would not change anything about them.

Season 4: Would have made The Initiative arc more interesting by having Ethan Rayne somehow involved in it and kept Professor Walsh as a human antagonist, working together with Ethan and Adam. I also would have killed off Riley trying to protect someone from the Scoobie Gang from Adam. Spike could have maybe realised his crush on Buffy in late season 4.

Season 5: I would have given Glory someone more interesting to play off than her minions, maybe that doc guy. Also maybe some more creative dark MOTW stories. This season is a bit soapy and would benefit from some horror elements.

Season 6: Cut down the screen time of the Trio. With some minor adjustments, you really only needed them in Dead Things and Seeing Red. I also maybe would not have killed Tara, but continued exploring her growth and her relationship with Buffy. Willow becoming bad through arrogance, recklessness and some bad influence by Rack or Amy or The First Evil even, I would have bought more, and yeah she could have simply believed that Tara was dead rather than her actually being dead. I liked the storyline of the passenger that Buffy brought back from the dead in "After Life", maybe I would have kept that for a multi-episode arc. Giles would not have left to make Buffy more independent, but because the Council needed him to investigate something in the UK. Also an episode of Dawn going to therapy would have been great.Poor girl really should have gone to therapy after finding out she is not real, being kidnapped by a god and losing both her mom and her sister.

Season 7: The Spike/Buffy relationship is kinda icky after the attempted rape, maybe I would not have gotten them as close to each other that Spike is literally the only ally Buffy has. I would not have killed off The Watchers Council and instead have had watchers in other parts of the world collect and protect potentials, and maybe also included Riley in this. That way, we don't need to have quite as many potentials in Sunnydale and have more time with our favorite characters. I would not have written Willow as whiny and given her a more interesting arc, and maybe some witch/mentor-type to play off. No Andrew, Dawn should have gotten a boyfriend. Even with Tara being alive, I maybe would have still brought in Kennedy and created a love triangle.I kinda liked the idea of pairing up Wood and Giles more.

How would you write Dawn's therapy sessions without Dawn being diagnosed as psychotic? (Interesting ideas of a witch counselor are coming to mind, but that could provide its own dangers...)
How would you write Dawn's therapy sessions without Dawn being diagnosed as psychotic? (Interesting ideas of a witch counselor are coming to mind, but that could provide its own dangers...)

Could have been a friend of Giles (or Halfrek, but it being a longer arc where they form a bond.)

Seasons 5-7.

I'd take out Spike's love for Buffy in season 5. Make him more of a Crowley, a self serving cockroach that always lands on his feet. He was serving up to be an excellent version of this type of character in s2-4, but sadly IMO they just made him a mini Angel.

I'd cut out all the Riley whorehouse crap, and make him sympathetic to Buffy during her mothers ordeal. None of this Buffy likes a man who hurts her crap, or retconning it that she was attracted to Angelus rather than Angel, but I might have her worry about him not having powers and have him be reckless like he was before. This however would result in him being captured by Glory and tortured to death by her.

I'd have Spike still help the gang, but it would be more because he was scared of Glory. (Again like Crowley in Spn season 5.) Spike would find out about her plans before anyone else and become scared at the chaos it would unleash. He wouldn't try to kill Dawn because he couldn't and he would know that Buffy would kill him.

Season 6 I'd cut the Nerds entirely. **** them LOL. I'd have Buffy get brought back, and have it that the Demon that hitched a ride with Buffy from the Hell Dimension would be the big bad of season 6. Absolutely NO Spike/Buffy romance. I would however have Spike bond with Dawn. Certainly not romantic, but make it an odd couple friendship. Have him be more of a father figure to her, and actually make a point of having him bond with, and raise Dawn in Buffy's absence. Spike meanwhile would be forced to work with the Scoobies out of fear of the Demon population's retaliation for the Demons he killed. (They just seemed to drop this plot point for some reason?) Gradually Spike would come to care about the Scoobies more, but not in a big overt way.

The Demon meanwhile would be trying to regain its power. I'd also still have Willow abuse her magics, but in a less drug metaphor kind of way. At the end of the season the Demon would possess her and make her its host. Tara would NOT be killed. She'd help Buffy cast the Demon from Willow and back to hell. Tara would then help Willow through her recovery rather than Giles.

The finale season well I would focus more on the First raising an army of Turok Han Vampires. I'd have the Turok Han overrun Sunnydale mid way through and have Buffy and her friends be forced into an alliance with Demons and Vamps who would both be in danger from the Turok Han.

