World Cup 2018 thread: Let the Wars begin...

Russia have done themselves and their National proud. What a fantastic ride they've had and they pushed Croatia very close tonight. If Croatia play up to their potential next Weds they should give England their toughest test so far. But ever since the groups stages they have struggled to that. England should be in with a very good chance of at least making the final.

I don't want France in the final, they're the only team to have been in a final recently, so would be good to see more outside teams in it instead

I'm kinda hoping for a Belgium vs Croatia final, just as I don't think either team has ever made it to the final before.

In Any case, as a french I consider Belgian like my cousin, so whoever will win this match, I will support Belgium or France in final

I hope England win the final, it's been 52 years, it's our turn to take the trophy home!

I can't decide whether France or Belgium would be the better team to face.

Can someone explain the whole "it's coming home" thing? Without sending me a video? Like why is the trophy going to England home? Just curious.

I am only guessing this is the reason, but I think it is just that for nearly a thousand years it has been a big deal in England. One of the earliest documented uses of the word "football" was proclaimed by Henry V. Edward III banned it because he needed people practising archery for his wars. The FA cup is the oldest soccer competition.

Now, I wait for someone to correct me with the real answer.

To be honest I don't know for sure. I think your probably right. I think its partly a reference to the World Cup because it is considered the top prize.

When England hosted Euro 1996 Baddiel and Skinner, two comedians and football fans, realised the song Three Lions with the help of actual musicians The Lightning Seeds. The chorus of that song which has remained popular for over 20 years is "it's coming home". That's why you're seeing the phrase a lot.

Why is that the chorus of the song you ask? That's because modern football originated in England in 1863 after Rugby & Football serperted into 2 distinct games and The Football Association was formed. The chant is based on bringing the biggest prize in football back to where the game was invented, back when we were the best at it... by default.

I'm at work on Saturday, so I'm kinda hoping that England are in the final just so I don't have another dead afternoon while everyone is in the pub

YES !! 😉 We did it. I think we played very well, we had opportunities to put more than one goal and I think that in defense we were excellent. Let’s see the finale now, either you guys or the Croatian.. let’s see

Two very good sides with some excellent players. France seemed a little more organised at the back and that was probably enough to edge it. Shameful time wasting at the end though.

Think France will make fantastic runners up.

Agreed. Even as a French, I think that what MBappe did at the end, the moment he took the ball and then played with it whereas the ball was for Belgian and he knew it but he was doing the guy who didn’t know, didn’t see. it was pathetic, useless.. but hey Neymar is his idol so... this explains that.

Yeah, he's quite the naughty kid 😛 But he'll settle down eventually.

Honestly I hope we'll play against Croatia. I don't want to risk losing against England, or we're up for another 100 Years' War.
