Angel : Unpopular Opinions

-Angel and Cordelia never should have been taken in a romantic direction. They were better off as friends and comrades-in-arms. Think of all the damage the show would have been free of if that had remained the case. No poorly developed or twisted romantic triangles, no contrived will-they/won't-they drama.

-I think it was a bad idea to pair Fred and Gunn. I think a romantic relationship should have been the last thing on Fred's mind in Season 3 after the hell she went through in another dimension. The Wes-Fred-Gunn triangle temporarily ruined Wesley and Gunn's friendship.

-I know this isn't exactly an unpopular opinion but it's worth mentioning that I hate when Connor became a teenager. That storyline was too full of angst for me. Except in Season 5. Connor was more likeable then after getting his memories altered. He should have been kept a baby.

I think among other things it was so that Connor mirrored Dawn, he even gets years of faux memories and inserted into a family just like her

I like to think this is not unpopular. Certainly not on these boards.

Either way, so much with the agreement on Cangel and in how sad I was to see Gunn and Wes’ relationship ruined for a love triangle.
 
I can't stand Angel. His character is dead to me. That said, I'd say my biggest unpopular opinion regarding AtS is this: so many times I can't stand Fred. She's just so...annoying at times.
 
Angel Season 5 is definitely the most over-rated season; the change in setting is jarring and Harmony is a very poor fit for the show. Even though the season arc works well the standalones are some of the worst AtS ever produced. The first ten episodes have an appalling lack of consistent quality to them.

The last 10 episodes also have serious problems. I mean, Fred finally changed from an objectified cute doll to a real human and scientist, what should we do? Kill her and replace her with another objectified doll of course! This time she's fighty! Yay!
 
I hate Wesley with Fred.

I think Gunn and Fred were two working class kids, who were smart, funny, easy-going and who made each other happy. In spite of Fred's genius, she was at heart a down to earth, practical person. They were fun together, and they were strong together (we see them work together well when it was just the two of them that summer without Angel or Cordy.

I think Wesley was obsessive, depressive and his 'love' for Fred was utterly contrived. I sometimes wonder if there was an element of 'we can't have the black man be happy with the hot white girl' in that break up. Grrr. This is up there with the dead lesbian issue in Buffy for bad writing choices, IMO. At minimum, it was an insensitive writing choice.

Wesley is a TRAGIC kind of human with a boatload of issues. I don't think he complements Fred. I think he would drag her down. I think she's his obsession, not his one true pairing. There's never a real relationship happening between them. Attraction yes; but everyone makes a mistake sometimes, particularly when everything is going to hell.

I ship Gunn and Fred.

And no, I do NOT hate Wes. I think he grows into a fascinating (if disturbing) character. Now, someone like (mature) season 2 Cordelia could have taken him in hand. That would have been an interesting relationship. He and Lilah also worked remarkably well, if tragically.

Don't think Doyle really had the backbone to handle a Cordelia, particularly the woman she grew into.

I DO agree that Cordelia is CRITICAL to the success of the series. In fact, once Doyle was gone, I believe Cordelia and Angel carry the show. I love the other characters, and think they were lovely, but Cordelia and Angel were the male and female lead. They should never have screwed with her character. That ONE episode.... when they burned the world, and assassinated Cordelia's character... almost made me stop watching the series. It still makes me want to puke.
 
I don't know if this is unpopular, but I think most of the romantic relationships they tried to do just didn't work at all. The only ones I think worked were Wesley & Lilah and maybe Wesley & Fred
 
After my latest rewatch, I've come to the unpopular conclusion that "In the Dark" is a pretty dull episode. I was always giving it way more credit than it deserves just for the scene with Spike at the top of the building.
 
I agree. If they could have had evil Cordy for one episode... and then reveal it wasn't her... then give us back he real thing and have her fight alongside the gang... that might have worked... and NONE Of them should have slept with Connor, b/c that was just... an utter uglification of Cordy, of Charisma Carpenter, and it ruined the show. Season 5 and bringing Spike in was an effort to salvage the show, but they killed it the moment Cordy first slept with Connor.

If they had to work around Charisma's pregnancy, they should have just put her with Groo or something... and have him take the baby off to safety in another dimension or something since they already had a baby on the show. Or have her give magical birth to the lovely Jasmine and go into a coma without any 'daddy'. Magical beings can figure these things out! Wasn't fond of the whole idea, but actresses get pregnant and come back or shows go on hiatus - it could have been handled somehow without destroying the character (and the show.) You do NOT bring back characters from stuff like that. After you do something that ugly with a character, you pretty much have to kill them or exile them from the group.

Since you mentioned Groo, That idea would have been way less controversial and made much more sense if they needed Cordelia to sleep with someone to kick start events for a mystical pregnancy. Especially considering they went through the trouble of brining back someone so minor and Groo came to LA out of nowhere. That in itself could have been written in a way that shows suspicious intentions.

This is why I said "maybe" because they kind of toyed with the idea throughout the beginning of season 5 but by the time they confirmed the Illyria thing happened. Also Wesley had feelings for her before so hats a bit more one sided though.

I was never a fan of Fred hooking up with Gunn or Wesley. She was smarter than everybody else, and while I can understand the basic human need for companionship, those "relationships" felt forced. When Fred said to Gunn, "I love you more than pancakes," I thought I was going to vomit. And trauma-hardened Wesley suddenly realising he adored Fred was like, "Huh? What? Why?"

i have waaay too many lmao but a few:
  • along with cordy's disgraceful character assassination and death, spike ruined the show
  • wes is a misogynist. he infantilized fred and that relationship was gross and unhealthy
  • fred/gunn was the sweetest, healthiest relationship in the buffyverse
  • faith's arc was the only good part of season 4
