Bangel in the Buffy reunion

Awesome idea!

Patiently waiting for gifs of SMG answering that question... A lot of people were talking at the same time, it was a bit chaotic and I'm not sure I got everything lol

So cute! Just in the beginning David? Lol.

I also can't wait for the gifs where Sarah talks about David being naked all the time!

Who's that lucky lady sitting on David's lap? And he and Sarah are still holding hands?! Or is Sarah holdings hands with the fan? Hmm...

Yay for Bangel! These are great! I like the EW went with the Bangel angle. Sorry Spuffy fans. Also Angel had his own spinoff show, so it kinda makes sense that he's got more focus. I love seeing everyone together. I wish that Nick was there, cause I always like seeing him do the Buffy Q&A panels with Emma and CC. It would have been great to have the original core four (plus Angel and Cordy), the season 1 cast.

Is that him in the back with a hat and mustache? He's not in the promo photos, though. But then again they're not going to show us everything. So maybe he's in some pics in the actual magazine.

It misses the part where Sarah turns to David and says that she chose him and he thanks her...it's cute 🙂

Indeed. But since this was a mixed gifset with Joss, it couldn't have the whole thing. But I'm glad someone giffed Joss too, especially since fans often go on about how he's 100% spuffy and how he finds Bangel boring, too romeo and juliet etc. It's great to see him say something nice about Bangel and then «you can't argue with that». Not going to lie, that made me laugh 🙂

Tbh, I skipped some of the parts where Joss talked about Spuffy. He did say he was split evenly between Spuffy and Bangel because Spike was the long term guy who got a soul for Buffy 🙄 (good grief Joss), and Bangel was the first love - the biggest love - and Angel was Romeo.

I hate that line of thinking. People always say Angel was Buffy's first love which is why it can't last, but Angel is the biggest love because it was the first. That's just bullshit. It implies that Spuffy has better chances of lasting because it's not the first love. It's the "love" that started out as an abusive relationship more long term material than the first love?...What are the odds of a couple with origins like Spuffy lasting? Hmm...I'd say lower than a first love. My mom was my dad's first love and they're still together. Not a whole lot of couples have stories that involve trying to kill each other and attempt to rape each other before falling even more deeply in love 🙄 Also, your biggest love doesn't have to be your first love at all and Angel is not Romeo. Heartthrob is about him being the opposite of Romeo. Joss just sounds like those fans I make fun of for beings idiots and not watching the show right...

Don't let Joss fool you. He was just pandering again. We know he isn't split evenly. The guy just has no guts in live interviews.
Damn they look good together. And lots of hand holding going on there Sarah. Are the videos available somewhere?

I totally agree with you there. Forget B/A for a moment. In real life it does happen that people find their life partner in their first love. That doesn't always mean the person is 16 like Buffy. They can easily be in their 20's or even 30's. It's childish of people like Whedon to think that first love always comes when you still wear diapers and therefore it won't last. It doesn't matter how old someone is or if it's their first love. My grandparents were each other's first love as well and they stayed together until the whole 'death do us part' part of marriage. And they still honestly loved each other after all these years.

Always remember that Whedon doesn't get Angel. Because anyone who knows him will agree with you that Angel is no Romeo.

The romeo and juliet comparison is probably my btvs fandom pet peeve and it's annoying how joss is the one perpetuating it. It's really weird given how much he knows and loves shakespeare's work. It's not only a superficial comparison but one that doesn't even work when looking at their story and significance.

David I think he is saying Angel lost some broodiness on the Angel show through character development. Particularly in the post-epiphany era of Angel.

Sure, I know that :) It's still funny though

I've said this before, but I guess it bears repeating.

Angel is the first great love of Buffy's life. That in no way belittles the relationship, and there is most certainly no way to deny its importance in Buffy's life. But the most important thing about that first love is that, without it, Buffy could never have a second love, or a third, or a fiftieth love, and each and every one of those loves will be compared to that first love. That is its significance. Trying to make Bangel the only significant relationship that either Buffy or Angel have belittles and limits both characters.

The story of Buffy and Angel in the first three Seasons of the show is a perfect Harlequin Romance, but neither character should be expected to cling to those three years to the point of denying any chance at happiness that might come later.

Let's be honest. When Buffy and Angel consummate their love, the only result is tragic, either on a personal level, or to the point of threatening the entire human race. That's a tragedy, but, in the Buffyverse, it's also an apparent fact of Nature. Happy Bangel just ain't never gonna happen.

And before anyone says that this is some kind of pro-Spuffy rant, guess again. I don't think that Spuffy is any less doomed as a relationship than Bangel is. Joss simply can't, or won't, write a "happily ever after" story line.

No one here is saying that, I don't think. One can't deny that there were and will be other romantic relationships that might be of great significance, positive or negative. I think the question of Spuffy vs Bangel at this point is simply 'who would/should' Buffy live out the rest of her life with. And these are the only 2 choices because Whedon & Co. never bothered to do anything worthwhile with another character/romance. Spuffy had a major effect on Buffy as a character (utterly bad effect to me personally) but to deny that would be like denying that Dru was significant for Spike or Darla for Angel, for example.

The story of Buffy and Angel in the first three Seasons of the show is a perfect Harlequin Romance, but neither character should be expected to cling to those three years to the point of denying any chance at happiness that might come later.
Spike isn't much better though considering what trope he services. He comes straight out of trashy female novels, the bad boy you have sex with who then transforms into a good guy because of the love of a good woman. Neither trope Angel and Spike belong in is all that great to me.

Let's be honest. Whedon is full of BS. The only reason why B/A are not allowed a non-catastrophic relationship is because the only thing worthy Whedon sees in them as a couple is the tragedy. And the problem with the whole B/A relationship and why it's such a big issue with all of Buffy's later relationships is precisely because Whedon never allowed it to end naturally. B/A breaking up at the end of S3 wasn't because they didn't love each other anymore. And every time after S3 Whedon never allowed it to go beyond short term happiness that ended in tragedy. One has to wonder why he never had the talent/guts to let it play out naturally. Let them try a relationship for real without making it world ending after a week, without a soul clause etc. . It might have done wonders for the story and the characters. And probably the fandom too.

On a totally unrelated note. David and Sarah have a similar relationship to David and Emily Deschanel. It's something I noticed in old interviews from back then and was reminded of again during the EW cast interview. They can probably banter like there is no tomorrow just like David & Emily.
