New Buffy Movie Official Discussion Thread #3

I'am sure reinventing Buffy could be a success if they used a new cast but i'am just saying that for me personally i wouldn't like it and i'd guess many others would be in the same boat as me. For people that have grown up with the show, grown close to characters and watched the whole journey unfold to see that all stripped away and have new people play characters that they adore well would they enjoy that?

Its like what someone said in another thread about Doctor Who. She doesn't enjoy the show anymore because David Tennant isn't the doctor anymore and Buffy fans would be in that position, only it could be the whole cast being different.

I also harbour a faint hope that the original cast could be brought back to finish the Buffy story off. The debate that they are too old isn't valid for me. If you could get everyone back i'd sacrifice them looking a bit older just to see them all together one more time. Who really cares if Spike and Angel look a bit older, that itself could be corrected through make up etc.

So in answer to your question its probably through selfish reasons that i don't want a recast. Plus i still think the actors who made the television show could do a movie and i think it would be more successful if a Buffy reinvention came about with them involved. I think the core fans of the show will be more excited and more likely to see the movie also, if it contains the actors they feel attached too.

I'd definitely prefer the original cast. No doubt about it. But is this just about Buffy, since it's so close to you, or do you think making Battlestar Galactica, V, Hulk, Spiderman, Batman etc more than once was the wrong thing to do? I don't mind you saying yes. I just want a straight answer that you can stand behind.

The Doctor Who connection is funny. Just made that connection in another thread. love her, hate her, don't care, or should have been a different Actress And if you're gonna use that argument you really should reconsider changing the way you word things. David Tennent is far from the first/original doctor. Not even in the new series. Then it's just about what you're used to or love the most and has nothing to do with being original or not. Not like there's something strange about holding your favourties high. I'd say most if not all people do that, including me. Just don't refer it to have anything to do about being the "original".

Well for me, no I would not want the original cast in a remake. My ideal, as of 2010, would be an animated film with the original cast's voice, picking up anywhere between 2004 and 2025. The reason I say that is because James and David would be laughable as 20-somethings at the moment, still handsome guys, but not kids. Also animated films are cheaper and faster to produce, in this genre especially, so 3-5 films in a few years wouldn't be a big jump.

My second choice would be an animated miniseries. To me, the Buffyverse isn't just "Buffy." Without Angel, Spike, Giles, etc. I don't have a ton of interest.

I think a big point that a lot of us are missing here is that the New Buffy Movie would not be akin to a Batman or Star Trek remake. The Kuzuis cannot legally use any of the characters from the series except for Buffy (not even Joyce Summers).

The Dark Knight used Bruce, yes, but imagine if they couldn't use Alfred, Lucius, the Joker, Gordon, or Harvey. That would be the exact case here.

I'm not against a Buffy remake myself, and would probably watch it, but I can say that I know for a fact that it won't be anything like the series unless they hire Whedon or are open to a lawsuit from him since Joyce, Angel, Xander, Willow, Giles, Spike, etc. are wholly owned by Whedon.

It is definately because Buffy is so close to me. I don't care about the other shows you mentioned because they don't affect me like Buffy does, i don't have the same feeling for those shows.

In regard to Doctor Who i can see what you are saying. I was just trying to say that one particular person in that thread was a fan of David Tennant, much like i am a fan of SMG, James Marsters, Nick Brendon etc. Meaning a massive reason we love the show is because of the actors.

Now David Tennant isn't in Doctor Who that person doesn't feel the same about the show and that's how i would feel if Buffy was remade without the original cast, because i feel attached to them. Hope that makes sense.

Question to Buffyverse: Don't you think that both David Boreanaz and James Marsters could be made to look younger? Is it just the age issue which makes you not want the original cast to be involved?

Involved in what?

A remake? No.

A continuation of the 'verse? Yes. Do I think technology could make them each look younger? Yes. Would a 2010 Studio ever sign off on a movie predicated on digitally enhancing every scene two of the lead actors appear in at the cost of millions of dollars per scene? Never, they'd never even consider a proposal involving that clause.

Can lighting and standard makeup make 41 year-old Boreanaz look like a 20-something? Nope.

But I think the core of your question was is the age issue the main reason for my preferences... Well, cost and actor availability are my main reasons.

David & James do great animated work when they're not shooting. This medium is faster, cheaper and easier. Instead of getting a dozen actors' schedules to intersect, each can do voice work at their own convenience.

