Lou said we've reached our limit in the old thread and that if we want to keep discussing Riley we have to create a new one. So I did, I hope that's ok. To follow on from where the last thread was going...

Spike is not a "victim" of any kind. At this point in the series he's an unrepentant, evil, mass murdering demon who's lucky to even be alive after all the things he has done. The word "victim" can not possibly apply to Spike of all creatures at this point in the series.

It's not self defense, and it's not punishment. It's torture, pure and simple, and at the very least, it lowers you to the level of the one being tortured.

Torture? He roughed him up when Spike provoked him? That's not "torture." Not only did Spike make personal jabs at Riley and try and provoke an argument with him, he plainly states if the chip was out he'd kill the guy. To his face. You honestly expect Riley to show this "victim" any sort of respect? Please.

Riley Finn had taken a stand against that very thing when he released Oz from the custody of the Initiative. At that time, he had no idea whatsoever whether Oz had killed or not, he simply knew that torturing a helpless person, for any reason, was wrong.

You mean a helpless *good* person don't you? Which Oz was? Which Spike wasn't. Comparing Oz and Spike makes absolutely no sense, one is a innocent victim, a good person. A person who's never done anything in the slightest to Riley, has never threatened to kill Riley or his friends and has never hurt humanity at all. The other is an evil demon who has threatened to kill Riley, has threatened to kill his friends, has hurt humanity a great deal and is evil. The idea that Riley should treat soulless Spike and Oz with the same respect is rather laughable. You earn respect and gain respect through your actions.

Now, you can justify Riley's actions however you wish, but the simple fact in Buffy's world is this: If something is a menace, you destroy it (unless, of course, you adhere to Buffy's human exemption). You don't keep it around to torture and intimidate whenever your girlfriend frustrates you in some way.

So really Riley should have dusted Spike then right? After all, this “harmless victim” plotted to break all the Scoobies apart so Buffy would have to fight Adam by herself and be killed? This “harmless victim” stood ideally by whilst Adam held Riley captive and planned to operate on him against his consent? I’d say Spike was a “menace” and therefore, qualified to be destroyed wouldn’t you? He's lucky he wasn't, vampires have died in Sunnydale for a hell of a lot less.

Besides, I wouldn’t be so sure under Buffy’s jurisdiction "torture" is an issue. She tortured the vampire for information in ‘When She Was Bad.’ Your applying human standards to demonic creatures. In the real world Buffy wouldn't have the right to use capital punishment against evil people, but we aren't talking about people, we're talking about *vampires.*

Spike was under Buffy's protection, reluctantly at first, to be sure, but nonetheless under her protection.

We are remembering that Buffy would come into Spike's crypt and beat the living heck out of him whenever she wanted information right? We are remembering that Buffy casually suggests "going back and killing Spike for the fun of it" to Riley? "Protection" was never a word one could use to describe what Buffy was doing at the time Riley was around. If you remember in 'Intervention' she was disappointed Giles and Xander hadn't dusted Spike in his crypt, "and please let the story have a dusty ending." Riley did nothing to Spike Buffy didn’t do on a regular basis.

You hold Riley to a different higher standard. You dislike him because he “bullies” a monstrous demon but you don’t hate the monstrous demon for slaughtering half of Europe? It’s not even remotely in the same league and yet you’ll dislike Riley for something so minuscule whereas you like and “defend” Spike regardless of how inhumane and immoral he was. Not to mention that you seem to forget Spike wasn't nice to Riley? Bullying doesn't have to be about physical contact ya know? You can verbally bully someone as well. Spike taunted Riley about Buffy not loving him, about Riley being inadequate, about Riley being dull, about Riley being a loser ect. Why on earth do you not dislike Spike for bullying Riley? If you “dislike bullies” then surely Riley shouldn’t be the only character to bare the brunt of your dislike?

The worst thing Riley ever did was let some vampires suck on his blood. That’s it. That’s the worst thing anyone can ever attribute to his character and he’s hated for it.

