Bangel vs. Spuffy Round 2

But loyalty isn't really a reason in itself for shipping Bangel, or at least it shouldn't be. Basically you're saying 'I've become attached to this ship and I'll stay loyal to it regardless of its portrayal - and that of 'competing' ships'. Ideally, each ship would be judged on its merits alone.

I never said loyalty was my reason for shipping Bangel. I believe I made a point of saying that in fact. Rather I was examining how my loyalty to Bangel might be part of the reason i could never fully warm to Spuffy as a couple despite the good points people had made in the previous thread when I was discussing this. I wondered if I wasn't giving Spuffy a proper chance because of that.

But regardless of loyalty Bangel would always win out. I love the relationship Buffy and Angel had for so many reasons. I love that she was the first woman he loved in 242 years. I love that he loved her before she was the slayer, because he could "see her heart"...

Does personal attachment play a part in it? Of course it does but that's just one element. I don't think Spuffy is remotely better than Bangel but that shouldn't mean I can't appreciate aspects of their relationship. But I think my loyalty to Bangel makes it difficult. That was the point i was trying to make. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

When the Bangel era was all we knew, there was no such thing as 'Spuffy'. And I'm more than sure that if there was Spuffy at the same time as Bangel, I would ship Spuffy. And I'll add an inmportant information about me to continue what I'm saying... I was a Bangel shipper back then. They were my ideal couple (in the sense of the Buffyverse). Through season 4, I was still a Bangel, Riley hater mostly because I shipped Buffy and Angel. Then came the first Spuffiness in this season. And it turn the whole thing upside down completely. I became a Spuffy all the way. I don't care for Bangel anymore. I've been watching Buffy since episode 1, shipped Bangel, but changed my mind, because I was drawn to the new ship that was created back then. I'm converted and will never again.

Exactly. I did start watching Buffy in order on my DVDs years ago, but I knew what it was like to be Bangel and have Spuffy come on later and be like "Are you serious?!" because I was used to Buffy being with Angel and not anyone else (I didn't like her Riley either but I knew they weren't going to last because it was obvious). However, I got used to them at the end of season 6 because I was also used to Angel not being there anymore.

Also, I thought I liked Bangel more when I rewatched some episodes in the earlier seasons of Buffy, but I have come to realize that I'm more of a Spuffy because I rewatch episodes in the later seasons alot, and Spike and Buffy did have something there from the moment they saw eachother. And I like Buffy and Angel as characters more when they're not with eachother.

So for me it's Spuffy. But in conclusion, we still need more Cander threads around here 😉!

My thoughts exactly on your 2nd paragraph :)
I´m neither a Bangel- or a Spuffy shipper, but i've always felt that Bangel was, well, epic and that Spuffy was odd.

And even though I still don't like Spuffy at all in season 6, reading some your posts in this thread has really been an eye-opener for me, I totally get the Spuffy-love now. 🙂

Maybe in time, you'll grow to like Spuffy in s6 ;)
I'm not sure where I fit in because I watched the show from the start and in order but I always found myself, well, moving on. I'm much more invested in the characters journey's rather who they are going to end up with.

I loved Bangel when it first came around, even to the point of being anti-Ruffy, but after a while I grew to like Riley and started pulling for them. At this point Ats was really taking off so I had no interest in Angel getting back together with Buffy because that would mean the end of Ats. Also I liked Angel more as character on his own show, due to how much he'd grown. I honestly at that point couldn't imagine Buffy and Angel together at that point. Even if we did, it would be so different because of who they had become.

When my friend told me that Spike and Buffy were going to get togther, I was so excited because it was something different and new. Spike was such a contrast to Angel and I knew their relationship wasn't going to take the same course.

In FFL I was curious about them but by Intervention was pulling for them. By this point Angel was well established on his own show and there were also signs of Cangel so I was excited about that as well. Again it was something new and different and really suited NewAngel.

I found myself throughout Spuffy looking for signs that Buffy felt something for Spike and it was really rewarding to find something that signified that they could be together.

When the AR happened, I was actually confused because it was heavily cut when it was broadcast that I hardly knew what the fuss was about, but in all seriousness I didn't know how to react. I didn't find myself hating Spike but I was more shocked that it happened. When Spike got a soul, I was surprisingly indifferent. More because I was more invested in Ats than I was in Btvs at the time. This said, I did enjoy the beauty of Season 7 Spuffy and how the "lines were less defined" with them. However this was somewhat tainted by the fact that I didn't really enjoy Season 7 that much.

