Bangel vs. Spuffy Round 2

Wasn't that sweet how Buffy spent the night in Angel's cot stroking his arm?

Or when Buffy and Angel slept in that abandoned house holding each other and staring into each others eyes?

How about when they grasped hands and their love presented itself by causing flames to burst from their shared passion?

By the way; this is opposite name day so go ahead and just fill in "Angel" with "William the Bloody Delicious Vampire."

All kidding aside; I can accept when Bangel's claim Buffy loved Angel more. I don't believe it; but I can accept that you believe it. But to try and tell anyone that Buffy didn't love Spike in anything other than a ("Oh god I wanna run my fingers through that platinum hair and make him call me slayer.") way; you can't expect people not to say that's wrong.

Obviously this is all opinions; but for every one our opinion is the truth to us.

Back to the original run VS. boxset watching. In March 1997 I was thirteen going on fourteen. I watched from the entire beginning and can honestly say I didn't care for Angel & Buffy's thing until after he went evil. Because that was when their story became interesting. Personally I was way more interested in Will/Oz and Cander.

I don't necessarily think more fans being Bangel's having watched the show at a younger age is a quantifier with any merit. Of course in the teen years more people are gonna gravitate towards the "Our love will last forever." rather than the "Our love will last for five hours straight." vibe; which is how the two relationships started.

I would like to leave you with one of my favorite quotes.

"I'd go to my trailer and the wardrobe department had left my clothes for the shoot and it would be a sock. In films you can have the luxury of covering yourself before the shoot, but on TV you don't have that -- it was just 'get in there'. I'd stand there with this sock hiding things waiting to shoot the scene and Sarah would come over and tug at the sock." - JM

LMAO at the quote!
Ok, so I'm gonna reply to my 'disagree's', lol. Gotta have the last word!

GrrArghx disagrees: And telling someone their opinion is false is incredibly insulting to those of us who disagree with you. We're all entitled to our own opinions and it doesn't make any of more "wrong" or "right" than the next person.
Like you said, we're all entitled to have our own opinions and have a right to disagree with each other. That's what I meant when I used the word 'false': I disagree with the Bangels that believe Buffy lied when she told Spike she loved him. Obviously an opinion can never be absolutely 'false' or 'true', and neither is mine. I don't see how my opinion is anymore insulting than any other opinion posted here.

Kean disagrees: It's even more unfortunate that you have to drag the whole B/A section of fandom through the mud to defend your ship.
Ok, first of all, my post mentioned 'some Bangels', not 'the whole B/A section of fandom'. Secondly, I didn't drag anyone or anything through the mud - what I stated was a fact: some Bangels believe Buffy didn't mean it when she told Spike she loved him. This is however out of character and simply a discredit to her.

It seems whoever disagreed with my post never presented any actual arguments against my opinion.

Joss also said Buffy loved Spike. So, I think it's safe to say it's a truth, even if one ultimately ships Bangel :)

Now some of the arugments I'm going to make are going to be new and some of them you may have heard before, but for the benefit of some of the newbies, here we go...

Before I go any further what I going to say may sound a little controversial and stir things up a little but hey if we didn't have that, where's the fun? In all seriousness I'm attempting to understand, both the characters and also where both shippers are coming from.

For it's about trying to look at certain aspects logically and fairly but also regarding my own emotional response to what I see, which I believe is just as important.

I see many Spuffy fans being hard on Angel and many Bangels saying they don't see how Buffy loved Spike etc, so I'm going to look at why this maybe the case.

Spike/Spuffy

I've said many a time I don't judge Spike for his unsoulled actions, but what I'm by that is that I don't judge Spike for his unsoulled actions. We can't have it both ways. I judge anything he does before he gets a soul by humans standards, which in my eyes, looking at it dispassionately, is fair. Now your spuffies will say "why so hard on Spike, look at all the wonderful things he did etc" or "He's a work in progress, give him time etc."

Hey, I'm not getting at the guy, but as I say, if take a reasonable moral human and turn them, they are playing by a different set of internal impulses that may lead them any which way, generally their actions are from a human perspective generally worse than their human counterparts. William was a gentle, person who wouldn't harm a fly but when turned he was turned, he wasn't just any old vampire, he was one of the most violent, with a reputation second only to Angelus. He didn't just kill for food, he killed for sport, akin to the way Angelus evil was about art. He saw the Slayers, saw the burdens and weaknesses, exploited them and used it against them to kill them.

