Biles?

You should explain to me what shipping even IS.

Like, part of the big deal behind Spike and Buffy (this is even emphasized in Season 8) is that Buffy is emotionally detached and is using Spike for sex...while Spike (being completely truthful before death in "Chosen") recognizes BUFFY DOES NOT LOVE HIM. And you know what? She doesn't.

That's a great story. But that's the story being told. How is supporting this "shipping"? What separates "shipping" and "enjoying a romantic arc"?

I stand by what I said: "shipping" Buffy/Giles is no more nonsensical than "shipping" any other couple, "canon" or not. So I'm gonna defend these Buffy/Giles people.

How is that emphasized in season 8? That ONLY happened in season 6. There isn't canonical evidence they even HAD sex after that.

And I do believe Buffy loved Spike... because I can see it in her eyes. Also because Joss told Sarah to play that with love... AKA Buffy loved Spike.

I ship Spike and Buffy because I believe they're right for each other. I enjoy their romantic arc and that is WHY I believe they're right for each other.

Shipping a ship that isn't romantic, yet trying to force them to be IS more nonsensical than shipping a ship that actually had a canon romantic arc. Even under your definition of shipping.

Leaving aside the arguments about other ships -- and I've already declared that I'm a Spuffy, though not (yet?) a full-on Spuffy since my main interest continues to be Giles --

I was deliberately restrained in the OP. I wasn't sure what to expect here, and thought it possible I would encounter some Biles shippers. I've posted elsewhere that I've learned in message boards to try and be respectful of other opinions, even if I've no clue whatsoever how the person could possibly arrive at that opinion. So I was trying to be respectful rather than contemptuous.

Now that I see that there appear to be no Biles shippers here, I don't need to worry about offending anyone, and therefore I can just say straight out that Biles is completely obscene and incestuous and gross, gross, gross. I don't even begin to understand how anyone can soil the beauty of the Giles-Buffy relationship by adding a sexual overlay to it.

I feel much better now.

How is that emphasized in season 8?

Her largest concern is being lovey-dovey with Angel. Spike's only really relevant in her threesome fantasies from near the beginning and, I think, shortly after Spike proper shows up. She's content in her super heaven with Angel.

She likes Spike. She finds Spike physically attractive. But she's not in love with him. There's a very distinct difference. Season 8 really sells it. She doesn't HATE Spike, but she does not love him.

That ONLY happened in season 6. There isn't canonical evidence they even HAD sex after that.

In season seven, Buffy has the weight of the world on her shoulders and Spike is the only one who ever throws her a bone by this point. Spike rarely, if ever, questions her. Spike is a magic sleeper agent. Spike got a soul for her. She doesn't love this man, but she's a man who makes her feel important. In an environment where she's CONSTANTLY seen close to failure and where she constantly feels like she's messing up, someone like Spike is EASY to give affection to. A Slayer must fight a never ending battle against evil that will never be fixed, but Spike is something she demonstrably DID fix. No, she's not in love with the target of that, but it's an appealing thing to latch onto and keep around.

Spike even recognizes this. Right before his death, he could be the hero who got the girl. He could've died having contently saved his princess...and he's William the Bloody, a poet. A romantic. It would've been his ideal death. But he didn't. He owned up to reality and died a man. That's the strength of Spike's character: as the Buffyverse's Waspinator (I hope you've seen Beast Wars. Great cartoon), he's constantly dragged around. Constantly made to be a joke by fate. He's even, by his OWN ADMISSION, "love's bitch." He recognizes his own relationship to romance and the ideal of true love as being one who is submissive and abused. Part of the greatness of Chosen as a finale is Spike finally taking things into perspective, being honest and in the greatest of ironies accepting harsh reality as he ascends to the status of the mythic hero of romantic (read: the general kind of romantic, not love romantic) stories. He ascends to the romantic hero as he accepts the lack of romantic elements in reality. He got to die content with COMPLETE HARSH HONESTY. There's something beautiful in that.

And don't think I'm bashing on Buffy. If I was in her situation? I'd do the same thing. A lot of us would.

And I do believe Buffy loved Spike... because I can see it in her eyes. Also because Joss told Sarah to play that with love... AKA Buffy loved Spike.

And that's fine and your right to interpretation. I just don't buy that even slightly.

I ship Spike and Buffy because I believe they're right for each other. I enjoy their romantic arc and that is WHY I believe they're right for each other.