Musing on the whole subject of shipping, I've always found it an interesting aspect of the fandom. Until I joined the forum, shipping was an alien concept for me. I never thought "Buffy should be with X over Y". She was with Angel, then Riley and then Spike. I pulled for all of them more because I wanted a happy ending rather than because I thought she was better with one of them.

These are my issues with the issues regarding the ships:

Did Buffy love Angel more than Spike?

My Bangel friend with whom I often share a glass of wine, would say yes. In her eyes Spike is the vampire she'd settle for if she can't have Angel, to which I simply laugh.

You may remember I wrote a thread or at least brought up the subject as to why many Bangel's don't see Buffy love for Spike while Spuffies happily admit that Buffy did and even may still love Angel. Now I thought that might simply be shipper's view bunI recently asked my brother this question and as much as he likes Spike, he himself didn't really see the Spuffy love. Again, my mother was the same. Now she detests both Spuffy and Bangel (she actually is prejudiced against vampires, she doesn't mind admitting that, not to mention she's a hardcore Ruffy shipper), but she says as much as she hated the idea of Buffy and Angel being together especially after the curse revelation, she did see that they loved each other. She didn't see that with Spike and Buffy, at least on Buffy's side.

I however do see that they loved each other. I was clear when she told him she needs him to be around or when she went to him instead of Xander after the fight in First Date, leading Wood to see there is a connection between them. Giles even believed that she had feelings for Spike.

For the hardcore Bangels and my mother, the problem was the lack of "holding hands". Why not be with him? Why wait until he was about to die, to tell him you love him?

My answer to that would be times are different now. Buffy isn't so willing to fall into a relationship where she can't fathom the future. Also she was under a lot of strain in Season 7, it doesn't seem likely that she would have had a commited relationship with anyone. None of the above prove that Buffy didn't love Spike, just because she didn't go all "Bangelly" over him. The circumstances and the people are different.

Spike Earned a Soul!

Which I always thought was extraordinary for a soulless vampire to do, but as harsh as it seems it doesn't necessarily mean that their relationship will go well. Buffy herself seemed unsure about a future with Spike. This wasn't exclusive to him, but love isn't necessarily a case of "I'll do this, this, this, this, this and this and we'll live happily ever after". I have no doubt about the love Spike has for Buffy but a healthy relationship can only happen if they both want it and the circumstances are right. Unless I was missing something, if Spike isn't cursed, what's keeping them apart? I believe Buffy's not ready to settle down yet, so who knows if the deeds of Spike, either soulless or soulled are enough to guarantee eternal love for the blond pair?

AR

I think I may have cracked the issue with this, but I'm still a little confused. For me the nature of this is more emotional than logical. Both vampires have done FAR worse in their day but having someone say "I love you" then doing something like that makes it all the more jarring.

However if we look at it clinically, IMO, there are no metaphysical differences between Spike and Angel(us), but there are psychological differences. Either way, though I wouldn't blame either vampire for the deeds before they got souls.

My theory is that Bangel seems more pure in a way. When Angel lost his soul, Bangel effectively finished. They were established as emenies because Buffy was on the side of good and Angelus was on the side of evil. While Angelus was obsessed with Buffy and she found it difficult to kill the demon with her lover's face, they were not in a relationship nor did they love each other.

This is what makes the issue seem heated because as I've always said, the lines are more defined with Bangel and Angelus never said he loved Buffy or anyone when he commited his evil.

Perhaps, certain fans see Spike's evil as more of a betrayal because it appears he can love. For certain purists it's not a beautiful exception but a moral mess. His ability to love will put him under greater scrutiny because if he's "something different" then what does it mean if he does something that humans consider wrong? In this case it's even harder to argue amorality in the sense of not being conscious of right and wrong but Spike as an intelligent being would know the difference.

This isn't only about chastising Spike but also Buffy. Bangels sometimes contend that arguing that Buffy instigated the power play of abusive passion is just as bad because all it demonstrates, is that the relationship in Season 6 wasn't healthy. We also bring up the "lines" because it isn't clear whether and when the two of them are together. They would argue that Spike's AR happened on Spuffy time, but if not then it's arguable that Season 7 is not really Spuffy in terms of a romantic liason, but more of hinting towards it of sorts, at best. Angelus' abuse was clearly off Bangel time because Bangel had the good sense stop before it happened.

