I've argued the S6 Spuffy relationship thing, so I'm not really going to start it again here. The only thing I will say is as much as Spike used her, she used him. She used his unfailing devotion to her, because she knew he wouldn't say no. Also, I don't think it's what she's done with Spike so much as what she's done to Spike. And I don't think you can place the blame for what she's done with Spike solely on Spike. Buffy made her choices; she initiated most of the encounters. She was not the innocent victim being abused by the evil vampire, at least not in my eyes.

I think we are pretty much on the same page on everything, but I just wanted to address this.

I agree more or less that Buffy was equally cruel to Spike as he was to her, they are both guilty (although I do think he was too forceful in his pursuit of her). I can't help but feel when I hear this arguement that it is a justification of Spike's actions but even more so, an indictment of the Spuffy relationship. I honestly feel that instead of being something that solidifies what they had in season 6 it shows even more how much Spuffy doesn't work as a romantic/sexual relationship.

I really don't see how you can even put Angelus into the equation. He wasn't forced to hang out with Buffy without a soul. He was evil, turned good, and went evil again. Naturally, if you're evil and someone made you feel like a good person, once you're evil you're going to lash out at them again.

I agree. 🙂

I mean we saw how much it irritated the hell out of Spike that he couldn't hurt anyone.

Well, yes. It's only natural. Remember how horrified Buffy was when she lost her powers? It's the same thing.

I just watched season two, and I don't care what Joss or anyone else says, Spike didn't love Buffy back then.

Joss WROTE the show, therefore what he said was true. Something isn't going to stop being canon just because you don't agree with it. 😀 Although I will say that it's hard to believe that he was actually in love with her, considering he didn't know her, but what Joss says is true I guess. 🙂

He wanted her dead. Right before he left he says "God, he's gonna kill her" in reference to Buffy & Angelus sword fighting and right after he shrugs and takes off. He only aligned with Buffy in order to get Drusilla back. & like when he got the chip, he had no where else to go once Dru dumped him and ended up having to hang around Buffy & her friends.

He didn't know he loved her. And he was a vampire, of course he wanted her dead. 🙂 But Spike did say in Never Leave Me that he was going easy on her. ("No, you got off easy too.")

Then there's that whole "If Angelus was forced to hang aroud Buffy with a chip, he'd just get someone to kill her." Spike's done that before, when he couldn't do it himself. Even when he had the chip, it got to a point where he was fed up and tried to distance himself from the Scoobies and try to be evil again. & besides, like everyone else has said, Spike is the same person, soulless or not, chip or not... for the most part anyways. He's still sensitive, he still has the ability to love, he still has humanity.

And, that's the Spuffies' main argument right?

Uh, no... I've never heard of THAT argument before. Spuffy isn't about what Angel(us) did or did not do in comparison to Spike. It's about what Spike and Buffy had.

But, it's not even really fair to compare their relationships. Spike & Angel are two completely different people. Spuffy's & Bangel's relationships took completely different paths.

And some took better paths than others. 🙂

Buffy & Angel fell in love, got together, and after alot they had to end it because Angel felt she deserved more, and they both needed to do their own thing.

Exactly. They were both still developing into the people they were going to be. And that's another thing I find annoying about Bangel. They spent their entire relationship talking about how they could never be together, instead of actually enjoying their time together. Quite honestly I find it to be quite a drag, I always skip forward. 🙂

Spike & Buffy started a sexual relationship

Um, they most certainly didn't. 😀 Buffy and Spike FIRST started as mortal enemies. They then became hesitant allies, and then friends. I'd say their friendship started in S4, and really blossomed after he sacrificed himself for her in Intervention. In those last few episodes, she hung out in his crypt, just talking, considered his opinions, brought him with her on the bus, and entrusted him with Dawn.

In S6, they began a stronger friendship, built of mutual understanding for each other. Buffy only started the sexual relationship with him because 1, she wanted to feel something. 2, He loved her unconditionally. 3, He was strong and could hurt her. 4, she wanted him. I don't really make it out to be as awful as people like to discuss it as. It was a very interesting and explorative relationship. And afterwards, they were still friends. Like how they were sitting together and playing cards in Older and Faraway.

because he fell in love with her and she hated herself and used him to feel something... or anything after being taken from heaven. She ended it when she realized it was unhealthy to continue.

