I know you are probably totally kidding, and I am likely going to be branded a total geek from this point on out for this shpeel, but....

Tolkien didn't spend a lot of time constructing swear words for either of the Elvish dialects (Quenya and Sindarin,) there are, however, several insults you can speak under the languages. As for actual curse words, such as the 'F' word, etc, there aren't any. At least, not officially. I'm sure that somewhere along the line someone has fanwanked a few words in there, but nothing that came from Tolkien himself. Or, if it did, it hasn't been published.

I used to swear a lot more in the past but I've got a kid, so nowadays if I say something it's like "gosh darnit" or "F that" or something to the like, pretty lame stuff in other words... them kids just pick it up way too fast 🙂

I think there are degrees of swearing. I would react more if someone said a very "rough" swear much more than if someone just said something "regular". If that makes any sense at all, lol.

I don't swear much at all. It's not on purpose, like I stop myself from swearing, it's more of my way of speaking, and I never incorporate those words in my vocabulary I guess. 🙂

I think I don't swear too much, but it's not like I'm holding back either (except I try not to curse in front of children). However, as I'm a very clumsy person, I often swear at inappropriate times, like for example that one time when I walked into the doorframe at my work experience in a kindergarten and muttered "scheiße" under my breath. I really don't want to tell you how much money I had to put in the curse jar.

I do use the German equivalent of the f word in situations where you'd maybe use a "softer" curse or when annoyed, as it's not really a curse word here, just an inappropriate one, and it's always amusing to see reactions.

However, I think cursing has a time and place and I wouldn't do it at work - at least not intentionally, if I hurt myself all bets are off, though.

If I'm around the fam it's 50:50, I would never swear AT my parents but I'd swear in front of them (i.e. I would say "I hate this effing snow" but not "eff off" to them).

Yes, I'm the same. My family is that way too. We're pretty respectful when talking with each other, but IN FRONT of each other everything goes. My grandmother is the worst of the whole bunch. 🙂

I don't swear that often, mostly because I don't talk a lot, but when I'm angry about something I will use swearwords to express myself. I try not to, because when I hear other people do it I think it's really unpleasant, but it's hard to not swear sometimes.

God, i'm terrible when it comes to swearing. Mostly when i get angry or annoyed at something, (mostly when on xbox) but i usually try not to swear infront of family members, even if half the time it slips out. If my mum walks out my room i'll be like 'f*** off' or whatever if i'm angry.. i don't swear intentionally, and it gets worse when i'm hanging around with my friends.

Once in my life I used a lot of swear words. Depending on the company. It wasn't something I was really aware of. How bad it could be. I knew I more or less stopped using them while talking with certain people or in certain situations. But when a friend, that was no stranger to cursing, told me he didn't like to talk to me on the bus since every other word I used was to use swear words. So I decided to stop. Took me a good while, months before seeing any real improvement but I managed. Since I often talk straight out without thinking it wasn't like I could stop myself before swearing so I punished myself by digging my nails into my hand and twist as hard as I could. Trust me, if you do it right it hurts a lot. 😉 I got a bit worried the times I started to bleed though.

I wouldn't say that I never swear. It happens but it's very rare. Not like it happens once a week or anything.

Can I be offended by swearing? Oh yes. But it depends on who says it, why, where and what kind of situation. So it's not like I'm offended everytime I hear a swear word. I think it can depend on my mood as well. Sometimes I probably don't even think about it when I hear it but when I do sometimes it's easier to ignore and sometimes it gets me.

I can see situations when a swear word adds something to what's being said but honestly most of the times I just think it sounds bad. I'm glad that I managed to stop when I did. I'd be very ashamed if I still talked the same way with friends.

But there's so many ways to say things with or without swear words that I'd have a problem with so I wouldn't single out cursing to be the main problem.

I'm fully aware that I most likely can't be taking that the way you meant it. Since to me it sound like "words doesn't mean anything". Or is that what you're saying?

If swear words don't mean anything yes, you can ask why should people be bothered by it. But at the same time you can ask why there's any need to use them at all if they don't mean anything. They can mean something to someone else.

As for myself, I don't swear. It's trashy for kids to swear imo.

I began to swear an awful lot this year. It's gotten to a really bad stage where I don't realize I'm doing it and it's just part of regular conversation for me. Especially the 'f' word, that's my 'favourite'. And I don't even really like it. And it's becoming hard not to swear in my own home. Like, I'll come so close to saying 'f***' and then I have to stop myself because my mother's in the room.

To be honest, I don't want a swear. I was brought up a Christian and I still am and it makes me feel guilty. I know, many believe they are just words and I want to believe that too. I used to be able to stop when I tried but now I don't think I can.

Anyway, I suppose that's my opinion. 😀 If that is an opinion.

It's really weird, because at first I used to think swearing was really really horrible, but as you get older and you hear everyone else do it, you kind of just pick it up. I still do think swearing is bad, but that doesn't mean I don't swear in my mind. Sometimes it's a natural response to something. I don't swear out loud. Probably only ever said the "'F' word" out loud between 3 and 5 times. Once when I was really stressing, and the other times when I was with a bunch of other people who swore a lot. I feel uncomfortable saying 'f***' but I felt more uncomfortable saying 'eff' or whatever surrounded by people for whom swearing is the norm and who pretty much expect that everyone swears. Damn you, peer pressure! 😀

I'm shocked at how many young children swear. My little cousin, when he was 9 or 10, called his mother an 'f***ing bitch'. That's not right. Primary school children shouldn't be swearing.

It's mentioned a few times in the Bible:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

It's not just about swearing, but it's usually interpreted as to include it.

I think it's more so that Christians are taught swearing is really bad than it's actually worse to swear if you're Christian. But yeah, I don't know.

Every curse is a prayer. Mostly I swear when i can't put my feelings into words more lucidly, so I don't know what I am praying for. It feels weird not knowing what i invoke. Sometimes you can almost see the energy of it go dancing off into the world. Sometimes it bounces around and knocks things over.

I will swear in front of a child of any age. by 5 every child in my family had learned there were "grown up words" children don't say. I'll tell the kids not to say those words and that they're grown up words, but there's no need to hide them from the children... they know the words exist and they know what they are.

I was at a Taylor Swift concert last year and coming out of the arena I turned to my friend and said "Oh my god that was f***ing awesome!!!!" And a mother grabbed her 7 year old and said "Do you mind?! Cursing like that in front of my child!" And I said "Um, I'm sorry, but it's not my job to know what words you do or do not want your child to hear. It's not my job to censor the world according to what you want your child to know." And that's what I believe. I don't believe in censorship as a whole... I think it's awful. But I think censoring curse words for children is lying to them about what the world is like.

A lot of that might be because when I was little, my parents went through a divorce with a lot of money disagreements and a brutal custody battle. I heard a lot of swear words from both of them about both of them. Dad's always had a really bad temper and has been calling me a bitch since I was like 8. I've grown up with two parents who never tried to censor anything from me. And I feel I grew up just fine.

By age 5 I knew what all the grown up words were too. But I got my butt handed to me when I screamed the F word in the store when I dropped something on accident.

I think it should be left up to the parents. My friend has two children (6 and 3) and I was trying to censor myself, but I asked her can I just talk normally and she said sure lol
