New Buffy Movie Official Discussion Thread #3

I didn't say a Buffy movie would happen with the cast. I don't believe Gellar would ever commit, so I'm quite realistic as well. I wish there would be one, but I never said it'd actually be a reality. As far as a reboot, why does Buffy need a reboot? I say leave it alone if that's what they want to do. Buffy works because of Whedon in my opinion.

I didn't fall asleep during Star Trek '09...which is more than I can say for The Phantom Menace.

The point is that the 2009 Star Trek movie is a dumbed down version of Star Trek made for mass consumption. The original series, as well as TNG and DS9, had to rely on big ideas and good writing since they didn't have the money to make things shiny enough to grab people's attention.

The 2009 Star Trek movie on the other hand, had a budget that was greater than the combined budget of every episode in the original series combined. They used that cash to make big explosions and flashy special effects rather than write a good script. That's probably what's going to happen to a Buffy movie as well. It'll have a lot of pointless action and not a lot of plot.

I know what you meant. I was trying (and failing) at being funny and I just like taking jabs at The Phantom Menace when I can. (sw)

oh god, I get chills at just the thought of a "Buffy" movie. I can't see how it could ever be good in that format. It would probably just be cringe-worthy and slightly painful and nauseating to watch.
Please, spare us that.

If Joss is involved and the tv cast then all well and good. If they aren't involved just leave the Buffy concept alone.

To continue the Star Trek analogy. A lot of fans went ape-sh** when they made TNG, claiming it would destroy the legacy etc. What it actually did is introduce a new generation of people to the Star Trek brand. I personally do not like Star Trek TOS, but I love TNG, DS9 & Voyager (I'm purposely NOT including Enterprise in this argument for obvious reasons, it kind of makes a counter-argument to mine all on it's own) & I would not have had a chance to enjoy these shows had the TOS die-hards had they're way. I go back to my earlier plea for patience, proclaiming a movie that has not had one page of script written or one actor cast, a disaster, is a bit tight if you ask me.

But later Star Trek shows didn't actually try to reboot the series, they were continuations of the original story. Fray or a series about Faith would be an equivalent of Buffy the Next Generation. I don't think that a lot of people would complain about that. Also, Gene Roddenberry was involved in the creation of TNG.

As for people thinking that the movie will be bad, that's because there's a precedence for these things. Just look at all the remakes done within the recent memory, 99% of them are crap.

Fair point
Let's see... the main principals have no interest in returning, they have aged and have expressed concerns regarding such among other difficulties in this project.

I'm a fan as well, but I am also a realistic one.
Firefly has a better chance of returning to the small screen than the Buffy TV crew does on the big one.
Which is to say... virtually nil.

Sorry if you don't recognize that.
It's time to reinvent Buffy.

Wow. Harsh. I think everyone knows that there is no chance of the movie happening with the original cast. We all know they have moved on. There is however, a chance that Joss could be apart of a buffy movie (not the one in the early works) still, so if somebody has hopes, lets not tear down their dreams 😛

I don't want a movie that Joss or other people from the cast or crew are not apart of. I know that there will not be one with the cast, but I'm just saying that I never wanted a buffy movie without them, past, present or future. Period. Many of the recent remakes have sucked and I dont want Buffy to be added to the pile 🙁.

Harsh. You do realize that this thread is not us talking about a movie with the original crew right? They are in the early early early (did I mention early?) stages of making a new buffy movie, but not with the original cast or Joss.
I'm aware of what the plan is by the Kuzuis - new Buffy direction; no Joss Whedon.
I'm aware that Mr. Whedon will not be a part of it, nor will be the TV crew. I say that's a good thing. Let's get a fresh prespective. There's room for more than one vision here.

I think everyone knows that there is no chance of the movie happening with the original cast. We all know they have moved on. There is a chance that Joss could be apart of a buffy movie (not the one in the early works) still, so if somebody has hopes, lets not tear down their dreams k?
I debate your first point, even as you express those same hopes that you have just flatly denied.

I validate your second point wholeheartedly. They have indeed moved on. I wish them luck and much success.

