Sure, but most of us complain about recycled storylines, which that surely would be. And I think Spike offering to be surrogate father is much more interesting. Remember him rocking the bug babies in the free comic? They weren't his either, but it was cool to see him acting paternal. The closest we got to that was Dawn, which was more big-brotherish.

What is now clear to me is how set up we were for this (particularly the mystery father) from the beginning. Flirting with Riley & Spike at the party, having a heart to heart with Andrew, her secret shared with Xander, the mysterious Heinrich. Plus the things she did at the party forgotten by a drunken haze.

That's why I'm pretty convinced that it won't be Angel. And that's why I said that Spike is more likely to be the father, because it's a little less recycling when it's Spike and not Angel. Again, I'm not saying it's Spike, I'm saying it's a better chance to be him and not Angel, out of the two.

And I didn't know about the bug babies, that's so sweet! As sweet as baby bugs can be... lol. He was also very paternal with Dru. He simply has it in him, it seems 🙂

Lol. I know, my first thought was 'Buffy is really slutty', you know in a funny way. Of course it's okay for a girl to be 'slutty' just like men. But in a funny way, when I think about how many guys could be the father of her baby... wow, that girl is going wild!

I don't think it's Angel either, I simply think too much time has elapsed.

I don't tend to think that Buffy is slutty, and I dont think the writers are trying to convey that either. I just think they purposely built up the mystery that way. Of course I don't think badly of Buffy for having an unplanned pregnancy, sleeping with a stranger, or having sex while drunk.

As far as the "vampires can't be fathers" rule goes, we have to remember that that rule applied when the seed was intact and magic still existed in the Buffyverse. With the seed gone, there seem to be new rules governing everything, so we can't say absolutely that vampires can't father children anymore. What we can say, however, is that, regardless of who Connor's actual mother was, Cordy, if things had been allowed to progress normally, would almost certainly have been his "Mommy." I have no problem at all envisioning Spike as Buffy's baby's "Daddy," regardless of who the father was. In fact, beyond his feelings for Buffy, Spike might see filling that role as being his duty, since he was responsible for another Slayer's child having to grow up as an orphan.

True on all counts- I love the idea of Spike caring for another child as a way to make amends for what he did to Robin's mother.

Oh, I wasn't saying that at all! I know it's not what you're trying to say, or me. It really really wasn't the writer's point, I was just pointing out the funny part in it. Buffy not knowing who the father is and the so many possibilities. That's like slutty sounding, but of course it's not really what this is. 🙂

I knew you weren't insinuating she was slutty, just thought I'd address the point since I've been thinking about it, too. :)
Did anyone notice that when Buffy's talking to the fairy, the First Slayer is talking to Buffy from Time of Your Life? What's that all about?

I'm not completely convinced that the key is simply the scythe. It might be, but it also might refer to both the scythe and to Dawn.

In the Slay the Critics section of the issue, Scott Allie says,
"Hello, and happy new year! And a special thanks to Karl Moline for jumping in for this special fill-in issue, with the echoes of Buffy Season 8 #5 but, oh, just a different outcome... I'm gonna leave that alone for now, and get on to your early mail for Season 9...".
8.5 was The Chain. Any thoughts on what he means about that? (Other than the obvious fact that the fairy is in both issues)

I love the art. There are parts where I would've preferred to have seen Jeanty's Buffy (like when she's looking at the pregnancy test), but overall I just love it, and I like a little change. That's nice. Willow looks beautiful. Buffy's hairstyles are gorgeous.

I can see the pregnancy hints from the very beginning of the issue. Moline draws her a bit more "endowed", and breast changes are some of the early signs of pregnancy. Plus the nausea, throwing up and feeling like she's being punched in the stomach. "But you're not a girl anymore". Then she walks back into the apartment with that white bag from the pharmacy. Honestly, I feel that this situation is so relatable to so many of us women. How many times have we taken a pregnancy test, terrified, hoping it's not positive! No? Just me then? 😀 (Then we get married and obsess about trying to get pregnant!)