This proof to me at least of a shift in his psychological disposition. Yes vampires have humanity in them but their general behaviour and perspective, is relatively removed from our own.

Vampires have free will within their disposition but what's motivating or inhibiting a vampire isn't the same as that of a human. This is why I refuse to judge any of his actions in the same way as I would a human. I'm reluctant to say "Well done soullessSpike" for some things and "I don't blame because of the lack of soul" for other things.

You may say about Angel(us)? I'd say a resounding "yes" to that lol. I don't judge him for his soulless actions, but I'll go into more detail with that in a minute. In any case though, you have to admit I'm still treating both vampires the same at this point. So in the case of the Spike this includes everything from the AR, to getting soul. I can see Spuffy fans not liking this, but with all this said, it doesn't mean these actions, seemingly positive or negative, have no meaning or didn't mean anything to Buffy because they did. We can also judge the reactions to Spike's actions. Here though I'm being more or less clinical about the whole thing.

Do I still hear the cries of "Cut the guy some slack". If anything, I'm actually dispelling the idea that human behaviour is the default for the vampire, it isn't, vampire behaviour is the default for a vampire. Now this may have traits of humanity mixed in but generally it's different from our own. Humans tend to view serial killers and rapists as bad, however most vampires would consider someone like Angelus a legend. So it becomes a matter of perspective. Spike on the other hand in the latter Btvs years would be considered a vampire abomination. So staying on this scale, it's not about Spike being a better person per se, but choosing the behaviour more akin to a moral human or even hero. So it's more about him decerning his personal and moral identity. This is why I see season 6 as the existential season. It's the classic, where do we go from here, making choices and being responsible for those choices. For Spike and Buffy it's about finding themselves and attempting to find their moral identity. If Spike actually got his chip out at the end of Season 6, then I still would judge him anyway because it's about finding his purpose. If he then decided his purpose was to kill Buffy, then at least his solving his moral identity crisis.

Looking at it from a metaphoric perspective, in Season 6 it really underscores the existential them. Spike is not inherently one thing or the other, but his actions make him into the person he becomes in Grave and Season 7 onwards. As a thought experiment, imagine a human who are doing more and more acts evil from a human perspective and eventually won the respect of an evil but incredibly picky vampire and eventually was turned.

The other perspective here is the emotional element. So we have to talk about the horrid AR. I've seen a lot of Bangels get upset by it as do Spuffies and my initial reaction was shock as well.

Some fans say "It was a mistake" or something along those lines. Whereas others would "A mistake???!!!"" "Are you mad?!" and see it as making excuses for something so heinous. I suppose it's partly because it seemed as though Spike was good or becoming a better man. If someone says they love and then do something to betray you, it almost seems more hurtful, more intrusive.

With Angelus, it's almost like "Well at least you know where you stand". He was monster, pure and simple and he never claimed to love Buffy.

So some Bangels are saying, "If Spike is saying treat me more like a man, we'll judge as as harshly, Angelus never asked for that."

When we talk about Spike, although I don't think it's fair to judge him like a human, it doesn't mean I can't be touched by his positive actions or shocked by his mistakes.

I think it may have been Zoe who talked about the gangs reactions to Spike's feelings. Now while I totally understand their reactions, I still identify with him. I don't agree with his actions in Crush, I do know what it's like to feel rejection and care about someone who does feel the same. One of the most frightening things is the sympathise or understand a 'monster' but I can. I don't understand all their actions but certainly some of their feelings and reactions. I mean who didn't get teary when he got rejected in FFL and was touched when he put down the gun and offered her comfort on the Back Steps.

Angel(us) Bangel

Now here I'm not so much comparing but this is something I just wanted to get out there. I did actually posit in one of my theories on Angel that he's suffering from a form of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Many people think it's cop out or the Spike never had a Spikelus to blame his past crimes on but as I said above, who's blaming? I'd say that perhaps either the restoration or indeed the losing of his soul may have, against his will fragmented his persona. Although they have things in the common they are so different in their behaviour. Maybe this isn't only exlcusive to Angel. Dru was very chaste in human life, she hated her 'gift' and seem loving and caring. When became a vampire, although she was able to love Spike, she's very sexual, revels in her psychic abilities and is quite the sadist. She was a willing participant in Angelus game of immorality with Spike both in the 1800s an the 1990s. People simply say she insane but she knew what she was doing as far as I'm concerned.