I've seen great animated films produced for $6-$12million. De-aging James and David alone would cost more than that. There's also the fact that every cast member has expressed interest in doing Buffy in an animated medium except for SMG. To the contrary, the WB wanted to talk about producing a miniseries or DVD/TV Movie, and David said he would not be interested.

Is DB 41 already!? He looks SO good.
This is my own personal opinion but it wouldn't bother me if they looked too old. Technology could definately make them look younger, maybe not as young as Angel or Spike should be but i'd sacrifice that realism in order to have two fantastic actors play the characters that they themselves made so popular.

Thinking about someone else playing Spike is unthinkable for me. Again it comes down to my own personal view that the actors made the show so successful in the first place. Potential new fans of the show wouldn't care but for the old fans who've become emotionally attached to the show it wouldn't feel right to see someone else playing Angel or Spike.

Dan, seriously, you have to read through the thread. Recasting Angel and Spike isn't even in question here. As far as the live action Buffy Movie goes, Angel & Spike cannot appear in any form. The Kuzuis can only legally use the character of Buffy, every other character from the Buffyverse is registered under the Mutant Enemy banner, wholly owned by Joss Whedon (who is not involved).

I know they can't appear in this specific movie involving the Kuzuis. I'am more interested in speculating about a project which might involve Joss, hence Angel and Spike.

When it comes to the Buffy movie discussion i'am not just talking about the 2012 project but other potential projects in the future. I've already talked about my distain for the 2012 project.

Rumours about Sarah being involved in a project that is currently on hold could i assume include Angel and Spike because its not the film being doen by the Kuzuis.

Ever thought the new movie would work as a musical?

D.

Interesting idea but personally I really hope not.
I'm not a big fan of musicals and though I love "Once more with feeling" I don't think another Buffy-musical would be as powerful.

Partly because for another musical to work at least I feel that Joss would have to master mind the whole thing again. I wouldn't trust anyone else to make good 'buffy' songs.

But also I think it would be very hard to get the actors on board for a musical movie which would of course have to be longer and more complex than a musical episode of a tv-show. Because lets face it - the majority of them are not singers or dancers. Though they are very talented actors all of them only a handful seem to have the training for a full-lenght musical and I really don't think they would be interested in the format.

Just to have them back would be enough, i think a musical is less likely than a normal film project. Many of the actors didn't like the idea of doing a musical episode let alone a whole film.

Quick question, then: Who owns Buffy? I know the Kuzuis got credited on both series because of their original involvement with the movie, but as far as I know Season Eight doesn't have the Kuzuis' name on it anywhere. Does Buffy belong to Joss or the Kuzuis? Could Joss stop this movie on a copyright basis if he wanted to? Or could the Kuzuis have stopped the comics?

Put it this way: if I personally launched something using the name "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", who would sue me, Mutant Enemy or Kuzui Enterprises?

I'm pretty sure this has been covered before (perhaps more than once), but 20th Century Fox owns Buffy the Vampire Slayer "and all other prominently featured characters" (to quote the trademark notice at the front of the most recent Season Eight compilation). So, they should have final say.

oh my god.

"orgazmo" is hysterical! anyone who loves comic books should check it out. its cheesy and campy but it also "gets it right".

i guess its because i've been a devout comic book fan my whole life that i'm used to seeing television and movie adaptations constantly change source material to suit the needs of the moment that i don't fly off the handle when tv and movie producers mess up.

as a little kid it pained me to watch the incredible hulk on television because they got the main characters first name wrong. it's dr.bruce banner....not dr.david banner. towards the end of that show they tried "fixing" things by stating the hulks real name was david bruce banner...but the damage was done. (*it was even in the theme song for the hulks first cartoon..."doc bruce banner, belted by gamma rays, turned into the hulk, ain't he unglamorous..."...how could they mess that up???)

there are lots of comic book movie and tv adaptations out there...many more to follow.same with remake, sequals and spin offs. i've discovered that by going into these projects with an open mind i enjoy them much more. the teen titans cartoon was a lot of fun to follow but raven, starfire, beast boy and cyborg were all dramatically altered for the series. it still turned out to be fun.

so with that in mind i can totally handle another revisioning of the buffy the vampire slayer concept.

this is not to say i don't love the series...or don't miss it terribly. it's just another interpretation of the character and i for one would love to see the character grow into a full blown super hero archtype that will be as inspiring to future generations as it was to ours. if any character coming out of the turn of the millennium is going to do that shouldn't we want it to be buffy?

as it was stated before...many actors have played james bond, batman, superman and spider man. some with great success...others to their shame.the hard part is getting everything to line up in that specific way that really catches viewers.

personally i would love to see a remake of the original movie. the origin story told as it should have been.

look at it this way: the television series was born in the ashes of what everyone considers to be a cinematic fiasco. if there was no kristy swanson buffy...there would be no sarah michelle geller buffy.