OK, I just went back and read #1. It's clear that they were setting the guys up from the beginning.
-Her coffeehouse boss: "I told you last night not to come in. You know, after...".
-She doesn't remember what happened after flirting with Riley (reminder: they were alone, in his van). And yes, he's married and I believe he loves Sam. But that tie with Buffy is strong, he showed that in season 8- I don't think that was solely about friendship.
-Then the entire conversation with Xander.
-Then the day after while patrolling with Willow & Spike. Spike: "That's a bit harsh, after last night". Willow: "It was kinda mean--wait. What 'last night'?" Buffy: "Let's all not find out!".
-Then the mystery neighbor. Tumble: "The shut-in, remember? Calls the cops if someone snores. You go in his house for twenty minutes, drunk as a mouse, and today he sends us flowers".
-The only one I don't suspect is Andrew, as they didn't have an intimate conversation nor were they flirting. Yes they talked, and yes he was on her shoulder playing a game of chicken in the pool, but I didn't get intimate vibes from any of that.

Andrew makes some good points.

Damn, this is an interesting thread! Joss and Co. really know how to push our buttons, lol.

My thoughts on the baby's father, assuming vamps can have kids in this new 'verse

Spike: The only way I can see this as possible is if both Buffy and Spike were under a spell when they slept together. I absolutely don't believe that Spike and Buffy slept together. Too much water under that bridge! Spike is IN LOVE with Buffy - remember how he felt when she tried to use him for casual sex? You think he'd want to go through that again? No way. And we all know they're not dating. No way he's the father.

Angel: Agreed that the timeline doesn't match. But I agree with Kean that we shouldn't rule out anything at this point.

Xander: If this were true, and him and Buffy slept together behind Dawn's back, I would be very, very disappointed in both of them. To be honest, though? It seems likelier than Angel or Spike.

Random guy: This is my guess. Buffy probably slept with some guy - maybe that she met at work or at one of Dawn's college parties - and doesn't remember his name or who he was. This seems a lot more "real life" than any of the other options.

And what about her roommate? *shrug* maybe they're sleeping together? I know Buffy's been lonely.

In regards to Spike playing a big role in Buffy's life? You know what I think? I think they'll raise the baby together - even if it's not his. Would that make the Spuffies happy? Yes, I think it would.

Who wants to place bets? 😉

-So the Scythe is the key to getting magic back, and look like Willow is off now to restore it.

I'm hoping Dawn is also a part of that, with the use of the word 'key' and Buffy being told to 'unlock the key'. It seems like strange wording just for the Scythe...

- So who do you guys think the father is? Angel, her one night stand at the party, another boy, Xander or is it mystical baby?

I truly hope it is One Night Stand guy, whom I assume is Heinrich from 2D, like Moscow Watcher said. I like the Buffy-has-Mel-and-Harth-and-Heinrich-time-travels-to-the-future idea, as well.

OTOH, I would love if the baby was Andrew's. I may be alone in this boat, but it's the only non-heinrich option I can imagine that doesn't complicate things horribly. Angel? OMG the complications. Xander? Can we not break my Dawn/Xander heart? Spike? When and more importantly, how? Riley? Doubtful, as does Riley Finn seem like he would go the extramarital route?

- Maybe the pregnancy test gave a false positive. That sort of thing happens frequently, so maybe this whole this is just a little pregnancy scare that will once again make it clear to Buffy that her life isn't normal and may never be.

Actually, false positives are really uncommon. Presuming Buffy has not had a recently terminated pregnancy (by choice or nature) and she had just bought that test (which it looks as though she did), the chances of it being a false pos are incredibly low.

I just read it, so these are my knee-jerk reactions. I miss Cliff Richards' art. *emo tear*

See, the drunk Buffy thing and the person who sleeps with her while drunk is not exactly a problem, since all the people at the party were acting kinda weird. It wasn't just Buffy. They're either drunk or under a spell. Anyone could have slept with Buffy without Buffy knowing it. I wouldn't rule out anyone based on that.

But I agree about the ending point of it. I do too think it's a random guy, and Buffy and Spike will raise the baby together. It's good enough for me.

Is it possible for them to be under a spell with no more magic in the world?
brinkster130 agrees: Is it possible for them to be under a spell with no more magic in the world?

