World Cup 2018 thread: Let the Wars begin...

As expected that was an enjoyable opening match of the day. This group is looking like the most open in the World Cup. Colombia did very well to fight back with ten men, but in the second half the numbers game caught up with them. Japan made the right changes and the win will be a big boost for them. Still think Colombia should have enough to come through the group.

The group is definitely wide open, and Senegal are making it even more interesting rn
Great save there from the Portuguese keeper. Their making very heavy weather of this😀 Funny because they won the Euros mostly through a solid defence.
 
Looking forward to Croatia against Argentina tonight. Could be one of the standout matches of the group stage. Croatia are one of the dark horses and Argentina had a rocky first match. Think sometimes the pressure on Messi is just too much.
 
Well I don't think that was a penalty in the Denmark game. But the Aussies are putting up a good fight and deserved that draw. They've taken it to the last game which as the underdogs in their group is all they can ask for. France have started ropey against Peru who look sharp.
 
Jesus how do you have Messi and Aguero available and come up with a team that awful? Truly awful to watch, blame with the manager and those above him I think.

I agree. As good as Croatia were, Argentina were just dire. Never say never, but I can't see them getting out of the group now. It would be a good story to see Iceland advance with Croatia.

Never mind get out of the group they'll be lucky to get a point in the last game playing like that. I should be supporting the underdog but I'd really like to see some decent football and it's the last chance to see Messi at the world cup.

Another match where VAR doesn't seem to be having the right impact. I spotted at least 2 red cards, might have been more. Feels more frustrating than when the ref would only get one look and miss it.

Yeah its always a toss up for me. I do like to see the good sides make the knockouts. Partly because you get some spicy games later in the tournament. Then again I think the World Cup can be more interesting if you have upsets and its wide open. Besides Croatia play some wonderful football. I enjoy watching Iceland too. Messi once again messing out is probably the downside.

Yeah I think VAR is creating more problems than solving. On the evidence of this World Cup I'm not in favour of it.
 
Lucky, lucky Brazil. Those two late goals could be the turning point of their World Cup. Good effort from Coasta Rica too. The match itself was one of my least favourite of the World Cup partly because of how bad some of the diving was (mostly from Brazil). At least VAR served its purpose today IMO.
 
Yeah Argentina is done. I am really sad to see Messi’s likely last appearance be such a disappointment. Oh well... now I don’t know who to root for to go all the way. Hmmm....
 
Poor Iceland. Musa took over the game though. He sure is fun to watch when he's on. This group has a really interesting dynamic for the final matches now.
 
I watched the game last night, and was amazed and how bad Argentina were. Probably the worst in my lifetime, at least for entertaining football.

Jumped the gun a bit there!😛 Things are wide open again after Nigeria's fantastic win over Iceland. Very tough to call who will join Croatia in the next round. The telling factor could be if Croatia rest players or sit back against Iceland having already advanced. Its hard to predict how a team in their position will play.

I think they will go out now. But it is so close to call.
What a half! England for the cup and golden boot. Also congratulations to Panama who may be the biggest bellends here above Tunisia.

Pleasing half but let's not get too carried away it is only Panama🙂 I'm getting a little bored so might actually turn it off😉
 
I got called away for more free food and an open bar so missed the second half. Got to enjoy the winning and goals while it lasts. Been a bit short of both for a few years.
 
Panama cheated less than Tunisia, glad the referee was a much better one than the one at the Tunisia match and didn't tolerate Panama's cheating.

England did well, hopefully they beat Belgium.