But their romantic arc isn't about them being right for each other, unless it's a really weird version of being right. How does this even track on any level?

Shipping a ship that isn't romantic, yet trying to force them to be IS more nonsensical than shipping a ship that actually had a canon romantic arc. Even under your definition of shipping.

No, it's the same thing. It's really the exact same thing. None of Buffy's "canon" romances are technically "right" or "perfect", they're flawed relationships between human beings and the stories that occur as a result. "Shipping" any of them as a preferred couple is fine (I...guess...?), but it has grounds in being illogical and willingly blind of certain details.

And honestly, on that note, why can't these Giles/Buffy people have their fun? What would this extend to? Discussion? Normal shippers ALREADY make that difficult. Fanfic? Dooon't read it. I don't read fanfic, but if someone actually pulled off a father/daughter surrogate relationship as genuinely romantic, I'd give them props for being a good writer. It's not GOOD or HEALTHY, but if it was convincing I'd give them props. But I read the Marquis de Sade, so when it comes to fiction I have a high tolerance for "WHAT JUST HAPPENED WITH THOSE TWO?"

Why can't the Buffy/Giles people have their fun? Let them believe what they believe. They're not hurting anybody.

(I'm never gonna understand shipping, but I DO understand hypocrisy when I see it. And that kinda bums me out, man.)

I think that's a pretty radical interpretation of the text. I think she loves him. I think it's quite obvious she loves him and cares for him. If I had my season 8 books with me here, I'd go find you the panels... For now, I'll just leave it as "that's a pretty radical interpretation of the text.

This is your interpretation. I just don't buy that even slightly.

But their romantic arc isn't about them being right for each other, unless it's a really weird version of being right. How does this even track on any level?
It is about them being right for each other if you interpret it like I do... and like so many others do. They grow with each other, they bring out the best in each other. To me, that is them being right for each other. Obviously, you don't see it the way I do... does that mean either of see it "wrong"? No. It just means we see it differently.

No, it's the same thing. It's really the exact same thing. The bolded part is the crux of your argument. The problem is, to someone who sees it differently, you're wrong. To me, Spuffy was about them being right for each other. Well not really, that's a drastic simplification but I don't have the time or energy to really get into it. Point is to me the crux of your augment is wrong... therefore your argument is flawed.

My argument is even under your definition of shipping (which in using it, I can understand why you think shipping is ridiculous), it would make more sense to ship a relationship that had a canonical arc because at least then this idea they were "right" for each other wasn't being pulled out of nowhere. It works with both of our views... Not just mine or yours (like yours works for just yours, implying everyone else's opinions are just wrong).

And honestly, on that note, why can't these Giles/Buffy people have their fun? What would this extend to? Discussion? Normal shippers ALREADY make that difficult. Fanfic? Dooon't read it. I didn't say they were hurting anyone... or that they couldn't have their fun. I don't care. If someone wants to ship these two, fine. I think it's gross and disturbing... but i can't stop them. We're all entitled to our opinions and creative expression... No matter whether I agree with you or not.

I think that's a pretty radical interpretation of the text. I think she loves him. I think it's quite obvious she loves him and cares for him. If I had my season 8 books with me here, I'd go find you the panels... For now, I'll just leave it as "that's a pretty radical interpretation of the text.

It's...a radical interpretation of the text that I think Buffy being content in a heavenly environment with Angel means she doesn't share that deeper emotion with Spike when all she does by comparison is fantasize about him sexually?

If you don't agree, sure. I'll accept that. The fact you think this is a "radical" intepretation...well. Alright.

This is your interpretation. I just don't buy that even slightly.

The core difference between you and me: I explain my interpretations. You can't put much words to yours. Not much, anyway. Might be why I'm having a hard time considering your argument. You've mostly cited Gellar's acting. Not a horrible position, but I sat down and gave you the benefit of dissecting my view of Spike's character arc and why it's inconsistent with your views. I'd ask the same luxury, but I have a feeling I'm not getting it.

It is about them being right for each other if you interpret it like I do... and like so many others do. They grow with each other, they bring out the best in each other. To me, that is them being right for each other. Obviously, you don't see it the way I do... does that mean either of see it "wrong"? No. It just means we see it differently.

I'm not saying you're WRONG. I'm saying your "ship", whatever that even is, is no better or worse than any other one. And...it isn't. At all. It's no smarter, dumber, better, worse, logical or illogical than any other.

