New Buffy Movie Official Discussion Thread #3

Anyway it has probably no chance of happening, but this new Buffy movie sounds kinda lame to me. If you're gonna do a movie about a girl fightning vampires, and you don't plan to bring SMG or Joss, or any of the cast back... why call it Buffy? Just start something NEW god! They are just gonna use the name to get peoples to see a(probably) terrible movie.

In that same vein, people who loved the original movie might have been saying 'if you're going to do a tv series about a girl fighting vampires, and you don't plan to bring in Swanson etc, why call it Buffy?' If people had demanded that they do something NEW after the movie BtVS might not have been what it is we know today.

I've grown kind of indifferent to the whole thing now. I was a bit like 'huh?' at first but I've moved past that. There is a possibility of it turning people off from show if it's not that great but at the same time I think that's an underestimation of people in general. If someone wants to watch Buffy then they're going to watch it, there's nothing to suggest otherwise really.

As for hoping that it's not good? Well that's a sure fire way to bring in the possibility of it 'ruining' the show.

And the comments being made towards Fran Kuzui anger me beyond belief. Seriously, it just makes the fandom look so disrespectful and as if we think we have some kind of possession over it. Sure the Kuzuis might be doing something people don't like but they're people too and they don't deserve to have abuse hurled at them.

I was going to mention your first popint earlier, but I figured I'd stump too many people with the logic. Nice post.

I know. I can understand thinking it won't be good but hoping it won't be doesn't make sense at all.

Agreed.

as much as i would like a Buffy film with the original cast, you have to remember that they are all older now.
they can't play teenagers anymore, it wouldn't be credible.
DB changed a lot and he doesn't look like Angel in season one, and this is a problem, since as a vampire he shouldn't age.

so the only way to use the old cast would be to make a film supposed to happen after season 7 of Buffy, or after the comics, and only the Buffy fans would understand the story.

i don't think it is possible to have a film with the original, but maybe they can find people who at least look a bit like them

I partly agree with you. They are older, and there for they look older. But, that's Hollywood. Some make-up and little camera play can do wonders. They probably wouldn't look as young as they did in the show, but they're not that much older. I mean, it would be really weird if they did Buffy movie 10 years from now with the originals cast. Look and Sex and the City, it ended in 2004 and they're making second movie with the original cast, because can you picture Carrie or Samantha in Megan Fox or Miley Cyrus. Some shows are just too epic to make them with some other cast. I say with original cast or they don't need to make a movie at all.

Well Samantha, Carrie and the rest aren't immortal vampires that aren't supposed to be aging...Right? 😛 If they had Angel Shanshu or something then that'd be one vamp character checked off...
Whatevs.

The difference being that the first movie was utter crap, while the TV show was a huge success. 😛

You see i wouldn't care if the actors looked too old for their characters. I would rather that then have someone new actor come in and play Spike for instance. I think most fans have an affinity with the cast that means they'd hate seeing other actors come into the Buffy fold.

I'd be interested to know how many people would prefer having all of the cast back and sacrificing the fact that they might look a bit older in contrast to bringing a new set of actors who they don't even know and have no appreciation for?

I suppose it comes down to how much you value the actors. If your like me then they are integral to the success of the show. It is one of the reasons why i haven't become submerged in the comics.

If i saw a new Buffy film without the tv show cast then i'd feel like the show had betrayed the cast that had served the show so well. That's why i wouldn't want it to do well.

When you consider that there are many cast members who would like to do a movie i wouldn't think it would be fair for someone else to come in and take their character away from them.

Actually I don't think any of them have said they want to do a movie. I've only heard about qoutes where they say they don't wish too. Most of them have moved on to new TV shows, have a family, or are working in a different area, like comics.

I saw the other day that Emma Caulfield was hoping for a Buffy movie. I saw in a thread that James Marsters had told someone on here that he'd love to play Spike again. David Boreanaz has said he is open to a film. Alyson Hannigan has said she'd only come back if Joss was involved, which leads me to believe she'd be happy to do a movie.

Her husband Alexis i'am convinced would love to reprise Wesley. Would Charisma pass up the opportunity to work with Joss again? I know they've had some arguments but i think she'd jump at the chance. To my knowledge she isn't that busy at the moment with other projects. Nick Brendon would be another who i am sure would agree. He seemed up for a musical at Paleyfest, why not a movie.