She ended it because she saw the great, loving relationship Riley and Sam had, and it made her realize, ESPECIALLY after being walked in on, that she couldn't do it any longer. If Riley and Sam hadn't come, and Spike HADN'T been "The Doctor", I'm sure it would've continued several episodes longer.

Bangel's are accused of "ignoring" season 7, but that was a friendship, not a relationship. I thought they made great friends, it really made me happy seeing them so close. I think it should've been that way, in the beginning. Him being there for her in the way he was in season 7, not sleeping with her.

They were defintely more than just friends. 😀 That was actual love, and good love is love where there is a strong friendship, too. One reason I don't like Bangel is because they weren't friends, and as said in Lovers Walk, they'd never be friends.

As I've said before, there were a million hints showing that Buffy loved him as more than a friend.

- In Dirty Girls she was completely jealous when she saw Spike and Faith together
- The way she would sleep (literally) with him (Touched/ Chosen) As Joss said, "their relationship had enough trust in it that it was physical and romantic, but not sexual." Most just FRIENDS aren't physical and romantic with each other, are they?
- In S8, saying she missed the sex they had, and her nurse- dream. I doubt that she would only like him as more than a friend AFTER he left.

And there are tons more. 🙂

IMO, he took advantage of her because he wanted her and she hated herself.

I don't think that we can blame Spike for Buffy's choices. In all cases, she initiated the contact, not Spike. Spike merely gave her what she wanted.

And in Gone, he DID tell her to leave if there wasn't any love in the relationship.

It's funny, (stereotypically) it seems that Buffy and Spike switched genders in S6. Spike wanted to talk about their relationship ("Can we talk?" "Vocal chords wise, yes. With each other, no." "We have to talk." -Tabula Rasa), analyze it, and have more than just sex. He wanted a REAL relationship, with love and friendship to boot. And then we have Buffy, who wanted to pretend nothing happened and preferred one night stands.
Watch the scene with Buffy and Tara in Dead Things and that will tell you why I'm not a Spuffy. She's literally sobbing because she hates herself and what she's done with Spike.

But it's not really fair to judge an entire relationship on one season that's not even the real Spuffy season. S6 was the finding themselves with others Season, S7 was the Spuffy love season.

First off, "Unlike Angel"?!? Unlike Angel what?

I mean that Spike was completely good when he had a soul, whereas Angel was still a bit sketchy. When Spike had a soul, he never hit Buffy. Angel hit her twice. Spike never bit/ sired anyone, Angel sired the sailor in Why We Fight and killed Drogyn. Sure, it was for the greater good, but it's still essentially wrong. Also, Spike never mind- raped anybody, whereas Angel did several times. (I Will Remember You, the whole Connor thing...)

Second of all, whenever the the topic of the attempted rape is brought up Spuffies clamour over themselves to tell us all he was soulless so it doesn't count. Ok, but then when Spike does good deeds sans soul you all rush even faster to say it is testament to what a unique vampire he is and his capacity for humanity is beautiful.

Sorry, I meant that I had a WHOLE BUNCH of reasons for why Spike wasn't entirely at blame, but the soulless thing was just the quickest to say. And I don't rush to say how unique and humane Spike is, at least I don't think I do. 😀 When I talk about the Spuffy relationship, I prefer to discuss S7 and occasionally the build- up needed to get there, but I like to stay more on the two of them as a team, a couple, rather then the two of them separately.

Anyway, as for the AR, here's my analysis from my thread Spuffy: Season 6 Style (Spuffy: S6 Style - Buffy-Boards)

Skipping forward a bit, I must come to rest on the attempted rape in Seeing Red. IMO, that was an unfortunate misreading of signals. Spike, after seeing Buffy's hurt and jealous reaction to Spikes time with Anya, assumed that she still wanted him, but needed him to initiate it this time. He didn't understand that their relationship had boundaries. Although we often forget, Spike in this season was soulless. The soul (in the verse) is like a mental compass, a tool for determining and undertanding the thin line between right and wrong. Without his soul, Spike couldn't really begin to be able to understand the can/ should in their relationship. One could say that from not having a soul to having a soul is like the journey from a child to an adult, being specific towards adolescence. Even more specific, it's quite similar to the brain of a child going from concrete thinking to abstract thinking. In the beginning, they only can believe what they can see, but once they become abstract thinkers they can understand things that they CAN'T see.