But going on Angel's psychological ailment here, I don't like people saying that it makes him weak somehow. In same way if you had two soldiers fighting in a war and one comes back with Post Traumatic Syndrome and the other doesn't, I wouldn't call the one who has it weak. Some people don't have the coping resources to deal with certain events. Even if argue that evil is, as evil is or weak is as weak is then I'll say if anything Angel has a more a handicap in that respect, but I wouldn't argue that anyway...

Going to the emotional aspect, this is why I empathise with Angel. Depsite his weaknesses he keeps on trying. StarSlayer and I were talking about Amends and my defense of Angel was more or less emotional. When he was going to kill himself, he wasn't intentionally being a vicious bastard or anything, he felt nihilistic and truly hated himself for what he had done. I don't even think he's being necessarily selfish. If you're feeling that low, even if someone says they love you, you can't hear it, trust me. Angel is so afraid of even the remote possibility of messing up,( and people do fail and mess up it's a part of life) he'd rather die than have the remote chance of being a monster again. If you're wondering about it hurting Buffy, I would say he could reason in the long run Buffy would simply move on and would be better off without him anyway along with the reast of the world.

Where does this leave us?

This isn't about excuses or moral superiority but about giving insight into why I relate more to Angel. I mean, I'm not even a Bangel or a Spuffy, but hey...I can still relate to their triumphs and failures.

Any on the point about purity and non purity. Maybe purity is the wrong word but certainly with Bangel there are aspects that are more black and white.

Angel was evil when he didn't have a soul and Bangel also finished when he didn't have a soul, but Spuffy is more 'messy'. Buffy and Spike became sexually intimate when he didn't have a soul and there was mutual abuse there and when he got a soul, they were sort of...what? They certainly WERE NOT a 'holding hands' couple and Buffy has canonically stated that more than once. I can sort of see why Bangel fans who needs things to be 'more defined' can't see the romantic love. My mother detested both Bangel and Spuffy and any relationship with a vampire (although she had a soft spot for Cangel) but even she said, she didn't think Buffy loved Spike romantically. Now hay, Spuffers, I agree with you that Buffy loved Spike, at least in Season 7 but you have to admit, it's a little more ambiguous, but that's what I love about it. The reason I believe they loved each other is because I don't believe after everything, Buffy would lie to Spike, even if it were a beautiful lie, but to defnd Bangels for a bit I think there are a great many of them who simply don't see it as clear cut enough to say that she did love him based what they saw. In their eyes the actions could be construed as a beautiful friendship. They may have felt this way even if Bangel never existed, am I wrong Bangels? THIS is what they mean when she say that Buffy didn't love Spike in the same way. It's almost patronizing to say no two loves are the same but what they are saying is, because of the lack of holding hands, its more ambigious than "I love you, you love me, lets go steady"

Although the truth is, Buffy didn't want a relationship at all at that time anyway. It had nothing to do with Spike per se, as someone already said.

I'm obviously more invested in Buffy, Spike and Angel moving on. If they happen to catch up in the future and Angel shanshu's and they have babies, fine or if Spike finds Buffy ready to commit to him, then also great, but I don't see Buffy as Angel or Spike's girl, she's her own girl, just like, now, Angel and Spike are their own men.

Exellente Post -
It's always a treat reading what you post Kana 🙂

I party agree. Despite killing people once he was turned, William still wanted to care for his mother, which is a huge contrast to Angelus who killed his entire family. William also became more of a monster after learning things from Angelus, which one could argue turned him into William the Bloody. "Dru sired me, but you made me a monster." I'm not saying "Give Spike a break" for that. I'm simply saying Spike's behavior as a vampire was greatly influenced by Angelus.

You may say about Angel(us)? I'd say a resounding "yes" to that lol. I don't judge him for his soulless actions, but I'll go into more detail with that in a minute. First, I don't soulless Spike, or Angelus for that matter, as I would a humans either because they simply were not humans. There were vampires without souls. Second, although I judge soulless Spike differently than Angelus based on his good deeds after falling in love with Buffy, I still know he's a vampire with no soul. There's still a demon (a violent one) that can resurface and take over Spike, and his ability to be good. In that sense, I do cut Spike some slack. He tried to be good even without a soul, but the reality was he couldn't. He needed his soul.

