Spuffy #7 - General Discussion

I agree, Reddy - Joss gives only to take away. But I'm thankful even for crumbs. I'm looking forward to Spuffy friendship, and banter, and quiproquos...

I noticed an interesting post on LJ:

Was Buffy crying on the last page of the Spike comic? I emailed Jane to find out.

All she wrote in the script for that panel was "On Buffy". But she wouldn't be surprised if Georges put it in, she's emailed him to find out. And yes it does look like a tear to her.

Looking forward to Jeanty's answer.

Is it just me, or is something up with Buffy's wardrobe? This coat is just not working for me. And in the preview of Season 9 (when Buffy's hosting the party at her new apartment), Buffy had on this awful printed top. They changed the print to a solid red color for the final draft, but still. What's up with Jeanty? Joss has said that Jeanty's one of the best costumers in comics and I agree for the most part (that I've noticed, anyway, I'm still getting used to the comics medium and I end up paying the most attention to the speech bubbles, lol), but lately...it's just looked bad!

Spike asked Buffy to borrow a toothbrush.

This is huge, I agree. There aren't many people I'd ask to borrow a toothbrush from. You'd nave to really trust someone. I guess he assumes that since they've sahred spit before what does it matter, lol? For me, this is an indication of jsut how comfortable they feel together, like how she takes showers at his place.

Looking forward to Jeanty's answer.

Wow, interesting. Post his answer when you see it!

Apparently it was not an intentional tear:

I honestly read Buffy as tearing up (ever so slightly) in that last panel of the webcomic, and when I mentioned it the first few folks responding agreed with me, so I just took it for self-evident. Anyway, turns out most people don't read it that way. So I asked Georges and he said he thinks there's an emotional content to the question Buffy is asking, but that he didn't draw her moist-eyed.

So there you go! I do still think the panel is emotionally loaded

Thanks, Tranq.

I, too, find Buffy's words to Spike very poignant and loaded with emotion. Imo, that little snippet could be a template for the relationship, lots of emotion underneath between the two of them and lots of friendly snark on the surface.

Time for some new questions I reckon...

1. Which do you consider the most Spuffy-focused episodes in the series?

2. How would you react if Buffy and/or Spike were to get involved romantically with other people in season 9?

3. Are there any Spike/Buffy scenes you love in episodes you otherwise dislike?

4. Proudest Spike's ever been of Buffy? Proudest Buffy's ever been of Spike?

5. Spuffy-related season 9 theories please! What do you think might be in store for Buffy and Spike in the coming season?

Answer any or all...

1. Which do you consider the most Spuffy-focused episodes in the series?

Hmm. This is difficult. I kind of think Sleeper is a big one. Though I'm not sure why I think it. Except that it seems to me that Buffy really shows that she does care about Spike in this one. And I like to see that.

2. How would you react if Buffy and/or Spike were to get involved romantically with other people in season 9?

Depends on how it's done. If Buffy gets to have meaningful happy fun time with someone, and Spike is all alone I will be very sad. Very very sad. Obviously the best thing would be to see them together. Having happy fun time with each other. But . . . we can only hope.

3. Are there any Spike/Buffy scenes you love in episodes you otherwise dislike?

I find it very hard to watch As You Were but I do like to watch the door scene and the "Do you love me?" Even though it hurts me.

4. Proudest Spike's ever been of Buffy? Proudest Buffy's ever been of Spike?

Hmm, Spike is always proud of Buffy. Even when she's being evil. He's like that. But Buffy was probably the most proud of Spike at the end of season 7 with the burning and the hellmouth and the saving of everyone.

5. Spuffy-related season 9 theories please! What do you think might be in store for Buffy and Spike in the coming season?

I hope that they will, at the least, be very good friends. I expect that.

1. Which do you consider the most Spuffy-focused episodes in the series?

In no particular order: Becoming 2, Something Blue, The Gift, OMWF, Chosen.

2. How would you react if Buffy and/or Spike were to get involved romantically with other people in season 9?

Well, it could happen. I don't expect overtly Spuffiness until nearly the end of season 9. I'd deal with it.