I debate your last point as well.
Mr. Whedon (as sure as fresh manure stinks) will not be a party to a Kuzui Buffy movie. So much so that mocking effort was made in DVD commentaries to denounce said parties as simply receiving a paycheck without having any involvement. That resentment will not fade with a simple invitation in addition to the initital pre-tv Buffy movie response he had as well.

As for dreams; pie-in-the-sky dreams are nice and all, but try not to walk into the yawning pit in front of you while you loudly decry the sky is falling.

See above per your own quote "I think everyone knows that there is no chance of the movie happening with the original cast."

I happen to like the original Buffy movie and thought it was a hoot. I'd like to see where Buffy can go with a new direction. If "darker" is where they want to go, then I say "Do it! Do it! Do it!"

I'd ADORE one without all the overt 'shipping. Give me a Buffy who kicks ass, not wiggles it about trying to get it stuffed.
No wonder the Twilight books are so popular with (apparently) the very younger generation. Buffy was a role-model for that. Buffy the Vampire Layer indeed.

My liking of the character withstands that affront to my sensibilities regardless.

Sorry about the first part. I edited my post. I understand you were aware, I was confused about why you were talking about a movie with the original cast at first. My fault 🙂

Ok fine, ill give you the first point 😛
Agreed on the second.
I know he won't be. I guess I should have explained better. I meant that there is nothing holding him back like the actors -for example age- from helping out on any reboot that he gives the thumbs up. If he never wants to return buffy to a screen, then ok.
Well, they're not MY dreams, so I'll just be skipping over the pit, thanks. I was just trying to be cute about how the fans are so passionate about Joss.

See above per your own quote "I think everyone knows that there is no chance of the movie happening with the original cast."

In that same qoute I say "I know that there will not be one with the cast,". I think I made it clear there that even though I don't want a movie without the cast, I know one with the cast will never happen. I just don't want ANY movie, and thats just my opinion. If Joss helps out, then maybe, but I would like it to be about a different slayer. Just my opinion.

Wow. and ew.

No worries!
Sometimes I'm not replying only to a specific person, but also to a collective "you".

If he never wants to return buffy to a screen, then ok.
I'd look to the next Buffy comic run (the 20 issues scheduled) for that rendition.

I was just trying to be cute about how the fans are so passionate about Joss.
That was an instance of "collective" you.

See, you (personal) get it.
No, the TV crew won't be involved, and never will be. They've moved on to other things.

Mr. Whedon won't be involved due to bad blood and never will be. He's moved on to other things.

But despite these obvious things, there are some who would rather see nothing than something, or think that magic-fairy pixie dust will somehow make things turn out differently if they deny these things enough times.
Some even claim "disrespect" as if it is some religious heresy.
That's a pretty frickin' sad attitude for fandom.

I cited Star Trek 2009 earlier. Some are still pissed as hell that their Next Generation(s) -- yeah that's DS9 and all of that stuff -- is being left behind. Star Trek was smelling really, really ripe with geekery and navel-gazing and needed a new direction. The public agreed; with dollars and acclaim.

Those who still desire the old Trek can still get it in comics, novels and online gaming.
All niche markets, which serve their niche needs.

I was just over on IMDB reading a few of the comments on Fran Kuzui's page, they're all pretty much hatred. One is entitled "beep* you Fran" (lol), one was entitled "I hate you" (lol again) and one had this to say:

Mrs. Kuzui. I hope you get on these boards and read these posts.

Please: We beg you. Don't remake Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Just don't do it.

The only thing you've done in the past 20 years besides directing 'Buffy' was produce the terrible movie that is 'Orgazmo'.

Why make a movie that is targeted at only a specific group of people, when that group of people is going to hate it?!

it is a waste of time, effort, and money on your part. I hope no one picks this up. Don't you realize how good the television series was? How much everyone fell in love with it? Please don't ruin it for us.

