Buffyverse Complete Reading Order Guide!

I also enjoyed the High School Years! And since Joss' name is on them as executive producer, I included them. I think The Origin leads nicely into them, and since Joss has said The Origin is "basically" canon, I went ahead and put all of them together at the very beginning because of chronological reasons. I'm pretty sure The Origin contradicts Tales of the Vampires about Jack the Ripper, thus I took it off my list for a while, but it's really a small remark that most readers will probably overlook it, and I do feel it's nice to have Buffy's origin thrown in, especially if you're reading The High School years.
I honestly think The Origin is really not that fun of a read, but to me, it's kind of important to get Buffy's origin story from somewhere, and I'm for damn sure not watching that movie ever again.

Into the Light is AWFUL, agreed! LOL! I did not want to include it in my listing, and I didn't for a long time, but then they introduced Dylan in Season 10, and I felt obligated. It's kind of the same situation as with Spike Asylum and Shadow Puppets, where characters that originated there pop up in confirmed canon later on. Obviously Dylan isn't as important as Beck and George, but I felt like I had to be fair and throw it on this list. That said, I will never read it again, ever, and I think it's totally fair to remove Into the Light completely too.[/quote]
Yea, for me Dylan isn't near important enough to put Into the Light on the list. It's too bad, really.

Yes!! They're so good, and you HAVE to read them to fully understand Beck and George. And the fact that all the characters pop up in the Spike series at the end only confirms that you HAVE to read them. They're canon, all but outright said so by Joss directly.
They might as well be. They add so much to Spike, as a character, that's it's impossible for me not to consider them canon.

I think it'd be fine to read First Night first in a reread, as it really interrupts the flow of the narrative (and adding in Spike: After the Fall with it only makes it worse), but for first time readers I say read it in publication order. Mainly because George's bits take place during the present time, and also because reading First Night first spoils the shock of Angel being human, Gunn being a vampire, and Illyria turning into Fred. I think it's most important for new readers to get the shock value as they were intended to when reading issue to issue.

Side note: I almost placed the Drusilla two parter somewhere around First Night, but since it starts off well BEFORE the first night in hell, it really doesn't fit there. It also contains visual spoilers for the final issues (like Connor getting killed), so I find it best to just read it in publication order.
Repling to the bolded statement: I KNOW, RIGHT?
Vol. 3 feels so removed from Vol. 1 that it kills the pacing. I'm going to reread it soon, and can't wait to see what it feels like to read First Night first.
Other than that, totally agree. I keep forgetting this is for a new reader.

Between the Epilogue and Only Human, I feel like some time has lapsed, so I placed a thing or two between them to space them out. I guess you could place Only Human after Drusilla, but Gunn and Illyria aren't present for Boys and Their Toys, but then are in Lorne: Music of the Spheres, so it makes most sense to me to have Only Human lead in Lorne, since it shows them returning to LA at the end.
That makes sense.

Again, my list is new reader based, so you can't read Riley before you know Angel is Twilight!
Oh, yea... 😳

With this issue, again, there's really no good place to read it on a first time read. During a reread, I would read it somewhere near the beginning of Season 8, but for new readers I say read it directly after the Twilight arc, but before Last Gleaming. That way you don't ruin the Angel reveal, but then immediately after you can kind of get some explanation for his actions before going into the final arc.
I prefer to read all the S8 one-shots and shorts in order of release, although I have read it with Willow and Riley at the beginning before.

The short ecomics are fun, and I should add them all in at some point! There's way more than just Carpe Noctem. My personal favorite is Always Darkest.
I kind of consider Carpe Noctem to be a full issue, seeing as it's 16 pages and was in Tales.