So staying on this scale, it's not about Spike being a better person per se, but choosing the behaviour more akin to a moral human or even hero. So it's more about him decerning his personal and moral identity. This is why I see season 6 as the existential season. I still stand by what I said about Amends, but I know there are other ways of looking at that scene 🙂 Also, I don't see him as a vicious bastard or anything if that makes you feel better, lol. Although he gets on my nerves in that scene, I know Angel's a good guy/champion at heart.

Now hay, Spuffers, I agree with you that Buffy loved Spike, at least in Season 7 but you have to admit, it's a little more ambiguous, but that's what I love about it. :banghead: LOL - this is becoming my new favorite smiley

Even before Buffy said "I love you," it was not at all ambiguous that she had romantic feelings for Spike. Sure, it wasn't the conventional hand-holding and kissing type of way to show love, but that's what I love about it because it makes their story different. Her actions (the big and subtle ones) constantly showed that she loved Spike, especially in s7. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that Buffy didn't lie when she finally said she loved Spike. Buffy doesn't lie when she says she loves someone. Plus, what other feeling could cause fire to burst when two hands are locked together like that? It has to be friendship because everyone knows "friendship conquers all" 🙄

It just gets a little frustrating that Spuffies constantly have to defend that a love between Buffy and Spike even existed. When Joss and other writers even said Buffy loved Spike, and I still hear arguments that Buffy didn't, it honestly gets annoying. Even if one ultimately ships Bangel, that's fine but I don't get how some can ignore what Joss and the writers have said about Spuffy.

As much as I love reading the 'ship debates, you do know they're never end, right?

The Spuffies will never surrender, and the Bangels will never be swayed.

In the end, it's not about which 'ship is "better." It's not about who loved Buffy more.

It's all just personal preference.

Buffy loves both vampires, and the relationships she shared with them were as different as light and day. There's really no comparison that can be made.

In spirit of discussion, though, I leave you with these quotes for discussion purposes:

Spuffy

1.) Her relationship with Spike was fantastic because there was an ambiguity there, we don't really know what we're rooting for. She doesn't know what she wants out of it. She feels like she's using him for sex. It was a very grown up relationship and that matched her arc at that point in the show. -- Danny Strong (Chosen DVD Collection Bonus Disk)

2.) He's definitely, in many ways, her counterpart, and closer to her than a lot of the other characters. He goes to the dark side of what Buffy is. He goes to what Slayers are, and what it means to be something different in this world. -- David Fury

3.) Spike is something special. Spike retained enough compassion. Some part of his soul is still was always there that allowed him to fall in love with Buffy where no vampire could. -- David Fury

4.) Spike has earned Buffy's love in ways Angel couldn't contemplate. -- Hercules T. Strong, Ain't It Cool News Writer

5.) James, on Season 5 Spike:
I don't think much, man, because I'm in love with Buffy now. So, I'm not going to do anything to make her mad, you know? I could be reformed, trying to get her to love me. I'm going to try to be the guy that she wants to have. It was my idea last year to put Spike in Riley's clothes. He's trying to be you know, "What does she like? If she likes wholesome, I'll be wholesome. I'll try that". -- James Marsters (Pasadena, 8-01)

6.) Buffy was in love with Spike the moment their hands clasped. - Joss Whedon

Exactly. I 'ship Spuffy, but I don't deny what Buffy and Angel had (or have, I guess).

Our Buffy shows her love through actions not words. And I agree, sometimes it gets really difficult when I hear fans deny that Buffy loved Spike at all. I mean, come on, denial much? Joss said she loved Spike. Buffy said she loved Spike. Tara knew it. Giles knew it. What else do you need? Her actions proved she loved Spike. She saved him time and time again. She protected him, trusted him with her mother, her sister...need I continue? But some of the Bangels call his "friendly." Tell me, do you normally sleep in the same bed with your friends, gazing into thier eyes and stroking their arms? I sure don't. But I rest my case. I'm done arguing. I know that I love Spuffy that's all I need. I don't need to prove anything to anyone. I know Buffy loved Spike.