Merely for support purposes, I would like to say that rapists rape for a feeling of power and control that they get from degrading others. Spike has specifically said many times that one of the things he loved most about her was her strength. I definitely do not see Spike trying to take her strength and power away from her. I'm not trying to excuse his actions, but he assumed that that was what she still wanted. Also, Spike is essentially a poet. Jane Espenson said "when he falls in love he has the heart of a poet". He's very romantic and loyal, definitely not the characteristics of a real rapist.

Continuing on, the Spuffy S6 sexual relationship WAS quite destructive, no doubt about that. Both sides were hurting each other greatly. One event that is quite similar to the AR, if not worse then the AR since it was an act made for a feeling a power and control, was the beating in Dead Things. Buffy beat the crap out of Spike, put all her weight and pain on him instead. Buffy also actually raped him in Gone. Not attempted rape, but rape. Spike told her he didn't want to have sex with her if there wasn't any love in the relationship. He told her to get dressed and leave if he couldn't have all of her (body AND soul) and what did she do? She sexed him anyway. That constitutes as rape.

This is slightly off- topic, but there are many reasons that we often dismiss Buffy's actions, but hold Spike responsible for everything he does, even though he's soulless. Reason 1, the show is from Buffy's perspective, which means that since Buffy thinks that she's right and he's wrong, we're bound to feel the same. 2, in the show, Buffy is seen as the protagonist, and Spike is portrayed as the antagonist, which generally makes anything the protangonist does "for the greater good." 3, Sex. Or gender, however you want to say it. Buffy's a woman, and Spike's a man. Although it sounds sexist, by nature it's natural for primates like humans to regard women as the lesser sex in terms of power, which makes the actions of a female much more justifiable than that of a male. We often forget that in this show, the women, more specifically Buffy, are the ones with the power. Nobody has EVER defeated Buffy before.

Moving forward again, we all know how Spike reacted to his actions. He got a soul, and they ALMOST got their "happily ever after."

Fair enough point but Spike has also never been in a position when he has needed to do things that were wrong. Spike doesn't have to make world in peril decisions, so he doesn't have the oppertunity to get these things wrong. Spike doesn't have lives resting on his shoulders. Both Buffy and Angel have made choices that have been sketchy at best and they have all been for the mission. While Spike is there fighting the good fight, he has never been a leader and so has never had to choose between doing what is morally right and doing what he know's is wrong but necessary.

Spike has only had his soul for a couple years, he will make mistakes, he will get it wrong. He carries a human soul, he cannot help but be fallible eventually.

Sorry, I meant that I had a WHOLE BUNCH of reasons for why Spike wasn't entirely at blame, but the soulless thing was just the quickest to say. And I don't rush to say how unique and humane Spike is, at least I don't think I do. 😀

Personally, I don't know how he can't not be at blame for this but I suppose we'll agree to disagree.

I cannot believe the spuffy love so many ill guided fans such a shame.

I agree. I have to admit before I came here I never saw them as a couple. In season 6 they were something so disgusting. And in season 7 I saw only a strong friendship. Like Buffy said to Angel when he asked her if she loves Spike, she said he is in her heart. A lot of male persons are in my heart but I don't love them in that way. I would like some kind of explenation, another episode or something for that last "I love you", because I don't understand it, and I would like.

Joss WROTE the show, therefore what he said was true. Something isn't going to stop being canon just because you don't agree with it. 😀 Although I will say that it's hard to believe that he was actually in love with her, considering he didn't know her, but what Joss says is true I guess. 🙂

I realize this, but I take this quote from him very literally: "Trust the tale, not the teller." As a writer, it's so easy to go back and put something in. I really don't think that if Spike & Buffy ended up sleeping together or anything of the like it would've been said that Spike loved her back then.

Uh, no... I've never heard of THAT argument before. Spuffy isn't about what Angel(us) did or did not do in comparison to Spike. It's about what Spike and Buffy had.

I always hear the "Spike loved her with & without a soul" argument, which is what I was referring to.