Whether we argue double standards or difference of circumstance, the arguments are still emotionally based. The fact that Spike's seems similar with or without a soul doesn't mean he is and he shouldn't be blamed for this apparent consistency of self. If the soul is such a big deal, then it should make a difference. As I said in another thread, forgiveness is an act of grace and Buffy has to right to forgive both vampires. In fact for me, it's not even a case of forgiveness as she seems to see them more like victims of circumstance than monsters by choice. She accepts them because of the soul.

Spike Is The More Recent Lover

I honestly don't think it's holding much water. First love and most recent love only means something if she is with one of them, but she isn't. I'm seeing very little evidence that she wans to be with Spike or Angel. I'm doubting whether she has actually baked. Sure she loves them, maybe equally, but this has to be coupled with a desire to be with the person in question. This is one of the reason I reserve my judgement. It also depends on how we regard Spuffy and Bangel.

Okay, so I feel I should address the issue of 'when you got into Buffy and how that affects your shipping' thing. Mostly because yesterday was my two month anniversary for being a Buffy fan. Yes, I have only been a fan of the show for two months exactly. Well, it was my ysterday, the fiftenth of november.

Anyway, I got into it late and the first episode I saw was Once More, With Feeling. So the first thing I saw was Buffy and Spike. I was intrigued by them. It was what got me out of the Twilight phase I was sadly in to be completely honest. Here was a hurt, raw and emotional bond that two people had. Spike the supposed badass vampire and Buffy the confused vampire slayer. It fascinated me and ultimately got me into the show. And so I do find that the first thing yu see and connect with, couple wise, is often the thing that you stick with. So people who grew up with Bangel for many years probably will never find it in their hearts to let them go.

But it can go both ways. I'm not totally anti-Bangel. I can think of several arguments against them when people say they're better than Spuffy but I DO LIKE THEM. I'm watching Season Two right now and I suppose it just depends on your opinion. If you like the badass, sexual relationship (in other words if you like to be turned on) or if you like the sweet, perfect, romantic and complicated relationship that Bangel have. It's just preference. Many people who have gotten into the show recently are Bangels or they started Bangel and then decided they liked Spuffy better. It's just a matter of who you are really.

Or maybe it's just whether you like Spike or Angel better. Do you like the badass or the brooding? Sometimes I think it's judging that and not the relationship itself. Because, admitted, Buffy treats Spike very badly for quite a long time. But because their love is so unconditional they stick it out and become absolutely stunning. But Bangel does have its complications too. We just all try and overlook those things sometimes.

Neither of those apply to me...I like both types of relationship, and I like both characters. Maybe that's true for some people...But not for everyone, and certainly not for me.
I completly agree. Both (every) relathionship has bad and good sides, and it all depends on what type of relathionship you fall for and what kind of person you are.

I firmly believe a good number of Bangels might be Spuffies if they had seen season 4-7 before 1-3.

I did and I shipped Spuffy with a passion (well, kinda) because I didn't have a clue who Angel was. I remember being actually pissed off about his appearance in "End of Days" and "Chosen". When I started watching the show in chronological order, I quickly converted to the Bangel side.

Why? Very simple, because I always tend to ship the canonical couple and I think it has been made abundantly clear both in the shows and in the comics that the Bangel love is never over. I daresay even Spike himself knows it (hence the "No you don't" after Buffy tells him she loves him in "Chosen").

Another reason (for me, anyway) is probably that I just don't like the later seasons as much as the earlier ones. I can't stand Riley, so there's very few Season 4/5 eps that I like and after Buffy died and was brought back, she just wasn't really Buffy anymore. And, well, that was where and why all the Spuffy stuff happened. She actually said to him "I'm using you, and it's killing me." Doesn't sound like the stuff that dreams are made of, but that may just be me. I'm not gonna comment on the AR because as you all already said, that was before he went and got himself a soul, but then again, Spike didn't really change all that much after he got it.

That said, I still believe that Spike truly loved her and became a better person for her, and Buffy deeply cared for him. But it takes two to tango, and she just didn't/doesn't love him back the same way, so I think he should move on. To me, that's pretty much the essence of it: Spike's love for Buffy is selfish; he wants her for himself, he tries to convince her that she belongs "in the shadows" with him and he is prepared to change everything about himself for her (and he actually has a history of doing that for various women). Angel, on the other hand, loves her to the point of total self-abandonment; he never wanted anything but the best for her, even if it means that he can't be with her; and that's what ultimately makes his love for her pure, without ulterior motive and therefore better. (There, I said it. I didn't mean to, but that's what I keep coming back to.)