And yes, Willow pops up in the Spike series for a few issues, which is super important! I originally ended the IDW run with the Spike series, but you'll notice that Spike sees a show with Beck about slayers being evil and them killing vampires. This wasn't something introduced until Buffy season 8 #21, so logically Spike has to take place after that issue. I think it's best to just finish out the Predators and Prey arc before reading Spike though. Placing the Tales issue between them also helps add some perspective on the slayer/vampire situation before bringing in the slayer/vampire entertainment stuff in Spike. There's really nothing to mark Willow's appearance in the timeline besides her referencing Dawn being "hard to miss". This is obviously a joke about her being a giant, even though she's a centaur at that point if you read it in my order. I wave that away as centaurs being "hard to miss" as well. The only big continuity goof by reading Spike here is Illyria's hair color in the very beginning, but alas! I feel the slayer/vampire thing is way more important to place accurately than her hair color (which changes again anyways).
*Thumb's up!*
Honestly, I hadn't even noticed Illyria's hair change in the last 5+ years of reading this stuff! 😀

I love Billy, so I enjoy Love vs Life! I placed it last because Billy experiencing his vision signals the new magic coming into the world, which happens over in Buffy season 9, so I placed Love vs Life afterwards so readers would probably piece together what was happening. I also think having it last leads well into Buffy and co coming to Santa Monica to help. It also adds some space between seeing Vicky for the first time and her raising to the leader of the new vamps.
No! We agree on so much, but you like Billy? 😛

Thanks so much for all the comments!! I love talking about this haha.
Me too!

I'm curious... What do you think about the rest of IDW's Angel/Spike comics and the "Classic" Dark Horse stuff?

No! We agree on so much, but you like Billy? 😛

I have a soft spot for him! I loved his introduction by Jane Espenson, but wasn't a fan of the second part. I relate to his character a lot, and it really bothers me that he got tossed aside after all the controversial buildup around him. I hate how he was shoehorned into the Scooby Gang at one point, but it makes it even worse that they pushed him right back out, haha. His entire run in the comics was written extremely sloppily. But still, I wish he'd been used better, and I think he had a ton of potential. I would have loved to see Buffy mentor him throughout a season, but then they reintroduced Giles as a teen, and I feel like they couldn't have two teen boys in the title. I also find it odd that they ended his story with him getting that vision. Like, I feel like it should be expanded upon? Seems like a pretty big thing. I'm still hoping for a cameo of him somewhere, but I'm honestly not expecting to see him ever again at this point less Jane Espenson wants to write a miniseries about him. A miniseries which I'd kill for, mind you! I loved all of Billy's friends in Love vs Life too.

I'm curious... What do you think about the rest of IDW's Angel/Spike comics and the "Classic" Dark Horse stuff?

I honestly haven't read any of the classic Dark Horse stuff besides The Origin. There's a few I want to read at some point, mainly the ones you mentioned earlier, but I'm not in any hurry. As for the IDW comics post-After the Fall, most of it is awful. The only ones I really enjoyed are the ones I included in my reading list! Anything else was pretty hard to stomach, but same can be said for more recent canon stuff like Angel Season 11. (I spit on that title whenever I get the chance, sorry.)

I just can't disagree with you more, but I'm glad someone enjoyed Billy's inclusion! I honestly found him slightly offensive...😳 That said, I don't outright hate Billy's stories. They're enjoyable enough.
*cough*Love vs Life belongs before The Core for sure though*cough*

This is how I felt for a very long time. Like 5 years ago (maybe longer... god I'm getting old) I began collecting the single issues, and I finally got them all a few months ago (even a super beat-up #1, which I'm very proud of 😛 ). Mind you, it would have been laughably easier to just getting the seven Omnibi, but it was fun to read it in order of release, rather than chronological order. I'd recommend checking out a few storylines, but for the most part (especially the very beginning), it's just absolute garbage. Sometimes very fun garbage, but garbage nonetheless.

