And also signifies why I believe a smaller number of companions works better with the Doctor, because it allows the audience to more deeply connect with the characters.

I think two companions can work, I understood the connection between the second doctor and Jamie, Victoria/Zoe. But three companions is pushing it.

I'd say Graham was the best companion from Jodie's era because some of the stuff with his cancer and grief over Grace was touching. But I don't feel much between him and The Doctor.

Yes, in a regular season, I think we could have seen more from Yaz and.... what's his name... but because Flux drove the story and it was going so fast, we really didn't get the time to get to know either character other than "Yaz pines for the Doctor".

Meanwhile I didn't watch the second special. I understand there was an uproar about it having a non white Isaac Newton, and honestly that is offensive. Not because I feel my white history is being attacked. I find it offensive as it basically is making out that the only interesting people from history were white! No noteworthy Indian historical figures we could have cast this guy as? I just finished a biography about a woman named Wang Zhenyi who was a scientist, decades ahead of her time in the 18th century, particularly in astronomy. She could be a great person for the Doctor to meet, but rather than look at someone like her, an actual, non white, non male figure that I, a complete bum found out about in like 2 seconds from google. Award winning RTD would rather lie about a white figure being black or non white or whatever? It's because other than provoking outrage among the anti SJW side of fandom, he has nothing left to get this tired crap into the papers. Heaven forbid they actually try and do DW. That's why I just have 0 interest in the current version anymore, and of course the Neil Patrick Harris being in it isn't likely to sway me back (the work crap is even more sickening with his inclusion.)

I watched Wild Blue Yonder again. It was still creepy the second time around. Not as creepy, but creepy.

This time, I also noticed that Donna's arm was on a monitor on the TARDIS console when the Doctor told her that her arm was too long.

The Isaac Newton scene was weird. The running mavity gag wasn't that funny, wonder if it's going to be tieing in with a big plot. Thought the rest of the episode was better. Trimming down to just Doctor and Donna worked. The monsters were nice and creepy. Good to see Wilf at the end as well.

The green screen and effects in general were quite ropey. Surprising given the budget but think it might be a whole industry issue.

I had a further thought on this...remember what The Doctor said about invoking superstition at the edge of the universe "where the walls are thin, and all things are possible" in Wild Blue Yonder? Are these changes a result of that? And I know the Newton scene was before they arrived at the edge but since when has time ever been that linear for TARDIS travellers?

Might it be used to explain the Timeless Child nonsense? In a way that doesn’t knock Davies’s friend but also please the fans, who have collectively agreed it’s not canon?

The Neil Patrick Harris Toymaker reminds me of Pennywise the clown.


They've announced that an animated version of The Celestial Toymaker is coming. I'm not a fan of the style of animation they've used but it's better than nothing because currently there's no full survived version of the story.

When did UNIT buy the Avengers Tower?

That is definitely going to need a rewatch. A bit confusing, especially as they were trying to recap old stuff about the Toymaker, because the episode doesn't make a lot of sense without knowing anything about him.

And that went a really unexpected way at the end.

I think the story needed a longer runtime or two episodes because I wanted to see a lot more of The Toymaker, although he could return at some point. But up until Ncuti arrived there was so much tension and threat and then it switched instantly to wholesomeness, with more time that transition could have been smoother.

I like how the bi-regeneration shakes things up and I think out of all the doctors it makes the most sense to do it with Tennant because he's the most human doctor and he didn't want to go last time he regenerated.

But I'm wondering if the 14th doctor will regenerate when he dies, meaning there would always be two doctors from now on? Or is it sort of like the activation of slayers- only one regeneration per incarnation of the doctor.

David isn't scheduled to come back, at least not for Ncuti's first two seasons so I think we are just going to follow the 15th doctor for a while.
But as for Ncuti- I'm enjoying that he's bringing a new sort of energy to the part, he doesn't feel like he's imitating any other doctor which is a relief.

Also I like how Mel has been adopted into the Noble family 😄

I thought that too, that it needed more run time because it seemed they were trying to cram a lot into the episode, including things that needed understanding in order to make sense of the whole thing. The only thing I knew about the Toymaker prior was that there was an old serial called The Celestial Toymaker. The episode would likely be easier to follow knowing how the old serial went. As is, they were explaining about this uber-powerful being from a different reality (realm?); it needed more coverage.

It does give them an option now to have a spinoff of Doctor Who. Called The Other Doctor Who.

The last episode of The Celestial Toymaker serial is available on BBC iPlayer, for those able to access it. I watched it a couple of days ago to remind myself about him.

I'm going to watch this special again before I decide if I really loved it or just liked it a lot...but my first thoughts are that I loved NPH, bi-generation(!), the return of UNIT (no Osgood, alas!), and the return of Mel. I liked that RTD has left the door open for The Master's return...who picked up the gold tooth? Also liking the potential for a multi-Doctor story that won't involve timey-wimey shenanigans, even though Russell reckons that David is too expensive to re-hire 😉

The Toymaker also said to The Doctor "I made a jigsaw out of your history. Did you like it?" which one could interpret as The Toymaker revealing that he fabricated the whole Timeless Child origin story to mess with The Doctor- because that history for The Doctor was like a jigsaw puzzle that was never solved.