Amen.

Lovely quotes
Like you said, we're all entitled to have our own opinions and have a right to disagree with each other. That's what I meant when I used the word 'false': I disagree with the Bangels that believe Buffy lied when she told Spike she loved him. Obviously an opinion can never be absolutely 'false' or 'true', and neither is mine. I don't see how my opinion is anymore insulting than any other opinion posted here.

Your opinion that Buffy loved Spike isn't insulting. However, your "opinion" that whomever disagrees with you is "simply false" and is "dragging Buffy through the mud" is. Believe me, I have zero problems with you disagreeing with me about that. I just found it insulting for you to say we're wrong and that we're insulting Buffy as well.

I love Buffy. She's my favorite character. And, I don't have to drag anyone through anything to defend B/A. My dislike for Spuffy has zero to do with my love for Bangel and vice versa. Some of you seem to be insinuating that the only reason we don't believe Buffy loved Spike is because we're Bangels which is a completely unfair accusation.

My point was, would you not be insulted if I told you you're 100% wrong for believing Buffy loved Spike and that if you did believe it, you were insulting her character as well? Or do you just think it's okay to tell that someone that only because you have "facts" to prove it and they haven't provided any opposite your's?

Ok, first of all, my post mentioned 'some Bangels', not 'the whole B/A section of fandom'. Secondly, I didn't drag anyone or anything through the mud - what I stated was a fact: some Bangels believe Buffy didn't mean it when she told Spike she loved him. This is however out of character and simply a discredit to her.

I know this isn't directed toward me, but: yes, some Bangels not believing Buffy's "I love you" is a fact. However, Buffy being out of character by saying but not meaning she loved Spike is not a fact. It's your opinion, in which many of us disagree with.

It seems whoever disagreed with my post never presented any actual arguments against my opinion.

And, why should we? I don't see the point if all you're going to do is tell me I'm wrong and accuse me of "discrediting and insulting" my favorite character. I (usually) post in these threads because I like seeing other perspectives on the show. I always find it interesting how differently we see it and understand it and love it.

But, I don't and should never feel like I should have to defend myself because I 'ship a certain couple.

I'll probably come back in a bit to make a post to showcase my entire side of the debate, but for now I think I'm just going to return to the lurking I was doing before this.

It WAS a little more ambiguous. I mean, with Bangel she was in a hold hands type of relationship and everyone around them knew it. They knew "Angel is Buffy's boyfriend and if we asked her if he was, she'd say yes." Spuffy was never like that. Even in Chosen talking to Angel Buffy said "He's not" in response to the question "is he your boyfriend?" She then said "But he is in my heart." She loved him. I believe that in the deepest part of me. But it was more ambiguous. It wasn't as clean cut as Bangel. I agree with Kana in the sense of that ambiguity makes it more beautiful. Spuffy's love wasn't blatantly obvious to any casual observer, but it was very bright. It was understated but it shined like nothing else.

I do get what you're saying how hard it is to constantly have to defend the love between Spike and Buffy, but I think you're "assuming crash positions" here. Kana did say Buffy loved him.

While there was ambiguity with how their relationship was defined , especially in s7, there was no ambiguity whatsoever with their feelings IMO. Just because you're not someone's boyfriend doesn't mean you don't love them. Angel (and I'm sure some viewers) were looking for a label to place on Spuffy. Are they boyfriend/girlfriend, just friends, friends with benefits, friends with romantic feelings for each other, etc? I guess that's where I see the ambiguity of their relationship, but I don't see it toward the question of whether they romantically loved each other.

I do get what you're saying how hard it is to constantly have to defend the love between Spike and Buffy, but I think you're "assuming crash positions" here. Kana did say Buffy loved him.

I wasn't referring specifically to Kana 🙂 I was generally referring to some Bangels (even ones not on the BB).

It's always a treat reading what you post Kana 🙂

Yours too. Although I'm not a shipper and you are, I think we're more or less rooted in the centre, perhaps a little left and right and of the middle.

I'm not saying "Give Spike a break" for that. I'm simply saying Spike's behavior as a vampire was greatly influenced by Angelus.