Unless Buffy flat out says, "I love Angel more than Spike," (and her line in "Selfless" does not qualify), no one can convince me that Buffy loved Angel more

I don't really get that. Why does "I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this world again" not qualify as exactly that?

Some really good points
I don't really get that. Why does "I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this world again" not qualify as exactly that?

Because she was saying it to make a point. And though she does love him a LOT, she's also made it clear that she loves Dawn and Joyce more than anything. Keep in mind that she's also the Slayer, who is full of love- enough love to save a world that doesn't always deserve it. That's incredible. Our Buffy loves a lot of things, basically. And they're all incredibly important to her. So much so that I don't think you can truly compare them.

I'm honestly not trying to ignore anything just for my ship's sake, (Spuffy speaking 😀) but one statement isn't an absolute truth.

Ok, Bangels please explain something to me. I've heard COUNTLESS times "Spike's love for Buffy was selfish" and that's a reason given for not shipping Spuffy... but isn't ALL love selfish to an extent? And how was Spike's love particularly selfish? He went to the ends of the earth and basically hell and back to get his soul. That's not selfish. He did that for her. And if you want to say "yeah, he did that for her so he could get something out of it" well don't all people do that? Isn't everything we do for love for selfish reasons? I spent over $1,000 a few years ago on my cat because I loved her.. but I also did it to keep her with me. I know it's not the same thing but it's a perfect example of doing something extreme for love and for yourself. We are selfish creatures, humans. Everything we do is selfish... there is no act that is completely selfless. I feel like this reasoning is so flawed and I just don't understand. So Bangels, please... I want to understand. How is Spike so selfish in his love for Buffy?

Good point

But it can go both ways

That's very true. It can of course go both ways. I had a whole bit written addressing that but it seemed too long so I cut it.

I watched Buffy since day one, and I'm a Spuffy. I'm sure it's possible that when you watch it does have some impact, but I think it more has to do with the personality of the person. Eg. I'm a realist not a dreamer, I'm all about punk rock passion, not prissy love stories.

Of course its more to do with the personality/type of love etc. I acknowledge that completely. I did say it wasn't a main factor at all.I just thought when you watched it could be a factor if you consider that alot of Spuffies (not yourself it seems) seem to have watched via Boxset. I would consider myself a realist too but I don't think realism should play a huge part in escapist fantasy.

I think we all abandoned camp realism a while ago when we started discussing the hypothetical merits of a fictional vampire slayers relationship with two different vampires.

As I said it's not the only reason or even an important one just one of many.
Who you are and whats going on in your life at the time naturally plays a part so thats why I though when seemed relevant.

As regards to how, boxset versus on air etc? I just wondered if perhaps the whole epic saga of Bangel didn't translate well to episode marathon. I was only wondering this because I noticed the pattern of boxset-Spuffies.

But of course most of that is inconsequential when you consider
that it is more over which suits your defintion of love, which characters you prefer, their chemistry and which couple you connect with...

All of that has been established pretty well in the forums. My concept of when
you watched it and how I meant as more of a footnote to it all. So apologies to all the Spuffies who I may have offended if it seemed I was suggesting had you watched on air you'd feel any different and apologies to any Bangels if if seemed I suggested you mainly supported out of loyalty.

It was meant as more of a side note.... I don't think there will ever be a winner. The two ships are completely different and so is everyone in the world so naturally you will gravitate to one over the other. Perhaps given a different point in my life I might ship Spuffy. But then again perhaps not..

I'm a Spuffy, but I dunno, am I an out-of-the-ordinary Spuffy, lol? 😛 Not going to deny that the sexual chemistry was a plus. But I flat-out LOVED Season 7 Spuffy for almost exactly the reasons you listed for Bangel. I think it's subtle, beautiful, and full of incredible grace. There is a difference of preference when it comes to shipping, I guess. But I wouldn't say it's necessarily just those two preferences/opinions out there.

Or maybe it's just whether you like Spike or Angel better. Do you like the badass or the brooding? Sometimes I think it's judging that and not the relationship itself.

