oh god, it´s a tie. haha Sorry.

I voted Spike cause she was cooler with him. Probably if he didn´t die, she eventually would get rid of the brooding moment and just enjoy herself with him. With Angel would be ALWAYS that melodrama Wesley and Cordy showed us  Angel has personality problems, like he feels inferior and all.. this mixed with a girl that doesn´t know herself is a bomb.

Bangel is the obvious winner Buffy and Angel belong together Angel started his quest for redemption because he saw Buffy as she become a slayer and he loved her from the start as human aswel as a slayer. They are champions of the people pure of heart and lets face it if it was not for Angel they would still be together its only because Angel loved Buffy so much he let her go so she could try and have a normal life.

Now lets look at Spike the only reason he didn't keep trying to kill Buffy was because of the chip that is not love. He tried to rape Buffy is that love? I don't think so.
Also at the end of season 7 she hinted on going to Angel she always runs to Angel even Spike knows Buffy didn't love him.

Bangel is the obvious winner.

Spuffy Ftw. I'm not even gonna bother to write an argument as all the ones above my post are amazing and far more intelligent than anything I'd come up with. White avengers posts always make me feel dumb lol.

YAY a Spuffy banner! We need all we can get, lol
Spuffy is winning by one!!!!!! I think there is way too much Bangel love on here anyway 😛 Im not going to re-post my thoughts on why Spuffy is forever because I already have, I just wanted to say my Spikey was winning!!!! 😛. *happy dance*

Angel started his quest for redemption because he saw Buffy as she become a slayer and he loved her from the start as human aswel as a slayer.

Buffy made Spike search for redemption, too. 🙂 And quite frankly, I really don't believe that "he loved her as a human" or when he first saw her. It sounds a lot like the conversations in Him:

BUFFY You don't even know this R.J. Not really.

DAWN (sits up in the bed) I do know him. I know his soul.

BUFFY Really? Dawn, he wasn't even on your radar yesterday.

DAWN It isn't a crush. It's love. I love R.J.

BUFFY Again, since yesterday. Dawn, it's awfully fast.

Orr,

WILLOW But you don't even know him!

ANYA Yes, I do. I looked into him and saw his soul.

WILLOW He was walking away, so unless his soul was in his ass -

ANYA A.J. is my best friend and my dearest darling -

WILLOW It's R.J. And what you were picking up on was his deep caring and devotion to me.

They are champions of the people

Spike was a champion, too. In fact, both Angel and Buffy have said that Spike is a champion.

pure of heart and lets face it if it was not for Angel they would still be together its only because Angel loved Buffy so much he let her go so she could try and have a normal life.

But that's their problem: Both of them are so focused on having "a normal life", that they barely even try to make their relationship work. Neither of them are normal people, they're not going to get a normal life. Buffy tried with Riley, and we all know how that ended up.

Now lets look at Spike the only reason he didn't keep trying to kill Buffy was because of the chip that is not love.

He didn't have a soul. ANGEL tried to kill Buffy, Buffy's friends and family, and everything that Buffy loved when he was soulless, but you don't hold him responsible for that, do you?

He tried to rape Buffy is that love? I don't think so.

This has been discussed so many times, I'm sure all of you know my opinion on this matter by now. 🙂 I'll just leave it at he was soulless at the time. He NEVER tried anything when he had a soul, unlike Angel.

Also at the end of season 7 she hinted on going to Angel she always runs to Angel even Spike knows Buffy didn't love him.

She didn't really hint. OK, I'm assuming that you're taking "the hint" from "Angel- sometimes I do think that far ahead." She COULD have been letting him down easy, you know, actually hinting that SPIKE was the one she was thinking of. And, as Angel said, "I'm gettin' the brush off for Captain Peroxide."

Bangel is the obvious winner.

You have yet to prove that. 😀

IMO, "frienship" is a mutual feeling of understanding and affection with another person who you enjoy being mentally close to. I don't see how someone can be in love with someone that they're not friends with.

Many Bangel's enjoy Spike's speech in Lovers Walk: "You're not friends. You'll never be friends.
You'll be in love till it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other till it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends." But I see it as more of a negative thing. Not being best friends with your lover is definitely not a good thing. Love is all about understanding, empathy, trust, respect. People who know everything about each other, and can talk about anything. They joke, and hang out, and share their thoughts, and have fun doing it. Love is really just another level of friendship. You really CAN'T love someone that you don't already love and value as a friend. Love is all about a friendship set on fire, more passionate. I see it as a friendship where you enjoy both emotional and physical closeness.