3. Are there any Spike/Buffy scenes you love in episodes you otherwise dislike?

I only dislike one Buffy epi "Deadman's Party"!

4. Proudest Spike's ever been of Buffy? Proudest Buffy's ever been of Spike?
I think their proudest moments of each came in Chosen.

5. Spuffy-related season 9 theories please! What do you think might be in store for Buffy and Spike in the coming season?

I expect a lot of UST, a lot of miss-communication, a lot of snark and a lot of poignant supportive moments.

Just a little affirmation. 😉

I've just finished a season 6/7 rewatch and just this minute finished the last episode. And really I just wanted to say I LOVE THIS COUPLE. God it scares me how much I love them. They are so perfect to me and they will alway be my best and most favourite fictional couple; I realised that no one can touch them for me. Ever.

Maybe it's just where I am as a person, a place I'm in right now- but all of the Spuffy seemed to be so much more emotional to me this time- it really connected to a place deep in my soul and I felt every moment so deeply, in a way I don't think I did before even loving them as I did.

The bed scene in touched I do believe is my most favourite moment of a fictional couple ever. It is so so simple but so beautiful in its perfection. I literally have no words, what that moment means to them as a couple, what is says about where they've been, where they are, is just indescribable. I cried, and that's a biggy for me.

And their last scene in Chosen- well I sat there with chills and I sobbed like a baby. 😀 The first time I sobbed because I felt so disappointed with the ending. After reading on forums, reading meta from much cleverer Spuffies than me I can see the immense beauty in that scene, how perfect it is to them. Every time I watch it I 'get' it a bit more.

Anyway that's all I had to say. I just adore this couple with all my soul I'm still sitting here gulping and with red eyes to show for it. Viva spuffy!

I cry when i watch that too, but i still feel, personally, that if Spike hadn't been going to Angel, that she would have saved him. At least that's what I tell myself😀 I love the Spuffy Fanfics that have her save him - they make me feel all gooey.

1. Which do you consider the most Spuffy-focused episodes in the series?
I Think Afterlife is a very Spuffy focused episode - I mean the story with he hitchhiker demon thingy is just there to put padding around the three Buffy and Spike conversations. Beneath Me is Spuffy-focused too as is Never leave Me - Bring on the Night and Showtime.

2. How would you react if Buffy and/or Spike were to get involved romantically with other people in season 9?
Well, with the suggestion out there that Buffy and the new vampire slayer guy are going to be the new item in season 9 is anything to go by then I am not coping very well - I hate him already! I mean have you seen that Georges Jeanty cover for Buffy S. 9 #3? *Vomit* *spit* *vomit* *shudder*

3. Are there any Spike/Buffy scenes you love in episodes you otherwise dislike?
I can't actually think of an answer to this one - I don't really dislike any episodes. I even like the bathroom scene in Seeing Red right up until Spike takes things too far.

4. Proudest Spike's ever been of Buffy? Proudest Buffy's ever been of Spike?
When is Spike not proud of Buffy? I think we saw good examples when she rescued the scythe in season seven and when she beat the invading demons in season 8. For Buffy, she had PRIDE written all over her when she rescued Spike in Showtime and when he chose to die in Chosen. I think she was also pretty proud of him for getting that soul.

5. Spuffy-related season 9 theories please! What do you think might be in store for Buffy and Spike in the coming season?
Until I saw the latest solicitations I thought that it would be a season in which Spike and Buffy reaffirm their friendship and perhaps make tentative steps for being something more. Now I think they are going to make Buffy have a thing with this new guy and Spike will once again be relegated to second place. BUT - with absolutely no evidence whatsoever - I'm gonna theorise that the new guy turns out to be BAD and that we do get some Spuffy progress before seasons end.

LOL Your answer to number 2 is great.
1. Which do you consider the most Spuffy-focused episodes in the series?

Hmm. Probobly "Dead Things." There is SO MUCH doing on in that episode; Buffy's self-hatred at wanting Spike, Spike's confusion at what it means to be human and his inability to understand Buffy's position regarding Katrina's "death"...fascinating interplay between fantasy and flashback...