Sometimes with shipping there's a lot of overlooking that goes on. So I wouldn't say that it's just up to whether or not you like Spike or Angel as characters. Sure, there are a lot of Spuffy shippers out there who adore Spike and don't care for Buffy. But as many anti-Buffy Spuffies as I've seen, in my experience, I've seen very few Bangel shippers who actually care about Angel's own narrative as a champion. Spuffy AND Cangel karma :D
And if we're going off what Zoe said in her post about selfish-ness, Angel's love for Buffy and Buffy's love for Angel were both selfish. They quite selfish in fact, mostly because like Zoe said, all love is selfish. There was only a small measure of selfishness in Spike's love for Buffy. He really, really loved her. Because Spike has the power to love with more passion than even Angel could possibly know. When he loves, he LOVES and he never really stops loving. He did more for Buffy than anybody ever asked him to and he did it because he loved her. He grew as a person because of loving her and I think that conquers all, doesn't it?

Spike turned his back of everything that had defined him for over a hundred years because of how much he loved Buffy. Sure, maybe if he hadn't gotten the chip it would be different but we can't change that and it was just something that was meant to be. It was fate that he was to be tamed and have to realize himself again. He had lost all sense of who he was because of his vampire-ness and the evil stuff. But once he realized his love for Buffy, and it was a misinterpretation either like some people say, he became the man he really was inside. He got his soul because he knew she deserved better than what he had been offering her and so if she ever were to take him back he wouldn't be the monster he had been before. Now that's all very admirable I think.

Angel and Buffy were perfect for each other from the start. Well, as perfect as a Vampire and a Human can be. And that was the only issue/complication that they had to deal with in the begining. The fact that he was and, though they didn't know it was to become again, a killer. He was a Vampire and he was the one thing Buffy had always been sure of. She knew that she had to slay Vampires but now she was having 'fluffy bunny feelings for one'. Complications are what makes relationship work. And sure, they had them but in the begining they seemed like your classic dreamy romantic couple with the typical problem of him being a vampire.

Later he turned into Angelus and that's when I really started paying attention to him. He was obsessed with Buffy, in a different yet similar way that Spike was obsessed with Buffy. That's when their relationship got interesting. Actually in all fact, their relationship was at it's best in Season Two. Season Three had me thinking that they really had to let Buffy move on to someone else. Angel left Buffy, she had to move on and so she did. To Riley and then to Spike. We can't expect her to pine for Angel forever when better things are out there waiting for her.

I think Spike actually loved Buffy for a very, very long time before he realized it. His obsession turned into love behind his back and later, as we know, Drusilla could sense it. It was once he got the chip in his head that he realized and then devoted himself to becoming better for her. He helped, he sacrificed and it took him awhile to learn and actually do that but he did and in the end became an honourable man, deserving of Buffy. It's the perfect, complicated love story. He didn't start a good vampire, he never really was a good vampire which is why the story didn't leave me sighing like many other vampire/human relationships do.

yeah, that was a whole lot of rambling that probably doesn't make any sense. I don't know if there was a point. Tell me if you get it.

I think it translates just fine. I watched online in a marathon over the summer this past summer and I was a die hard Bangel until Spuffy was introduced. I say the start of my Spuffy shipping was Something Blue, and it was. I saw them together and was like "Oh my god, I want them to get together" but I still wanted Bangel to win. And if I had to choose between Bangel and Ruffy, it was Bangel no question! But then as time went on and Spuffy developed, I fell in love. It wasn't a cute funny "Oh that's epicly fun!" little hookup or "side-ship" as I like to call them... it was real. It was
wild and passionate and dangerous." It "burned and consumed." Bangel started out pretty much in love and together and I enjoyed watching that. I'm a hopeless romantic so Bangel really spoke to me. They loved each other so much and I saw that and I loved it. But Spuffy had something else. 1. it had Spike. Spike is INFINITELY better than Angel. 2. It had a journey. A path. Bangel just was... but Spuffy had a journey that led them to their love.

Yeah, I get that one too. Again I'm just observing things I've seen. Sometimes it comes down to which one you like better as a person rather than the full arc of their relationship with Buffy. I do like both Spike and Angel. I haven't seen Angel's TV show yet so I can't say I know all of his character arc but I understand you. In the end I pick the shipping that I believe is best for the person because of how it worked. I pick the one I believed they really did love more than anything in the world. I have read a lot about Cangel and have decided I understand it and believe, on the Angel front, that it comes out stronger than Bangel does. Just like Spuffy comes out stronger too. Many people say that Bangel is best because they will always love each other and that's true but when it comes to true love, two other people just step out in front. You can't have Cangel and still say that Bangel is better because he loves Cordelia just as much IMO.