Spike and Angel have raped, tortured and killed innocent men women and children. Anya has been responsible for the death of thousands, possibly millions, and up until ‘Selfless’ didn’t even care. And yet no one hates any of them, no one faults them for it but they hold Riley to this high moral standard where if he does one single thing out of line they come down on him like a tonne of bricks. Like Angel, Spike and Anya. I do. But don't give them get out of jail free cards and hate on someone like Riley for having legitimate reasons to be mean to them.

Riley was a good guy. He treat people who *deserved* respect with respect, he gave up his entire career and life for Buffy. He completely changed his black and white views around and helped save Oz. He dedicated his life to fighting evil and helping people.

I don't know enough about him in season eight to form an opinion on what's happening with him right now, as they haven't gone into it yet. But what I do know is that everything I've seen of him in the past shows him to be a pretty great guy that is unfairly hated and held to different standards by fans. Even it is revealed he's turned on Buffy in season eight and is working against her, that won't touch any of the good things he did in s4, s5 or s6. When we're discussing those seasons, Riley is a *good man.*

Right. On. Dude
Riley, eh? Hmm. To be honest, his character doesn't interest me much. He's alright looking naked, which is a plus. I don't like the way he treated Spike (big surprise there, lol) and the way he manipualted Buffy. He was always too beefy, to insecure, and too clingy for me. Yet, I did feel bad for him when he left. It was obvious he really loved Buffy, but him and her were never meant to be. She's just above his level, and deserves a champion in my opinion. Riley was just your average dude with a inferiority complex so he joined the Army. Classic story. I can see what Buff saw him him, he's her "type"; beefy, sweet, and committed to her. Yet, he was so judgemental and saw everything with a black and white lens. Eh. It's also interesting he was the only guy Buffy has dated that Xander ever liked.

I agree with everything you said, except for the naked part. lol
He is handsome and he loved Buffy... and he is good person, but I really don't like him so much. I don't know why, but something on him is very annoying.

Vampmogs, I agree with everything you said, except this:

I can attribute worse to his character, and no, that's not why I hate him. It's a bit gross but I hated him long before he did that.

I do agree completely though...peoples' "AWW POOR SPIKEY WHY IS EVERYONE SO MEAN TO HIM?!?!?" opinions are beyond annoying.

Joan the Vampire Slayer when did Riley manipulate Buffy?

It's been a while since I saw saw S4, so bear with me...

In regard to the manipulation thing, after he allowed those vamp chicks to drink from him, it was like he blamed her for his behavior. Like, it was her fault she didn't love him and that he wasn't good enough for her. That's the impression I got. I also don't like that ultimatum he gave her. He didn't give her any time to think about it! He was just like, "ok well I'm leaving tonight at midnight; do you want to be together or not?? Stop me." He was unfair to Buffy I believe.

And let's not forget he is one of Twilight's followers in S8.

Don't get me wrong. I think in general Riley was an OK guy. He was sweet, and he loved Buffy very much. He just couldn't handle being with someone stronger than him.

Speaking of, did you know Christian Kane originally tried out for Riley?

Okay, Season 8 aside because I myself am not following S8. I don't believe Riley giving Buffy an ultimatum constitutes as manipulation. "Do you want to be with me" is a simple question. Either you do or you don't. How much time do you really need to give? It's not exactly like Buffy had given him much reason in S5 to have any real confidence in their relationship. True there were underlying issues, but I think you're mistaking Riley's insecurities with himself for hostilities toward her.

Yeah I don't think it counts as manipulation either. Besides, Buffy was partially to blame for the way Riley felt. Xander and even Joyce were uncomfortable with the way Buffy treat Riley as "dependable." Riley didn't just imagine it, as Buffy states to Dawn in "˜Triangle' according to everybody "who wasn't Buffy" the signs were obvious.

The ultimatum, though not the best of circumstances, wasn't exactly planned either. Riley had already given up his career and his own mission for Buffy because he believed in that relationship. Now he had a second chance to make something of himself but they were leaving that night, he had no control over that. Riley didn't feel that Buffy was fully committed so why pass up on a chance for a career and his own mission for a girl who may always view him as just dependable? A girl who may never become fully invested in the relationship like he was? Riley needed an answer then, it wasn't his fault he had to leave that night.

