I TOTALLY agree with everything you have said vicious and faiths5x5. I realize i stumbled upon this thread a little late, but i am very happy to see the amount of support there is for this issue. i am not gay myself, but i have a few friends who are and i just cant believe how people can be so closed minded about this. they're really no different from heterosexual people. it's the same as the difference between liking one member of the opposite sex and another member of the opposite sex. they're both still people. to vampyr, some of the things you have said i take personally very offensively knowing what some of my friends have gone through. im not christian myself and not very religious so I'm not going to get into the bible or anything, but i do want to say that it is definately NOT A CHOICE. its what they are. what are they supposed to do, deny that? pretend to be someone they're not? not fair. its also not fair to say that the way they live their life is any worse than a heterosexual lifestyle. gay people are still people no matter who they love and if they want to get married then they should be able to. if it contradicts religious beliefs, fine, it doesnt have to be a religious wedding. there are plenty of non-religious marriages and there is no reason that they shouldnt be allowed the same rights. its already hard enough what they go through as faiths5x5 mentioned in school and in a phobic society (as unfortunately many are), that they shouldnt have to deal with it in other aspects of their life as well. im lucky that in my school, it isnt as big an issue and we have clubs and lots of support for gay rights (because after all, they are no different, still human, still deserve rights). speaking as someone from massachusetts, i am very proud of the consideration for allowing gay marriage in my state (i am assuming thats still the latest, though im not usually up to date so someone please correct me if im wrong) and i hope that other states will do the same.

I was reading on those sites, Hitome showed. Did you know Coca-Cola financially supported the re-election of senator Santorum, who is the lead supporter of the anti-gay constitutional amendment in the Senate. He compared gay relationships to incest, adultery and bestiality, and said gay marriage was worse than the September 11 attacks.

I'll be able to drink that again.

Wait a second....my christian teacher said God knows what is going to happen in our lives and planned our lives...therefor making people haave feelings for the same sex. Its not a choice. i dont understand why people feel that it is acceptable to denie people the right to marry. Even in this case. Its just not fair.

Faith5x5 you rock !!!!!!!!! I already really like your name coz Im totally fond of the 5x5 phrase, but what you said... hello & wow !!!
I know it's not the good part of the board but I didn't say it in the welcome part so : Welcome in the board, I hope u'll enjoy it & you seem to be great, I liked what you said !!! :: jack ::

Marriage is defined by Christianity, because it is a christian practice.

Vampyr, nonsense, in all the different cultures of this world there is marriage, it's not a christian thing. Sure you can make it into one, by marrying in church in front of a priest, but that's not even the issue. We're talking about the legal state of marriage, it has nothing to do with any religion whatsoever.

Well said faiths5x5. I have to disagree with Vampyr on the fact that God wrote the Bible. Think of it this way, say 5 people go to watch a film and then a year later they all want to write a review on it. There not going to remember everything that was in that film, each of them is going to remember something different and the film is going to mean something different to each of them 5 different people. That is like the Bible. God did not write the Bible. Prophets and disciples wrote the Bible, they are not God. They interpreted his teachings.

That is just rediculous! How can he compare some persons love life to a terrorist attack that claimed thousands of lives? Man oh man, if I ever meet that guy...

I thought adultery was when married people cheat on their spouces? And I though incest was sex between family members? Being gay has almost nothing to do with that unless the person they want to be with is married or a family member.

ood that I don't drink Coca Cola...I totally agree with faiths5x5 and Powerful wicka..You can't choose who you are and ou certainly shouldn't be afaraid to be honest about yourself...I believe we all have the right to be happy...Gay people included Vampyr...

I totaly agree, no one should be sad or unhappy. Everyone has the right to be happy and if that means marrying and having a gay relationship....then so be it. know one should be able to tell you otherwise

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't give a rat's-ass whether being Gay is a sin. The bible has contradicted itself by saying that god loves all human beings but then condemns gays. Ergo, that's why I don't believe a bloody thing the bible says! Rant over

You got me thinking today. I read your post earlier this morning and I went to school with a sharp ear. All day I would listen and I heard people throwing around "faggit", "queer", "gay" like it was supposed to be an insult. People shouldn't have to think of themselves as a sin or an insult because of how they feel and who they like. Those words hurt people and those words make people ashaimed of who they are and makes them feel like they have to hide a part of themselves from the world. I don't think that's right. People shouldn't have to be ashaimed of who they are or who they like. God can bite me if he condemns gay people because of who they like, and if that's true then people should start rethinking their religions because obvious God doesn't have his head on straight. I don't mean to disrespect anyones religion, but that's how I feel.