Exactly. They were both still developing into the people they were going to be. And that's another thing I find annoying about Bangel. They spent their entire relationship talking about how they could never be together, instead of actually enjoying their time together. Quite honestly I find it to be quite a drag, I always skip forward. 🙂

At first it was rocky, yes, but there were perfect reasons for that. Buffy didn't think it would work because Angel was barely around. When she found out he was a vampire, she felt bad for having feelings because she was a Vampire Slayer. They eventually decided to pursue a relationship anyway. They're plenty of Bangel moments where they're just enjoying being together.

I didn't mean they started out that way when they met. I was explaining how I seen their relationship begin.

This just proves that everyone has different perceptions of their relationship. I saw nothing good in it. From my point of view, it just looked bad for both of them.

She already knew she was using him, atleast I think so. She just didn't care. If she did, I don't think she would've began the relationship.

They were defintely more than just friends. 😀 That was actual love, and good love is love where there is a strong friendship, too. One reason I don't like Bangel is because they weren't friends, and as said in Lovers Walk, they'd never be friends.

Again the whole 'perceptions' thing comes into play. I don't see anything 'romantic' about their S7 friendship. Yes, I do believe she loves him but I think she loves him the way she loves Xander and Willow.

I don't think that we can blame Spike for Buffy's choices. In all cases, she initiated the contact, not Spike. Spike merely gave her what she wanted.

And then we have Buffy, who wanted to pretend nothing happened and preferred one night stands.

I'm not trying to blame Spike. It reminds me of Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. Buffy was all over Xander, but Xander didn't 'take advantage of her' because he knew she didn't really want to be with him. To me that's very similar to Spuffy. Only instead Spike did 'take advantage of her' because he loved her and he wanted her.

But it's not really fair to judge an entire relationship on one season that's not even the real Spuffy season. S6 was the finding themselves with others Season, S7 was the Spuffy love season.

Buffy & Spike weren't dating in S7. They weren't together. We can both argue about them being in love, but we both know they were not seeing each other.

See, that's where perception and interpretation come in. I never saw their S6 relationship as a real testament to what Spike and Buffy could have. They were both just in such dark places that they couldn't even be nice to themselves, let alone each other. At first when everything started, I was like, "Yes! Spuffy at last!" But then I hated what it turned into, and I didn't think it was a true representation of their possibilities as a couple.

Spike has been shown to be able to be good, and with encouragement from Buffy, even friendship, I think he could have found a way to be better. But once the sex started, they were both just too selfish and needy to see what it was doing to them. Spike needed more time to adjust to being the "good guy," and Buffy needed time to recover from being pulled out of Heaven.

You might not be trying, but you definitely are. And I understand what you're saying to a point, but I guess I will always sympathize more with Spike, which will always put me on the opposite side of this argument. But Spike loved Buffy. He completely, painfully, wholly loved Buffy. And when the love of his life is throwing herself at him, quite literally, I guess I can't quite blame him for accepting. I blame him for actively pursuing her later, and for trying to convince her she's dark like him--those were definitely terrible things. But I just can't see Buffy as the helpless victim in this situation. She knew what she was doing, depression or no, and she hurt Spike just as much as he hurt her.

Wow, that's a first. Blaming for future actions?

Wow, that's a first. Blaming for future actions?

No, just keeping things in perspective. We were talking about Spike in relation to Angel and WO said that Spike was totally good. There is no such thing as totally good, the time will arise when he will make mistakes. That isn't an attack on his character but a simple fact. There isn't a person on this planet who hasn't made a mistake. I sincerely doubt Spike is going to break that trend.

I noticed in the first post, something that you stated, do we always stray far, far off topic? Couldn't help wondering though, what shoes would Buffy have worn with the purple outfit?
People straying off topic? never!

Damn you woman! The first time I tackle the Spuffy debate in months and you agree with most of my points! lol 😛

My entire problem with Spuffy lies with season 6 and THAT being romanticised when in reality is was entirely bleak and cruel, for both parties involved.

I can I ask though, how to you reconcile with Spuffy season 6? From what you've written I get the impression that you don't like it all that much? Is Spuffy to you Spike and Buffy in S7?

E
Eleftheria
exactly my point about season 6...
There is one thing I will always wonder about Spike. Although I love him as a character, I like him when he is evil, I like the sarcasm and in season 5 I really loved the fact he was the first to raise his hand and follow Angel in Power Play.

