Were you unhappy with Anya's death?

I think the quickness of Anya's death was really effective, cus what did you want to see her falling??? I think it was good because it was so shocking, and you didnt expect it, and the scene was pretty long, with Andrew in it aswell. Also unlike the others they didnt go back at the end to their body's but they did with Anya, so what you didnt see in the scene you saw then.

I wish Xander could of found her body and taken it out of the high school, but i guess that would of slowed things down.

Spike's death didnt make him seem whimpish at all, he sacrificed his own life for the world, and if he had died any other way he still would have dusted so the fact he went out with a BANG just made him more heroic than he was before. As Buffy said, he is a champion!

I loved Anya's actual death because you were not expecting it and it was really shocking, but I did not like the way her death was treated. We had a short but sweet emotional scene with Xander and Andrew, but You would think that Xander would have taken her death alot harder. I loved that little scene between them, but it wasn't realistic. He would have been distraught.

I'm yet another person who definitly did not like Anya having to die. *sniffles* It was horrible, but at least she came out a hero! That's something at least.

Anyas death was horrible. The first time i saw it, i didnt even know she was dead. the channel i watched it on cut the death scene. first you saw her raise the sword and the bringer somewhere behind her, then it was the next scene. then later when xander was looking for her and she was lying under the rubble, that was cut too. so i didnt know she was dead till andrew and xander had that conversation. so i didnt even know andrew had lied to xander about how she died, hence ruining the entire point of the conversation. which, besides anyas death, was that andrew had been making a pain in the neck of himself by lying throughout the entire season, but when it really mattered, he lied to help xander.

Hell yeah I was mad when Anya died. And then to make the matters worse Spike died. It was like a die-fest! And then one of my favorite potential slayers.

But at least she died saving Andrew's life that was pretty "heroic" RIP Anya.

I think it was another case of the "postmodern" syndrome to a degree. Joss likes to mix and match tones and themes, often simultaneously. Can lead to wierd, ineffective mush at times. Or infuriating mush.

I like that Anya died a noble death in battle. Makes the overall ending more poignant, emotional. And Xander did display a little bit of grief. But he was very stiff-upper-lippy. And in the very final pullaway shot, he and the rest of the Scoobs are making snarky, sarcastic jokes. Weird mix ot tones there. Undercuts the drama, but it's being true to the postmodern "mission statement" of the show.

No she didnt. Have you seen the uncut version? Andrew lied to Xander about that. A bringer snuck up behind her and sliced her in half. Nothing to do with Andrew. Andrew wanted Xander to remember her as a hero.

The channel I watched it on, cut it completely. I didnt know what happened til i got the DVD at Xmas.

I had to rewind the tape to make sure she died. She didn't save Andrew. I think the "heroic" aspect was the very fact that Anya was there, voluntarily. Is heroism merely your actions and the positive things that result? Or just your final commitment to goodness, your courage?

We also don't know if Team Angel ultimately accomplished anything in their final attack. But I'd argue they were heros for trying.

i get that. i just meant she didnt save andrew. but yeah, they are heros for being there. fighting the good fight.

We've discussed the whole did Anya save Andrew question a few times; the last time HERE

I've made kind of a study of that scene so I'll post my findings from that thread -

Naturally I had to dig out my old Chosen tape, blow the dust off it, and give it another view.

So I slipped it in the box, and fast-forwarded to the death of Anya scene, and oh my God, you three appeared to be correct. Anya was nowhere near Andrew. How could I be so daft? How could I think Anya saved Andrew?

But wait a minute. The truth is I'm not that daft. I might miss something on the first go around, but not on the third of fourth. I'd watched that whole fight scene frame by frame before, many times. Obviously I'd seen something then, that I was missing now.

I rewound the tape, and... hang on a sec. There's another part of the Anya/Andrew fight scene that occurs earlier.

I went through it frame by frame. This is what happens:

*

Anya and the dungeon master (Andrew) are guarding the north hall.

They are positioned at a 3-way corner, where 2 corridors meet.

Let's call the corridor that goes right to left, South to North. We'll call the other corridor that comes to meet it at a dead end East to West. It dead ends on the western side. The South to North Corridor goes straight through.

A&A stand in front of lockers along the north side of the E-W corridor. They face South.

Uber-vamps and Bringers come at them from the south up the South-North corridor.

Andrew ducks behind Anya, and turns South up the South to North corridor. He is stopped almost immediately by a bringer and points his sword at him. He tells the Bringer he has swimmer's ear.

Anya battles 2 uber-vamps. One is on her south side, the other on her north.