I pretty much agree with this. What about Barbary Coast, Angel vs. Frankenstein, Blood & Trenches, and everything that came before AtF? (just curious)

okay, guys, I am completely new to this whole comic thing. which one should I read first and why? I watched buffy and angel in tandem order and am not really interested in reading comics on things the seasons already covered. I'd like to start where the show left off and have an order from there. I would also enjoy background stories on spike, angel, and faith. I see good orders here but it seems like no one can really agree on the order and what to include. can anyone help me?

do the books cover all the same information because I have a really hard time reading the comics. i only have angel after the fall # 1 and 2

Well honestly, if you're looking for something streamlined and simple, it's not that hard to find. I would love to get into the nitty-gritty of it all and tell you all about the history, chronology, spinoffs, one-shots and etc, etc, but here's the most streamlined I can possibly make it. Hope this helps! And please feel free to ask me any questions.

1. Angel: After The Fall
This includes issue 1-17; Volumes 1-4; or the first two volumes of "Angel: Season 6," which includes some extra stories as well.

2. Buffy: Season 8
This includes issues 1-40; Volumes 1-8; the four beautiful library editions; or the newly released 2-volume omnibus.

3. Angel & Faith: Season 9

25 issues; 5 volumes; 3 library editions, the second of which includes a Spike mini-series.

4. Buffy: Season 9
25 issues; 5 volumes; 3 library editions, the second of which includes a Willow mini-series.

5. Angel & Faith: Season 10
25 issues; 5 volumes

6. Buffy: Season 10
30 issues; 6 volumes; and the first library edition was just announced.

7. Angel: Season 11
12 issues; 3 volumes

8. Buffy: Season 11
12 issues; 2 volumes

9. Buffy: Season 12- The Reckoning
Starting in June. Will apparently be the end of the "season" structure.

If you could get into the nitty-gritty of it and help me understand how I need to read all of it, I would super interested. It's just that every time I try to get an order or understand it people tell me a hundred different things and I get lost trying to figure out which source is most reliable and I worry I'm going to buy stuff all out of order and be super confused.

The list I gave you is 100% official, without question. Everyone agrees. The only thing you could change is the order in which you read Season 9, 10, and 11. For example, you could read Buffy before Angel, or you could alternate arcs, or you could even alternate single issues. I'll go on to tell you about the rest of the comics, but just to reiterate, this is a step-by-step guide to read the officially canon comics that take place after the shows:
1) If you want to continue on with Buffy, read Buffy: Season 8.
2) If you want to continue on from Angel, read Angel: After The Fall.
3) If you want to continue on from both shows, read After The Fall first, then Season 8.
4) After that, read Season 9. This includes Buffy, Angel & Faith, a Spike mini-series, and a Willow mini-series. It's up to you which order to read them in.
5) Season 10. This includes Buffy and Angel & Faith.
6) Season 11. Includes Buffy, Angel, and a Giles mini-series.
7. Season 12, the final season, begins in June.

But now, for the nitty-gritty (because you asked for it).

There are MANY Buffyverse comics out there. Some canonical (officially take place in the Buffyverse, approved by Whedon), non-canonical (any story that doesn't take place in the established universe), and questionably-canon (it's debatable whether these stories are "official" or not, for various reasons) comics. Some are just as good as episodes from the show, some are pure garbage fire, and some are just there. It's entirely up to you whether to read every single thing, only the officially canon stuff, or just the good stuff. I have a bit of time on my hands, so I'll try to give you a brief history of the comics, in the least amount of words possible.

