People will have to explain something to me.

Why is it a mistake if S-7 says the line now passes at least through Buffy now, but it's not a mistake when the line can pass through a thousand girls at the end to Chosen.

It's only a mistake if you think no new slayer was called after Buffy's The Gift-death.
(And did the line go through all the new slayers after Chosen..?)

Duh huh. As I've said before, this is the only way I think it could have happened:

I think the whole "battery" theory was spouted pre-S6 or it was even made up. I don't think we have any substantial proof of this.

When Buffy was brought back from the heaven by the spell in Bargaining her body had already decomposed. You can't just say POOF and have Buffy back as normal. Every organ and every cell would have to be rebuilt.

And as a former Slayer, Buffy's body would have been used to the power of the Slayer. And since we know that the power is mystical, wouldn't Buffy's body have to reach out to where ever the source of the Slayer's power exists and grab some of it? Because she still retains all of her powers post Bargaining.

Plus there is a distinct physical or spiritual trait that a potential slayer has to have and Buffy had it.

Or I could go out on a huge limb here and say:

What if Buffy's death in The Gift activated herself? Thats pretty far fetched, which I just made up two seconds ago.

Though if Buffy was re-inserted into the Slayer line in Bargaining, then wouldn't have the events in Villians led to the calling of another Slayer? Which makes sense as to why the First attacks in a post-Villians S7 setting.

Hell, we didn't hear about Kendra or Faith until we met her, so theres no proof that another slayer wasn't activated in Villians.

Or the corruption could have started in Prophecy Girl. Maybe the First realized a little late of what destruction it could do to the Slayer line. Because if the Slayer line was meant to have more than one Slayer then there would have been more than one Slayer. But yet there never was until Buffy You can't put me down Summers showed up.

Which what makes me so mad about Chosen. I think 200 Slayers would do a lot of damage to the Slayer line, if more than one does enough for the First to try to kill every potential.

Ah so confusing.

This time it was my typo. 🙂 I meant to say the line passed through to all those potentials.

Well, that's kinda exactly what I was trying to say 🙂 Maybe I didn't explain myself too well..

Ah, ok. But that didn't really happen naturally. I mean that wasn't supposed to happen at all.. And the weird thing isn't that all those girls became slayers, the weird thing is if a new slayer would be called if any of them died.. I don't really see the problem in all of them becoming slayers.. Don't think that's the same problem as if the line passes through two slayers.. (Do I make any sense..?)

I really like that one. That's something I've never seen before. It deserves thought. Perhaps she was activated into the heavenly plane Willow and the others called her from.

I like the other one too, about how Buffy was recreated magically, so the slayer line was in effect magically duplicated.

Well it seems I've caused quite a stir.

Maybe there's something about this in the Buffy Season Guides. Cos they always have sections about continuity and this is a big thing.

I think the Slayer line stopped running through Buffy in Prophecy Girl, even if they kept mentioning it in Season 7 that it does. I think that since a Slayer coming back (....and coming back...) has never really happened before, they didn't know the Slayer line wouldn't run through her. The just assumed that Buffy was the Slayer, but in my opinion, Faith was the current Slayer pre-scythe.

Actually none of the scythe activated potentials would call another Slayer. They technically aren't Slayers, just girls with the powers of the Slayer.

I believe Joss is supposed to sum up something in Fray about this, but as I see it, only Faith and or Buffy can call a Slayer. Thats if Buffy was re-inserted into the line and then we have to count the possibility of the whole Villains flatlined thing!

Because in the Frayverse, there is only one Slayer not an army. Which would happen if every potential could create another Slayer. But they didn't. As you know, one girl per time had the power, not plural.

Haha, funny thought. If there were Slayers in pre-Fray/post-Buffy times, they probably lived to be like 90 or atleast a decent age. Could you imagine Super Slayer Granny. Don't try to snatch her purse. Get beat the hell down. Not to mention no arthritis.