NO potential slayers, NO Kennedy. Spike would still make a sacrifice, but it would be more open ended as to whether or not he had finally changed and become a better person, or if it was just to get back at the First Evil who I'd have him despise. (I'd have a lot of bad blood between them from years ago that built up over the years.)

At the end of the seasons, people I'd have standing. Buffy, Tara, Willow, Xander, Giles, Dawn.

As for Angel, well.

Season 3 of Angel, first and foremost NO ****ING CANGEL!

Okay now I've got that out of my system LOL. I would also junk Connor. Sorry but I don't think he was worth it in the end. I'd have Holtz get brought back though. He was a good character, and I'd have him take over Gunn's old gang and recruit a relative of one of Angelus' victims in Sunnydale to attack Angel.

The reason Sajhan (who would be the main villain) would have brought them back for part of his master plan to foil Wolfram and Hart's plans for armageddon because he has his own. Eventually when Holtz and his team found this out they would rebel.

Holtz would obvs never forgive Angel, but he would come to see that he wasn't the same man, when he and Angel had to team up to finish Darla who would return to LA as head of a new Vampire gang and who would finish off most of Holtz team.

Holtz however still wanting his revenge, would remove Angel's soul with powerful magics so he could kill Angelus. Season 3 would end with Angelus on the loose.

S4 would have Angelus work with Wolfram and Hart for his own ends for a short while. Angelus would murder the last of Holtz team including the relative of his Sunnydale victim who would have been like a daughter to Holtz causing him to have a break down.

Eventually team Angel would restore his soul. Unfortunately by then Angel would have already helped Wolfram and Hart block out the sun as the first part of their plan for armageddon. The rest of the season would focus on this as LA became a Demon town. Holtz would try and redeem himself by helping to set up a safe area for people. Eventually Wolfram and Hart would use the chaos to summon one of the Senior partners into this dimension. The Senior Partner's ritual however would go wrong thanks to Angel sabotaging it and it would go insane and slaughter the Wolfram and Hart LA base.

Eventually Angel and his team would defeat the Senior Partner. Holtz would die whilst redeeming himself to save them at a crucial point. Cordelia would be the one who would finally destroy the monster, but doing so would put her in a coma. (I'm only writing her out because I want Spike in season 5 LOL.)

Season 5 I'd keep pretty much exactly the same. I'd have it however that when Spike is brought back he has a soul. (Season 5 only works with Spike with a soul.) Other than that, and some jealousy over Buffy taken out. Season 5 would unfold in exactly the same way. Wolfram and Hart would still want Angel to continue his role in the appocalypse, and I'd make it clear that the Demons unleashed at the end of season 5 were just there to kill Angel and friends so as not to end it on too much of a downer where the world is in peril. (It also makes Angel look a bit stupid that he brought the end of everything down after all the work Buffy did to save it LOL.)

I like a lot of these ideas, but big high five for no Cangel!
Working backwards...and potentially full of spoilers for the uninitiated.

Buffy, Season 7:
Introduce Wood as a good guy early. I don't think we profited by keeping his allegiances a mystery.

I think someone else on here mentioned tightening the lineup of potentials and expanding on their stories so we actually care about them. I agree.

Get Spike out of the basement of the school earlier. So many episodes were spent wondering about Spike. I feel the chip, trigger, and insanity plot could have overlapped in some places, been advanced sooner, and have allowed him to become an asset to Buffy earlier. Plus this could have allowed for some of the more interesting aspects of their relationship to be developed, instead of being crammed into a couple of episodes at the end.

Rework some of the threatening scenes to actually be threatening. Some of the conflict lacked so much strategy it was hard to believe there was a threat at all.

Buffy, Season 6:
(Sorry, folks. I loved Season 6, and it's one of my favorites. Wouldn't change a thing).

Buffy, Season 5:
(I also love season 5, but for the sake of saving Season 4, I'd gift the detoxing Riley to that season, and instead hammer on his insecurities alone.)

Buffy, Season 4:
I wish the mad scientist and the monster plot could have been continued to the end with Maggie Walsh. I realize this was the original intent, but the actress became unavailable partway through the season. It would have been better.

Plus, detoxing Riley should have been in this season, so we get a clean slate to focus solely on his relationship with Buffy in season 5.

I also absolutely hated the cutesie plots with demon roommates, magical booze, and vampiric queen B's. I realize these were the early staple of the show, but they aren't the plots that stick out to me, and their themes are too much on the nose for my taste.

