Mark Watches Buffy (and Angel) #2

5) Holland, Lilah, and Lindsey will all die by the end of season two, as will the Wolfram & Hart story line.

Just... dead wrong. I mean, wait till he gets to S5.

I've decided to rewatch season 5 of Buffy an onwards along with Mark's reviews. I really need to get seasons 1 and 2 of Angel. I only have 3, 4, and 5 on DVD.

OMG, comments on "Buffy vs Dracula" are priceless!

Dude, how can you not know Buffy's sister? Don't you remember that episode Angelus tried to kill her?

One thing I liked about season 4 compared to the first three is that Buffy's sister was only in two episodes. In the first three seasons, she was a pretty redundant character and Michelle Trachtenberg isn't a solid actress like Kristine Sutherland is. Take "Gingerbread," for instance. Both actresses were there to show Buffy's family turning on her. Sutherland's performance was nuanced and creepy, whereas the most positive thing one can say about Trachtenberg in that episode is that she crammed more syllables into "witch" than anyone else. There's no episode yet where Trachtenberg contributed anything that Joyce wasn't already bringing to the table, and I really hope that her appearance in this episode doesn't mean that she'll be dragging down Season 5 like she single-handedly brought down Season 3 (which would be damn near a perfect season without her character)
-Plus, her scene in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered was seriously tasteless on the writers' part.

Buffy's sister has been in the show since the first episode. Remember ?

OMG, off to read the review now.
I love how Mark, and certain members like enigmaticagentscully were so confused at the ending of the episode, and then all of the other members started teasing them as if Dawn's been there the entire show.

"Seriously. She HAS been in previous episodes. Sure, she wasn't a main character but how can you just... forget her? Were you not paying that much attention to the first few seasons? Were you too torn up about Jenny to remember anyone else?"

"Um. Don't you guys remember when Kralik knocked her out before kidnapping Joyce in Helpless??"

"IKR. What an asshole! Just knocks out little girls left and right!"

enigmaticagentscully: Mark, they're being mean!!!!!

Hahahaha! I love it! 😀

Now I'm excited. I've mostly been waiting for the end of the week to read all his reviews and so I read them all at once because I'm not AS interested as I was before. And, you know, well...I don't even but I digress.

All of a sudden season five rolls around and I start to realize a little why I haven't been paying so much attention since early season three. Season three is far from my favourite season and when it comes to season four, I was excited about the things I was excited about. But here we are, about to face some of my top seasons and I'm truly excited. In season five, I love EVERY episode, so I just can't wait. It's just...I love it. And the laugh I am getting over Mark having no idea what is up with Dawn is just fantastic. And the comments, just the funniest thing ever.

Living Dead Boy Do you still have the problem of not being able to view comments? Because I do. I can only see like 5 to 10 comments on the reviews now since S4...

...Ach, just realized it was because NoScript was blocking IntenseDebate. Which was never a problem before. /hits head/

Can't wait till the "Darla" review is up. Perfect not-quite-crossover is perfect. Ah, FFL. Your magic works on everybody. After all the anti-Spuffy comments from earlier episodes by first-timers, this is a nice change. ^^

From the comments:

Spike, in a nutshell.

Kind of never worked for me ... sorry. Not first tiome, not on rewatch/es. Love the sister ep Darla, but FFL simply makes my dislike of Spike firmly grounded.

"Darla" is up.

For some reason, this comment made me snigger uncontrollably.

Spike was apparently unaware that Angel had a soul in School Hard, which makes this scene here hilarious. Spike has no idea what he's doing this for, he's just having a great time.

I never actually thought about this, and now I can't stop laughing. "We have to go slaughter an entire camp of gypsies." "Okay."

And they're talking a lot about how Darla's human name should be Amanda/Mandy.

I find myself looking up Buffy wiki to remind myself what the episodes were about before I read his reviews so I understand fully what he is talking about 😛 Then I look ahead on the episode list and get giddy at how soon certain episodes are going to be reviewed.

I HOPE he brings up the fantastic opening to "The Gift". You know, where it shows clips from all 5 seasons and characters? Such a badass scene. Should have been one for Chosen.

Oh yeah, the Previously On was fantastic.
Into The Woods is up. The review has a big chunk on his traumatic experience with his first boyfriend, but you can skip that and the rest is pretty good. There's a whole party of Riley-hate, Xander-love (but not love for Xander's speech to Buffy, just his good intentions and Xanya), and Spike-is-a-creeper going on the comments.

I just checked his calendar, and "I Was Made To Love You" is on a Friday! That's going to be one tough weekend for the watchers, since "The Body" will be on a Monday!

Into the Woods review was a joy to read! So much insight from everybody. I really enjoyed it. It does hurt how everybody hates Riley. I understand why they feel this way, but I never realized how much I love Riley until I read this episode's review. I cringed and tossed my laptop aside so many times because I couldn't handle the Riley hate.

At least Xander gets lots of love, which I didn't expect. So many fans hated his speech and I expected lots of "Shut up, Xander!", which there was a lot of, don't get me wrong, but at least there was more love than hate. Xander's intentions were in the right place and that's what matters.

There was hate and amusement toward Spike's Nice Guy behavior in the episode. Exactly what I expected after reading so much hate for Xander in the High School years. Though Spike gets more amusement than Xander, perhaps because he's a soulless vampire. I do think Spike's unrequited love is written more sympathetically than Xander's in the early seasons.

I do think people love their Dracos in Leather Pants a bit too much.

That's the unfortunate reality of the Buffy fandom (and many other fandoms, mind you) - many fans forgive murder of red shirts much more easily than a character being a jerk to another character whom they like. And a character standing in the way of "your" ship is bound to be disliked whatever they do. That's how you get characters like Kennedy and Riley being hated so much despite never really doing much wrong, especially compared to the rest of the cast.

Does anybody else just skip to the comments? I like to see what other people have to say about the show, not what he has to say about himself. 😛
