With what little I've seen of Angel seasons 2-4, I interpreted Fred as a "stereotype foil" to Lindsey. They are both from Texas, but they have opposite personalities, opposite perspectives on Angel, and from what I understand, opposite character arcs and deaths. It might be because the American stereotypes I am familiar with are quite extreme [America is only New York, Texas, and California; All American women are voluptuous, bronzed, and tall, walking around in a Star-spangled bikini top and jean short shorts with a cowboy hat; All American men look like Elvis or are blonde with a widow's peak and a rather large nose; Americans threaten to sue each other at every opportunity, etc.], but I thought both of these characters together showed a more rounded view of Texan Americans, like how Buffy and Cordelia represent a more well-round view of Californian women.