Wow. First, I'm basically in favor of legally sactioning the relationship between any two people who love each other enough to want to make a lifetime, public commitment. I think stable new families can only strengthen a society. Let's face it - many, many straight people have not done much to uphold the so-called 'sanctity' of marriage. Marriage is currently, in most countries, both a religious and a civil institution. Whether you are married in a church, temple or mosque or at the town hall with nary a nod to God, the state will recognize your union and the benefits, privileges and responsibilities thereof. And while there are certainly many religions which villify homosexuality, some are accepting, even some Christian churches.

It's nice to see people being so respectful of differences in opinion. Vampyr, like many others I disagree with your position, but I completely support your right to hold those beliefs and to state them.

I don't believe sexual orientation is a choice, and I don't believe God dictated the Bible verbatim to some men he deemed to be worthy scribes. The Bible is a compilation of writings, the first half of which come from the Jewish tradition, and the rest of which was ultimately selected for inclusion by leaders in the Catholic church many years later. It is unfortunate that many people throughout history have used isolated texts from the Bible to justify hatefulness and even hateful acts. I was just reading yesterday about a Southern minister in the '70s who ran a daycare center and beat and bruised a 9 month old infant for being 'disobedient'. He felt he was in the right because the Bible endorses corporal punishment for children (spare the rod, etc.). Remember the Inquisition? Pogroms?

Also, let's remember that marriage as we know it has evolved over many years. We no longer think of marriage as an economic arrangement, which was it's primary function historically. Sentiment has very little to do with many marriages, even today.

Being from Massachusetts I am not proud of the nonsense going on in my legislature today. The unfortunate fact is that the proposed ammendment to the state constitution will likely be approved, legally challenged, overturned and eventually make it's way to the SJC, whose conservative make-up will probably deliver a US Constitutional ammendment against gay marriage.

i uh forgot when i...the uh...the lines in the bible. there are quite a few lines that church leader ppls have said to ignore, but the man one they still...it's still good to them..weird but...
the unconditional love and judgement always threw me, how could they preach that and then turn around and say hate gays, they're sinners, they're almost doing the same thing that was done to them years ago, smaller scale, not quite as bad but still....how hypocritical. to preach unconditional love, then turn around and say "well see what we meant, is unconditional for straight ppl. everyone else burns less they act straight get married and totally ignore that part of them" so very exclusionary and discriminating and damaging, but its prolly their major battle now, no gay marriage.
seperation of church and state is hard, i know it is, specially when the pledge (didya know that was rather recent? least the 1900's maybe late 1900's?) one nation united Under god.
any public office or swearing in, guess who's there, So help me god. i'm not saying he's bad, but church is very intergrated into life and gov't. its discrimatory atheists, ppl that call god something different, a lot of the religions have a lot of similarities its just the way they go bout it really....
church shouldn't meddle in gov't and gov't shouldn't in church...well...human sacrifice prolly isn't...but other than endangerment of ppl let em go. they allow cults, why not marriage? it gets them money doesn't it?
sanctity...church type thing again? im not sure but....adultery breaks it, a lot of things break it, and straight ppl do it a lot. not all,, and not all the time, but divorce rates and....i don't see how allowing same sex marriages, that the sanctity of marriage would be destroyed...
if you had enough money you could buy a church pardon for anything, once upon a time, an annulment, absolution...

tanks for the welcome frenchy....hope i hadn't offended anyone...i meant to mention somewhere, cuz i hate offending less i'm trying and then i fail but...i dun like insulting and offending...then again with this topic...i'm not against religion or anything, just how some ppl use it.
see now i'm even more glad i dun like soda....lot of ppl have tried using logic along that lines, but the sept 11 thing? mindblown. never did like the dude, i'm sure there are a few others that agree with him but...me, i can't fathom how one could ...(i uh forget words regularly...its a me thing...give me a sec an....) advocate would be an ok word, that...its...i dunno...i really dun't

that prolly will happen, cuz there are prolly more close minded ppl, or ppl that follow those ppl than there are open minded ppl...
everyone is entitled to their own opinion, i do quite agree with that, and i didn't mean to say one wasn't....sometimes i can understand why some ppl don't like gays. i'll never ever agree with them unless i'm brainwashed for a few years, and i hadn't before but...i can sorta see the standpoint. i just wish ppl would be more openminded, less judgemental, more accepting. and less brainwashed. its very hard to go against something you've been told your whole life. especially from a young age. if you're told from the get go that...say... monkeys live on mars, by someone you're supposed and do trust, someone that usually doesn't lie, someone you respect, chances are, you'll grow up believing it. and security is highly valued, and lots of ppl dun like change they like things the way they are.
a change like this, will have monumental conquences for quite a few ppl. big boat rocker.
some ppl started this cuz of fear and because the church wanted more control...william blake...the garden of love,,,against organized religion, in teh beginning its all peaceful, then he grows up, goes back to the garden, chapel, cool with him, likes god quite a bit, but gets there, locked, and "Thou Shalt Not" writ upon the door, gets him upset, turns to the meadow for comfort, graves. priests binding his joys and desires with thorns. he didn't want the church dictating his life. controlling it. unpopular view for the time but...he's not bad.

