I've watched both the swedish movie and tv version and read the book(s). It's been a few years though. If memory serves I prefer the swedish one. One possible positive thing for the american version is that it's easier to watch. The original felt a bit slow paced at times but also more brutal. One very bad detail to me is that once we're introduced to the "villain" the whole look screams "It's me! I'm the bad guy." The question is though if I'd felt the same way about it if I didn't know about it in advance.

I get why some would prefer this version. Not as heavy and disturbing and lets face it, watching a movie that you absolutely need subtitles to understand demands more of you.

I just watched "Killing Me Softly" with Heather Graham and Ralph Fiennes 6/10.
It wasn't bad, it was just utterly predictable and I really felt like it wasn't one of Graham's better parts, she wasn't very convincing and the plot moved a bit... well, let's just say she was awfully quick to believe that her husband could be a murderer.

He. I watched the first movie to see what all the fuzz was about. Then I read all the books before watching the other two movies. So when I watched the first movie I had no idea who was gonna be the villain and I certainly didn't notice it straight away. I just got the vibe in the american movie.

Not read the books yet either. Have seen the original Swedish triolgy and bar the second part really liked it. I guess I would watch the American one just because Fincher is directing, but am not convinced that it would be as good.

Inherent Vice (2014) 8/10

Another bold and distinctive film from the great Paul Thomas Anderson. Watching this drug ingulfed and surreal world as a viewer I myself felt drawn into the crazed and disjointed world. The film is unpredictable, funny, and oddly dark in places. I liked how the Phoenix character was like a doppy 'Columbo' like detective who stumbled onto clues as the story unreaveled. Some of the best scenes were involving him and the more straight laiced, conserative 'Detective Big Foot' played brilliantly by Josh Brolin. The music was again excellent, the visual style of the film engrossing and strange. It didn't need to be 2 and half hours long is my only problem with it. I don't know where I would rank it with his other great films, but I did have a good time. And oh yes Serena Scott Thomas of Buffy fame was entertaining in her small part!

The Firm (1993) 7/10

A nicely paced, and engrossing thriller, with strong direction and an excellent supporting cast. On the other Tom Cruise simply plays the Tom Cruise which at least in the first half of the film is a very boring. It is a little over long, and complex, but a cracking watch none the less.

A double feature, "Sahara" (1943) with Bogart and the remake, "Sahara," (1995) with Jim Belushi, just to compare the two. The newer version came off pretty well as compared to the classic, with a slightly different ending and a little profanity thrown in. One mistake that I saw in the remake, which very few people besides me would have noticed, is that the package of Lucky Strike cigarettes that Belushi has is the packages is white with a red logo, whereas at that time they were dark green with a red logo. The only reason that I spotted that is that I have a pack of Luckies that my father saved when they changed colors.

The "Sahara" I liked was the one released in 2005 based on Clive Cussler's novel, starring Penelope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey. Action comedy movies are rare and very welcome!

Saw Horns. Read the book by Stephen King Jr, it was a very good book. The movie was.. acceptable. Not bad but not as good as the book. 2.5/5 stars. The movie just seemed to need a little slower pacing and more world building, like the book. However the movie is already at 2 hours so I am sure that would be out of the question. Radcliffe was good in the role, I could have watched it for another 30 minutes.

Wild (2014) 8/10

An even better effort than the directors last film Dallas Buyers Club. This tells a very conventional true life story but in a very non-conventional way. The Witherspoon is a well rounded vivid character, and part of the brilliance of her performance is that she has to play both the younger version and present version of the character, which is key to showing us the devolepment of her into a grown up, and well as why her trip is so personally. She is convincing in both protrayals, and it makes for a richly deverse, and powerful experiences, with a subtle supporting performance by Laura Dern, and a effective use of atmosphere and visuals. Its a very moving, but honest film, in someways a very feminst one too.

If you haven't already you should watch the directors first film Switchblade Romance, now thats a proper horror film, even if you might find the twist a bit off.

Didn't know it was the same director, that is quite the change in genre, from French extremity horror to English comedy horror. But if you want to see a proper horror, I also suggest Martyrs and Inside, both also French, and very very graphic.

I'm just surprised at the people that call Horns horror. I would classify it more as fantasy mystery than horror. There is very little horrific things in the movie. Maybe that's why ratings weren't that good- people were expecting it to be a horror movie instead of what it was.

He also did a good job with the remake of the Hills Have Eyes. Since then he has struggled to find good scripts. Will look out for those movies you mentioned.

Catching Fire HG 7/10

Found it a little slow but not as slow as the first movie. It was enjoyable and I am looking forward to the next one. However, I have seen better movies imo.

Hanna (2011) 7/10

First time I have seen this since the cinema and it still holds up. Joe Wrights most stylish and bonkers, but fun films. Its a smart piece of genre filmmaking with some fine performances also.

Campy movie, but if you don't take it seriously it's at least enjoyable. Still not great, especially the story, but at least it's a bit of fun. I like the girl playing Gretel.

Think its one of the worse films I've seen the last few years to be honest. Actress is Gemma Arterton so far her best work has been on TV.

Wouldn't mind checking EOT out myself. Cruise actually does those kinds of roles pretty well as long as the script is good, and Emily Blunt is always good😛

Basic Instinct (1993) 7.5/10

Verhoeven remakes his own film for hollywood, but this time turns it into a twisted, highly stylized and hammy thriller, with just enough of a plot to invest your interests, beyond the gender politics. Michael Douglas is a little too over the top in places, but Sharon Stone nicely underplays her role added a slippery and icy air to her femme fatale. Jeanne Tripplehorn does a steller job as the conflicted doctor who may or may not know more than she lets on😉

Brilliant send up of the American war movie and white conservative politics. A string of sharp comic performances, with strong direction and a fun Tom Cruise camio also. Not everything works in it, but it is really good fun.

Before Sunrise (2004) 8/10

Second part of Linklaters thriller romantic triolgy is even better than Before Sunset for me. It sparkles with ideas about life and love, is full of passion, and subtle observations. The direction is smooth and poetic, and performances once again strong. I did think maybe the film could have ended a few minutes before it did but otherwise very good.

Mama (2013) 5.5/10

Was let down by this horror having heard that it was one of the better recent ones. Just found it a bit too boring, and over the top, and not subtle enough when it came to the big scare moments. Some of the tropes are a little too old hat. But there are some good performances, strong effects, and at least the ending gives a proper pay-off if nothing else.