The Initiative put a chip in his head. So the whole "helping the Scoobies" thing was the result of him being "defanged". As soon as he realises he can actually hurt demons but not people this gives him the chance to be a "bloody animal" again!(btw I really liked that quote and I actually laughed). Spike cares about fighting, he has fun because of it. I don't think he cares about who he kills but mostly he enjoys the killing. That's what I get from season 4 of Buffy. I can't see how he came to "love" the Slayer. That's why I insist his feelings for her were the result of an obsession. He couldn't kill her or hurt her, so he became obsessed with her. The last choice was to have a sexual relationship and hurt her verbally.

A "relationship" which starts this way can never be love. I am not saying Buffy is a saint either cause in season 6 she takes advantage of Spike's feelings for her and uses him as a toy. When he got a soul, spuffy was more like a strong friendship, since Spike could understand Buffy in a far deeper level her than friends could. Buffy said "I love you" but in my mind it will be more like"I love you as a friend and I thank you for all the things you have done". I don't think Spike loved her without a soul. He may have been horrified by his actions because he had a greater amount of humanity than a common soulless vamp does. That I accept.

I don't see how we should compare this to Bangel. Bangel is love. Two seemingly very different people who actually shared the same immatureness about love found (if you don't like the term soulmate) their other half, their truest love, the person they would give their life for. They never enjoyed hurting each other. There was no violent pleasuse there. Yes they were still growing as persons. But even after Angel left Sunnydale whenver they met I could see it in their eyes.

I believe that whenever Buffy sees Angel, she might be more like"ohhh there's Angel...Angeeeel let's kiss!!!"(I am trying to be a little humourous!)
It's not friendship,it's deep love that can never cease to exist.
I am trying to be a little humourous!

Hmmm, good question, Kean! I guess what I love about Spuffy is Spike's transformation because of it, so I probably view Season 5 as a better testament of what Spuffy could have been. That little scene at the end of Intervention, when she kisses him, and it's sweet and kind? Something more like that. And then of course, Spike saying, "I know you'll never love me. I know that I'm a monster, but you treat me like a man." It shows a profound change in him; being treated like a man is what he wants, not just her love.

Now, whether or not Buffy would have ever let herself love him without a soul, I'm not sure. It would depend on whether or not he really could have found a way to redeem himself without one.

Regardless, Season 6 played out the way it did, so I'll have to say that yes, Season 7 was more or less my vision for the couple. I didn't exactly see Spike with a soul, but the dependence and trust is what I love and wanted for both of them. He really came through for her, as he proved when he stayed with her after her own friends and family kicked her out of the house. Not to say her friends didn't love her, but Spike was the type of person who would stick by her no matter what. Remember that scene after she comes back in S6, where he's crying by the tree? And he says something like, "Willow knew she might have to get rid of what came back, and I wouldn't let her. Any part of that was Buffy, I wouldn't let her, and that's why she cut me out." Even if he thought she was wrong, he'd stand by her because that's the nature of his love.

Oh, dear, I think I rambled. I hope that sort of answered your question?

U

ramble is good, please continue
I just don't see how someone can consider Spuffy in season 6 like relathionship? God, Buffy hated him. Buffy hated herself. She probably hated everything that was around her. That was like friends with benefits. Just that benefits weren't benefits, they were something rough, and disgusting and really, really bad for her, and for him. She only gave him hope for something, she gave him part of herself that was keeping him warm, but she couldn't feel anything. She was empty inside. She didn't felt anything until the last episode of season 6. Then she realised she wants to live. I think she was ashamed of that thing they had. And just as Eleftheria I don't see how someone can compare that to Bangel. To the pure love. Do you guys feel anything when you watch them together? Some hope, something warm around your heart? No. Well then I feel sorry for you. Because I could never compare Spuffy and Bangel. I'm not even going to think about it. When she said to Spike that she loves him, for me, that was from the blue. I was like "Whaat?", and then her last words were "Spike", and I thought, should that mean something? I was scared, I was scared Spuffy is going to win. So when I'm rewatching Buffy I was first 3 seasons for 10 times, then other 4 for one time. I almost lost hope in the end. Because I have this curse that my fav couple never ends up together. And season 7, for me, it was Spuffy free. I'm blind on them.

