Why does everyone like Fred so much?

In reaction to the similar themed thread about Illyria, here's another question: Why does everyone like Fred so much?!
I don't really understand it. Granted, she's witty and cute and all, but she's so, I dunno, she's not special or mysterious, and still I can't identify with her. I just feel nothing at all with her. Not even poisonous hatred (as with, say, Dawn. Just kidding. I don't hate her that much ^^) I guess it's not Amy's fault in the sense that she plays her badly, there's just something wrong, in my opinion, with the way her character was written.
Now I have to say, I haven't watch all Angel episodes yet, so maybe she will have to dawn on me, but I have seen quite a lot episodes with her already
I have no intention in starting some sort of flame war, I'm just curious why you all like her so much. Cos I haven't really gotten it, tbh 😉

I'm with you - I found her too sweet it was cloying most of the time. Other than that she could have been interesting, I liked it when she was occaisonally a bit sassier. All this 'aw shucks' stuff bored me to tears...
Fred is my fave character sure some people cannot get or relate to her. When I watch her character develop it makes me feel full of pride because she went from a meek, scared girl to a strong, brave hero. Shes cooky and smart , also she offers alot to the A,I ,shes just the piece of calm that helps them stick together . Also she has some great ideas 😀
 
Take one of the (to my taste at least) most beautiful actresses in the Buffyverse and have her play a shy, insecure, mildly crazy and mindnumbingly intelligent woman, and you get a character this Mystic has to struggle hard not falling obsessively in love with. 😉

Can you tell I like Fred? 😉

I was always more interested in her and Wesley than Angel himself. I'm not really sure why I liked her so much but ever since she came back with the guys to the hotel, I was hoping that she'd stay. I was so happy when I saw her in the credits!

Me too! Additionally I knew when she left with her parents it wouldn't last.
I like Fred. She's nice and sweet and balances the group out, I feel. I loved her and Gunn together. Granted, she was irritating in the beginning, but then she grew on me. My mother though, is not a huge fan of her. We've talked about it, and her main reason is she thinks Fred is "whiny and ultra-feminine". So yeah. Whatever that means.

I was pretty bummed when she died. I think it's pretty shitty that, in the end, none of the women survived. Only the men and the demons (Well, and Illyria). Like Hamilton said, Angel failed all the women in his life...

^ I agree that she balances the cast, and I think it's because when she showed up, everyone had become really somber. Cordy was sent to L.A. to balance Angel's mopiness, but she had a lot she was dealing with, so we didn't see that huge smile as much anymore. Besides which, there were a LOT of guys. Amy helped add some sunshine and much-needed estrogen.
 
I DESPISED Fred...not as much as Illyria...but Fred irritated the hell out of me.

What was her purpose? She was just a female, more socially awkward version of Wesley...and she served the exact same function...being a big nerd who could read books and do science.

It seemed to me she was brought on simply because the show wasn't fulfilling its "love and relationship" quota so they needed to bring in a new female character since it wouldn't have been realistic to have Cordelia start shagging everyone. I think Fred was there ONLY for the Wesley/Gunn/Fred love triangle. I thought she was useless and irritating, and I resent that Cordelia was killed instead of her.

Well, Fred died too.
I don't really know why actually. She just idk... has "it". That thing tha drags me in. Plus, she's so cute ans sweet!
 
I simply don't get why anyone would NOT like Fred. She. Is. AWESOME! Her death was one of the toughest for me to handle, and it was only helped by the fact that Amy Acker - who is equally as awesome - was still on the show.

I thought Fred an intersting character, especially as she developed so much from being that scared little poor thingy, to becoming a leading scientist of Angel Investigations. In a way though I see why you can see why she is annoying or at least not that great a character. At least for me, I though it a bit odd, that she was first into Angel, then into Gunn and then Wesley. But, she contributed a lot to the story and was cute and everything so I won't be too hard on her.
 
I think she is liked so much because shes the "Willow" of Angel.
That shy, cute female character that has many opportunities to explore with.
The evolution of their personality and lala.

Plus, shes damn hot as well.

I agree with her being the Willow of Angel, I fell in love with her at the start, I loved how kooky and crazy she was. She brought alot of life and spunk into the show. And even though she became alot blander as the show went on there was still the 'love at first sight' thing going on, I also loved when the spotlight was put on her, especially at the end of Season 4.

Fred is the Underdog, the survivor and that is always a powerful tool in literature and film. Compare Fred to Cordy. I like both characters for different reasons but we tend to relate to the character that is like us. So ask yourself - you wake up in a strange land in a different dimension.

Do you.......?

A. hide in a cave, try to make tortillas from tree bark and end up a cow-slave..... ?

Or

B. become King / Queen of the place?

My luck tends to run to the Fred side of things. So we relate more to her. We see our own struggles in hers.

Of course they wrote Fred that way and most people reacted to her accordingly. Then they killed her. That's how it works in the Buffyverse.

Fred for me, was an ok character, very pretty, but npthing special overall(compared to say... LINDSEY). Her shining moment was in the Pylea arc, after that she was just.... average, like wes, and cordy, and gunn, and illyria, and angel........

I don't know about you, Uncle Rory, but I'd most definitely end up the queen of the place...

Well I'd even go so far as to say that Willow was more annoying that Fred.. Alyson's kinda poorish acting and Willow's constant frickin annoying stutter/word fumble mess and her overall never fully ending meak behavior, is just so BLAH! That being said I really like Willow, or at least I don't mind her. She doesn't bring anything overly special to the show, minus her helpful magic.

Now Fred, I think is a million times funnier than her and Angel really benefitted from her presence. As we can all see there are more Fred lovers than haters so obviously they were doing something right. I really did find it slightly irritating when she first got back to the hotel it seemed like it took forever for her to grow into the Fred we all know and love.
