I don't think it's something you can opt to be, but I'm no expert.

A lot of psychopaths are shaped by particularly traumatic childhoods. In fiction Dexter is a good example and in real life Ed Gein and Ted Bundy had horrible childhoods. It would not be unreasonable for someone who experienced what Angel did as Angelus and be screwed up enough to keep killing despite his soul. But I think in Angel's case if he had chosen to continue being a murderer it would have been more like Faith with Darla being his version of the Mayor.