If you can't come up with the effort of explaining your position (the luxury I offered you, by the way, in relation to MY position), you are not allowed to call my argument flawed or wrong. I don't accept that and, quite frankly, that's inconsiderate.

If you don't have the time, don't pursue this debate...especially with someone who is willing to type and dissect as much as I am.

My argument is even under your definition of shipping (which in using it, I can understand why you think shipping is ridiculous),

You never did fully explain what shipping, like, is.

it would make more sense to ship a relationship that had a canonical arc because at least then this idea they were "right" for each other wasn't being pulled out of nowhere. It works with both of our views... Not just mine or yours (like yours works for just yours, implying everyone else's opinions are just wrong).

Not really. It's my understanding that shipping would be entirely pointless if it stuck just to romances that happened (because that would just be enjoying romantic elements of a story. Shipping wouldn't be a thing if you were restricted to main text. Or so I assume. Feel free to correct me. Really). Shipping, on the whole, is inherently divorced from the narrative largely for the purposes of fan derived fiction. Two people being "right" or "compatible" is as easy as observing them within a certain circumstance and seeing how that plays out narratively. Some characters don't have opportunities in the main text. You could very well potentially explore characters who never had "chances." Why couldn't you?

(On that level, I understand shipping as a means of developing fanfiction. I just don't read fanfic).

I didn't say they were hurting anyone... or that they couldn't have their fun. I don't care. If someone wants to ship these two, fine. I think it's gross and disturbing... but i can't stop them.

You realize someone could EASILY find Angel or Spike gross or disturbing as romantic partners, right? Angel is a rapist. Spike is an attempted rapist on screen and is probably a full on rapist off screen. I can somewhat accept Angel's soul as punishment (though part of what makes his story interesting is that he's constantly making up for what he ultimately cannot redeem himself for...if After the Fall tells us anything), but not Spike. Spike suffers no real repercussions for his actions and does not feel the intense emotional pain from an ensouling curse, as his ensouling was willing.

He had to cope with taking the soul in, but he (on the whole) does not really carry himself like someone who feels bad for his misdeeds. If anything, one of his climactic moments is being terrified by having genuine emotion again. A nice moment, but not the same thing. Spike receives no real punishments for being a rapist and murderer and, while achieving his soul again IS admirable and a good story, he doesn't really go through the punishments he REALLY deserves. Angel comes much closer to that (but also isn't that fit for Buffy, as season 3 quite gleefully played with).

So, yeah. Someone could easily construe Spike and Buffy being together as being sickening...especially since attraction DOES kick in pre-soul. You don't have room to judge.

Neither does the thread starter.

It's one thing to disagree with these people, but when the thread (and I know YOU didn't do this) is all about "LET'S COMPILE A LIST OF WHY THEY'RE WRONG, YEAH!" and is likewise filled with discussion that's equally nonsensical...maybe you guys are crossing the line between disagreeing with people and being douchebags.

Honestly, I'll comment on this all later when I'm not as tired... but something that stood out... "This is your interpertation. I just don't buy that even slightly" was pretty much a direct quote from you, which was my whole point in using it.
Okay, so this got off topic rather quickly... Why does every shipping conversation have to revert back to the same old Spuffy argument? Harlan Phoenix - I understand you were using Spuffy as an example of why you don't believe in shipping, and that's all very well and good, but I can't help but find it frustrating that a conversation about Biles has turned into a discussion about Spuffy...

Aren't these enough?!

LOL yes. so agreed. so many conversations always go back to the Spuffy debate...
Haha, most of the Buffy/Giles shippers I've seen ship it precisely because it's wrong. Not in spite of it. I'd take the shipping with a grain of salt, but that's just me lol. There's probably a few hardcore shippers out there, but hey...don't think about it too much. 😉 To each their own, anyway. 😛

I still don't think a Buffy and Giles ship is any more ridiculous than...the grand majority of shipping.