She slices off the head of the one to the South. He dusts, and she turns to face the one to the North, on the side where Andrew and the 2 bringers are. Bringers start to sneak up the East to West Corridor from behind Anya.

OK at this point we have to fast forward up to the next part of the Anya/Andrew battle scene.

This scene shows us what is happening to Andrew as Anya is fighting the uber-vamps.

The first bringer maneuvres past Andrews sword. He is unarmed. He pins Andrew against the wall facing east. Andrew Falls down to his butt, and lowers his head into a kind of foetal position.

Another Bringer lifts a knife into a stabbing pose.

He is standing on the South side of Andrew, just before where the South-North, and East-West corridors meet.

Andrew is on his North. Anya is to his South.

OK now let's rewind back to the scene we left prematurely. I'll show you what happens next, and how Anya saves Andrew.

When last we saw Anya she had dusted the ube to her South, and was now facing the one to her North. Further North was Andrew.

Anya dusts the vampire on her Southern side. She then lifts the sword abover her head, and (drum-roll please) strikes down at something beyond the corner. It's right about at the exact spot where the Bringer would be that is about to stab Andrew. Anya saves Andrew.

OK, so why did Joss say he wanted to give Anya an un-heroic end?

First of all he didn't just say it on the DVD. He's said it in interviews. If you do a board search on Death of Anya, you'll find people talking about it.

But back to it. I'm a fond beleiver in the "Joss is God when it to the Buffyverse" school. What he says goes, but here's the thing. God is tricky.

Joss is just as fond of putting hidden stuff in his interviews, and it would seem his DVD commentaries, as he is in his scripts. He's as quick with it as Tara is at hiding the demon seeking powder under the bed.

I could give you examples, but we'd wind up arguing about stuff that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Here's one that hasn't happened yet though, just to give you a taste of what I'm talking about.

Joss has said in at least 2 spots I can think of off the top of my head that Gunn dies in the alley after Not Fade Away. Once he almost appeared to be joking when he said it. The other time he appeared to be serious.

Here's the thing though. Knowing that, are you prepared to bet either way that Gunn is either dead or alive should a follow-up ever appear on the horizon to Not Fade Away. Would you bet money there's not going to be a curve-ball such as Gunn's a vampire?

So yeah Joss is God, and I believe everything he says, but it's a matter of interpretation. Anya is given an un-heroic end. That's the one you three saw, but if you go back and view both scenes frame by frame, you'll see Anya also dies a hero. She saved Andrew.

I admit in order to see the two scenes this way you have to see the time sequence as being slightly out of whack. You have to see the second scene of Andrew cowering on the floor as a kind of flashback, but what's the alternative?

The Bringer is bringing his knife down to kill Andrew. If nothing stopped him, what happened? Did the whistle blow for lunch?

Anya definitely steps around that corner with her sword above her head to strike at something right about at the same spot where the Bringers are attacking Andrew. In fact even if she didn't kill the Bringer in the second scene, she was still attacking something that was after Andrew.

Also if you put both scenes together it had to have happened pretty much the way I described it, with Anya stepping backwards later into the centre of the hall. So what makes more sense? A tricky flashback, time sequence change, or we didn't see a Bringer about to kill Andrew, and Anya about to strike something at that spot. Because I definitely saw those two things.

Interesting. I saw the episodes as they were aired in the US [I live in sweden so you can all just imagine how I saw them without me mentioning it] and I'm pretty sure it wasn't cut.

Now I never saw Anya's death as a result of her saving Andrew. I took Andrew's comment regarding her death as I take all his comments; with some reservations.

I live in UK and theyre pretty bad at cutting buffy. when i got the DVDs, i was amazed at what was in some of the episodes. For example in season 6 when Willow killed Warren. you never saw his skin rip off.

Well, that's interesting. I'll have to replace my crappy, busted VCR and watch again. Or actually buy season 7 on DVD.

How could you not have realized she died? She was split in half! Thats one of the reasons I liked her death. And becuase she went out fighting. I had mixed emotions on Anya. sometimes I liked her and sometimes I didnt. But it wasnt untill she died that I completely liked her, and it stayed that way.

Why not kill faith/principal wood they where semi-important scoobs or why didn't riley come back and die instead, i just dont except the anya had to die excuse!

Joss Whedon stated in the commentary that he wanted a middle-of-the-battle death, a death that had no meaning to contrast with Spike's death which was perfect and noble. He knew he couldn't kill one of the core-four (Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles) or Dawn and have it be a "happy ending." Apparently, Emma Caulfield said she was ready to move on, so Anya got the nod.

Of course, after going to all the trouble to make Anya's death so brutal and meaningless, the writer in Joss couldn't let it go and Andrew came up with the story that Anya died saving his life.