Regarding season eight- we don't know enough about that to judge it yet. It's very possible Riley is playing Twilight just like it is very possible he's playing Buffy. Until we learn more I'm leaving it out of the equation.

I love him. I think he's Buffy's healthiest relationship, I've never seen her smile with any guy like she did when she was with Riley.

I fully agree.... I was so happy to see Buffy in a relationship with a normal guy for once. I am such a fan of the show that I love different things about all Buffy's major relationships on the show, but I was really really sorry to see Riley go. He genuinely loved Buffy, even if he was a little needy, and he didn't deserve the way she occasionally tossed him off to the side only to pick him back up again when she was ready for him. But while I was sorry to see Riley go, I admit that Buffy and Riley would never have worked with the direction they were taking Buffy's character. Now, if they had reintroduced Riley early in S7 before she and Spike got together again, it might have worked out, since wasn't so dark anymore, but I think Buffy was good for Spike so I'm not sorry that whole thing happened, either...
Anyway, I loved Riley. It was refreshing to have another man's man on the show to see natural, normal reactions from and not someone who was all powerful and magical. He was nice company for Xander, too. 🙂

When I was watching, I already knew about Spuffy so I constantly wanted Riley to get out of Spike's way and only later realized that I actually liked him a little. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a Spuffy though. (sw)

Mention the name Riley and i cringe,
he got me mad for some reason, i liked him up untill the episode 'Hush' from then on i just wanted all the seasons with him to go by!
Im so glad he left! 🙂

I had the same experience. Season 4 was originally my least favorite season but after viewing it a few times I came to appreciate Riley for what he was - Buffy's only real attempt at the "normal" relationship she thought she wanted up until that point.

She really had to experience the other side of that fence before she could realize that although the grass was quite green and lovely that she was maybe not that well suited to grazing on it.

I do however think it is lame that they brought him back all married and stuff... I prefer to think of him pining away after our girl. I comfort myself that even though he was married and pretty happy he did seem still sorta hung up on her.

Ack! No... I was glad that he moved on. I mean, I don't want anyone out there pining for Buffy forever. That makes that person pathetic, and it makes Buffy kinda pathetic for choosing him. The only person who is allowed to do something like that without losing cool points is someone whose coolness overshadows his lameness. Like the Fonze. Or James Dean. That's why Angel and Spike can follow buffy around like wee little puppy dogs and still be cool. They're sexy vampires, so they need a few annoying traits to tone down their coolness. Riley was just a regular guy, so he needed to do non-pathetic things in order to retain his coolness. Since he failed in that endeavor, the only thing he could do to reach any sort of resolution as a character (and to regain his lost cool) was to move on.

Coming back as a s8 villain is pretty cool, too.

See? It's Cool-o-nomics!

I agree. If he had done it completely irrationally and there was no previous tension in the relationship and then he turned round and gave her that ultimatum then it could have come across as manipulative, but, Riley had felt neglected and not needed for a long time, pretty much from the start of Season 5, so I think he'd just got to a point where he was like 'This has to stop, I need to know where I stand.'

Plus I don't think its fair on Riley to say that he just couldn't handle being with someone stronger than him. Considering everything he went through when he left the Initiative and the withdrawal etc, I think he had to adapt so much and Vamp Tramp is right, his insecurities were always only about himself and him not being enough for her. They weren't about him thinking Buffy considered herself to be above him.

eek , for some reason i really disliked Riley. He was a pure push over and he didnt really do much that was interesting. i didnt miss him one bit when he left.
im glad they got rid of him to be honest. i dont know why , he just annoyed me D:

That is the exact opposite of what I felt lol
I liked him because he seemed normal and grounded which was a nice escape from all the 'My boyfriend is a vampire' drama. Of course, then there was the problem of how Riley and Buffy's relationship would work when she had this enormous secret that would always be the elephant in the room. That was all solved by The Initiative though so things were good. Riley wasn't boring in my eyes; he was a typical macho-man whose girlfriend could kick more butt then he could. It was nice to watch him breakdown... even though that sounds cruel. OK, so maybe it wasn't 'nice', but it was interesting. 😀

nahhh a disagree, lmfao, even though it was the healthiest relationship buffy had, she always left him out, she pure used him in a way ;/
