I think that's actually because he dresses like a Texan in Angel's mind. It's an insult. I don't think that confirms that Lindsey is from there, and it seems to me he isn't.

Oh hmm there you have it. Its interesting because the wiki says "Born into a dirt-poor dysfunctional family in the south-central United States, Lindsey worked hard to overcome his upbringing." I guess we are south central in Texas?
 
I coulda sworn I heard mention - in-show - that Lindsey was Texan, as early as S2, but I am due for a re-watch 😉

Totally willing to believe this, but I thought he was really supposed to be from Texas. What makes it seem to you that he isn't?

I'm in a S2 re-watch so far nothing on Lindsay being from Texas. It might just be assumed.

I guess the reason I thought he was from the midwest was because he doesn't SOUND like a Texan but then again, I just said that Fred was so stereotypically Texan and doesn't sound like me. Although I do say Ya'll... we all say "Ya'll" did Lindsay say "Ya'll"? The boots and hat is not just a Texan thing, it could be anywhere you see a rodeo all the way up to Wyoming so to me that's not quintessential Texan.

The assumption could be because of the actor's roots; isn't Christian Texan? Writers sometimes, subconsciously or consciously, give a character traits from the actor, it certainly wouldn't be the first time.

(no offense intended toward Texas, but for me that truck in Dead End screams Texas 😉)

On the Texas accent thing, the accent varies from place to place (and that and other reasons is why I consider West Texas a different state than East Texas, though I can break the state down into more than that, which only includes the relatively small portion I got acquainted with). Houstonians made fun of my accent and called me a hick, while in the small rural town I spent plenty of my formative years in would say people from the cosmopolitan cities like Houston and Dallas (and even Austin) "sound like Yankees" (yes, that word still gets used there with a tone of contempt, unlike Houston, and I still remember a few "Yankee jokes").

Though it was odd back hen I was riding in a car with a bunch of Californian Deadheads who made fun of my accent and yet were loving Janis Joplin that they were playing, and couldn't hear it in the singer they were enjoying. In this song she sounds and laughs so much like my grandmother (probably me as well if I'd smoked as much as they did) that I couldn't help but think of her even as those listening to her were praising her singing but mocking my accent (and yes, Janis Joplin was a Texan, not sure why that surprises so many people):


That aside, I'd assumed the character of Fred came from rural West Texas as she and her family have more of that vibe to me, and IIRC, the flashback scene seemed West Texan to me (environments also differ widely in Texas, ranging from humid marshes to arid deserts). As for the actor who played Lindsey...he has more of an Oklahoma vibe than Texan to me, but it's too nuanced or ineffable for me to explain why, and it's just an impression. Given that hatred that seems to exist between many Texans and Oklahomans (despite, or because of, being so alike) I kinda feel bad for him being confused with one or the other (and having a background with both states).
 
Haven't watched the Angel series yet, but I've caught glimpses of Wesley and Fred together, and I don't like them together! I may change my mind of course, but I think I'd have preferred Wesley to end up with Cordelia anyway, despite their awkward kiss on BtVS (a more evolved, darker Cordelia) and have Fred pair up with Angel (this is probably blasphemous but hey, that's what this thread is for 😉 )

Jealous you get to watch Angel, do try watch it in order throughout the seasons. Interesting, I like Cordelia and Gunn they have a cute bickering Beatrice and Benedict vibe, watch whedon's Much Ado About Nothing. I found Cordelia and Wesley had a easy repertoire that I liked, in comparison to Cordelia and Angel who looked awkward together and have more of a friendship vibe, save for the maternal vibe they were giving Cordelia near the end.

What attracts Angel to Fred is similar to what he adores about Buffy, as well admiring her bravery it is her good heart and innocence. Another aspect that came to me recently is that to Angel being with someone like Fred would unleash his own ability to be innocent in the world, something he would want more then anything in the world and at the same time can not have, so it is bitter sweet, kind of why I see it ending much the same way as it did with Buffy, unless he gets his happy ending.

Hey, thanks for the pre-viewing perspectives from a pro 😉 It sounds like its going to be really interesting. I hope I love it as much as Buffy, but I think this augurs well. 🙂

I really liked the episode "Billy" and no, it is not because I hate women and got off on seeing Fred menaced. Or because I believe men are naturally evil. Not only is my opinion unpopular it seems to be different in that I think it is mostly about perception. Billy says "I don't hurt women". This is true, he doesn't, not directly. He says "I don't hate women" then goes on to calmly make one of the most mysogonistic statements I have ever heard. Wesley says he doesn't know what kind of man his anymore. Though the fact that he is so horrified by what he did that he does not want to be around Fred for fear of hurting her means that he is a good man. Something Fred still recognizes even after what happened to her.