Question for ya, Harlan. To me, the relationships (and specifically, the nature of those relationships) formed in the show are a really important part of the narrative as a whole. I don't think ships are that much different from any other story/character arc. Why exactly do you think Buffy/Giles should be considered the same as any other ship in the verse? I didn't quite understand what you were saying before, since you were mostly talking about why you disagree with Spuffy as a ship. You can respond to me in PM if your answer gets too off-topic. 🙂

ITA with this last paragraph!
Reading this, I must say I do not understand how people can ship this at all? It is so often referenced that Giles is like a father to Buffy, it's also so often speculated amongst the fandom. We all talk about how much we love the fatherly love etc and how people could see anything other than that is beyond me. To start with Giles just feels too old for her, in the way he acts also. He doesn't understand her younger ways a lot of the time and gets irritated as a father would with her and the things she does--yet he loves her all the same.

I don't see any romantic attraction, to be honest the ship just creeps me out. They are perfect in the father/daughter relationship and I believe that was their purpose in the show. 😀

I didn't even know Biles shippers existed but I can only think it must be a silly Crack!Ship because no one with the intelligence to watch Buffy could honestly ship these two romantically.

Really. It's not like "Bangel" and "Spuffy" make any more sense.

Really? You really think a romantic relationship between buffy and giles is as likely as one between buffy and angel (which exists in canon) or buffy and spike (again, already exists).

I'm sorry but I don't understand.

---------- Post added at 08:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 AM ----------

It's weird how Buffy and a 200+ year old is ok, but Buffy and a 45 year old is gross.

In theory yes, but 2 things... 1) angel is only 200+ on a technicality, that he was born over 200 years ago... chronologically, he stopped aging at something like 20, or whenever he was turned and 2) the dynamic of the relationships is very very different... angel and buffy definitely have the sexual attraction component that buffy and giles very much do not.

at least as I see it.

Okay folks, what's with all this Spike/Buffy talk? I clicked on this thread expecting a lively discussion about Buffy/Giles, and instead my eyes get burned out with "Spuffy" nonsense 😉

In all seriousness though please let's all bring things back to the original topic and keep posts on-topic from now on. There's plenty of other threads to talk about Spuffy in if you feel the need, and if this one veers off-topic again it'll have to be closed. Thanks!

Harlan Phoenix, you described your own notes this way: "I explain my interpretations. . . .. I sat down and gave you the benefit of dissecting my view of Spike's character arc and why it's inconsistent with your views."

How is that different from what I did, that made you react with "douchebag?"

---------- Post added at 09:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:23 AM ----------

I thought of another one to add to my list, this morning: Buffy's shocked and incredulous reaction to "hearing" her mother admit to the police-car-hood incident with Giles. Clearly, Buffy did not see Giles in that light.

Honestly, I can see why some people could see how a Giles/Buffy relationship could have developed. I've actually posted about it before on the board. Personally, I'm turned off by it because I, too, think they're too much like a father and daughter, but the point is that they're not an actual father and daughter, so if Joss had wanted to take them in that direction, it wouldn't have been actual incest. I can see how a lot of fans would have felt that it was, but I do see both sides of the argument here. I've actually read a fanfic that takes place during Season 6 that shows how a Giles/Buffy pairing could have worked and it was actually very beautiful and a natural progression for the characters. Still, though, I'm glad the canon relationship is that of a father/daughter one.

Are you talking about Death Brings Clarity? I'm reading that (just started) because it has what I like best in fanfic - showing characters' further reactions to events that actually happened on the show and filling in gaps of stuff that happened off-screen (like the wake at the Summers home in this fic, with Cordelia and Wesley and Angel attending). I don't like that it's a B-G story, and I'll probably stop reading it once it gets too far away from filling in the gaps of stuff that actually happened, but if that's the fic you're talking about I do agree that it's being beautifully (and almost credibly) developed.

No, not that one... I can't remember where I read it; it was somewhere on LiveJournal, but that wasn't the title.
Hm, Buffy and Giles to me is just... wrong. I interpreted his role in her life as paternal from the get-go (it was such a set up for it too, young girl... no father figure... older male 'guardian').

I don't really understand Biles shipping for those reasons, once it crosses in to the 'family' territory in my mind and interpretations there can never be romance as a consequence. I find it a bit creepy actually, to think of Giles and Buffy as a pair... but to each his own. If someone wants to ship that way, I don't see the harm in it, I simply don't understand it 🙂

S8 spoilers
That reminds me of the whole Xander/Dawn thing. To a different degree, of course, but at some level I always thought of Xander/Dawn as family rather than romantic partners. When they got together, at first I was really grossed out and I liked their old relationship better.
I feel a lot better with it now because I like the way it's been written. I'm not sure if I would ever feel this way with Buffy/Giles, but it's a thought.