The Early Years (1998-2004)
Dark Horse got the license to both Buffy and Angel during Season 3 of Buffy. This is now called the "Classic" series (60 issues). It's pretty much not good. It has it's moments of brilliance, but the stories are usually just severely watered-down monster-of-the-week plots, with really poor imitation-Whedon dialogue. During this time, Dark Horse also released a short-lived Angel series, and a whole bunch of spin-off graphic novels, mini-series, one-shots, and shorts. These include stories centered around character like Oz, Willow & Tara, Spike & Dru, and Giles. The best way to collect these is through the really convenient Omnibus series of trade paper-backs (or trades/TPB's; collections of single issues), which collect every single thing, in chronological order.
These are almost all decidedly non-canon. Personally, I like to throw a couple of these stories into my own, personal head-canon, but it's pretty easy to just write these off, seeing as none of them are particularly great. Nonetheless, here's a short list of some the highlights (in my opinion).
The Origin: This is the one story that might actually be canon. It was a 3-issue mini-series retelling the plot of the original movie, but with a better understanding of what Whedon was really trying to accomplish. It's fine. Imo, it's better than the movie, but it's really nothing special. The vampires look very strange.
Viva Las Buffy/Slayer, Interrupted/A Stake to the Heart: Near the end of the classic series, Dark Horse decided to go back in time and tell a sort of "Season 0," chronicling what happened to Buffy, Angel, and Giles inbetween the events of The Origin and Season 1. These are actually not bad. A Stake to the Heart is especially well done. You can get all of these (including The Origin) in the first Omnibus, but A Stake to the Heart is in the second volume. I personally consider all of these to be canon.
MacGuffins: The first Buffy comic ever. It's a cute short about Buffy taking care of the essentially the Cornish Pixies from Harry Potter.
Ring of Fire/Haunted/Long Night's Journey: Written by Doug Petrie, Jane Espenson, and Joss Whedon respectively (writers from the show). Some people consider them canonical (including me). Ring of Fire was a fun, epic graphic novel set in Season 2, guest-starring Kendra. Haunted takes place inbetween Season 3 and 4 and is about "the late mayor of Sunnydale returning as a wandering spirit, taking possession of available dead bodies in his quest to avenge his death." Long Night's Journey is an over-the-top Angel comic, set during his second season.

The Officially Canon Mini-Series
These three series came out while the show was airing as well.
Fray: Written by Whedon. This takes places in the far future, in a world where magic has ceased to exist, the poor have become poorer, and the rich have become richer. Turns out, there's still vampires (lurks). Also turns out, a new Slayer has been called, Melaka Fray. It's awesome and 100% canon. During Buffy: Season 8, she time travels and meets Fray. If you do end up reading this, you HAVE to read it before Buffy: Season 8.
Tales of the Slayers: A collection of shorts about various Slayers of the past.
Tales of the Vampires: ^Sort of the same deal, but about Vampires. Both are included in this beautiful "Tales" hardcover. These both take place before Season 1, but it really doesn't matter when you read them. There are a few stories in "Tales," however, that take place during Season 8, so don't read those until later.

IDW's Angel and Spike Comics (2005-2007)
After the series ended, Dark Horse held onto the Buffy ip, but IDW snatched up the rights to Angel and Spike. They began with a string of mini-series and one-shots (most aren't anything to write home about). The only thing you need to know about this "era" is: BRIAN LYNCH. This guy is probably the best writer that the Buffyverse has seen. He wrote the really well-received Spike: Asylum, and followed up with Spike: Shadow Puppets. Whedon apparently read them both and, because he liked them so much, decided to hire him for After The Fall as well. It's fairly common to see Buffy/Angel fans referring to his work as canon.
The best way to get everything from this era are the Angel Omnibus and Spike Omnibus.

Buffy: Season 8 (2007-2011)
In case you haven't figured it out by now, this is the official continuation of the series. It did extremely well for Dark Horse (at least at first), and went on to influence the comic book industry by showing that TV shows could find continued life in comic book form (and make money doing so). Season 8 also includes a Riley one-shot, a Willow one-shot, a couple Tales of the Vampires stories, and a few shorts.