Even if he thought she was wrong, he'd stand by her because that's the nature of his love.

Oh, dear, I think I rambled. I hope that sort of answered your question?

This is exactly whatI was looking for! Thanks hun 🙂

Just want to mention though, your last line...

Even if he thought she was wrong, he'd stand by her because that's the nature of his love.

I feel this is tarnished by the fact that he uses this to mess with Buffy's head and manipulate her.

I feel this is the main difference between Spike loving Buffy with a soul and without one. Without a soul Spike's love for Buffy is a selfish one. However, once he gains a soul it becomes selfless.

being beaten by Glory was also selfless
The last choice was to have a sexual relationship and hurt her verbally.!

I agree with you about the Initiative putting the chip in his head. After that, it was obvious he looked for sly ways to be evil; scams and playing on the Scoobies emotionally and even joining forces with Adam. And yes, he did enjoy violence and killing, and that was why he was so willing to fight demons. But I'm a little kinder to him, so I will say that Spike is a fighter, and it must have sucked to abruptly become so helpless and incapable. I think when he figured out he could fight again, it gave him back his masculinity, and that's part of the reason he was so excited about it. That's not excusing his love of violence or even saying that he didn't deserve the chip (in fact, I think it was the best thing that could have happened to him!), but I think it's more than, "He just wanted to kill things again."

And yes, I agree that his feelings started as an obsession, and a frightening one at that. But by the end of the season, I don't see how you can say he didn't love her. Just watch The Gift over again, and I think you can see his evolution. Especially when he sees her body and just breaks down. There is no fake or dark emotion in that breakdown, in my opinion. He really loved her, and his heart broke when he saw her dead. Plus, he stayed there and helped her friends fight, even though she was supposedly long gone. He had nothing to gain from it; he didn't know she was coming back. Those actions are very telling, I think.

I don't think Spike loved her without a soul. He may have been horrified by his actions because he had a greater amount of humanity than a common soulless vamp does. That I accept.

I don't see how you can accept that he feels guilt for his actions and has more humanity than other vampires, but you can't accept that he loves her. *Scratches head* That just kind of confounds me. Why is guilt a more believable emotion than love? I should think it would be easier for a vampire to love than to feel guilt for his or her actions.

I don't see how we should compare this to Bangel. Bangel is love.

Well, that's where opinion comes in, isn't it? To us Spuffies, Spuffy is love.

As for the S7 friendship/relationship.... well, I doubt Bangels and Spuffies will EVER agree on that. I'm not even gonna argue it. =P

I think in the end, too, those who love Spike are more aware of the changes in him. For example, he thinks he can hurt people again and he immediately goes to find a victim. Instead of just attacking her full-out, though, he has to talk himself into it. That's huge! A vampire who previously killed without thought is suddenly not entirely sure he wants to. Of course, if he had been able to, he probably would have killed that woman, and then I guess it wouldn't really matter one way or the other. That woman certainly isn't thinking, "Oh, well at least he didn't really want to." But still, Spike fans tend to catch those tiny instances of change, and we see them for what they are.

Another great one is when Dawn is talking about how she doesn't think she can be good because she's the key, and Spike reaches for her. It's not planned, or at least it doesn't look it; it's an instinctual need to comfort someone who is in pain. The way he jerks his hand back is telling, too, because it's obvious he's not sure why he feels the need to reach out to her. There are dozens more like that, and it's those actions that give Spike fans (or at least me) hope that he can overcome his evil nature.

Hmmm. I get your point with this. It was obvious that Spike could be selfless for Buffy, but not to Buffy. Once he got her, he just couldn't let her go, even when it was hurting her. I think he deluded himself into thinking he was what was best for her, which is why his selfish behavior went on for so long. I think he truly saw what he was doing to her in That Scene in Seeing Red, both at the time and in general. The look on his face when he finally snaps out of his craze is one of absolute horror.

Something obviously needed to change; he needed to find a conscience and a will to be good aside from winning Buffy's love. I think the soul was one way to do that, but I would have liked to see if there was another way. One, because the soul angle was a little played out to me, and two because it was way too easy to dismiss everything Spike had ever done. I would have liked to see the soulless vampire really set his sights on redemption, but I understand why the writers went the soul route. Without doing it, they would have even further broken their already cracked canon.

thanks to Marsters for that attack scene
There is one thing I will always wonder about Spike. Although I love him as a character, I like him when he is evil, I like the sarcasm and in season 5 I really loved the fact he was the first to raise his hand and follow Angel in Power Play.

