Yes. It made clear logical sense that Spike would fall in love with the most powerful woman around. That's what Spike does... he is drawn to and falls in love with the strong women.. Cecily, Dru, Buffy... there's a pattern. Plus it made both character evolve and develop in interesting ways.
Not to mention the sex was really hot

I also think that it was the right decision. It made the story far more complicated and as a result very interesting.
I couldn't imagine the storyline that followed Season 5 without Spuffy. There would be something like a very, very big hole. Something would be missing.
And I couldn't think of anything that could fill that hole completely.

Even if you put aside their relationship in 6 and 7, it made for some VERY funny stuff in season 5. I <3 Spuffy so I'm 100% for it, all the way around.

I think it was a very good idea, as they needed Spike to do something interesting, or he'd just be a waste of a character and a space-filler. He was mostly just there for comic relief in season four and Buffy isn't the kind of show that sticks that title on main characters. No-one is just there and Spike was well on his way to just being a waste of screen time.
There was really no reason for him to stick around Sunnydale otherwise, so it made perfect sense. He was already attracted to Buffy and Spike likes woman who dominate him.

But we wouldn't have known any difference. Spike fell in love with Buffy in S5, but if that storyline was never picked up, then we wouldn't know we were missing anything. Maybe we'd be wondering if it would have been a good idea to hook up Spike and Buffy, like some of us now and wondering if it would have been a good idea to hook up Buffy and Xander, but there wouldn't be the hole you're talking about.
Plus, if there was no Spuffy, maybe we could have had Spander instead. Me and Sosa Lola would have been VERY happy, lol.
In saying that, though, I DO think it was the right decision for Spike to fall in love with Buffy...but I think it was WRONG for the writers to follow that with what happened in S6. I would have much preferred Spike to pine away, and then decide he was sick of being love's bitch and find a way to get the chip out. Going back to evil Spike, and bringing the REAL Big Bad back would have made that whole season for me.

That's my ideal S6. Dru comes back, Big Bad Spike comes back and they try and finish what they started in S2. Added bonus, no Troika!
So, SO agree with you. That's one of the things that will always bother me about the show, never seeing William the Bloody again. He was one of my all time favorite bad guys, and I always wanted the 'real' Spike back.

Yes, that's right of course. Without Spuffy we wouldn't have known how it was with Spuffy.
And now we don't know how it would have been without Spuffy. But I couldn't think of Season 6 without Spuffy.
Of course it's possible that the story without Spuffy would have been way better. But I couldn't think of anything that could replace that huge part of the storyline.
Maybe I would have liked the Spuffy-free story better.
What I was trying to say is that it's a big part of the story and I liked it and now knowing about Spuffy, I couldn't think of a replacement.

Have to admit that I was pretty much okay with how the relationship played out. I actually think Spike's obsession with Buffy was very realistic, given what we know of him. I won't go into too much detail about why I think that (wrong kinda thread for deep Spike analysis, lol) but I certainly wouldn't have written it any other way.

I think that Buffy and Spike were inevitable, from the first moment in "School Hard." There was so much passion between the two of them that they HAD to wind up either killing each other or being lovers. There was no room for any middle ground. (Of course, I was able to see that a lot more clearly that a lot of people, since I saw Season 6 before I ever saw Season 2). The fact that they also, eventually, fell in love was pure bonus of the finest kind.

Of course it was the right decision. Not only that, but it was a brilliant choice. It gave more depth to the character of Spike. I can't imagine how the series would have developed had he not fallen in love with Buffy. Can you imagine no FFL? No breaking down when Buffy died in "The Gift?" No "Rest in Peace?" No getting his soul back? I could go on.

But 'Spike' was the persona he created for himself, the person he wanted to be in the world, and that's the character we were introduced to, and that's the character I fell in love with. I fell out of love with him in S6 and 7, when they stripped him back to William in a Spike shell, and all that character development he created for himself was lost.
I definitely think there could have been SO many other, better ways to deal with Spike's love for Buffy, instead of turning him back into love's bitch.

I don't mind that he fell in love with Buffy, simply because after the huge mistake of chipping him, it gave the character something to do. I always thought he had a little attraction to Buffy from his first appearance anyway. I just hated that Buffy became sexually involved with him. Some people might have found it hot but it just showed how much Buffy had fallen and I didn't like it. To go from "Spike, the only chance you had with me was when I was unconscious" to using him as an escape from complete mental depression. Horrible.
Oh my god, that would have been such a brilliant s6 I get all happy just thinking about it (and further disappoined at what reality brought)
I voted no though, mostly because though I don't necessarily mind the concept of Spike being in love with Buffy by s5, I can't stand what it did to his character. (what followed was worse for other reasons but s5 Spike is just atrocious in my book and I can barely stand to watch some of his scenes)