IDW's After The Fall and Angel Continuation (2007-2011)
Not long after the enormous success of Season 8, Whedon approached IDW and Brian Lynch about doing a continuation of Angel as well. It ended up being the most profitable series IDW had ever produced, and is very, VERY good.
However, Whedon's involvement ended with issue 17 (volume 4). Everything else IDW produced during and after that are not officially canon, although I would argue that some might as well be. Angel went on for 44 issues and Illyria and Spike got some mini-series. Here's the only notable stories (although keep in mind that other people might add more than this).
Spike: After The Fall: this takes place before Angel: After The Fall, and is written by Brian Lynch. It's really good and most people consider it canon.
Spike: This is an 8-issue mini-series that finished out IDW's tenure in the Buffyverse. According to Whedon himself, this is officially canon. It pretty directly ties Spike into Buffy: Season 8. Personally, I consider Lynch's "Spike saga" (1. Asylum, 2. Shadow Puppets, 3. Spike: After The Fall, 4. Spike) to be canon, and a very important part of Spike's story. I think most fans hold these stories in high regard as well.
After The Fall: Epilogue: This takes place after After The Fall, but technically wasn't released until after the absolutely dreadful fifth volume. It's all written by Lynch again, and includes a Drusilla story and a fun Comic-Con story in which Spike and Angel switch bodies.

Season 9-11 (2011-Now)
So Dark Horse got the rights back to Angel. This manifested in an Angel & Faith series (technically titled Angel & Faith: Season 9) that ran alongside Buffy: Season 9. Season 9 also includes Willow and Spike mini-series. Most of this season is pretty bland, but Angel & Faith is fantastic and frequently cited as one of the best Buffyverse comics.
Season 10 came after that, but only included Angel & Faith and Buffy series.
Season 11 only contained short 12-issue Angel and Buffy series. A 'Giles' comics, cowritten by Whedon is coming out now.

Okay, I'm tired now, The only other thing I can tell you is to read through some of the threads on here where people ask the same questions you're asking. Hope this helped.

I should never have read this thread.

I thought I had all the Buffy comics ever printed. Now I know about Rogues Gallery, which I absolutely cannot find anywhere. I'd prefer to buy it but I can't even find scans, let alone an active sale.

I also had to get the extra two pages in the Haunted trade paperback because of this thread, but that only cost me a few bucks.

Besides Rogues Gallery I'm pretty sure I have everything, though. All the random one shots and Myspace shorts, all the FCBD stuff, all the classics, all the canon stuff, etc.

I want to collect as much of the Buffyverse comics as I can (cannon and otherwise), as much in book format as possible, then read the series in overall chronological order.

I’ve been trying to research for a couple hours now. But there are SO many conflicting lists between different reading orders and different collections, that it’s got my head spinning. I THINK I have a pretty accurate listing patched together now, but I’m not sure.

If anyone can help me figure out…
1- whether any of these completely overlap each other,
2- if there are any stories I’m missing,
3- if any of the volumes in each series are out of chronological order (I'll worry about switching off series once I own them),

…I’d really appreciate it!

Missing:
-Rogues Gallery, which you already mentioned. Only available in Previews magazine in 12 parts across the March 1999 to February 2000 issues. I've only managed to find 7 issues so far and they weren't cheap or easy to track down.

-Haunted (Prologue): A short 3 page prologue to the Buffy Classic story "Haunted" which didn't make it into the Buffy Omnibuses, despite the rest of the story being in. You can get the whole story together in a trade paperback pretty cheaply.

-Angel (Untitled): You can find it online in motion comic form here:
Angel :: Animations :: Dark Horse Comics

Or in physical form in Dark Horse Extra #36, 37, and 38. It's the only Angel story that didn't make it into an omnibus or paperback. I myself still can't find #38 anywhere, so good luck. At least you can read the story free, unlike Rogues Gallery which isn't anywhere online and has never been reprinted.

Thank you so much, famicommander! I really appreciate the help, and that was very clearly explained!

No problem. With regard to your reading order, I have mostly been using this:
Buffy viewing/reading order

I don't know who did all the work and I don't necessarily agree entirely with their definition of canon, but it's pretty damn useful and comprehensive.

Luckily for you I did a lot of this work myself not long ago. I'm actually right in the middle of reading or re-reading everything in order. I myself ended up with some overlap, though, because all the story listings you can find online about the omnibuses can be unclear. I ended up with the paperback of The Origin which is also included in Buffy Omnibus 1, I ended up with a copy of the Angel: Masks one shot and it turns out it's in Angel Omnibus volume 2, I ended up with a trade paperback of Angel: Spotlight even though it's in IDW Angel Omnibus 1. Plus I bought all of season 8 in floppy issues, then had to buy paperbacks of "Predators and Prey" and "Retreat" to get all the short stories and ecomics. And I have the paperbacks of Tales of the Slayers and Tales of the Vampires, plus the big hardcover.