No. right. But you gotta admit, something weird was going on at that party. They all acted weird.

Scott Allie Talks Buffy's Big Changes

by Shaun Manning, Staff Writer

Buffy Summers, who has for years now fought back vampires and other forces of Hell, stared down an apocalypse or two, led an army of young Slayers and braved the horrors of a minimum-wage food service job, will soon confront a challenge unlike any she's faced before.

In "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9" #5, written by Andrew Chambliss with art by Karl Moline and executive produced by Joss Whedon, the First Slayer haunts Buffy's dreams, repeatedly telling her, "You are not the Slayer," demanding that she consider the significance of her broken scythe in a world without magic. These visions lead to a new quest for one of Buffy's closest allies, but in a shocking last-page reveal, readers discover that Buffy herself is in for perhaps the most challenging journey of all.

Yes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is pregnant.

Comic Book Resources spoke with Dark Horse editor Scott Allie for perspective on what this means for Buffy, her friends and her fans.

CBR News: Scott, something you mentioned in a recent CBR interview was the idea that the different eras of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" have been about the changes people experience at different stages of life -- high school, college/early 20s and now mid-twenties or early thirties. There's a moment in issue #5 where, after Buffy has been told a couple times, "You are not the Slayer," she's asked to think about what that means. Is there a sense in which this stage of Buffy's life -- even without the pregnancy -- is incompatible with what it has meant, at least historically, to be a Slayer?

Scott Allie: Those lines do connect with the pregnancy, yes. The big question she'll be wrestling with is how she can move forward in her life and still be the Slayer, now that everything for her and for the world has changed.

In talking through the arc of Season 9 with Joss, what was his (and your) thought behind introducing the pregnancy into Buffy's life now?

Buffy's trying to figure out how to take on the responsibilities of adulthood, of real life, in ways other than facing apocalypses and that sort of thing. She's had huge responsibilities on her shoulders before, and now she's facing different responsibilities. Mucking around serving coffee is part of the shock of facing real life, but she's wrestled with crappy, dead-end jobs before. Some readers expressed disappointment when they heard she was gonna be a waitress again, thinking that when we said we'd have her facing the challenges of adulthood, we were simply returning to old plotlines. But this has just been the set-up. She started in the coffee shop, familiar territory, and she'll push on from there. A San Francisco cafe is not the extent of what we're exploring with her new, grown-up life.

How does the pregnancy affect how Buffy sees herself and her role?

She'll be pondering that in upcoming issues. She has some great conversations with some key characters, including Spike, in "Buffy" #6. This has shifted her perspective instantly, of course. In "Buffy" #7, there's a fight that Spike insists she sit out of, and it does not sit well with her.

Buffy, at this point in Season 9, is estranged to various degrees from her friends and allies. Is this something likely to bring them back to her side in support or cause further divisions?

This will help bring her together with some of her nearest and dearest, for sure, but one of the other big developments in "Buffy" #5 was that Willow left the title for the time being. Not one or two issues. So the friendship that would probably deal best with this is on hold.

Aside from what the pregnancy means to Buffy as a character, what sort of challenges or opportunities does it present for Joss and the other creators from a storytelling standpoint?

Gotta leave that for the upcoming issues...

I think a lot of Buffy fans grew up with these characters, in the sense that Buffy, Willow, and Xander were in high school at or around the same time, then experienced these different life events together (though, on the fans' side, hopefully without as much mayhem). Do you see Buffy's pregnancy as giving fans who are now parents another way to relate to the character?

Absolutely. Fans anticipated this, which surprised us -- fans were seeing this coming from fairly early on in Season 9 -- and the reaction has not been altogether positive, shall we say. I think they need to see what we do with it, and see if it feels honest and relatable. Obviously that's our hope.

Fans are going to be wondering who the father is, and issue #1 put forth a few candidates. Does Buffy know, at this point?

