Doyle

I don't mean to sound like I don't have emotions, but I rarely cry. I remember telling myself when I was about seven or ten that I wouldn't ever cry, because I hated how it felt. How it made me feel. I didn't cry when Doyle died, because he died like a true hero. His life was a mess of debts and broken hearts, and he redeemed it all by saving people that barely even trusted him. Even after I learned that Glenn had died, I didn't cry. But I was rewatching this show, and I can't remember what episode, but Cordy and Angel were watchng a tape of Doyle and how the "Rats were low", and I seriously cried. Not like tears streamng from my swollen eyes, but deep down I felt really sad about Glenn.

I also find it really difficult to watch this episode now too.
Watched the episode where he dies today and i loved it. It is a tremendously well written episode and i can't see how you wouldn't be moved by it emotionally.

Credit has to be given to the writers because although Doyle only appeared in 9 episodes his death was so heroic that you felt a long standing member of the cast had died. Angel telling Doyle that you never know your own strength until your tested meant the death scene was set up perfectly and was always going to be moving.

Great acting from David and Glenn especially at the end where Angel calls out to Doyle. Great episode. Great character.

I'm with you to a point. Like, the last 5-10 minutes of the episode are pure genius, but the set up for it was rather boring.

Also, the guy above (posted it a while ago though) hates crying? Really, maybe I'm just weird but I love crying. I love when something can move you so much that it can actually evoke tears.

I'll agree with you in terms of saying the final part of the episode is much better than the rest of the episode but i wouldn't use the word boring. Before the end point the episode was still good, it was just that the ending was so much better, if that makes sense.

I very rarely find myself crying. If i wanted too i could possibly let the tears flow but i just don't sometimes feel comfortable doing it. an episode will make me emotional but i don't think you need to cry to know that an episode has touched you. Perhaps i should let the tears flow but as a man i suppose there is the stereotype which tells you that "you shouldn't be crying".

Oh man, I absolutely LOVE Joss when he makes me cry. Whether it be happy tears or sad tears. I was very much one of those people who thought 'oh god, it's a TV SHOW, WHY on earth are you crying?!' but Buffy and Angel were the first shows to ever bring me to tears and I've said since I began watching both shows that if Joss can make me cry, he's done his job.

And speaking of which, Doyle's death is the only death that leaves me sobbing. I've cried during Buffy's death, Angel's, Tara's, Wesley's, Fred's, etc... but I literally cry like a little girl during Doyle's.

Doyle was a really really great chracter, and if he were in it more (which unfortunatly he couldn't have been too much longer because of his tragic death in real life 🙁 ) he could have overtaken Angel for me....
Hero is an amazing episode, and the end is very sad, but at the same time you have to look at it and realise what Doyle has just done, and it brings a smile to my face just thinking about it...

I loved Francis Doyle and wanted the character to last at least one full season. There was so much that could have been done with him. And he had so much in common with Angel; both a mixture of human and demon, both born and raised in Ireland, both atoning for the deaths of others, both have previous relationships with a blond woman that they loved (and who they left because they had issues with their past and being part demon) that goes on to date another demon, both are fairly cheap, etc.

I've recently got WAY!! Too involved w/ the Buffyverse world and switched over to watch Angel after season 3 ended and Angel crossed over. At first I wasn't too impressed w/ this "Doyle" character but then I was grown to love him! I miss him!!! I wish he wasn't killed off only after 9 measly episodes. I feel that they could have developed his character more and I was excited to see him and Cordy finally together. But alas I guess he let his "demons" get the best of him and was fired..(according to web sites I've read). **sigh** I'm going to have to get used to Wesley back in town!

One thing that bugs me about Doyle's death in "Hero" is that it ought to be futile - he unplugged the machine; someone from the Scourge would just plug it back in, wouldn't they? The Scourge are still there, the oppressed half-demons are still there. It's a victory, but not much of one, really.

Of course I love that the series never let go of Doyle - that all the way to the final season he's a kind of totem - a symbol of 'The Mission'. It's a beautiful way to honour a character whose time on the show was so brief but so important.

And to think that Doyle is just a last-minute replacement for Whistler - Doyle is 100 times the character Whistler is.

I always loved this episode but it was sad. The first time I watched the series I knew Wesley would be back but I didnt thnk that meant Doyle would die. I just felt for him and Cordy it was overall a sad moment but so great because like alot said he died a hero.

He was only on for a few episodes but I got a feel for his character and when I talk about Angel I remember him he had an impact to me in the series.

So sad the actor passed away in real life it makes it more sad. 🙁

I just started watching Angel from the beginning for the first time. I was automatically drawn to Doyle. His death was extremely sad, but it helped show that heroes come in all shapes in sizes. You'd don't necessarily have to look like Superman. I think he redeemed himself in the end.

I feel Doyle also helped Cordelia grown even more open-minded as a person. I didn't used to like Cordy as much until I started watching her interaction with Doyle.

Oh gosh, I miss Doyle, when I watched the whole show over and went back to this ep I admit that I teared up a little at "To bad we'll never know" cause I honestly kept thinking he'd come back and we would get to know. I like to think he's with Cordy now, y'know with him being dead and her being all ascended, I like to pretend that it happened.

I liked Doyle a lot, and I think he and Cordelia really could have had a shot if he'd survived. Poor guy.

I may be in the minority on this, but Doyle's rather touching sacrifice aside, I think Hero was a pretty poor episode.

I started watching AtS from Season 2, so Doyle was this kind of spectral presence that I didn't understand. When I learned that he was a main member of the cast for only nine episodes, I thought, "how lame" - for no good reason, it prejudiced me against Doyle. But when I finally got to watching S1 (on DVD), I was amazed at how great a character he was. He really makes those first episodes special. He's truly missed.

I introduced my husband to the Buffyverse (His first time thru, my second... and a half). We're watching Buffy, Angel, Buffy, Angel... as God intended, you know. At the beginning of the Hero, we were discussing how much we like Doyle and how glad we are that he's a part of the show, and that he and Cordy are finally getting somewhere, etc etc etc. I'm a b-word, I know... because I knew what happened, so I was sortof helping to set up my husband's shock/disappointment by building up his excitement for Doyle before it happened: Bad. Idea. He was sooo furious when it happened that he proceeded to write a song entitled 'I Hate You, Joss Whedon' about taking our favorites before their time, and refused to watch Hush! After promising him he'd love it, he conceded, only to have predetermined hatred for the Hush episode, making it an overall unenjoyable experience for him. Then he boycotted Buffy/Angel for about 3 weeks. Needless to say, Doyle's death impacted him in a profound way. I was definitely unhappy with the event, but as I told him, there are far more upsetting things to come in the Buffyverse.

Omigosh, that is so funny! Your poor DH!
I'm on Angel rewatch for the first time and I've just finished with this episode. I cried like a baby. The episode is not that good on the plot, but we got to know Doyle. And I've loved him from the begining. When he died, I cried.. I mean, he was here only for 9 episodes 🙁 and when Angel and Cordy were watching his video, it was so sad, and I cracked on the end. "Am I done?".. Now I'm a Coyle fan. Great, another couple to cry about!

he was supposed to be the big bad of season 4, it was all set up from season 2, too bad the actor passed away, & they thew in Jasmine instead.
