Hmmmm.
To be honest I was tempted just to type that.
Alternatively, I'll talk a little about Bangel.
I personally don't think you can seperate the love from the lover and also relationships don't happen in a vacuum, i.e, they are not immune to circumstance. These sound like obvious statements, but I honestly think they have relevance in this discussion. To put it bluntly, if the above statement isn't true then surely Buffy and Angel would still be together. "But they still love each other" comes the predictable reply. Well, ok, maybe they do. No, scratch that, I believe they do but let us look at things more closely.
Now, as I sip my pinot grigio, I contemplate the words ofBuffy over the years in regards to Bangel. Now two sets of quotes stick in my mind.
BUFFY: Angel, when I look into the future, a-a... all I see is you! All I want is you.
ANGEL: I know the feeling.
Aww, now isn't that romantic? Buffy at 16, sees her future with Angel. Now couples can get married at say 18 and stay happily married for the rest of their lives. GREAT! So of course you can fall in love at a young age and stay in love. This argument is huge triumph for Bangels but you better believe I'm going to throw a spanner in the works...
Recently my brother got married and just before the event I was reading a book full of thought experiments. Now how can we predict how our future self will react to future circumstances. Also, will we still be in love with our partner in 10 years time, 29 years time or 50 years from now. Can we really tell? Now it's tempting to say it's all about faith but can we really commit ourselves to that? Now if we have no reason not to, then I suppose it's possible. Is this the case with Buffy and Angel?
BUFFY
What was the highlight of our relationship? When you broke up with me or when I killed you? I'm well aware of my stellar history with guys...
This happened subsequent to first quote. The circumstances were different and the broke up.
We all know how the rest of the speech goes, but how can 'Always and Forever' become, "Sometimes" and years "
IF EVER"?
When we get married, we make a commitment. I logically, cannot, know what's going to happen. We don't know if we'll still find them attractive or if they'll cheat on us in the future. We place faith that these things wont happen based upon our past and current experiences, but more importantly we make that investment. If we make a commitment, we (hopefully) make sure we get that return. It doesn't sound romantic but for this purpose, it isn't about being romantic it's about figuring out whether two people are in it for the long haul.
We work on it, time spent communication etc. Now does Bangel have either?
Did, Buffy say Angel you're the one so wait for me? The 'If Ever' is an important part of the speech we can't ignore. When we get married, me promise to love and cherish blah, blah etc. We don't say "I occasionally comtemplate our future but I don't really think that far a head, I don't know exactly who I'll end up with but some time in the future, maybe I'll settle down. Aww, how NOT romantic, but you know realistic.
Now maybe I'm being judgmental but I get WA point about brief encounters. To me proximity is extremely important. Now again, we'll get the predictable reply about long distance relationships but at the very least the validity of those relationships is communication and if Damage is anything to go by, then clearly Buffy and Angel haven't been communicating and for the record paying people to stalk your ex is not the same thing (TGIQ). It's about time spent and working on the relationship. Exes could always get toether kiss and make moony eyes at one another, but from where I'm standing that's not a relationship and certainly not an indication that things will work out. Hell, I know that from past experiences.
Now before Spuffy fans cheer, thinking they've got another recruit, that's simply not that case. I loved Bangel, and I love Spuffy, but I love Buffy more. I love that she decided she shouldn't define herself through an ever present man (or girl). The cookie dough speech is my favourite ship speech because it's so wonderfully 'anti-ship'. It's about self-discovery and understanding. If she was, is and is going to be, irrelevant, then she wouldn't have made the speech.
I suppose for shippers, they make a certain commitment. They identify themselves in the relationship or see the beauty of the relationship parellelled in their own, but what we need to understand, is that Buffy hasn't made such a commitment yet. If she had, then she'd be with Spike or Angel by now and not just for fleeting moments of kissage or sex.
If Buffy makes that declaration of investment (so romantic), then it will be self evident that she's chosen but until then, it's all about the dough.
