How come Michelle Blake and Holly Charleston won the Homecoming Queen crown in the "Homecoming" episode?

@NeonSlayer
They grew up with Cordelia so they've known her as popular their whole lives. Plus she is still aesthetically the most attractive girl in school.

Wasn't that a great reason for people not to vote Cordelia though? It's the "you can't sit with us" Mean Girls moment of Sunnydale high. Cordelia has fallen from popular grace, this might be her fellow students only way to get back at her for the bitca she's previously been.

And, meh, on the aesthetically most attractive. By this time she was looking more like a teacher than a student. Pretty only gets you so far.

I find myself Buffy wayyyy more attractive & sexy than Cordelia, in the episode Assembly required when Daryl has to choose between Cordy & Buffy, I'm like "pick Buffy pick Buffy!! " lol I never understood why Daryl chose Cordy, I have never find Cordy that attractive, she's beautiful but not too much IMO. Buffy has such amazing eyes.

I always just kind of assumed it was a joke and we weren't meant to think too deeply about it.
Cordelia's won stuff before - she was the May Queen and Queen of the Winter ball, but as Buffy points out on the white board: Xander is her weakness now. Cordy's later told by a boy that he can't be seen hanging with Xander Harris' cast off - she is losing massive points being with him.
Buffy starts campaigning late. Even her teachers don't know her name - she isn't really a part of the school (as Cordy points out). She was never going to win.

But mostly they lose because the cringe factor, if the pair of them had spent the episode learning a lesson and then sharing a crown, would be massive. It's Buffy - they go for the unexpected joke.

I find them both attractive but in different ways. I actually find Cordy more attractive as time goes on because of how she grows as a person. My personal taste leads a bit more towards Willow though😛

All very true, but why spoil the internet's fun?!😀

I don't know why everyone is acting like the other candidates weren't also trying to get votes. They were doing the same thing; putting up posters, talking to students, giving them desserts, etc.

I think Cordelia was easily one of the physically prettiest/hottest in the verse but I personally can't stand looking at her because I think Cordelia is a shit character and it makes me annoyed just looking at an episode still or gif.

Wow tell us how you really feel about Cordy, ha!
Suspension of disbelief. Actors are usually more attractive than the characters they play, so if the series claims Cordie is significantly more attractive than Willow and certainly not the same age as Jenny, you should just go with it. As long as they don't abuse that trust, of course. I mean, it's not as bad as the part Asian characters on Firefly.

Also, I think Cordy fits into the more stereotypical image of the sexy IT girl. Its partly a confidence thing too. Basically Willow's lack of confidence is how worst enemy at the start of the series. Its credit to Hannigan's performance that you believe her as a shy geek.

The Goths, emos, & nonconformists would like how she hangs out in cemeteries, committed arson, got expelled twice, has cool weapons, knows the shady element, turns down jocks, and just doesn't fit in.

Those groups wouldn't bother voting. It's totally not goth to be involved with a prom queen contest, the emos would be too busy cutting, and the nonconformists would just be elsewhere. 😛

No, I think the goth vote would break for Buffy, as they like the ironically religious act, hanging out with a witch, and Faith, whom I choose to believe hangs out on campus all the time and effortlesly moves between social groups. After all, isn't it more fun to pretend that nobody gets Buffy, everyone hates, fears or likes Cordelia just enough to prompt massive turnout.

I don't know about today, but back when I was in high school (and Buffy's age), goths didn't normally participate in such events.

I vaguely recall a newspaper editor wearing all black. But was Sunnydale's social scene ever broken down Mean Girls style? No. Just groups of attractive extra/tropes wandering around with no consistent tribal allegiance.

True! Forgot about the newspaper dude. He was a hipster before hipsters even existed!