So yeah, learn from my mistakes.

Also, if you can afford it buy new. My Angel: After the Fall volume 2 hardcover and my Angel: Season Six Volume 2 were bought used and looked in decent enough condition, but as I was reading them several pages came out and had to be sloppily taped or glued back in. All the ones I bought new have held up great, but the bindings on the IDW paperbacks don't seem to be as durable as the Dark Horse ones in general.

Wow! That really is detailed. (Now I’m trying to remember if I checked whether the spike & Dru comics were included in any of the books...)
I’m mostly going to ignore whether stuff is canon and just enjoy the ride; lol. Might look it up now and then out of curiosity, but not going to obsess over it. (I just want more fix!) I’m not sure yet EXACTLY how far I’ll go to stay in order. I kind of feel like I would try to mostly read each collection (Buffy, Angel, Spike, etc) one at a time, but at least switch off for the season stuff. It may be partly play be ear, since I can’t afford it all right away. I only have the first 4 Buffy Omnibuses at the moment (and a volume of Season 8 I plan to replace). Was playing with the idea of reading the High School Years and the Omnibuses of each series except for season 8, then working on stuff from there. Gotta prioritize what order to buy in.
As to condition, if I’m buying used, I try to go for Very Good or Like New unless there are just no other options anywhere. I don’t mind some scuffing, but I’d rather not have to hold it together while reading it, or be missing parts.
I did learn my own lesson about overlapping collections when I ordered the Lucifer comic volumes on Amazon. No clear descriptions had been given, and I got overlapping books from at least 4 versions. Lot of returning and reordering hassle. Now I’m doing a lot more research before this, which is even more confusing.

The girl I’ve been babysitting since she was less than a year old was finally allowed to watch Buffy with me now that she’s 13, so I rewatched the series to review first. So proud she’s gobbling it up; we’re doing the first 4 seasons, (plus Dracula and musical episodes, minus the weird sexually haunted frat house ep, muting Faith-as-Buffy teasing Spike speech), then saving the more emotional/sexual 5-7 for a bit. Currently halfway through season one of rewatching Angel to make sure it’s safe to watch with her when we run out of appropriate Buffy.
Of course, with all the rewatching, I’m back to craving more, and she loves to hear more about it, and the comics are the best option for those fixes.

All the Spike and Dru stories are in the Buffy Omnibuses.

Your list plus the stuff I mentioned above covers literally everything. Every Buffy, Angel, Spike, Fray, or Tales comic story ever published including one shots, ecomics, shorts, and mini series.

To my knowledge, at least.

Also, 13 to watch Buffy? I've been watching it since I was 7, when season 1 hit the airs. Of course, my mom loved it too so it was one of those things where you either sat down, shut up and watched it with her or you got the hell out of the living room.

Perfect; thank you again!