I did like the garbage boyfriend, Parker in this season, Harmony's reintroduction, and the development with Riley. I'd replace the garbage themes with those characters.

Season 3:
Gotta love me some Faith, and that whacky Mayor. I really love this season as well. I probably wouldn't have involved everyone in the school for the final battle, though, however symbolic.

I also hated the LA plot in "Anne". I probably would have used her time away from Sunnydale differently. She could have found herself in other ways, maybe even met up with Dru and Spike again. As you'll see later, though, I dislike alternate dimensions as a rule, though. I also hate everyone's behavior on her return. That could have been reworked.

Season 2:
I hate the Acathla and the Judge storylines, and think Spike, Dru, and Angelus could have had some better threat looming over Buffy, like a personal one, maybe her friends and family being targeted. That could have been expanded a bit more.

They did this briefly with Joyce and Angelus, but I feel it should have gone on longer. This whole season could have been like really good horror viewing just from this threat alone. Not only would it have been more menacing, but it would have made more sense. Angelus likes comfort. Why the hell would he destroy the world? I do like Spike's alliance with Buffy, though, but he's got enough of a reason to double cross Angelus without the whole world being in peril. Really, Buffy's whole world is the only one that needs to be in peril.

Use Kendra and Dru more, not necessarily together, just more of both of them.

Get rid of Whistler. I know, like Prof. Walsh, there were plans that got foiled, but in the end, it didn't work out. Angel doesn't need a guide. He could have found Buffy on his own and figured everything out from the shadows.

Season 1:
Borrow some of the Darla backstory from later Angel and gift it to this season.

Also, don't bother with Jesse, as he was both too much and not enough.

Put more Darla in this season, and don't kill her off. Have her just cowardly run away after the Master dies.

Rework the stupid hyena storyline. I get the metaphor, but it was both gross and just about made Xander intolerable. Maybe take the girls out of the mix, and don't add cannibalism to the story.

Introduce Olivia in this season and start building her up so we actually care when she shows up later.

Take out any plotline where students are suddenly geniuses at making magical or superhuman scientific things happen. This goes for all seasons. I'll believe the evil surrounding the Hellmouth can make extraordinary things happen. I'll even buy witchcraft as an explanation, but I draw the line at teens randomly becoming evil geniuses. Later, Warren I get, but he should be the exception, not the rule.

As for Angel the show:
I liked the show best when he was a vampiric Batman. I hate time travel plots and higher powers incarnate. Those things are fine for Dr. Who, but I don't think they had a place in the Buffyverse. I also hate Wolfram & Hart as a plot device, purely because I hate the idea of an omnipotent evil potentially controlling everything but doing nothing about it, and I hated the pacts everyone had to make in that storyline.

Also, the alternate dimensions got whacky on this show, whereas I bought them on Buffy. I'd either totally kill the Connor story or keep him young and make it better. I also liked Darla evil, so maybe Connor comes from someplace else. I don't know.

It's not my favorite show, though I do like some characters and episodes. Lorne was great. I'd probably bring about Wesley and Fred sooner. Gunn was a good character with some good plot points, but the lawyer thing kind of ruined him. I also liked Cordelia on this show, but I dislike the level of power she got. They should have stopped with intolerable visions. Being super badass is Buffy's thing, and having massive magic mojo is Willow's. Being burdened with crushing visions, though, works well for a character who used to be a bully.
Are the threatening season 7 scenes you mention involving the First? If so i agree as I found the First evil a bit all talk at times. I understand they can’t touch anything but really why do people listen to it taunt them. I’m Xander fan and even I argue the show should have had the first evil kill him to really up the drama in the last run of episodes.

Without changing too much of what came before or after I'd rewrite S6. Have Buffy be dead for about 5 or 6 episodes. Willow starts going dark because everyone is counting on her and she has to use more and more magic to do the everyday stuff that Buffy used to do. Then Buffy mysteriously comes back to life. A few episodes on why and how and she doesn't know anything. There is distrust between her and Willow because Willow doesn't believe it's her, etc, so Willow goes darker, more controlling. More distrusting of people. The gang is split in two between those wanting to follow Buffy again and those staying loyal to Willow. It'd be revealed that it was Giles that brought Buffy back hoping she could 'save' Willow. Thus setting up the second half of the season to be Buffy vs Willow.

Even with Tara being alive, I maybe would have still brought in Kennedy and created a love triangle.