So no, I wouldn't say it necessarily comes down to whether or not like you Spike or Angel. Maybe it's just my personal thing when it comes to liking characters. But when I like a character, I'm basically saying I'm a fan of their whole character arc, not just their personality. I love and appreciate both Spike and Angel's character arcs. The ships I choose for them (Spuffy and Cangel) just feel natural when I take in their entire arcs.

FetalPig agrees: this post isn't as long as it seems!

I know. I ran into a little trouble and my computer played up on me causing me to repeat some things. It's extremely irritating to look at for me now.I went back and edited it to get it right but it kept the old bit. Oh well.

Girl, you have to watch AtS! It's awesome, and not just for the Cangel parts. :D
Subsequently reading the 'what attracted you to Buffy' thread I gained some clarity and realised when you started watching BTVS seems to play a factor in determining the side you fall on in the whole Spuffy-Bangel debate. Not the only factor, or indeed even necessarily an important factor but certainly a factor.

I think alot of the Bangel loyalty comes from fans who grew up with Buffy and Angel together so then when Spike and Buffy hooked up after so many years it was like huh?

For those of you Spuffy fans who didn't watch BTVS when it aired but instead on Boxset. Once again I acknowledge that's not all of you but to those who it is. Can you understand how watching Buffy and Angel together for nearly four years makes a huge difference (in terms of attachment)? To watching the expanse of their relationship in a few short days?

Now I'm not saying had you watched it from when it aired you would feel any different, you most likely wouldn't. But what I am trying to demonstrate is where alot of the Bangel support comes from and why so many of your arguments will fall on deaf ears from a Bangel point of view. Loyalty and nostalgia are not only the prevailing undercurrent of this debate they are for many the end of it.

Interesting observation. For me though, although I didn't watch Buffy during its original run, I started at the very beginning when I began watching the series (took me a couple months to finish rather than days, lol). I knew going into it that Buffy got together with both Angel and Spike, but I was not sold on either ship. I seriously approached the series with an unbiased eye, not favoring any ship until I saw it. So, as I watched, I grew to love Bangel. I honestly did. Even in s2, when Spike came into the picture, I still liked Buffy with Angel. I thought Buffy and Spike were awesome together (as enemies), but I didn't see anything romantic between them at that point. Yet, as I progressed in the series, s3 made me not like Bangel, so I jumped ship. However, I didn't immediate ship Spuffy right then and there. I grew to love Spuffy as their relationship developed. My love for Spuffy overpowered anything I ever felt for Bangel 🙂

---------- Post added at 11:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:11 PM ----------

Why? Very simple, because I always tend to ship the canonical couple and I think it has been made abundantly clear both in the shows and in the comics that the Bangel love is never over. I daresay even Spike himself knows it (hence the "No you don't" after Buffy tells him she loves him in "Chosen").

I've watched that scene sooooooooo many times, and I honestly think Spike believed Buffy when she said it. He may have had some doubts because he saw Buffy kiss Angel a few days earlier, but he still felt her love for him at that moment in "Chosen." Plus, in AtS s5
when Spike came back to life, one of the first things he said to Angel about Buffy was, "You have no idea what we had."

And, well, that was where and why all the Spuffy stuff happened. She actually said to him "I'm using you, and it's killing me." Doesn't sound like the stuff that dreams are made of, but that may just be me.

Yes, Buffy used Spike and Spike did some horrible things too. However, they discussed this in s7. In "Never Leave Me," Spike finally realized what Buffy meant when she said she used him. She hated herself and took it out on Spike. So, in addition to all the evil things he did pre-soul, he hated himself for hurting Buffy (or allowing himself to do it). He felt Buffy only wanted to be with him because she needed the pain and the hate. Although he understand that because she was the slayer (she needed it for her job), he hated himself for it. Yet, Buffy said he was wrong. She didn't hate like that anymore, not even Spike. As a matter of fact, she believed he could be a better man. He shouldn't hate himself anymore, no matter what happened between them in the past, because Buffy saw him change and saw his penance. Although he didn't see it yet, she did and believed in him.

To me, that's pretty much the essence of it: Spike's love for Buffy is selfish; he wants her for himself, he tries to convince her that she belongs "in the shadows" with him and he is prepared to change everything about himself for her (and he actually has a history of doing that for various women).

Taking a beating from Glory in order to protect Buffy and Dawn, protecting Dawn and fighting with the Scoobies after Buffy died, simply listening to Buffy when she came back from the dead, comforting Buffy when everyone else abandoned her and not asking for anything in return, sacrificing himself to close the Hellmouth (among such things) are hardly selfish acts of love 🙂 Yes, in s6, Spike tried to convince Buffy that she belonged with him "in the shadows," but he was trying to tap into her dark side (if she had one). Plus, she was the one who went to be with him "in the shadows." She wanted to retreat to the darkness.

