Spuffy #5 - General Discussion

Yes! There has been so much Spike/Spuffy hate and it makes me so sad. 🙁 I love this couple and the characters so much it's hard to see them bashed unmercilessly.

No joke. I was at the doctor's office and while I was waiting, I read some of the recent Spike hate posts. When the nurse took my blood pressure, it literally went up because I was so mad. The nurse said, "That's a bit higher than usual." I didn't tell her it was because I don't get some of the Spike hate I just read lol!

I saw this Spike hate too... I want so much to answer to EACH point and each argument, because I know where I disagree 😛 . But with my poor English, it will take... like 10 hours for writing what I want to say 😱 Sometimes, I really wish I can speak English as well as French.

But I'll try, I hate the Spike hate 😛

I so want to do that too!!! Just to at least get everything out that I want to say lol! 🙂 But at the same time, I know they won't change their mind. If you can though, you should try cause your posts are always great! 🙂

I posted the thread because I wanted to understand... and I do now but I feel really bad for Spike haters. Like I want to hug them and tell them "It's ok, hopefully one day you'll see the beauty that is Spike."

It's just plain masochistic to go into that thread as a Spike/Spuffy fan, lol. 😀 I was kind of defending hate for Spike in that thread earlier because I *did* feel like it was important for people to feel comfortable saying those opinions, but like...the recent ones have made me really sad. And almost angry for how some of the hate has been phrased, particularly the comments cheering David Fury. 🙁

I took offense to the comments saying Jane Espenson's comments were "disturbing." Her comments accurately describe my feelings and they're described as "disturbing"?

I think people also forget that Jane Espenson was against having the AR at all when they were writing that...so it's also VERY plausible that she wasn't even considering the AR when she made those comments. I don't entirely agree with her cause I think Spike's equally to blame in why Spuffy had a lot of problems, but I don't find her comments that disturbing. If you look at it in response to the AR, then yes, it's plenty disturbing. But that's not what she was talking about, so. You can't take it as face value and stick it in the middle of a biased article that in the next line conveniently wonders rhetorically about the violence and attempted rape in Spuffy. It's not fair and it's out of context, simple as that.

Oh god, I get you on the David Fury frustration, because that was seriously offensive and I honestly feel like shouldn't be brought up for that particular reason.

LOL! I know what you mean. I actually identify with Spike (I identify with a lot of the Buffyverse characters, actually, but at the top of the list are Buffy, Spike, and Dawn 😀) People hate whoever they want I guess, but it's probably not healthy for a lot of us Spike lovers to defend him all the time.

In the mean time, I can't wait for Buffy #40 to come out on Wednesday! I hear there's a Back Steps-ish Spuffy scene in it, and we caught a glimpse of it in the preview panels, so I'm really excited! I want some classic Spuffy action. 😀

I don't mind if people hate the character (everyone is entitled to their own opinions), but I never knew it was so extreme! I hate Riley, but I guess not in the same way some people hate Spike, lol. What gets me a little more upset though is when some people question why we could love a character so much. Um, we like his redemption story for one thing. 🙂 Or when I hear arguments that Spike destroyed the show and took over the show. I never got that feeling when I watched. Maybe it felt that way to some viewers when they watched the show during its original run. If that's the case, then I really can't comment on that because I didn't watch it during the original run. I just know that when I watched, I always felt like it was Buffy's show and that Buffy was the main character. Spike played a part in that storyline along with his own journey, as was the case with almost every other character on the show.

Since this is a safe place for Spuffies, I feel like some of the hatred toward Spike comes from Bangels. I hate saying that, but that's a general feeling I get.

Anyways, I'm moving on from all this hatred. 🙂 All it does it fuel the fire in me to want to defend the character, yet it doesn't often lead to people wanting to see what we see because they are set on their own opinions.

soulunsung agrees: I agree, I feel like a greater portion of the Spike hate will always come from the Bangels, and what makes it sad is that I don't hate Angel at all & certainly not because B/A happened or might happen again or whatever. It's just petty.

Me too, I don't hate Angel either. I don't like him when he's with Buffy though (s3 was the kicker for me), and that was before I started even liking the idea of Buffy and Spike together. Maybe that's why some Bangels really hate Spike? They don't like the idea of him getting in the way of their precious Bangel 😉

Someone's about to pass 1,000 posts; good job StarSlayer! I can tell you as someone who watched the show on TV all the way from the premiere to the finale; Spike most definitely stole the show. The same way that Angel did in S2 and S3; so the Bangels are just nitpicking. It was even more fun watching Spuffy develop week to week when it aired; because they can't fit in everything that happened between Spike and Buffy in S7. So I got to imagine; what are those two doing right now?

I think the Spike hate is so obvious at the moment because Angel is in such a bad place narratively speaking and Spike is looking pretty good and so people, the ones who love Angel, react by reminding themselves about why they hate Spike.

And leave it to Buffy to be silly about their relationship ("Why did we ever break up") when Spike is trying to explain the truth of the matter. I felt so sad for Buffy though when she started crying over breaking the scythe, among other things. 🙁

OMG, I know! Buffy's my absolute favorite character, and it really hurts seeing her hide her feelings and blame herself like this. Poor Buffy. I just want to give her a hug. 🙁 But I just really, really love what Spike says to Buffy.

"Look, I know everybody thinks you're a useless bint that ruined everything right now, but I know the truth. You were faced with decisions no one has to make. Attacked--controlled--by forces no one comprehends, and you pulled your people through. So, honestly? F#$% anybody who thinks they could've done better. The world was on fire. The world is always on f#$%ing fire and you're always right in the thick of it and the only difference this time is that people actually noticed."

It's just perfect. And I love that he references how Buffy was controlled by the glow, because I really hate how everyone just dumps all the blame on her. She wasn't in total control of herself when she had sex with Twangel! Sheesh. 😛

That whole scene- all the snark and windowsill chatting and jokes -it's such perfect Spuffy. I totally see them as an endgame ship. Here's hoping Joss actually has the guts this season to commit to a relationship, lol. A fellow Spuffy shipper I know said this about that scene:

So there's this. Simple exchange, kind of snarky, but it makes me ridiculously happy. Mostly because:

"Are you parked on the roof again?"

"I've begged you not to call me that."

In this future, while Buffy waits tables and copes with the weight of the world, Spike's there- Spike's often there, and moments like this often happen. I don't need domestic Spuffy. I'd like some romance, but the feelings here are overt enough to satisfy me. What I want is this: a Spike who comes by all the time, with whom Buffy has long conversations on the windowsill and they bicker and tease and remain familiar with each other. I want the S7 emotions with the Intervention-through-OMWF relationship.

And the comics seem to indicate that that's happened, and for that, I'm inordinately squeeful. 🙂

I really love when he says that too! 🙂 It reminded me so much of "Touched," in how Spike just...knows Buffy. He knows it's not her fault and that she can't keep blaming herself for it all.