I actually would give Spike a break but not because he was influenced by Angelus. His evil was contrasted from Angelus. As I said, evil was like a sport for him whereas it was an art form for Angelus. While Angelus influenced him, I've always found his blaming Angelus for making him a monster, a little immature. If we're not assigning blame and we're simply saying Angelus is part of the causal chain, then I'd say, "So?" "What's your point?" My main point is despite his 'soulfulness' before obtaining a soul, he was still too different psychologcially for me to judge him as I would a human, but if we are assigning responsibility we could blame Spike for being so weak willed and letting Angelus be his boss. I don't think it worked that way, though and I certainly don't blame their soulled counterparts for either.

I take a slightly different tack as it's not the default for a vampire to act like a human (in the moral sense). It's clear that Spike and Angelus behaviour is different but we have to be careful when we say how and why. If we give Spike too much of human disposition then he run the risks of making him more responsible for his evil deeds.

I love this paragraph 🙂

It's a difficult one because I honestly was flummoxed as to how we can make Spike an interesting case without making him, you know a bastard.

I still stand by what I said about Amends, but I know there are other ways of looking at that scene 🙂 Also, I don't see him as a vicious bastard or anything if that makes you feel better, lol. Although he gets on my nerves in that scene, I know Angel's a good guy/champion at heart.

I don't think we're a million miles apart. I see a good guy who was at a low point, you seem to see a good guy who should know better. Meh, we're not that far apart. 🙂.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you, I'm just attempting to understand both sides and using what I've seen on various forums. The fact that it defies convention and shows that romantic love isn't simply, "Let's you and I go steady".

This said, I'm still a little mindful by what Joss said. He said that Spike is more evolved than Angel, which I don't agree with. I think he's different that's all. He also said that before Spike got a soul his love for Buffy was selfish and possessive. Did he not see Intervention? So I have be careful about what Joss says about such things. I don't even need Joss to tell me that Buffy loves Spike, I can see it with my own eyes.

I guess that's where I see the ambiguity of their relationship, but I don't see it toward the question of whether they romantically loved each other. .

But some people (obviously Bangels) will define romantic love on Buffy's end by the answer to the question "is Spike her boyfriend?" They need a more concrete clear definition of their relationship in the way of a label. You're right, the label is where the ambiguity is but that's where a lot of people look to define the relationship. Spuffy is complicated and messy and that's what I love about it, but there are people out there who don't understand Spuffy because it's so complicated and messy and at any given time, it doesn't have a clear label. From the moment in Becoming when Spike comes to Buffy to help her so he can get Dru back, their relationship stops having a clear defined label (at that time the label was "enemies" but when Spike came to help, the water got mucky). It never regains that nice neat label thing it had. And I love that, but there are people out there who need the labels.

Exactly :) I keep thinking of Alyson now on HIMYM "Define the relationship," lol!
All the things you said about the label on Spuffy, I agree completely, and I wanted to add to that, that you see an amazing journey of these two, and each season had a different label, what I don't see much with Bangel (there are some labels, if I understand the meaning behind it, but not as much as Spuffy). Bangel had always had the label of "vampire in love with a Slayer and they can't be together", which can also apply in Spuffy's case, but that mostly belonged to them. And it didn't change much over the seasons. Also, they had the label "first love", and that particular label was doomed to change, and while it was still true, it didn't mean much anymore. They're, like, stuck in that label and that's the end of it. It's how I see it anyway, no throat slashing please!

Yours too. Although I'm not a shipper and you are, I think we're more or less rooted in the centre, perhaps a little left and right and of the middle.

Lol, maybe, which would explain why I was defending Bangel for a while. And I don't ship Bangel 🙂 But, don't get me wrong. I completely lean toward the Spuffy ship 😀

If we're not assigning blame and we're simply saying Angelus is part of the causal chain, then I'd say, "So?" "What's your point?" I don't think it worked that way, though and I certainly don't blame their soulled counterparts for either.

I agree that Spike's evil was different from Angelus' evil. It's interesting about the blame because I wonder if soulless Spike would have said the same thing to Angel after he fell in love with Buffy. I somewhat doubt it though because I think soulless Spike accepted that he was a monster (until that part of him that was still human decided to fight it), whereas Spike with a soul didn't want to be that monster anymore. He even felt guilty over it once he got his soul. For that reason, I don't know if I would call Spike's blaming of Angelus immature, but rather an excuse or an escape from his own guilty conscience.