I don't really get that. Why does "I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this world again" not qualify as exactly that?

Because Buffy wasn't in love with Spike at that point. She still had feelings for him, but I don't think she was in love with him at that point. Plus, she was trying to make a point to Xander that she was willing to kill someone she loved if it meant saving the world (preventing a greater evil). I doubt it would have had the same effect on Xander if Buffy said she loved Spike because we all know how Xander felt about him.

Love your posts Britt!
He did that for her

I really don't think he did do that for her. I think he did that for himself. At that point I don't think he thought Buffy loved him at all but that didn't matter to him. Not all love is selfish. When you really love someone you can look beyond yourself like Angel did. He loved Buffy more than anything else but when Joyce came to him and gave the whole spiel...
'when it comes to you, Angel - Buffy's not a slayer. She's just like any other young woman in love. You're all she can see of tomorrow. But I think we both know there's gonna be some hard choices ahead. If she can't make them, you're going
to have to

And that he did. Angel sacrificed his own happiness so Buffy could have a normal life. What Buffy wanted didn't seem as important to Spike. Nothing could have made Spike leave Buffy I don't think. Which is really romantic but yes a little selfish. Angel was able to see beyond himself for Buffy's happiness in the long run.

Spike turned his back of everything that had defined him for over a hundred years because of how much he loved Buffy

I don't know that he did. For me anyway what is so important to Spike's narrative and what made him unique from any other soulless vampire ,was his enormous capacity to love, despite being a ruthless killer. That's what drew me to him anyway. He loved his mother even after he was turned, he loved Dru so much and he loved Buffy. Getting a soul for the person he loved really doesn't go against what defined him in my opinion in fact it completely validates what makes him unique as a vampire. Like romeo before him Spike has always been in love with the idea of love.

I have to admit something though.... I'm one of the few Bangel shippers (I think) who prefers Spike to Angel. There would be no question that I'd pick Spike. But I just feel Spike is wrong for Buffy. I just don't think she could ever love him the same way she loved Angel. And for that reason I can't ship Spuffy.

Having said that credit where credit is due. You guys really have made me re-examine Spike and Buffy's relationship. I didn't really see any love between them before but now I don't think I can realistically deny they had their own kind of love. I just don't see Buffy loving Spike in the same way, but obviously thats just my unpopular opinion.

When Spike was on his way out of town to go get his soul he said "bitch is going to get what she deserves." The whole time he was fighting for his soul he kept saying he wanted to "give her what she deserved." When he comes back and tells Buffy he's got a soul in Beneath You he says "I wanted to give you what you deserve." With all of that, I think it's pretty impossible to deny Spike did it for her. He wanted to be the man she deserved. He knew he couldn't love her and give her all she deserved as an "evil soulless thing" so he went to change that.

Let's examine the times Angel WAS selfish in his love. How about all of season 3 up to the point of him deciding to leave? After what happened in season 2, it should have been BLATANTLY obvious to him that he couldn't stay. But he tried anyway. And let's use the in my opinion kind of twisted logic that puts Spike getting his soul for Buffy as a selfish thing... Angel left so that Buffy could grow so that they could be together in the future. Or even Angel left so he didn't have to live with the guilt of holding Buffy back. You can take ANY loving act and make it selfish if you want.

I agree with a lot of what you say here, but I think what was meant by "Spike turned his back of everything that had defined him for over a hundred years because of how much he loved Buffy" was the whole being evil thing. He didn't turn his back on loving people, obviously. He turned his back on being evil. On being soulless. On being a monster.

I would like to point something out though. At the beginning of your post, you started by saying Spike getting his soul wasn't for Buffy, it was for him and then you say the bolded part down here. Do you believe the bolded part or are you trying to make a point?

I have to admit something though.... I'm one of the few Bangel shippers (I think) who prefers Spike to Angel. There would be no question that I'd pick Spike. But I just feel Spike is wrong for Buffy. I just don't think she could ever love him the same way she loved Angel. And for that reason I can't ship Spuffy.
I've heard a lot of people say they don't think Buffy could love Spike the same way she loved Angel and that's why they don't ship Spuffy... but no two loves are the same. She could never love anyone the way she loved Angel and she could never love anyone the way she loved Spike. Every love is the same. Angel was her first love and he will ALWAYS be in her heart and she will ALWAYS love him... but just because her love for Spike is different doesn't mean it's not as strong.