And yeah; I know a lot of people watched it younger. (Personally, I didn't start until I was 15 [Riley was just leaving on air], only because I was super wussy about scary movies when I was younger, and nobody explained that it wasn't just a horror show. LOVED it once I started. Was baffled that the only ep my friends said was scary was Hush, which I found funny... But most people I know directly had started around 10 or so.) With the girl I babysit, it's more an extenuating circumstances, play by ear kind of thing.
First, it was something I wanted to show her; her mom hadn't seen it. I developed PTSD and stopped working and didn't see her for a while when we might have considered it earlier. Then we started scheduling weekly visits. And got into Once Upon A Time. And Marvel. Etc. And it takes ages to get through stuff when it's 2-6 episodes a week. Then there's content.
The level of violence isn't even in question. That's nothing today. But her father died around when she was 7, and sometimes she doesn't want to see extremely sad stuff because it makes her think about it. The death of a character is usually something she wants advance warning of, and then sometimes even decides she doesn't feel up to watching.
Starting season 5, it's pretty heavily focused on Joyce's illness and death, and everyone coping with it. The Body episode is brutal, and they keep flashing back to it all season. Then various other characters keep dying off. (I can't even handle that episode well, myself. Characters crying always get me, and it's worse now. My own dad died a couple years ago. And my mom's name is Joyce...) It also gets very heavily fixated on the Buffy/Spike intense sex. More than just brief shots of rolling under sheets and kissing. More explicit comments. (And some of that might have gone overhead when she was little enough, but she's old enough to ask what something means if she doesn't get it, and her mom and I both try to give her honest explanations of things. Buffy has already led to my explaining a wide variety of terms. We don't need to overdo it. Lol)
At first I was just thinking we'd maybe just skip certain episodes, but that stuff was in so much of it that it wouldn't be any fun swiss-cheesing the show like that. So we figured this was the most satisfying way to do it. 4 seasons, plus episode one of season 5, and musical. (Dracula is a standalone ep, and I can just explain what led up to the musical episode; I hooked her on the show by showing her I Have A Theory, so we can't wait for that.)
It's not like we're hiding anything from her. I've described most of what happens; we've discussed (her, her mother, and I) what it is we want to wait on watching, and why. I bet we'll get back to the rest of it within a couple of years at most. And for now, it's looking like we could probably do at least some Angel. (That I'm fuzzier on, so remembering stuff as I go.)

Maybe she can look at the comics, too, for her own fix, if she has time between other reading. Haven't looked at them, myself, in ages, and only some, so barely remember bits and pieces of what I have read so far. But I can enjoy them, myself, at the very least!
Of course, I'm pretty OCD, and didn't want to start reading them until I finished watching, and then until I knew what order to read them in. Didn't even want to start buying til I knew that. So now I'm hoping to order the first batch in the next week. Thank you again! I was comparing so many lists!

If you want to read the comics in book form, I put together this visual guide to the collected editions in recommended reading order.

This only includes the canon comics, though (the ones with Joss's input or supervision). That means it doesn't include (most of) the Dark Horse comics pre-season 8, or the IDW comics after the end of "After the Fall."
In this you have the Tales: "One-shot comics published under the Tales of the Slayers and Tales of the Vampires brands, which were produced under Whedon's supervision and later collected into two trade paperbacks and then into an omnibus hardcover, Tales"
Do I need to buy the two trade paperbacks and the omnibus hardcover, to have the whole story? So that it has ALL Tales of the Slayers and ALL Tales of the Vampires? (I wanna collect as many as possible (if possible ALL) Buffyverse storys. So that's why I'm asking. I think that won't be my last question about this. I have a few Buffy comics (in german) but no Angel comics and the Buffy ones are far from complete... only season 8,9, 1 vol. of season 10 & 1 vol. of season 11 variant cover... But I want them all! Or at least as many as I can get. I don't need them in german. Because there are comics that only exist in english, but that's no problem.)

Every single Tales of the Vampires and Tales of the Slayers story is in the 'Tales' hardcover. Feel free to ask me anything else about Buffyverse comics! I'd love to help.

Thank you! You're so nice and helpful.
Buffy Omnibus 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 - Dark Horse (these are going to get you every single old Buffy comic ever printed, with the exception of one - Rogue's Gallery. The first one starts before Season 1, then jumps to Season 3, all the way up to Season 7. Not necessary canon with the new stuff, but doesn't really contradict much of the story so far. Not hardcover.)
Is in there the origin? (it has three volumes and tells the story of Joss' original script for the movie) So is in the Buffy Omnibuses the origin the whole story of all three volumes?
Feel free to ask me anything else about Buffyverse comics! I'd love to help.
sorry I knew I would have more questions (and there will still be more)

Yea, The Origin is included in the first Omnibus.

And it's only a three-issue mini-series. It's really short actually.