True, which is why I've always seen it as a demon literally inside both Spike and Angel. A demon takes over the human body when a human became a vampire. In Spike's case though (as seen through the episodes), there was still some part of his humanity (not his soul obviously) that remained after he was sired, which allowed him to fall in love with Buffy and ultimately, defeat the demon inside. I know some argue that since Spike was different than Angelus in that case, Spike should be held more accountable for his actions. But, like you said, they were still soulless vampires (there was still a demon) and shouldn't be judged like humans.

I don't think we're a million miles apart. I see a good guy who was at a low point, you seem to see a good guy who should know better. Meh, we're not that far apart. 🙂

Lol, yep. That's the basics of it 🙂

I do agree with Joss though about that. Before Spike got his soul, his love for Buffy was a bit selfish in s5 because of his obsession (this was before Intervention though) and his love was a bit possessive in s6 (from Wrecked onward). But, I agree. I don't need Joss to tell me Buffy loved Spike because I saw it with my own eyes too 🙂

Yeah, the Buffybot was the bad part of Spike's love for Buffy. BUT, in season 6, he didn't want her (it?) anymore, he understood she wasn't Buffy, and he didn't like it. He loved Buffy, and that's connected to his speech in "Touched". His love for Buffy, starting from the end of season 5, through season 6, till season 7, it was pure. It wasn't at all selfish. I agree that his love for Buffy started as an obsession, rather than love. But it clearly changed. And in season 7 it was so obvious, IMO. It was enough to just look at Buffy and Spike's eyes, the way the acted around each other, spoke to each other, the connection which was so special and different from the love she had towards all the other scoobies... No, it wasn't friends love. It was love love, romantic love. And while I agree that Spuffy of season 5 wasn't much of a love (well, until the end of it anyway), and maybe, maybe Spuffy of season 6 wasn't a total love, by season 7 you just couldn't deny it. It stood right in front of our eyes, and it was a 100 percent love! That's why the "I love you" wasn't a lie. Buffy is a person who can't say those words so easily (as she said to Giles in "Intervention"). So when she says them, the only possibility is that she says the truth.

Yes yes yes. :D Love this post.

You got me thinking now. Am I a person who needs labels? I've always prided myself on that not being the fact... oh well.

I can agree that the boundaries are a lot less defined with Spuffy than they were with Bangel. I also agree that someone doesn't have to by my boyfriend (or girlfriend, as it is) for me to love them, even in a romantic way. I've said time and again that I do believe that Buffy loved Spike. And of course, by the end of Season 7, she wasn't "madly in love" with Angel anymore (cos that would be pathetic). Still, I think the reason why she had Spike wear the amulet and not Angel had more to do with organisational/narrative stuff, namely that Angel had to go back to his own show. The story arc there was messed up enough without having to have him brought back in the first place. Judging from what Joss always said about B/A, he would have loved to give them a proper happy ending (and I trust that he will, in the *very* distant future).

What I always found interesting though is the fact that SMG herself was a HUGE Bangel shipper (part of why I love that girl so much, hehe), so I found myself wondering if that has in any way influenced her portrayal of Season 7 Buffy? Maybe part of the ambiguity of Spuffy wasn't even the writers' intention (not to that extent anyway) but the fact that SMG was holding back?

And another question for the Spuffies among us: Do you think that Buffy would have looked at Spike twice if Angel had never left?

If Angel's doe eyes makes Cordelia's mouth drop; and there's no fang gangers around to see it, do they make out?

It was actually Sarah's idea to hook Buffy and Spike up. She told Joss, and he said something like: "no more vampires"! So I think she had a soft spot for Spuffy as well 🙂

I think that if Angel hadn't left, and if they hadn't broken up, Buffy wouldn't consider looking at another guys. But that was then. She was a teenaged girl in love in her first love. If he hadn't left till today, I think it's possible to say she would have felt differently, like she needs to move on from someone she has no future with. And I don't mean that she would stop loving him, I'm saying she would have woken up and realized they didn't have a future together. If Angel hadn't done that, her already grown kid inside of her would. Buffy changed over the years. So it's safe to say that if at that time another guy came by, she wouldn't have looked at him twice (even if it's Spike). But if they would have lasted till today... that's a different story. She would have moved on, maybe to Spike maybe not.