OOOOOO, a "firefight" in my forum....cool. Nah, you guys are behaving nicely...most of you, anyway...there are some good theories here I haven't seen before too.

My take on it is this: after the generation of the multiple slayers passes, the line will dwindle to one Slayer. If Buffy is back in the line, when she dies a new slayer will be called. Faith and the "potentials" will not generate a call when they die. I would like to believe that the spell calling the potentials contained a part that prevented anyone but THE slayer to call a new one upon their death, thus ending Faith's line as well as the potentials' lines. Buffy may have died multiple times, and called slayers out of turn, but a side effect of the scythe spell is that only one will call the next slayer...as slayer with tenure, as it were, this would be Buffy. The slayer line is expanded for a generation in order to repair it. My theory...

Ok, if were back in the thought that the line goes through only one slayer (which is of course the most logical theory) I have to go with Faith. Not just to show my support to her but also cause I think it's too complicated that the line passes through Faith for a while but then goes back to Buffy. And then I'm back on the thought that the mentionings in season 7 about "if Buffy dies another slayer is called" are mistakes..
(Though I don't like this theory either.. It's just the most logical one to me right now..)

Let's talk about logic for a sec.

In Chosen The First Evil says the line passes through Buffy. Who besides Cordelia has ever said the line passes through Faith? Marti Noxon did pre-Season 5, but Joss Whedon wrote the First Evil line in Season 7.

Of Cordelia or Marti Noxon, vs. The First Evil or Joss Whedon which ones are more likely to know how the slayer line works. And let's remember Cordelia was just guessing at the time, and it was in Season 3.

But wait the way the theory goes, all the mentions of the line passing through Buffy in Season 7 are mistakes. Who made them then? Joss Whedon who wrote Chosen? Are you telling me I shouldn't believe Joss? Are you saying what Joss says is a mistake?

Oh, but I almost forgot there have been a couple of mentions of a quote by Joss Whedon saying something like a slayer is like a battery or something, and this quote is supposed to prove Joss said the slayer line could only run through Faith. I don't know how many times I've asked for a link to this quote since rumour of it turned up a few months ago with a new member. No-one has been able to provide such a link. Do you know why? I have a theory. It doesn't exist.

Would you like to see what does exist?

https://www.buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?t=5934

I'll save you the visit to it, and tell you what it is. It's a post by a user from 2003, explaining his personal theory on how the slayer line is like a battery. Don't think that's the original quote. Fine. Search for the one by Joss Whedon then. I did. The only thing I could find was the message board quote above. Find that original quote, link to it, and I'll give you an apology. You won't find it though, because it doesn't exist.

So let's talk about logic some more. On the "slayer-line passes through Faith" side we have evidence from a Season 3 quote by Cordelia, an old pre-Season 5 quote from Marti Noxon, and a rumour of a mysterious Joss Whedon quote from a 13 fan who thinks he might have heard it somewhere, some time.

On the "Slayer line passes through at least Buffy in Season 7" side, we have three mentions of it from 4 separate characters, one of them written by Joss Whedon, as well as Beljoxa's eye's statement there is a "disruption in the slayer line".

So tell me again why Faith is the "logical choice". If you meant to say emotional choice, that's cool, but the "logical" thing just doesn't stand up. It lacks support.

About logic. I wasn't talking about the logic because of who wrote/said what, but the logic of what actually happened in the show.

Faith was called after the death of Kendra, if it wasn't because of Kendra's death then why was she called? Buffy didn't die in season two did she? I know the only one (in the show) who said Faith was called because of Kendra's death, was Cordelia. And I'm not saying she's the one who knew everything about how the slayer line works, but why would Joss have her explain that to us if it weren't true..? (I know Joss didn't write Faith, Hope & Trick but I trust he knew what happened.) Ok, Joss isn't the one who usually tells his viewers everything, but why give us such an explanation, just to have us fooled?

