I'm too indecisive to pick favourites but my group has been playing a lot of board games recently and are always on the look out for new ones. Good stuff:

Risk 2210 A.D. - I've not played it for a while but this is the best version of Risk I've found. It takes the standard game, adds water and moon colonies and also commander cards. It also adds a turn counter so that it doesn't go on indefinitely. It still suffers from a bit of dice frustration but since I've never lost a game I think your skill shines through 🙂

Smash Up - A nice quick card/board game to pick up and play. You pick 2 sets of army cards to begin with and then smash them together. So the game can be something like Pirates & Ninjas v Dinosaurs & Robots v Zombies & Aliens etc. It's really fun and varied every time.

Dead of Winter - This takes an age to set up but is well worth it afterwards. You're battling zombies, have a tonne of missions to choose from, potentially have a betrayer in your midst. Loads of game mechanics and variables to keep an eye on. Really nice theme as well.

7 Wonders - I bought this for my mate at Christmas and it's turned out brilliantly. Build up your civilisation to beat the rest of the world. You score points for Military, Science and general advancement. You have to balance what you produce and what you buy. A little awkward to begin with but a good thinker after that.

Small World - A clever strategy game that doesn't rely on dice rolls to decide outcomes. You have to chose an army, decide where to attack, chose when to reduce that army and then go again.

I've just bought the American Buffy game after some recommendations on here so fingers crossed it's good!

I like it. Any dice/random number generator is a huge turn-off and no-no for me, unless the other parts are really good like MTG.

It all depends on the execution of it for me. It's the biggest weakness of the Risk board games because the players are going head to head and it can be a cause of immense frustration. Other times it adds a nice amount of variation and calculated gambles. In Dead of Winter you have to roll a dice if you move from one location to another to see if you'll be bitten or killed by zombies. Where it's a mostly co-operative game and the die rolling is reduced you don't get the same frustration level as in Risk.

Cash games or just for fun? I used to play a fair bit of online poker at uni and then instead of job searching.

Always stakes in my case- just more fun that way, with some sort of risk. Whether its twenty/fifty pence games when I was a student (just winning enough for an extra pint or two at the union) or bigger cash wins. A couple of times for chores- that was fun.
The best time was strip poker though. That was a great night. 😀

card: gin, euchre, blackjack, stud and draw poker and... pit! boom. that was the jam back in the day
board: trivial pursuit, taboo, monopoly and... bargain hunter! boom. that was the jam back in the day
mixed media: scene it dvds

Small stakes IRL with friends, but it's been a while. Online is just for fun. I have an addictive personality and I'd likely gamble my house away if I were playing for real money.

Is there a way we could play each other online?! (for fun)

I never understood the point in playing for fun. You dont win anything. People 'bet' outrageously. It is very frustrating.