It would be very one sided on Kennedy's part. However I do like the idea of Tara putting Kennedy in her place when she won't leave Willow alone.

Tara definitely wouldn't put up with Kennedy's crap.
Even with Tara being alive, I maybe would have still brought in Kennedy and created a love triangle.I kinda liked the idea of pairing up Wood and Giles more.
It would be cool to see Kennedy put the little miss priss in her place and chide her for walking away from her friends when they needed her.

WOW I think that's the first time I've ever seen anyone prefer Kennedy to Tara.
The First didn't need contact, especially with servants. The cops were looking for Faith. To add tension to the cops already going insane, have the Bringers murder a couple of cops and make sure witnesses and other police see Buffy.

If that's not enough, then they get an anonymous tip from the many servants and allies to the First that Buffy is hiding a dangerous fugitive in addition to starting a cult targeting foreign children, many whose families experienced mysterious violent deaths (if they hadn't already then it could be arranged).

For an added bonus, have a "survivor" of the Watcher's Council act all paranoid (as I'm sure some were) to be seen long enough who speaks in a way to implicate Giles in the bombing with more tips pointing to Buffy's house.

And if the First can be recorded (it seems to me there was a scene implying that) then the possibilities become much more plentiful.

It's no surprise to me that the First got replaced by others, like the Senior Partners who are much more skilled at exploiting evil in humanity and making it work for them rather than acting as some petulant child bored to death but too lazy to do more than taunt.

Perhaps I should put this in the joke thread, but I'm sure it will irritate someone who will itch to reply...so here, even this would've been better than season 7

One or two good ideas won't cut it, to rewrite a season you would need 40 to 60 good ideas, 1, 2 or 3 story's per episode then conjoin the ideas. As far as I'm concerned they did good in all seasons. I wouldn't want to change the way the story panned out.

I'd rewrite season 4 with The Initiatives and Maggie as the big bads.

I recently finished watching BtVS S5, and I realized that I don't hate Dawn, I don't hate her introduction, but what I do hate is that it is so unthinkable that she might have to be sacrificed to save the world.

Tara's brain gets sucked, Buffy gets the crap beaten out of her several times, Spike gets beaten badly, Giles gets stabbed nearly to death, and they all have to flee town and fight deadly battles with Glory and knights, but no matter what happens, they all have to be prepared to die to save Dawn, even if it risks destroying the world. I'm not saying she should have been killed, but I think the season would have been better if it was a real possibility, if it was even really considered. I think that would have made viewers sympathize a lot more with her character, because she is innocent and doesn't deserve to die. But it becomes annoying when heaven and earth must move to save this person we never heard of before this season.

And as others said, have some explanation why the Key couldn't have been destroyed by the monks. It's just another example of how Dawn/the Key is assumed to be untouchable, without selling it to us as viewers.

I would rewrite Season Three and have Buffy sired by Zachary Kralik. The Scooby Gang would then battle to re-soul her at the same time as doing battle with the Mayor and Faith who I would have undergo a personality change throughout the season. I think that could have been an interesting season with multiple story strands going on at the same time.

If I could write s2 Buffy, it would not be allowed on Prime Time, at least not once it gets close to the Angelus arc on for the rest of the season. It would be more in line with American Horror Story. And a blood bath. Season 6 would seem relaxing compared to what I'd put in season 2.

BaskingINBangel I like a lot of these ideas, but big high five for no Cangel!

Thanks. Cangel for me is the worst romance in either series. I think with Spike we lost potential for a good self serving, cynical, funny character by pairing him with the Buffster, but with Cangel dear god it just made no ****ing sense!

I still don't get why everyone in Angel's gang is so desperate for Angel to get with Cordelia when all of the same reasons he dumped Buffy apply to Cordy? (Her growing old, no kids, no normal life, him going evil if he's happy with her etc?) Don't worry though I won't derail this thread to complain about that LOL, that's just one of the many reasons I'd junk it, much I'm sure to Charisma Carpenter's joy.

I'm really interested to hear this now LOL. Season 2 was already pretty horrific with the corpse in the bed! I personally wouldn't change that season though as it is the best for me along with Angel season 5 of either show.

I still don't get why everyone in Angel's gang is so desperate for Angel to get with Cordelia when all of the same reasons he dumped Buffy apply to Cordy? (Her growing old, no kids, no normal life, him going evil if he's happy with her etc?)