Also, little side note about the "you'll be in love 'til it kills you both" part: Angel's already dead, and Buffy died at the end of S5. 😀

Also, they can't "shag", so that part was obviously false. 🙂

Now, to Spuffy: In S7, Spike was Buffy's best friend. She took care of him when he was having issues, and always believed in him. He was there for her when no one else was, and he gave her the strength she needed to defeat Caleb. Buffy said many times that she felt as though Spike was the only one watching her back, and said that if Wood ever tried to hurt/ kill Spike again, she'd let Spike kill him. Joss said in the Chosen Commentary that the Spuffy relationship "had enough trust in it that it was physical and romantic, but not sexual." She confided in him things that she couldn't tell anyone else, and she always took him with her to help out with the potentials. She often hung out and talked to him in the basement, and said that she "believed in" him. She trusted him not to do anything, and removed his chip to save him. She definitely loved him, at the very least as a friend. She wouldn't say that she loved him if she didn't. When she says she loves someone, she means it. Also, I think it's fair to say she loved him as more than a friend. (I.e, her jealous behavior and the "he's with me" when Faith came in Dirty Girls) In End of Days, she told him that the night they spent together in Touched meant something to her, and that she was there with him. When Spike asked what that meant, she said "does it have to mean something?" "Maybe later-" Which, coincidentally, sounds a LOT like the "bangel" cookie analogy. She's not sure if they can have a relationship now, but maybe later. Sound familiar? 😀

Spuffy was a relationship of understanding, compassion, love, trust, and development. They weren't in love when they first met, or even years after they met. It was a slow process. They took time to get to know each other. And boy, judging from their journey from enemies to allies to unrequited love to sex partners to friends and lovers, I'd say that they know more about every aspect of each other than anyone else ever will. They don't have a "normal" relationship, and they shouldn't. They have a very passionate way of interacting, and many of the writers have said that Spike "is in many ways, her counterpart. And closer to her than many of the other characters."

Also, in the Buffy Season 8 comics, it is shown that Buffy loves both Spike and Angel equally. So that answers that question. 😀

In the Angel comics, Angel said that is one true love was his son. Not Buffy, or any other girl. Which answers THAT question.

Bangel was in many ways a more childlike relationship. I know that she killed him and all, but I don't see that as making their relationship more mature. 🙂 As Buffy, Angel, and Spike have all said, Bangel isn't friendship. It's just a flame of passion, but sooner or later that fire is going to burn out. Romance like that doesn't last. You need a much deeper connection to make it work.

Also, not to hate on Angel or anything, but he's kind of a creep. 😀 I mean, I love the guy, but he hired someone to spy on his ex- girlfriend! Not healthy, that's for sure.

Also, the Bangel relationship wasn't very "relationship- y". Angel seemed to make all the decisions, without ever consulting Buffy to ask for her opinion, even though this opinions greatly influenced her. Buffy's age alone (15) when the attraction first started was bad in itself. I don't really understand how someone at Angel's age could "fall in love" with someone who turned 15 only four months ago, or vice- versa, but IMO it's a bit disturbing. Buffy was still a child; She said herself that she didn't "want to grow up."(I'm sorry, can't remember the episode name, but it was in S2 I believe)

Over the years, Buffy developed into an empathetic, caring, strong, helpful person, but she was still "cookie dough". She must have been a cookie RECIPE when she was with Angel.

So in conclusion, Spuffy is way better than Bangel.

I just wanted to say something about this...

First off, "Unlike Angel"?!? Unlike Angel what?

Second of all, whenever the the topic of the attempted rape is brought up Spuffies clamour over themselves to tell us all he was soulless so it doesn't count. Ok, but then when Spike does good deeds sans soul you all rush even faster to say it is testament to what a unique vampire he is and his capacity for humanity is beautiful.

So which is it? Cuz to me playing both cards is having your cake and eating it too.

I think she's referring to when Angel hit Buffy in 'Amends.'

I've never seen myself as clamoring, but...

I in no way try to either excuse or discount Spike's assault on Buffy, call it attempted rape, attempted seduction, or whatever. I will point out, however, that, other than that one incident, Spike DID do things that could only be interpreted as good acts, regardless of whether they were to impress Buffy, or to honor his promise to her to take care of Dawn and help the gang patrol the hellmouth. That doesn't cancel out "Seeing Red," but it is still a fact. Minus his soul, Spike did do good things. Angelus never did, and it is even arguable whether or not Angel ever willingly did anything to help anyone prior to being recruited by Whistler.

Spike cared about people. Without a soul, he still loved his mother, and no one can doubt that he loved and protected Dru, despite her unfaithfulness to him, for decades. Angelus used people. Beyond taking pleasure in the pain and humiliation of not only his victims, but also the members of his own vampiric family. at least Dru and Spike.

There can be no argument to the simple facts. Spike, even without a soul, did do things that could only be defined as good. Angelus never did. That makes Spike the better person in my book.