The only problem you'd potentially have i feel would be with SMG. She has just had a baby and i just get the impression that she wouldn't want to go back to Buffy. Joss could hopefully twist her arm though.

Then again Joss is busy with the Avengers at the moment. Nevertheless like i posted above, most of the actors i feel would agree to a film.

Maybe from interviews years ago, but that most of the actors have made it clear they're not keen on the idea. I have a few qoutes, some just from memory, but here they are:

James Marsters: "I don't want to do some lame line like, oh he's been drinking pig's blood right now so he's aging slowly or some stupid thing like that. It's now been seven years."

David: (after being asked if he would come back for a buffy movie) I don't think so. Maybe if it was smart or good, but I dont think its going to happen.--he goes on to talk about how it would be "re-circling" because there are so many vampire movies and tv shows out there right now.

SMG: "Citing her age as the stumbling block for reuniting with her old 'Scooby Gang', the 30-year-old actress told The Independent : "Oh, God, I'll be in a walker. And Buffy will be killing people with her cane."

Alyson has a baby and is on a tv show, so it is hard for me to believe that where she is in life now would give her time to do the movie, but I guess she gives off the vibe that she is up for it, sure. Anthony, to be frank, has gotten much too old for the part, no matter how creepishly sexy I find him! 😛 In 2006 he said he would be up for it, but that was four years ago. He is on Merlin now, and he is older. Nick, maybe because honestly his career has gone downhill since Buffy. He is looking pretty rough right now though. Charisma is dead....so that would not really work. Emma and Alexis as well.

It seems to me like because Buffy is important to us, we don't understand why its not to them. We will always love Buffy but we've got to let these poor people move on. I hate it when I see David roll his eyes when he gets another Buffy question. It hurts me that he does that, and it makes me mad because the interviewer is supposed to be asking him about Bones. Let's be realistic here people. I'm with superstar on this one. Its never going to happen, and most of the people who would be up for coming back are either too old, too busy or their characters are dead.

If it's creepy to find Anthony Head sexy then I'm creepy too!

I totally agree with your first sentence. They worked on the show, they're not all FANS like we are 😛

As for David rolling his eyes, I guess he gets tired of getting ask about that since he doesn't wanna be remembered for only one thing. It still kinda piss me off because he should be proud to have been part of something that still get talked about today.

I agree, both him and Sarah, and more and more Aly, refuses to talk about Buffy, this beautiful thing they've been apart of. I would be glad if someone remembered me like someone from Buffy or Angel cast 🙂

Being typecast is not a good thing. Just look at what happened to the casts of other cult shows and movies like Married... With Children, Star Trek, Seinfeld, Star Wars, etc.

There's also the fact that the fans only get to see the finished product. We don't really know the kind of work that went in to making it and we don't know about all the behind the scenes conflicts. Again, look at what happened with other shows. Star Trek is probably the best example. Everyone pretty much hated Shatner and Shatner himself didn't even know it until years later.

I think Emzzie's probably right with the majority of what she has said. As fans we do love the show more then the actors probably do. I imagine they have moved on and left Buffy behind them whilst the fans struggle and simply don't want to do that.

I'd also agree it is very unlikely the old cast will all get back together for a project. I still maintain that i think most of the cast would be up for doing a movie though. If Joss was involved and it was done right then out of loyalty to Joss i think that alone would get a lot of the cast to return.

Sadly though i can't see it happening because it has been so long since the television show ended. The actors have moved on and it would be so difficult to get them all to together again. Nevertheless that won't stop me talking and thinking how epic it would be if it did happen.

This might just be me talking as a fan of the show but i feel there is room for the show to tell one more story. A lot of things were left up in the air and most of all the fans would appreciate it so much.

That's why i am not happy about this 2012 Buffy film. As i said before it is unlikely the old cast will do another project, meaning the Buffy name will end with a movie that will probably be terrible. Doesn't sit right with me.

I don't care how aged the actors are, or if vamps don't age. Boreanz aged from season 1 of Buffy to the end of Angel quite a bit, but who cares? It's so easy to look past that. The stories are what matters, not a few extra wrinkles on their face.

Gellar has said never say never about a film, and jokingly said why the hell not when asked about a Buffy movie a couple years ago. Do I think a film would happen? Nah, not at this point, but I'm not so sure it's just because of the actors. As far as actors moving on, they move on in a sense to find new jobs and continue working. They aren't going to just sit around. Where are all the interviews at where they all say they'd never do a movie anyway? I'm not saying they don't exist, but I've never come across them.