It's writer laziness. Basically rather than taking the time to SHOW the audience that two characters are meant to be together, the writer just have other characters TELL the audience they're meant to be together or use some other magical plot device to say that it's "destiny" that these two characters end up together.

Another reason Cangel makes no sense is that Cordelia was there for the whole Angelus drama, she knows the potential consequences of what can happen. Either she's willing to risk Angelus coming out to play again, or she's willing to accept that she will always be second best to Buffy because we all know Angel's heart will always belong to Buffy. Angelus becomes a marker within the relationship, Angel's ex gave him a moment of perfect happiness, and so either Cordy willingly runs the risk of ANgelus or she has to accept that she will never give Angel a moment of perfect happiness like his ex did. Neither seems like the real Cordelia.

That bit of Cordy seeing the vision of herself fawning over Angel is cringe personified. No wonder Charisma hated her time in the later seasons LOL.

I see your "worst romance in either series" and I raise you a....it's the worst romance in the entire Whedonverse for me. I dislike it so much that I've created my own headcanon to explain it to myself. I won't elaborate on it because I don't like disparaging other ships too much, but basically I think that entire romance was brought about by mystical influence. That's my headcanon and I'm sticking to it.

Basically rather than taking the time to SHOW the audience that two characters are meant to be together, the writer just have other characters TELL the audience they're meant to be together or use some other magical plot device to say that it's "destiny" that these two characters end up together.

Yep. If I can't see it myself with what's playing out on screen, and you have to tell me that the characters are in love, then to me, they aren't.

but basically I think that entire romance was brought about by mystical influence. That's my headcanon and I'm sticking to it.

I have the same opinion of Spuffy. Spike literally wakes up one day and realises he's in love with Buffy (after Dawn appears) plus it explains the retcon Sprusilla breakup. Lovers Walk is the true version of events whilst FFL is Spike's altered memory version of events.

I have headcanon (that I don't think is farfetched) that Cordy's attraction to Angel (and a bit of vice versa) is Jasmine's influence. Cordy's reflection talking to her in the mirror about her love for Angel? Jasmine, who knew she had to force the choice on Cordy before she found out he was missing. She'd been hacked.

More farfetched, but still sticking to it, is that Jasmine tweaked Xander and Willow cheating so that Cordy would break up with him and later move on to LA. Even Cordy has a semi-HP was able to affect slot machines, and if the First can send dreams then why can't the HP also exert their own influence in their twisted games with mortals? I don't think the HP are into fair play anymore than the demons (speaking of which, plenty of demons worked for the HP).

And btw, watching this arc in s3 with someone. He likes Angel better than Buffy, and he was disliking it, saying it felt like Buffy, especially high school seasons (though all of them). He even opined that Wes, Gunn, and Cordy were all actually virgins (as unlikely as that seemed, and it never occurred to him before this shoehorned arc that I'm sure was added for ratings with free attention to the show by trolling the fans with it).

That is to say he felt they were all acting more like kids discovering attraction to the opposite sex for the first time (as opposed to adults) and being awkward and messy about it (he seemed only a little less critical of the Angel/Groo/Cordy triangle, mainly because I think that one made him laugh).

As for myself...Cangel doesn't bother me (possibly because of my headcanon) anywhere as much as the W/G/F love triangle. Glad that we're at the part that it's getting all dark and serious again (though some of those eps I normally skip were better and funnier than I remembered them).

I'll have to go into more detail on my version of s2 Buffy at another time.

Wes and Cordelia aren't virgins- Wes slept with Lilah whilst Cordy was impregnated with demon spawn by that guy.

S3 of Angel does reduce all the characters to acting like hormone filled teenagers who apparently no longer know how to speak to each other

Cangel definitely suffers from ‘tell rather than show’ hence why Fred and Lorne who barely know them become cheerleaders to tell US they belong together except one of the producers (possibly even Joss himself) gave an interview describing Cangel as ‘the grown up marriage after your crazy immature relationship’ like what about Cangel was even remotely grown up? Or even any more grown up than Bangel? Despite Bangel involving a teenage Buffy and rather immature Angel - it shouldn’t have been hard to show it as more mature and yet it never does seem to be

They also have an entire season where they act like the curse doesn’t exist and no one ever mentions it. Which of course is because they need to ignore it to make Cangel even remotely possible. Except the curse is the biggest part of Angel’s character - it’s what his entire characterisation is centred on. Why don’t we just have a whole season of Buffy where we just forget she’s a slayer as well?