Having said that credit where credit is due. You guys really have made me re-examine Spike and Buffy's relationship. I didn't really see any love between them before but now I don't think I can realistically deny they had their own kind of love. re-examining... that's something, huh? haha 🙂

In response to the whole boxset vs. original airing/whether or not watching the series in order affects shipping...I'd perhaps like to just admit right here that I'm a really, really weird Spuffy. It's my absolute OTP now, but it really wasn't for a long time.

I'm a relatively recent fan of BTVS. Started in March of this year, finished in a few months watching the episodes practically nonstop. A few episodes a night was basically my ritual...much to the detriment of my schoolwork and sleep schedule, eep. Anyway, I started from the complete beginning and watched every episode in order. I already knew about Bangel and Spuffy, and I admit, I was a Bangel when I was watching Seasons 1-3. And part of Season 4. (Hated Riley, but now I appreciate him a lot more. That's another topic, though 😉) At that point though, I really, really didn't get Spuffy. In fact, I was opposed to Spike just because I knew he and Buffy "got together" at some point. But then I watched Season 5- and Fool For Love, Intervention, The Gift, (basically the back half of Season 5) completely won me over. Throw in Season Six (especially the tenderness in the beginning of that season...sigh) and Season Seven, and I'm a Spuffy for life.

(Oh, and then AtS happened. Which made me all the more sure that Angel was on a different path than Buffy.)

^Sorry about the odd little shipper bio there. I guess I'm really trying to make the point that I understand shipping Bangel and shipping Spuffy. And that I watched from the very beginning of the series, and I don't feel that Bangel loyalty at all. But I think I changed because I watched the characters grow from the very beginning, and I like to think that I grew a little along with them. Most everything that happened just felt perfectly natural, in-character, and thoughtfully written.

I'd also like to point out that Angel was on BTVS for three seasons. Season 1 was probably a half season, yeah, but it still told a complete story. Spike was on BTVS for longer, but he only became an love interest in season 5-7. I don't think you can really count how long the couples lasted as a factor in shipping.

Aww, I'd like to think I grew a little along with them too :)
I really don't think he did do that for her. I think he did that for himself.

I honestly think it was both. In "Beneath You," Spike asked her, "It's what you wanted right?" When she then asked why, he said "Why does a man do what he mustn't for her? To be hers." Spike later admitted to Buffy that he got his soul back for her in "Sleeper." He also mentioned in "Never Leave Me" that he "saw a man about a girl." He wanted to become the man that Buffy deserved. So, there's no doubt that Spike wanted to get his soul for Buffy. Yet, at the same time, he knew it was the right thing to do, to fight for his soul if he wanted to be good. Once he got his soul, he literally gained some humanity back and Buffy recognized that.

YAY!!! Glad you're seeing the love 😀 That's all I can ask for, even if you don't ship Spuffy. But, maybe I should make a list of all the times and ways Buffy has shown that she loves Spike 🙂

I understand that evil is what was being refered to but I disagree that evil is all that defined Spike for a hundred years. Its a question of which identity is stronger. And I think Spikes ability to love was more a defining character than evil. As it is what made him unique.

I would like to point something out though. At the beginning of your post, you started by saying Spike getting his soul wasn't for Buffy, it was for him and then you say the bolded part down here. Do you believe the bolded part or are you trying to make a point?

I meant he got his soul for his love for Buffy not for Buffy herself. If that makes sense.

Let's examine the times Angel WAS selfish in his love. How about all of season 3 up to the point of him deciding to leave? After what happened in season 2, it should have been BLATANTLY obvious to him that he couldn't stay. But he tried anyway.

I think he struggled with leaving for a while. And significantly he did respect Buffy's wishes when she said she didnt wanna see him. Bare in mind he was just out of a hell dimension and was trying to figure things out. He did the right thing in the end.

And let's use the in my opinion kind of twisted logic that puts Spike getting his soul for Buffy as a selfish thing...

Can you really not see how getting a soul so he could love Buffy seems self motivated? I understand you guys trying to make the point it was for Buffy but Buffy had made it clear she did not love or want him at that point, vehemently so in 'seeing red'...

I'm not saying I don't have feelings for you. I do. But it's not love. I could never trust you enough for it to become that.

So it seems terribly self motivated to me. Him not taking into account her feelings. I don't think that's twisted logic. Its old regular logic.