I hear a lot of this and that, but then again I've heard silly rumors everywhere about a lot of behind the scenes Buffy antics that seem pretty untrue, and often there's no source. I saw one rumor that Whedon fired Amber because she was too fat, and then everyone in that thread started to believe it, and they'll pass down that information. It's so tabloid. It's as if we shape our own realities and stories to fit them to our own agendas and beliefs. Or what we want to believe.

I've already said it but I'd rather we get no movie at all if it's a reboot. I believe it would tarnish the show or really screw with non fans perceptions of Buffy. Buffy as a property doesn't need that image.

Well, I assume you are talking to me. We're not saying that the only reason a Buffy movie will never happen was because of the cast. We never said that. We were just talking about if they would want to come back. I did not make the qoutes from my above post up, and if you want me to pm you the links to those three interviews, I will. I did not just make them up as a rumor or something and am not trying to make up stories out of my personal belief. There is actual video of David saying it. Also, nobody said that anyone said they "never" want to do a movie. Just that they are not very keen on the idea, and its not high on their wishlist. Never say never right? The other parts were not from interviews and I think that I made clear they were just my personal opinions on why I doubt they would return. I even said that I thought Alyson and Nick would want to return and that Anthony said he wanted to, and what year he said so. As for the rest of them, their characters are dead anyways. There were only three people that I said did not seem very keen on returning. And I've read the interview you are talking about where she says Never say never and she also says "I have to be honest. That thought really scares me. Buffy was a movie and it didn't work because her story was longer than that. This was about a girl that you had to get to know and it took so long to figure out how to crack the ending so that people weren't upset. Of course I never say never, so I'm not saying no, but my fear would be to open something like that up again, to only end it again." I think its respectable that she never says never, because you never know where you will be in the future, but I think its pretty obvious she is not very keen on doing it. Just my opinion.

Emzzie, sorry, I wasn't talking about you, I wasn't even specifically talking about this board. I was really talking about over the years and many posts by other people that have said some strange things and said they read it somewhere and said it was true when it obviously wasn't. I'm not at all discrediting what you said. I think we are on the same page and I hope my post didn't get read the wrong way or you think I was attacking you. I wasn't at all. I'm curious to know what Gellar thinks is a good script. Grudge 2? The Return? Southland Tales? Scooby Doo?

oh ok! 🙂 I was thinking, really he thinks I'm making it up? Just because you asked where the interviews were and went on to talk about the people making stuff up out of their own wishes. I was thinking, ummmmm I'm not just pulling rainbows outta my butt here 😛 😉

SCOOBY DOO! haha, just kidding.
If they did a movie and brought her back, and it was good and brought new fans, her career would be re-vamped.

I think we should also remember that the actors have to say things like 'I'd love to do a movie', as it will keep fans happy but they know it wont be happening.

The only people I've believed when they said they want to keep working together is the cast of Firefly, watching behind the scenes stuff with them, you can see amazing chemistry.

I think what their doing is the only option they have, if they got the old cast it wouldn't be a reboot, it would be a continuation and would probably fail. By rebooting at least they are giving it a shot, It wont be Buffy, but part of the reason I liked Buffy was the concept behind that, Joss's characters made up most of the love, but it was the idea behind it that made it work, so there is a chance it could work.

I think most likely it will fail, because they will probably go down the Vampire/Slayer relationship because of all the vampire love at the moment, which will be to close to our Buffy but with other characters so will just be weird.

But I think it's ok to give it a chance, I don't think it would harm the series. In the terminator analogy used above they were part of a continuation not a reboot, this will be a different Buffy altogether so couldn't really wreck the old one.

Black Eye Guy, I personally think a Buffy movie would fail at the box office no matter what. Whether it's a continuation from the series or a reboot, it doesn't matter. I doubt the public could get past the name Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don't get the public sometimes. I will never understand how Transformers 2 made that much money. Or any at all. But to each their own.

The only real place that will be effected by this is fandom. What will pop is a new crop of fans of this reboot who will have no ties to the show and they will clash heavily with the show fans. There will be arguments over which is better, what's canon, who's the best Buffy etc etc.

It will be a madhouse, a madhouse.