But part of what makes Spike so loved is his development. The way he grew into a good person, his life journey. If he stayed exactly the same throught his seven years in the Buffyverse, he wouldn't have been a particularly interesting character.

The Initiative put a chip in his head. So the whole "helping the Scoobies" thing was the result of him being "defanged". As soon as he realises he can actually hurt demons but not people this gives him the chance to be a "bloody animal" again!(btw I really liked that quote and I actually laughed). Well... that's certainly an interesting view, I've never heard that one before. 😀 Anyway, I think you're making Spike out to be a tad more diabolical than he actually is. And there have been many hints as to his liking of her. To name a few, the scene in Who Are You and Superstar. In S5, it was fairly obvious that he loved her. He definitely wouldn't have gotten himself tortured by Glory just to protect her if he didn't. And you saw his reaction when he realized he was in love with her: He was horrified. If he thought that there was any chance it wasn't true, he would have taken it ("This, with you, it's wrong. I know it. I'm not a complete idiot. You think I like having you in here? Destroying everything that was me, 'til all that's left is you, in a dead shell." -Crush) And he didn't initiate the sexual contact, or even just the kissing. it was always Buffy. As Drew Greenberg said in the Smashed Commentary, "She was finally taking what she wanted, that she'd been afraid to admit that she wants it." As Drew also said, "these are two characters that interact differently than normal people". "Verbally abusing" her really wasn't much, since she did the same thing back, with a fair share of physical abusement. And Buffy said in Seeing Blue that she thinks "true love and passion have to go hand in hand with pain and fighting."

Well, Joss himself said that he loved her, so... 😀

OK, first off, I agree about the "immature love" thing. Second, in S7 Potential, Buffy said that "well, it depends. Sometimes that's how people relate. Being mean to each other. Even... mortal enemies. And then with the- And that leads to no good, absolutely no good. And then it's over, absolutely, positively, definitely over! And that's confusing too, the over part. Which it is, over!" Apparentally, Spike and Buffy relate (and probably have fun) by being mean to each other.

Next, to good solid facts that you will in no way be able to retaliate at 😀 :

In Buffy S8, it is shown (in canon) that Buffy loves both Spike and Angel EQUALLY.

In Angel S6, Angel himself said that his one true love was his son. Not Buffy, or Darla, or Cordelia. The person he loves more than anyone else is his son. 🙂

I believe that whenever Buffy sees Angel, she might be more like"ohhh there's Angel...Angeeeel let's kiss!!!"(I am trying to be a little humourous!)
It's not friendship,it's deep love that can never cease to exist.
I am trying to be a little humourous!

Again, different people have different opinions on love, but I for one don't believe that you can have a meaningful love without being friends. Think about Willow and Tara, or Xander and Anya, or Angel and Cordy, or Wes and Fred. They all had beautiful, strong relationships that lasted and made both people happy, and they were all best friends with their lovers.

But let's face it, the only time Buffy was ever happy with a lover was during the spell in Something Blue, with Spike. THAT'S what it really looks like to be in love. Buffy was happy, optimistic, playful, loving, and felt good about herself and trusting with Spike.

mmm Angel, like the 3 furies from AtS

Wow, are you anti-Spike. Alright, I'm going to try here, even though I know it won't do any good! =P

I feel something when I watch Bangel, so there's no need to feel sorry for me. They are first love. Beautiful, pure, dependent and aching--they're everything first love should be. But the thing about first love is that it ends. It always ends, and it leaves you always loving that person. They're special to you, they always will be, but it's in a romantic, idealistic kind of way. The love is always there, but it's in the past. They grew into such different people after that, and I just don't see them being able to meet and be on the same plane again.

It seems like you very willfully ignore everything about Spuffy, just because you seem to think it takes away from Bangel. There were beautiful moments there! Moments that warmed my heart and made me feel hopeful. And yes, those were Spuffy moments. "Every night I save you," "You're the one, Buffy," "I'd die, her being in that much pain," etc, etc, etc. There's love there, especially in Season 7! Accept it. =P