So ok, in the show, Faith is called after Kendra's death, which is a reason to believe that the line passes through her now. When Buffy died in The Gift no new slayer (that we know of) was called, which is a reason to believe the line didn't go through her anymore.
In season 7 many people mention that if Buffy dies another slayer is called, I know that. I'm not saying it's likely Joss made that lot of mistakes, he usually doesn't.
The answer could be as simple as they wanted us to know that the line passes through Buffy now (and just not give us a reason why it suddenly changed), cause if the line passed through Faith it would give Faith a much more important part of everything and Buffy wouldn't be that superior, and I'd understand if they wanted Buffy to be really really important in the end of the show (when all of a sudden there were a lot of slayers around).
I'm not saying I believe in this theory, I'm just trying to figure something out. Cause this isn't really about which side you're on or if you believe this or that. You've got to find a theory that coveres all the questions, not just a yes or no answer..

(No I did mean to say emotional choice. That's why I said, "not just to show my support".. This has nothing to do with the fact that I like Faith more than Buffy. I'm just thinking out loud and I love to hear theories about this and I'd like to someday find out the "truth".)

Does anyone else think it's possible for the slayer line to pass through both Faith and Buffy? Maybe that's what the whole "disruption" was that Beljoxa's eye talked about...

Yeah Cordelia. I'm on board. I think it's possible.

And eponithen, I think I understand you now, and you know what? I think you've got a point.

I think what you're saying is it makes more sense to you that the slayer line passes through Faith, because that was explained in a clear, sensible manner, whereas the S 7 change in the slayer line never was. I actually agree with you. Not letting the fans in on the secret of the disruption in the slayer line by explaining it in black and white feels like a Season 7 mistake.

I think it makes sense that the two of them pass it on...although I don't understand why the First mortally (or so it seemed) wounded Buffy and went after Faith before all the potentials were killed in the final battle.

Its not possible for the line to go through Buffy & Faith. Unless both of them have to die to call a new slayer. Because if the line did go through both of them, separately, then there would be TWO Slayers in the Frayverse. Well unless my theory about the Frayverse is true.
In the epic battle pre-Frayverse we see a Slayer wielding the scythe, who seems to resemble Buffy physically (though we see no defining image) and we see her preparing to fight an army of demons. The next image we see is the girl being pulled into a dimensional vortex by a squid like demon. I think this was Buffy and she got pulled into some hell dimension. So both her and Faith could have carried the line, but what if Buffy just never came back to Earth? That would be a hell of a Fray storyline

I'm torn because the line should technically be Faith's, but Buffy did have a mysterious coming back. Then you have to factor in the flatlining.

Interesting question, when Joss writes an episode, does he write the entire thing? I mean were supposed to take his word over everything.

So this is what I've got so far:

Bargaining put Buffy back into the line, which I'm guessing didn't cause the disruption. Because I think the event in Villians 'caused the disruption.

I'm thinking theres another Chosen one out there activated by the flatlining seen in Villians... I mean we have no proof she doesn't exist.

Or we could go with an ethical debate. Buffy was always seen as the greater Slayer between herself and Faith, what if the mystical forces just decided to jump to Buffy. I mean the Powers that Be have to trust her more, considering all thats she done, the countless Apocalypses and daily slayage. But I don't think thats it.

Ok I have too many damn theories.

Thanks, I'm always a little nervous posting things that just came into my mind a second before I wrote it.. heh.

And Cordelia, I'd love to believe the line passes through both of them, but just like Slayer, The said, it doesn't work with Fray.. And (I don't know if I'm right about this) but didn't someone in season 7 say that the only way a new slayer is activated is if Buffy dies..

I don't think it works like that.. And even if Buffy is the greater slayer (not saying that she is), would that make her death activate a better slayer than the one Faith's death would activate..?

If the line was through Faith in season 3 and through Buffy in season 7, I think the change must've been when Buffy was resurrected.. That somehow, cause she was the "new" slayer, the "real slayer"-thing got back into her.. (That's my theory right now.. I'll probably change my mind in an hour or something..)