I'm so not taking that Angel bait 😛

My point though is that alot of the time, to me anyway, it seems that Spike is soulles when it suits the arguement but good when it suits another.

Personally, I feel that Spike wasn't the average run of the mill vamp and clearly had a capacity for love and demonstrated that several times. However, I also feel that responsibility he should shoulder for what he did in Seeing Red is often cast aside. Do I think he would have done it after he got a soul? No, but that doesn't negate from the fact that he was clearly far more evolved emotionally for the incident to attributed to his lack of soul.

Angel.
It's not really the Spuffyrelationship I have something against (though I only kinda liked them in s5, totally hated them in s6, and started to love them in some episodes of season 7) , but I think, and I know ya'll will disagree, that Spike became a boring (maybe boring is a big word, let's say "less cool" 😀) character when he was in love with Buffy.

Ofcourse, Buffy and Spike had some beautiful moments (The end of Fool For Love, Touched, Showtime, when I almost fell in love with them...), but no, I missed the old Spike (with Dru, that should have been forever, if you ask me)

Gosh, this is hard, I love them, but I hate them 😀

I'm not good at the whole discussingthing when it comes to Spuffy and Bangel 😀

Sorry, I wasn't trying to bait you.

And, I agree, Spike appears to be unique among vampires, at least the ones that we have seen, in his sense of loyalty and honor, as well as his ability to actually love. And as far as shouldering any responsibility for his actions in "Seeing Red" is concerned, I thought that that was what the whole trip to Africa in quest of a soul thing was about. That's not cast aside, that's bragged about. Haven't you ever heard the one about how: Angel got his soul as a curse, in punishment for what he did, while Spike got his soul as a reward. Angel was cursed with his soul, Spike earned his. Whistler had to drag Angel out of the alley and put him on his way, while Spike pulled himself out of the cellar and got on with the job at hand. And so on.

(And for the record, I don't hold Angel anywhere near as responsible for the sins and atrocities that Angelus committed as a lot of people hold ensouled Spike responsible for what soulless Spike did.)

As for using Spike's soul, or lack of it, to excuse or dismiss anything that he ever did, I don't think that I've ever done that, at least not intentionally. I'm not of the "Spike can do no wrong" club, but I do believe that he tried very hard, even before he had a soul, to do the right thing, even when meant withstanding torture rather than betraying Dawn's secret to Glory.

As I've said before, the whole Spike without and Spike with a soul issue would have been much easier to handle if we had a "Spikeus" who, upon retrieving his soul, became simply "Spike."

Spike isn't perfect, and I hope that I've never given the impression that I believed that he was. He's not perfect. But he's a lot closer to perfection than someone else that I could name.

Hah, like white avenger, I don't think I tend to clamor. But I do get your point. Personally, I have a lot of opinions on the attempted rape scene; they range from the writers shouldn't have done to it Spike wouldn't have done it. But if I have to accept the Seeing Red scene for what it is (and I usually do), then I never really try to defend it, and I certainly don't try to defend it by saying he was soulless. I guess I felt a lot like Dawn when it happened; I'd believed in Spike's ability to be good, and the fact that he tried to hurt Buffy in such a way kinda broke my heart. I also find it a kind of catch-all for Angel fans, because once they bring it up, well, how can us Spike fans defend him? You can't defend Spike without defending sexual assault, and that puts us in a very difficult place. Of course, we have catch-all's of our own, like Spike winning his soul, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. =P

The only thing I will say is that I don't think the scene had its intended affect. I didn't see cruel, heartless evil in Spike's actions. I saw madness and insanity and a creature who had deluded himself into thinking this was right for the woman he loved. But calculated evil? That's really not what I saw.

The incident shouldn't be attributed to lack of soul, but I find it interesting that there's such a double-standard there. Everything Angelus did, Angel is more or less forgiven because he has a soul. Is it because he broods and feels the weight of his guilt? Or maybe it's because, like you said, Spike was so much more evolved as a soulless vampire that he began to be held to human standards. Still, Angelus tortured Buffy and her friends and then killed Jenny Calender, and if I remember right, they forgave him (well, I'm not sure about Giles and Xander--I really can't remember. But Buffy did, and she's what counts). I find it very interesting that their characters are so different--that when Spike gets a soul he doesn't turn into William and become a completely different person. I wouldn't want him to, and I really wouldn't want him to be held to Angel's standards. I guess I'm just playing devil's advocate here by bringing it up. =D

It's not every Spuffy that defends what happened in Seeing Red, I should have clarified that. Sorry about that guys 😉

I think it is because Angel and his demon are so distinct from each other that people find it easier to dissassociate Angelus' acts of violence from Angel. Plus Angel openly and actively atones for what his demon has done (aswell for he himself has done). While Spike choose to get his soul. To be honest, I think this balances them out. Each one, in their own way, fought for their souls.