Spoiler alert -- this will be one of the most upsetting aspects of the story, for some readers.
Buffy doesn't know.
Some readers will have a hard time with the idea that their hero could have gotten into this situation without knowing who the father is. She got black-out drunk in #1, and it turns out there are significant consequences. If the objection is that this couldn't or shouldn't happen to Buffy, it seems to me that that objection comes from the idea that there's something wrong with women to whom this does happen, that it is something beneath Buffy herself, and the fact that Joss and Sierra [Hahn, editor] and Andrew and I disagree with that is the reason why we think this is a viable storyline for Buffy.

We know, of course, that Nikki Wood, the Slayer immediately preceding Buffy, also had a child. In light of Buffy's pregnancy, will we be learning more of Nikki's story?

Next issue spends a lot of time with Nikki's son Robin, and flashing back extensively to Nikki herself. This was one of our earlier decisions about Season 9, at the writers' conference a year ago, that we'd bring Nikki and Robin into [the story] to help inform Buffy's perspective about motherhood. Having Nikki on the cover of the next issue confirmed readers' suspicion that Buffy would get pregnant, and that she would talk to Robin about it. We could have avoided putting Nikki on the cover, just like we could have avoided putting the hacked-off arm on the "Buffy" #8 cover, but we got tired of trying to keep all the most provocative stuff off covers, and decided that there were some surprises we had to keep for the insides, and some that were worth putting out there.

Anything else you can tell us about what's coming up for our girl?

She's making a career change, which I'm happy about. On Free Comic Book Day she gets out of San Francisco for a while. And Xander and Dawn's subplot will start picking up a bit before "Buffy" #10. Buffy's clearly having to redefine herself this season, and that's not an easy thing to do, but she has another twenty issues to do it. This story won't end where it began.

Oh, I hid my post on this completely in spoiler tags lol, I guess I didn't need to do that! :)
I wonder if we will see Buffy consider termination. I highly doubt that she would go through with it, and kind of doubt they'll even mention it, but it seems to be a natural thought (even if fleeting) for a woman in this situation.

So this pretty much rules out Angel as the father, in case anyone was seriously considering it.

I just told my mother about Buffy's pregnancy thing, and the first thing she said was: "Is it Spike's?" lol.

All Allie really said in that interview is that Buffy does not know. But what is it she does not know - whom she had sex with or if she had sex at all? Add here his coy phrasing of 'could have gotten' and you end up pretty much back at square 1 - Buffy can only think of one situation where she was sort of, maybe in a situation where she could have had sex. Meaning other than that party she cannot think of any time recently. (And we know for sure that she had sex - spectacular one - with someone in the past 4-5 months. ) For the pregnancy test to come out positive and her to have morning sickness it had to be at least a month - 4 -5 weeks at least. There has been three days non stop run ## 1-4. And then they want us to believe her roomies spent a month deciding to ask her to leave their apartment ? It appears from issue 5 to me that the entire sequence of it can fit into 2-3 days at most - with Tumble first seeing her at night throwing up , and then the next day they gathering courage to talk to her. The timelines just don't fit here. Same as the 4 month being the only reference in the text itself to the time that passed since Giles death - and the space sex by extension. So, I am still not convinced Angel as father is out of the question. They only switched the big mystery from 'is she' to 'when will she know', that s all.

But it's not exactly all we know. There are hints everywhere. Hints about each and every potential guy, it could be anyone because each guy had a connection to Buffy in reference to that pregnancy. We shouldn't just look at the timeframe, there are many other factors.

All Allie really said in that interview is that Buffy does not know.

He also said the baby was conceived when Buffy was black-out drunk in 9.01.

For the pregnancy test to come out positive and her to have morning sickness it had to be at least a month - 4 -5 weeks at least.

In real life that would be the case but in a story where the writers have been so sloppy with timelines and continuity it would be perfectly normal for Buffy to have morning sickness immediately.

If she were 4-5 months, she would surely know it by now, would most likely be showing, and even if she were still experiencing nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (some women have it their entire pregnancy) this wouldn't be her first time having it. And Allie's comment about the party seemed pretty significant. Still, they've already said that we don't know all the rules of the new magic-less world, so I guess anything's possible.

Plus, I'd still like to know what I missed "so entirely".

I reread 1-5 last night, but now I'm going to go read it again, because I feel obsessed about timelines LOL!