See, this double talk is what doesn't make sense to me.

I don't "disagree" with "Spuffy" as a ship. I don't know what that means and nobody will explain it to me. I see the notion of Buffy and Spike being in true love as nonsensical as Buffy and Giles being together. Because Buffy and Spike, as I see them in the series, do not come off as actually being a healthy couple. I see the implications of their relationship just as creepy as Buffy and Giles, just in different ways.

Let me dissect why your paragraph confuses me and literally does not make sense to me.

Question for ya, Harlan. To me, the relationships (and specifically, the nature of those relationships) formed in the show are a really important part of the narrative as a whole. I don't think ships are that much different from any other story/character arc.

See, I don't disagree with this. But the usage of the word "ship" doesn't make any sense to me. Why would you segregate romantic arcs as "ships" but everything is else is a character or story arc? On that token, what does it mean to "support" a ship?

Based on this thread and the above conversation, supporting a ship, to me, sounds like liking a couple because something is appealing about them reaching true love. And while someone obviously disagreed with me about this, here's the kicker:

They're not in love.

And honestly, it was REALLY aggravating to see people say "OH WOW MORE SPUFFY TALK DUR HUR" because...that's not what I'm getting at. At all. Nobody who said that read my posts (or they did, but just don't care. Which is even MORE aggravating).

Shipping and liking a romantic arc aren't the same thing. They CANNOT be. I've seen a post here explaining how sad this user was seeing Angel leaves Sunnydale because of "how good Buffy and Angel were together"...even though the entire point of their arc in season 3 was how they weren't.

Enjoying a romantic subplot isn't shipping. Shipping, in every instance I've ever seen is ignoring actual story to "support" a couple that doesn't exist regardless of their actual story arc. Which is why the fact Buffy and Giles being "canon" is a weak defense: most of these ships, by fan interpretation, actively spit in the face of the nuance of the source material.

Unless I'm wrong. Which I apparently am, but NOBODY WILL EXPLAIN WHY. Zobo made offhanded comments about "my definition" of shipping, but never told me the "correct" one, despite the fact I asked more than once (while also proving my definition as correct). YOU also don't answer, instead trying to figure out my definition and asking questions I already clarified in a post about Riley. I appreciate you trying to understand my viewpoint, but in doing so you're largely ignoring what I've already said multiple times and CONTINUE TO LEAVE ME IN THE DARK.

Why exactly do you think Buffy/Giles should be considered the same as any other ship in the verse?

See above.

I didn't quite understand what you were saying before, since you were mostly talking about why you disagree with Spuffy as a ship.

But that wasn't...

Mother of God.

I don't...

I don't know what the hell this means. I literally cannot understand what you mean. The way this terminology is applied is inconsistent and does not make any sense.

And nobody will explain it to me, because they seem to replace my words with the same shipper debates they've apparently read a million times. Or get mad I don't like their "ship" (which apparently isn't what I think it is, but then demonstrates itself as exactly what I said it is) and try to challenge my viewpoint while I'm asking to be cured of my ignorance.

I'm discussing an aspect of the show, and the fandom, in detail, with supporting evidence. Calling me a "douchebag" for that is rude.

Because you're reacting to a seven year old Livejournal post and being all, like, "MAN THIS IS SICK GUYS." It's the most needless way to bring up a group of people and bash them behind their backs. You're literally bashing shadows. To the point where you feel the need to construct a list of things that refute an old document that is about as relevant as you make it. Really. This document only matters as much as you complain about it and actively rally discussion about it. It exists entirely because of how much you hate it.

Also, see above. All "ships" are, on some level, illogical. They're really no different. You're just being mean about faceless people's harmless fun for no reason.

And that irritates me. I'm told I can't call you what I think this makes you, but I think dots can be connected.

Umm.. so how about that Biles eh?

I'm not a fan of it either as it comes across as slightly incestuous given the parental subtext of his interactions with Buffy, particularly in the first few seasons.

The first Biles shipper I ever met was on YouTube.

I was watching the video she made and I commented how lovely it is. The maker replied "Thank you. I know there aren't many Buffy/Giles shippers out there..". And I was like "Are you crazy? I love their relationship and so do most of the people. I mean, he was her father figure." And then she replied "Well, I ship the romantically."

O.O ----> me.