i don't think that the kids in my school, even know what the ramifications of what they're saying are. i really don't think they know what it feels like. its a very white, coal region religious old fashioned town. i'd say it had values, but 84% of kids admitted to getting drunk....lots of drugs and gambling, so ....a lot can prolly be attributed to ignorance. they simply put, don't know. or care. or they get off on it. or are afraid.
one of the scariest things, is the unknown, things you don't understand, and not knowing can be very scary so they turn and take it out on others, to try an feel better, to try and kill their feelings,
and im sure there are other reasons that i don't know of, and that i can't think of. some i can understand most i can't.
i have a very very hard time getting near anything that resembles hate. i can dislike and thats it. i don't understand hate. and i don't get hating someone for who they like or how they act...well...maybe the act....i can see hating a serial killer who killed your friend cuz...but thats a diff thing....thats a thing for me, i can't quite understand hate, and there's a lot of other things i don't get, but it doesn't bother me. sometimes it does but...most part, doesn't hurt me, close friends or family i'm usually gonna be ok with it....
its a very painful insult, even when its not directed at you. and it is unbelievably common. some ppl who are actually rather open minded and try an get their friends to be the same, still say ;oh my car was being gay today. wouldn't start.' its become so much a part of the school, it'll take so much to get it out, to overcome it, and here...i'm not holding out much hope.
one of my classmates....its hard trying to describe cuz...to all but 2 ppl's eyes we're good friends. we're not, cuz shes so very borderline phobe and i'm so very nearly gay(i'm bi, but i'm not interested in guys, attracted to them yea...enough that i can't say im gay in good conscience,...i really reallly hate lying, i can't so...). she'd hate me. the look of disgust on her face at the mention of it...its just...it kills me. so im nice, i dunno how to not, she's nice, the only prob is the me not being straight thing really. and i can't tell her that, without it getting all over the school, so i'm stuck. to say that i'm friends with her...is a stretch....
its prolly not that rare of a situation, keeping something like this from a supposed friend....it's very hard to smile at them when inside you know they'd hate you, be disgusted by you and you can't do a thing bout it. it eats at you, knowing that you're hiding something that will make someone hate you, and still being friendly with the person.

but like everyone's said, marriage isn't neccesarily (sp?) a religious affair, it doesn't need to be, cuz atheists would be outta luck then too. and theres this other arguement. that gay couples can't have kids, which you need to be able to do in a marriage....that gets me too....infertile couples aren't married to that logic. and i don't ever remember reading in the bible that marriage was Just between a man and a woman....i might be wrong, its been awhile since i looked at any of the bibles....not to keen on them or church anymore. i guess i just didn't like the idea i was gonna rot in hell just cuz i thought something....and this was before i realized i wasn't straight. that just made me like the church less....
a lot of countries still have a long way to go with discrimination. long road, lots of obstacles but maybe one day...

rambled on a bit again but....didn't mean to offend anyone...but...yea....

I realize I'm a little late, but wow faiths5x5, I do believe that was one of the most profound things said on this board (and that is saying a lot looking at some of these other posts!) :: party :

2 comments on that. on the first one, that is a very important point that i think a lot of people are forgetting. i mean, there are tons of things that are accepted today that would not have been many years ago, and like marriage, they have changed. for example, african american and women's rights. both took too long to happen, but they did. why should gay rights be different? Why shouldnt people be allowed certain rights because they like people of the same gender if woman are allowed rights (i do believe in womens rights, btw, im just trying to make a point). i mean, women are more different than men (again, not bad different) than gay people are from straight people. there is no difference that makes them anymore or any less. its like saying "you dont get rights because you dont like the same music as i do". well so what?

on your second point, i hadnt realized the situations was like that in massachusetts, and i must say that i am actually quite disappointed about that. i really hope it doesnt pass, you never know because massachusetts is a very liberal state, but lets just keep our fingers crossed that it doesnt.

the other thing i wanted to add to was words like "gay" being used as slang for "stupid" or as a negative adjective. its true--people just dont realize that that really offends people. even if its something like "oh, that math test was so gay." was the math test attracted to other math tests instead of a test of a different subject? probably not. its just pointless to use it in that way, just use a word that actually means what you're trying to say, and it really makes people feel bad. you never know who is listening and sometimes straight people forget to consider that it actually means something to some people.

