The Finest Hours-8/10

That might be a bit high but I really enjoyed this movie. Maybe it's cause I was in the Coast Guard, maybe I just like boat disaster movies, but I thought this one was one of the best. It's like the last 15 minutes of Titanic, throughout most of the movie. The acting performances were all solid and great. I like seeing what the CG was like back in the 50's. Yet it didn't feel like a complete period piece. The action and suspense worked really well for me. It's not a movie for everyone probably but I really like it a lot. I might end up buying it when it comes out.

I like this one more than "No Country for Old Men". The lighting is masterpiece. Any random snapshot of the movie qualifies as a beautiful black-and-white photograph. And it's not just scene-fest, the lights and shadows reflect character psychology very smoothly and there's no pretentious feeling in them. Hats off.

I liked it, but I'll need to watch it again some time to fully appreciate all of its qualities, just like with all the other Coen films I've seen. However, I loved the bits of totally unexpected comedy in this overall rather somber film.

Think its one of theirs that slipped under the rendar a bit. Love the use of Black and White and the deadness at times is really chilling. Think I might try and re-watch it soon. Great cast too.

The Revenant (2015) 7/10

Don't think this is quite the great film a lot of people make it out to be. My main problem is that it doesn't justify the length. Considering how limited the story is I did feel it dragged on a got a bit repeative at times. Also, there is only so much of broody men in beards suffering I take. But of course it is very epic, stunning, and intense, with some excellent performances, the stand outs from DiCaprio (who will win the Oscar its his time you know😉) and Will Poulter who has really come of age.
 
Deadpool (2016): 6.5 / 10

It's exactly what you would expect from watching the previews. Although the story is a bit of a letdown, Ryan Reynolds is clearly having a lot of fun.

I just got back from seeing this. Hopefully, this one will be more of a success for him than "Green Lantern" or "The R I P D Department."

I'm off to see this tonight.

Last film I watched was Prisoners with Hugh Jackman. Not the nicest story but absolutely gripping and showing exactly what a parent can be capable of if their child goes missing. 9/10.

Spooks: The Greater Good - 3/10

Really bad, even more so if you were a fan of the TV show. Parts of it were filmed locally to me though, so it gets points for that. Not even Jon Snow can save it. He knows nothing.

Good. I thought it was horrible, but had not seen the show so thought I might have been missing something... something other than a good movie that is. It felt very paint-by-numbers.

Well, yeah. I have this list of classic noir films I want to check out because I really love the style, and The Big Heat has been on my list for a long time, as it's considered one of the best.
Also, that poster (from the re-release a couple of years ago, I think) has to be one of the coolest looking posters of all time.
 
Being Elmo - It creeped me out so much I had to stop watching about half way through.

I really like this movie. Great leads, really interesting characters.
 
The Hateful Eight - 7/10
Not the masterpiece I thought it was going to be when I read the script, but still very enjoyable. I'll need to watch it again, but, at this moment, this is probably my least favorite Tarantino film after Death Proof.
There are some scenes that I loved, and the score was just incredible, but something didn't feel right. I don't know. The last 15 minutes or so seem to be all over the place. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I think it felt very jarring with the flashback.. and then tonally it felt different after that. For me at least, the flashback took me out of the movie. Was there an intermission when you saw it?

No, no intermission. Which was too bad, because I had just had a large coffee before the film, and that wasn't exactly the best idea ever.
Anyway, I didn't really mind the flashback. It was like that in the script and it worked very well. Somehow the execution, however, wasn't as good. You're right, something about the tone was off.

The intermission was right at the flashback point. So up until the flashback/intermission you had one 'kind' of movie... then afterwards you had a different 'kind' movie. I think if it was viewed with an intermission (I think it was 15 or 20 minutes) it would have not felt as disparate. You needed a palette cleanser that the majority of viewers did not receive.