2. How would you react if Buffy and/or Spike were to get involved romantically with other people in season 9?

Regarding Spike, it wouldn't bother me. I know Buffy's the one he loves. Him seeing other girls would only be filler, companionship, a way to pass the time. I can't see him falling for anyone else. I think he's waiting for Buffy.
As for Buffy...I don't see her dating anyone anytime soon, honestly. Not after what happened with Satsu then Angel.
So,I guess my reaction would not be of surprise. In mu opinion, nothing can touch what Spike and Buffy have, and I honestly pity any character who tries to get involved with either of them.

3. Are there any Spike/Buffy scenes you love in episodes you otherwise dislike?

I love the scene in DP where Spike comes up to the counter and offers Buffy money, and says that she's too good to be working there. I dislike the rest of the episode, though.

4. Proudest Spike's ever been of Buffy? Proudest Buffy's ever been of Spike?

Spike to Buffy: I think Spike is constantly in awe of Buffy.
Buffy to Spike: Chosen, hands-down. For me, her "I love you" was just another way of saying "I'm proud of you."

5. Spuffy-related season 9 theories please! What do you think might be in store for Buffy and Spike in the coming season?

Ohh, I hope lots of good things! I see them working side-by-side much more often, and doing lots of talking...and maybe some drunken smoochies, lol.

Yes to the DMP answer at #3 - awesome scene in an average episode
I would love it if on the next pages we see Buffy getting mad at him for kissing another girl 😀

Regarding Spike making out with girl on couch: I'm okay with it. I'm irritated, but we can't expect him to not date. I doubt it's anything serious. And yes, perhaps they're all under a love spell. We've seen this before, after all. Or hell, maybe he's passing the time with other girls. He has a right to. in S7, when he was out seeing girls at night, he wasn't apologetic about it. I don't think he needs to be. Messing around with other girls is a way for him to pass the time. As he said before, and I think it's still true;
no other girl will never mean anything to him compared to Buffy.

Also, regarding the lower left panel, Buffy's body language is rather telling. She's leaning into him and clearly flirting. And I love that they're texting, lol. That suggests that they've become closer.

I have some questions for you all:

1. What do you is the most important or influential thing that Buffy has said to Spike? What about Spike to Buffy?

2. Do you think that Buffy is still in love with Spike? Do you think Spike is still in love with Buffy?

3. If someone asked you why you love Spuffy so much, what would you say if you only had one sentence to explain?

4. Why do you think Spike and Buffy are right for each other?

I feel like I should respond to all of the questions asked recently that I haven't responded to... but I want to respond to Joan's first.

1. What do you is the most important or influential thing that Buffy has said to Spike? What about Spike to Buffy?
Buffy to Spike :"I believe in you, Spike." or "Ask me again why I could never love you."
Spike to Buffy :the Touched speech. all of it.

2. Do you think that Buffy is still in love with Spike? Do you think Spike is still in love with Buffy?
I think they're still in love with each other. I don't think Buffy knows she's in love with Spike still and that's ok. Spike, however, is always painfully aware of his feelings.

3. If someone asked you why you love Spuffy so much, what would you say if you only had one sentence to explain?
Because I believe love can change people for the better.

4. Why do you think Spike and Buffy are right for each other?
They make each other better people. It is through their love that both of them get the strength to do what is necessary, and seemingly impossible.

Also, I think the fact that Spike is making out with that girl is also supposed to demonstrate how alone Buffy is. She clearly doesn't fit in with the San Fran hippie crowd. Notice everyone in the background is coupled up but her.

Buffy looks sad and lonely while partolling, too. I can relate with her so much lately...

Exactly what I think Joan. I really hope that's right... because like you said, I relate to that so much right now. My friends just left to go off to college and I'm literally alone. I hang out with my mom and her husband and their alcoholic, ignorant, high school drop out friend to pass the time because I'm so bored and lonely. If Buffy's feeling really lonely, I'll feel less alone.
