Discussion of 6.07 "Once More, With Feeling" - Aired 11/6/01 (UPN-US)

That's because he WAS Dr Frankenfurter 😂

He played him on the Stage for many many years...I think (without getting the DVD extras out) Giles, Spike and Tara were the only ones with any real musical experience, Willow was petrified and couldn't hit a note hence her having very few parts ("I think this lines mostly filler" being one of the finest lines in the show) The rest had varying degrees of musical training to get them through the show.
I figured that Willow couldn't sing but didn't know Tara had any real musical experience. Wher was that from ?

If Willow didn't want to sing we could've always had another song where Tara is singing to her.

She sounds like an angel.

That was by Allyson’s request, I believe. She asked to not have much.

I think the other one that opted out was Michelle. Her parts are obviously dubbed in places and she doesn’t have a lot of material. Sarah also was really uneasy about it, but didn’t really have a choice.

You’re spot on about ASH and James. Both of them had plenty of experience. Anthony came from an expansive studio background and James actually made music, if I remember right. Can’t say much about Amber. I think she was a big surprise for cast and crew.

Anthony actually had a massive singing part in Repo! The Genetic Opera not too long after Buffy wrapped. The man can carry a tune so well and some of those deliveries are just incredible! 😳

I was under the impression that SMG wanted (assumed it would be) it to be dubbed, but in the end they got a voice coach?

Any excuse to get Giles singing was always a highlight in my eyes.

I will check out repo as that's not something I've seen and now I'm in a musical theme I thing now I'm going off to watch Dr Horrible again!

It’s surprisingly good, if really cheap looking. Worth a watch
Anthony was pretty good in that clip . Didn't know he had it in him . He a lot like Giles in that they both into singing .

( I think the other one that opted out was Michelle.) From what i remember she had more of singing them Allison so it
wasn't as obvious .

I had heard it was going to be dubbed but then SMG wanted to sing since it was going to be so emotionally important

I like to think in universe Willow had gotten so powerful that Sweet could barely get his hooks into her.

one thing though. DIdn't the I got the mustard out song show they didn't all have to be super emotional things?

I think it's on purpose (sorry if I'm repeating what other people have said) but it has repeatedly been shown, and said, that Buffy doesn't listen to Giles and that Willow doesn't listen to Tara (or Giles). OK, they do sometimes about some things of course, but Buffy has been pretty oblivious of Giles' state of mind going all the way back to at least Prophecy Girl - how do you get 'uncaring' from his quite obvious distress? Even if you don't know why he's acting weird how do you not notice and ask why? More recently, when Buffy asked him to deal with Dawn (S5), he says (I paraphrase) 'why would she listen to me you never have'. Tara (and Giles) have tried many times to talk to Willow and try to stop her doing magic. With Giles it goes back to Becoming 1 all the way up to Flooded, and Tara more recently (can't remember the exact episodes but there are many) has persistently talked to her about it. With both of them Willow has either played cute, avoided the question, outright lied, stolen books to avoid a confrontation, got defensive or got aggressive. She's never actually listened.

I hate that they both leave in the next episode but I can see why, especially for Tara. Tara is doing it to protect both her physical and mental health, Willow is frightening her. Giles, I think, is leaving for his own mental health and using the 'it's for Buffy' as an excuse (although he's not wrong just now is not the time). For him it's not just what's happened recently, it's the accumulation of losing so many people, and Buffy twice already. It's pretty much the first selfish thing they've ever done (barring that spell Tara did in Family and maybe other people can think of something for Giles, I dunno), and it is TERRIBLE timing, but I don't really blame either one of them (Tara, not at all, and Giles mostly not because he probably should have stayed, and knows it, but he can't).

this is an old post so I don't know if you'll respond.

They never gave her a reason to listen. Their warnings amounted to the boogeyman could get her, as though she hadn't been fighting boogeymen for six years

and I hate that people just go "barring that spell Tara did in Family" because to me it showed Tara had been lying to Willow for a year, and how far she was willing to go to maintain the lie. It should have destroyed her moral high ground and severely damaged the case she had the knowledge to know Willow was doing something dangerous

I like to think Tara learned from it. She wasn't using magic for it anymore. Still, she was written terribly in season 6, too dogmatic, and too easily fixable if the writers weren't focused on being edgy and tragic.

I love the idea that Willow was too powerful to made to sing much!
Randy and the Rippers. From before Randy separated from the rest of his band mates to pursue a solo career.

What kind of name would anyone give Giles & Spike singing with each other ?

Spiked and Randy? Trombones and Tea?
Spike was one to always keep you guessing . Plus he had a real pink sound to him when he sung . So suited him .

When Buffy has quite the entrance kicking the door down, I remember on my first watch as a kid (year five, young I know) and I imagined that was how I was going to enter the class after the summer holiday.