This reminds me of a discussion we had in my biblical perspectives class last semester...sort of, it was about if gays could go to heaven or something. One of my friends was saying that God doesnt allow gays and they wont be able to go to heaven just because of that. He said that we, as Christians, need to show them the true light. I was really pissed at him for saying that because I disagree. Even if there is a heaven the bible says that we get to heaven through Jesus, and through faith not deeds. So I believe, regardless of your status, as long as you have faith in Jesus your fine. Plus I think people should be able to marry who they want, because you marry who you love, and if you love them they must be pretty awesome.
Also in my western civ class on monday, my teacher whose young and pretty laid back gave someone a detention for saying the word "gay" to describe notes. I agree with him in that it shouldnt be thrown around like that. We even looked up words like "fag" in the dictonary and it means like a bunch of sticks or something. Strange how a bunch of sticks could be described as a gay person.

That was excellent.* claps *

That was a good move by your teacher.

I think it is very unfair what gay people have to go through just to love someone, they get treated like their unworhty to be human. I think its disgusting that so many people are quick to judge them. And if they were'nt so arrogant and pig headed they would find out how great they are. They're lovely people and its not their fault if they happen like the same sex, they didnt chose to be gay. And despite that, what should it matter?

Yw Faiths5x5 & I don't think what you say is an offence or anything that kind.
I soooo agree with you about hate, I can't understand it, I can't even see what's the use for it, or where it comes from. Lol, that's why when I see some ppl around me fighting & being so mean with each other I think about going to live in the forest with animals, lol (even wrote a poem about that, lol)
Btw, I like your posts, you tell your mind & you got a great vision of things!

Michelle, could you tell him your mind? Coz I knew kind of the same situation with a guy last summer & I was like OMFG HOW CAN YOU SAY SUCH A THING!!!
But I really had a good reason, coz look at what the guy had told :
We were talking first about not being catholic, the man is such a believer, & I mean, I got absolutely no problem with that, except when you try to force me into it.
I usually love to have convo about religion, I mean, it's really an interesting topic, & I had really some good convos about it, but this man had no good argument, to convince me, & I think that I unsettled him & well, hello, it's not my fault if he can't explain me really why he believe. This guy never thought abot religion, it was more like he had been put into it since he was little & never really thought about it. So, all he had to tell me was that I was a lost sheep & that his job was to take my back to religion.
So now, coz you could think that I'm off the topic, we go on speaking & speaking, more like arguing actually, & I don't remember how he came to that, but he starts to speak about gay ppl.
& there, he went too far. He criticized gay ppl & gay pride, saying it was follish things & he dared to tells that gay ppl needed to be shutted in a place like the one jewish were during the WW2 !!!!!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!
Gosh, this guy, I wanted to struggle him for telling such things, & I really hope he didn't realized what he said, because if he meant it... I mean hello!!!!!!!!!! Concentration camps or the most awful thing ever, how can you say that.
Btw, after he told that I was so shocked that I just found nothing to tell & since we were in tent, I went out & sleep outside, in the pharmacy tent. What I don't understand is why the others who were with me didn't tell him anything!
Hmm, soz, it was long but I needed to tell it, lol

Wow. Don't you just love these guys? Religion should only influence personal decisions, not the lives of others. Maybe gays should not be allowed to be married in Christian ceremonies if that the position of the Church (but I am pretty sure that not all Christians oppose gay marriage), but they should definitely not be prevented from marrying under the law. The only real arguements that people without a religious bias make in opposition to gay marriage is that it will set a precedent for things such as bestiality, incest and polygamy. Firstly, these are no reason to forbid homosexual marriages. There are reasons for outlawing these other forms of marriages (bestiality, for example, is rape), but there is no differerence between gays and the rest of us. In a secular nation, there is no reason to make gay marriages illegal. It is amazing to me that this debate goes on when the only oppisition is from religious fanatics like Pat Robertson and this Santorum dude who call everyone who is not actively breeding in a heterosexual marriage "anti-family".

What does everyone think about gay adoption?

It would be interesting to see if anyone in favor of gay marriages is opposed to adoptions. Personally, I think that it is great whenever people are willing to care for children without feeling the need to make their own. I also find it ironic when people are opposed to gay adoptions because it will be unfair for the child to grow up in a "nontraditional home." The only reason that that is even an issue is because people make it one. Sorry, I tend to answer my own questions and argue with myself. 😛

By the way, Michelle, someone I know says that the term "fag" comes from the term for the bundles of wood used to burn gays at the stake in medeival times. I am not sure that I believe that, but maybe it's partially true.