No. I don't think she held back at all. She may ship Bangel but she played Buffy's love for Spike very well in season 7. My advice: do a season 7 rewatch paying special attention and keeping in mind Buffy's love for Spike. You'll see it's blatantly obvious. Just because she doesn't say it all the time doesn't mean it's not there. Buffy's love for Spike was very understated yet so bright it was blinding. Watching season 7, you can see it grow very clearly. And if she was holding back, I'm pretty sure whoever was directing would tell her to stop.

EDIT: I thought maybe it was just me, but from reading the other responses, it seems I'm not the only one. I haven't heard enough to say Sarah favored Bangel over Spuffy... I've heard a lot of quotes from her positive about both ships and I've heard her say she will not choose between the two. I believe she said something along the lines of "I'm not choosing and I don't choose" at the Reunion.

And another question for the Spuffies among us: Do you think that Buffy would have looked at Spike twice if Angel had never left?

I don't think Spike would have come back if Angel had never left. The whole "if Angel had never left, what would be different" thing is interesting to think about, but in the end, it's pointless. I could say "if I had not listened to that guy at the bus station a few days ago so my purse didn't get stolen, I would still have my purse and my budget I worked so hard on would still work" but that doesn't change the fact my purse got stolen on Monday. Angel did leave and it was right for the Bangel relationship to end. It was becoming harmful to Buffy... He was just doing what he had to. And nothing is going to change that fact. What happened happened and asking if things were different (especially that early in the show) isn't going to change that and has no meaning whatsoever.

I've also read quotes by SMG favoring Spuffy. Even if she herself prefers Bangel over Spuffy, she's entitled to, but that doesn't mean I will, lol 😀

I also do not believe for one minute that SMG was holding back when it came to Spuffy. I can pinpoint the exact moment in "Chosen" when SMG's eyes just light up after the fire burst and she's looking at Spike. Her eyes looked exactly how they did when she was romantically in love with Angel. SMG is that good 🙂

And another question for the Spuffies among us: Do you think that Buffy would have looked at Spike twice if Angel had never left?

Maybe, maybe not. I think the better question would be whether Spike would have fallen in love with Buffy if Angel was still around, and acted on it. Buffy really didn't give Spike a second glance until "Intervention."

Oh, cool! I never knew she said something like that 🙂 Way to keep the peace SMG, lol!

I think my favorite has to be at the 2008 Paleyfest, when the question of Angel or Spike was presented, and she didn't respond. But, Michelle said, "Well, who's on stage?" referring to James, lol! 😀

haha oh Michelle!
Yeah, the Buffybot was the bad part of Spike's love for Buffy. BUT, in season 6, he didn't want her (it?) anymore, he understood she wasn't Buffy, and he didn't like it.

Yeah, I think Spike's "honeymoon," so to speak, with the Buffybot started ending the first time that she said, "Shall I run this program again?" What he thought that he was going to have was Buffy, or a reasonable facsimile thereof. Instead, he got WARREN'S version of what Buffy was, and, since we all know Warren's real opinion of women, it's little wonder that the bot was somewhat less than dynamic. Semi-moronic nympho Buffy was what Spike got, but it was heroic Slayer Buffy, with a side order of pro-Spuffy leanings that he wanted. Looked at it in that light, Spike's true feelings for Buffy were actually made more obvious by the fact that he realized very quickly that he wanted the whole Buffy package, not just the body and the sex. To paraphrase what he would say in Season 7, Spike saw the best and the worst of Buffy, and that's what he fell in love with.

HAHA and then James said "Take that, Angel!"
Or was it from another part of the Paleyfest...?

There's a part of me that will always believe that Angel is Buffy's true love. That there will be a piece of her heart that will always be with him for the rest of her life.
Sarah Michelle Gellar

Take that with a grain of salt because none of the people who post these quotes ever link to a legitimate source. Although it doesn't matter to me whether SMG prefers either ship. Actors portray characters; and it's what the character thinks that matters.

Oh and I also found this one...just so my Spuffies don't cry.

The thing about Buffy and Spike is they understand each other on a level that nobody else understands [them].
Sarah Michelle Gellar

So I'd say at best; she understands the "star crossed lovers" aspect of Bangel; while recognizing the mature emotional depth of Spuffy.