I get wanting to defend Spike, God knows my first reaction is to defend Angel but I think we all keep comparing them in an unfair way.

WA, mentioned that it would be so much easier for Spike to have a "Spikeus" alter ego. I think the only people it would be easier for are Spike fans. I think his failures should be acknowledged as much as his triumphs, it makes for a much richer character, and a more worthwhile journey for that character.

I really don't see how you can even put Angelus into the equation. He wasn't forced to hang out with Buffy without a soul. He was evil, turned good, and went evil again. Naturally, if you're evil and someone made you feel like a good person, once you're evil you're going to lash out at them again.

I mean we saw how much it irritated the hell out of Spike that he couldn't hurt anyone.

I just watched season two, and I don't care what Joss or anyone else says, Spike didn't love Buffy back then. He wanted her dead. Right before he left he says "God, he's gonna kill her" in reference to Buffy & Angelus sword fighting and right after he shrugs and takes off. He only aligned with Buffy in order to get Drusilla back. & like when he got the chip, he had no where else to go once Dru dumped him and ended up having to hang around Buffy & her friends.

Then there's that whole "If Angelus was forced to hang aroud Buffy with a chip, he'd just get someone to kill her." Spike's done that before, when he couldn't do it himself. Even when he had the chip, it got to a point where he was fed up and tried to distance himself from the Scoobies and try to be evil again. & besides, like everyone else has said, Spike is the same person, soulless or not, chip or not... for the most part anyways. He's still sensitive, he still has the ability to love, he still has humanity.

And, that's the Spuffies' main argument right?

But, it's not even really fair to compare their relationships. Spike & Angel are two completely different people. Spuffy's & Bangel's relationships took completely different paths.

Buffy & Angel fell in love, got together, and after alot they had to end it because Angel felt she deserved more, and they both needed to do their own thing.
Spike & Buffy started a sexual relationship, because he fell in love with her and she hated herself and used him to feel something... or anything after being taken from heaven. She ended it when she realized it was unhealthy to continue.

Bangel's are accused of "ignoring" season 7, but that was a friendship, not a relationship. I thought they made great friends, it really made me happy seeing them so close. I think it should've been that way, in the beginning. Him being there for her in the way he was in season 7, not sleeping with her. IMO, he took advantage of her because he wanted her and she hated herself.

Watch the scene with Buffy and Tara in Dead Things and that will tell you why I'm not a Spuffy. She's literally sobbing because she hates herself and what she's done with Spike.

Whoa, there are a lot of potential arguments in that post, GrrArgh! =P I'll just pick out a few:

Spike was evil in the beginning. I don't think Spike fans deny this, but of course I haven't talked to every single one, so I don't know. I think he was attracted to the Slayer in Season 2, sure. But I never thought he loved her then. He still loved Dru, and he'd do anything for the bat-crazy vampire at this point. I think he always harbored an obsession for the Slayer (Hence Dru saying, "Why can't you let her go!?" or something of that sort).

I don't think it was until Season 5 that he really started to love her, and at first his love was admittedly creepy. But towards the latter half, he really showed how selfless and good his love had become. He didn't start out good. His love didn't start out good. But I think both grew until they were something akin to good.

I only bring up Angelus because I think the differences between Angel and Spike are interesting. Like I said, I wouldn't want Spike to have a "Spikelus" or for Angel to be considered the same person as Angelus. I just think the differences are striking between them.

As for Season 7, it was a relationship. This is probably something Angel fans and Spike fans are going to argue about until the end of time, but I truly, honestly believe it was a relationship. It was a slow one, because they had to rebuild what they had before--and they had to rebuild it on solid, level ground. It was the evolution of their relationship to friends, and to being able to count on one another for something other than sex. She finally finds the value in his love, I think, and sees that he will be there for her through anything, even when he other friends aren't.

I've argued the S6 Spuffy relationship thing, so I'm not really going to start it again here. The only thing I will say is as much as Spike used her, she used him. She used his unfailing devotion to her, because she knew he wouldn't say no. Also, I don't think it's what she's done with Spike so much as what she's done to Spike. And I don't think you can place the blame for what she's done with Spike solely on Spike. Buffy made her choices; she initiated most of the encounters. She was not the innocent victim being abused by the evil vampire, at least not in my eyes.

Kean: I don't think it'd be easier for Spike fans if Spike had an alter ego. Or, maybe it is for some, but I certainly wouldn't want that. I love pre-soul Spike, and I wanted him to find redemption and atone for his sins. I didn't necessarily want there to be a soul involved, and once there was, I definitely didn't want to forget about pre-soulled Spike. That was the character I loved.

This is longer than I meant it to be, hah. I think I'm done now!