Now the one of the problems I have with that is the last line, "please don't ruin it for us" (in reference to the show). I don't like that, not one bit. It sounds like those right-wing christian conservatives who bombard networks & affiliates with complaints if Christianty is questioned, ridiculed or lampooned on TV. I'm always forced to ask at those times; "is your faith so fragile that it can be shaken by comedy?" And so I'm forced to ask here; "are there really people out there who would see the TV show as devalued if a reimagined movie version is made?" If there are, then I just don't get that. I mean I am physically incapable of getting that. The movie can't go back in time & make the TV show crap. It can't reprogram our brains to make us love the show less. If your not down with it, just ignore it & it doesn't have to have any affect on you whatsoever (another thing I've often said to evangelicals). At the end of the day, we're talking about a TV show & a movie here, there's no need for protests & vitriol. If you are not interested in or offended by the new movie, just don't watch it. The show will always be the show we love.

Great points.
In some ways i agree but its the negative press reaction which would annoy me. Whether you like it or not this new movie will be spoken about in the same breath as the television show simply because it shares its name.

Also integrating new fans into the television show will be harder if the movie is terrible. Everyone on here wants to keep the Buffy concept alive and well in some shape or form. If the movie is terrible then people who've never seen the show probably won't bother after seeing the movie.

I'am not comfortable with it sharing the Buffy name. I think it could discredit all of the successes of the television show. If the Buffy concept ends with a terrible movie then that's how it will be remembered by many. The television series will be forgotten by everyone except the core fans of the show.

I'd have to disagree with that. I can't, off the top of my head, think of one instance where the scenario you describe has happened. Also, what if the movie's good? Are you even able to accept that as a possibility? If it were a rousing success then perhaps we'd get more fans to join the fandom.

We're not talking about some obscure TV show made 40 years ago, Buffy is still current. After the movie comes out (if it comes out) and if it sucks, google "Buffy" & I'm sure you'll find plenty of "core fans" ready to tell the world that the latest incarnation is not representative of the TV show. Remember, the TV show improved/rescued the turkey that was the original movie, reinventions do sometimes work.

If i'am honest i don't want the movie to be good. I can't see how it will be good without the characters and cast that made the show so enjoyable to watch.

😱 I still want it to be good. If the movie turns out to be good, it would bring new fans and the fandom would be energized! Even if I don't want a Buffy movie to happen, I cant help it being made. All we can do is hope its gonna rock, like Buffy the tv series! 🙂

Super childish to leave messages like the one listed a couple posts above, from imbd.

I actually would love a movie about Angel much more than BtVS. They can bring the whole cast back(David said he'd come back if it was in a movie format), and they could FINALLY do something with the whole Senior Partners story. You don't absolutely need Joss to be directing for that. You could get David Greenwalt and co 😛

Anyway it has probably no chance of happening, but this new Buffy movie sounds kinda lame to me. If you're gonna do a movie about a girl fightning vampires, and you don't plan to bring SMG or Joss, or any of the cast back... why call it Buffy? Just start something NEW god! They are just gonna use the name to get peoples to see a(probably) terrible movie.

But, oh well! I'll give it a shot I guess and wait until more news come out.

I think people are underestimating the damage a bad Buffy reboot could do to the franchise. Look at what happened to the Terminator franchise. The two crappy sequels pretty much tarnished the name of the series. Not to mention the fact that they ruined what could have been the greatest sci-fi series since the original Star Wars trilogy. The same thing happened to Alien and Predator.

There is also the possibility that a reboot will be very popular but still suck like Twilight, the Star Wars prequels, and Star Trek 2009. Then we'll end up with a new franchise that'll basically continually crap on Joss Whedon's legacy.

as much as i would like a Buffy film with the original cast, you have to remember that they are all older now.
they can't play teenagers anymore, it wouldn't be credible.
DB changed a lot and he doesn't look like Angel in season one, and this is a problem, since as a vampire he shouldn't age.

so the only way to use the old cast would be to make a film supposed to happen after season 7 of Buffy, or after the comics, and only the Buffy fans would understand the story.

i don't think it is possible to have a film with the original, but maybe they can find people who at least look a bit like them