A Buffy movie

I'm not sure if this has been discussed to death on here already, but I've been thinking lately about a Buffy movie (not talking about the original). Seems as if most if not all Whedon/Buffy fans think there should be one. Do you think it will happen? What do you think it will look like? If Joss et al would listen to you, what do you think the plot & characters should be?

For me, I'm not sure. I think a Buffy movie soon after the series ended would've been ideal. I think that the more time passes, the harder it will be, mostly due to the cast aging. Are all cast members on board if Joss decides to do a movie? Because I would want for all (surviving) characters to be involved. I don't even say they would have to be major parts, but at least cameos for all main characters. I would not like to see other actors playing our beloved characters, at least not right now. If in 20 or 30 years they wanted to reinvent it, that'd be a different story. So, my opinion is either leave it be or do it now.

It would need to be done really, really well: the financing, the cast, the plot, everything. Because a sub-par Buffy movie is worse than no Buffy movie at all. Of course, it's Joss Whedon we're talking about here. 🙂

Do you think Joss would do a movie with the season 8 plot, or would it be something different? I wouldn't mind a Fray movie at some point: I think those are awesome characters and a different take to the story. Of course that would solve casting issues.

Again, the more time passes, the more I think it's going to be really hard to do it right. The actors are all involved in different things, Joss has a lot on his plate as well.

Thoughts?

Sorry about my OOC post- I started a new thread and it was moved here. Should've checked this one first! I forgot all about this thread, mea culpa! 🙂

I think if they make Buffy without the original cast it will never be the success it could be. I'm not saying it'll be a flop. I'm sure people out there will love it, hell i may even like it. But I know every fan out there will agree we'd rather have it with the BUFFY CAST! not some new people, but what ev. We'll see what happens if they ever even come out with this buffy movie they've been talking about for ever.

Yeah, I just don't see it happening anytime soon. Although if SMG did indeed star in it, it could re-jump-start her career.

At this particular time, I think that just about the best thing that could be done as far as the Buffyverse is concerned would be to make a movie featuring a new Slayer, or maybe a pair of Slayers, possibly with a single member of the original cast (Xander, for instance, since Brandon would almost certainly need the employment the most) as her Watcher, with only mention of the other original stars, or maybe a disembodied voice over a speaker phone. That way, having a new cast wouldn't seem as much like the original stars were being kicked out, but rather passing the torch on to a new generation of fighters.

We have to face the fact that the original cast is never going to reprise their roles, and by this time, I think that that is the correct decision on their parts. Face it, they have all just gotten too old to play the parts of immortal vampires or the "girls" who will stand against the forces of darkness. The show is supposed to be about people who are facing tremendous danger and assuming tremendous responsibility at an age when most of their peers are attending high school proms and going steady for the first time. That's what makes the Slayer such a great character.

Wait a few more years, until the images of Buffy, Faith, Willow, Spike, and that other vampire whose name I never can remember, have faded a bit from the memories of the fans, and a new "Buffy" movie will be much easier to make and be accepted. Tarzan survived without Johnny Weismuller, Superman survived without Allen Kent, and James Bond survived without Sean Connery. The story of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a great one, and it can survive the years, but not if it has to be burdened with a bunch of middle aged actors who no longer have the looks or the moves to do it justice.

(And now if you all will excuse me now, I will go and put on my flack jacket, combat helmet, and Kevlar underwear and wait for the barrage of invective from outraged fans)

...and that other vampire whose name I never can remember...

Haha. That made me laugh. 😀

I think having a next generation thing with new characters would be interesting.

LOL, WA, no outrage from me! Unfortunately, I think that's probably the way it's going to be. I don't know why they didn't go ahead and do a movie closer to the time the shows ended. And I'm LOL at Nicholas Brendan needing employment. 🙂 I think I said this before, but I'd love to see a movie about Fray. Although I do think we probably have enough futuristic vampire movies.

Do you notice I'm ignoring the other vampire thing? 😉
