Discussion of 6.07 "Once More, With Feeling" - Aired 11/6/01 (UPN-US)

I just rewatched this episode, and I can't get over how good it is. I can excuse the lame "Xander did it" thing because the songs are so catchy and filled with emotion, and the character/plot development is brilliant. I've never watched the commentary or behind-the-scenes, so I should do that. 🙂

I love this episode!!! i think it was a great idea for the show, and the story was brilliant as well. by that point the character's were all hiding feelings from each other, feelings they felt they could never share. i loved that the feelings all came out in the songs and music, especially when buffy finally tells everyone she was at peace. I just think it came together and worked really well.

I love this episode!

I think "Something to Sing About" is my favourite... such a dramatic way for the gang to find out the truth about where Buffy was. SMG's acting is perfect here, the way she looks so desperate and hopeless as everyone else is just in shock.

I completely agree, such a beautiful song & I usually can't stand musicals!
However, I hate the way "whistle while you work" & "knowing that it ends" sound so rushed, was it like a creative thingy? Cause I don't get it ..

This is absolutely my favorite episode of the series. Usually when tv shows do musicals they turn out more cheesy than anything else, but I really feel that they did an excellent job with this episode and with revealing all the secrets that the characters had been hiding from each other.

I have one question that I have not seen addressed anywhere else:

In the very beginning, when Buffy is singing "Going Through the Motions," who sings the lines "She's not even half the girl she... ow" and "How can I repay..." that the demon and the rescued guy sing, respectively? Were these two people using their own voices? Thoughts?

I have watched this episode more than any other. I have the script from the defunct twiztv site bookmarked (it's available on the wayback machine) and the program list from twiztv as a second bookmark (all scripts for Buffy, Angel, Firefly and six scripts from Dollhouse).

This is the best episode of the best TV show ever. Second best is Not Fade Away on Angel.

I've always thought that Giles' "Standing" is a thought, not a declaration, and therefore it cannot be heard by Buffy. Spike's "Rest in Peace" is being told to Buffy. Giles is only coming to the realization right then and there that he's standing in her way, so naturally he is only thinking it at this point, not yet saying it. Which he does in a future episode. Both songs, but one's an internal monologue, while the other is an external declaration.

I love this episode, but there is one loose end that I have not figured out: when does Xander summon the demon? I thought the demon came because Dawn had his talisman that she stole from The Magic Box. Was it in another episode?

I love this episode, definitely one of my favourite ! I love everything, story, music, dances, songs...
My favourites are I've got a theory, going throught the motion, Walk throught the fire, Rest in peace.
Maybe you know that this ep was totally dubbed in French and it was a disaster!!!!!!! So the first time I saw it (on french tv), I hated it but then, changed quickly my mind !

Oh and I also love Anya and Alex's song.

We didn't see him do it. It happened offscreen, presumably the day prior to the first scene of OMWF. The fact that Dawn sees and steals the Talisman is just a coincidence.

It's not a loose end. The scene where Xander admits it was he who summoned the demon is the first we know of it.

that was my thought about it too
I adore this episode, like everyone else of the fandom I believe lol I love this ep so much that I listen to the soundtrack about once a day!

About Giles singing Standing, I always thought it was very fitting that Buffy could`t hear you, since the song is about how she thinks Giles can fix everything but she never truly listens to him. Buffy just doesn`t pay attention to what he has to say anymore, she just likes that he`s there to fix things for her.

It makes to sad to say it, but you're right about Giles and Buffy
I recently rewatched this single episode, which I tend not to do. The musical feels kinda special though. It really is a perfect piece of television, that anyone can watch, but that's also so tied into the story of the season, it's a turning point.

It pretty much started a trend of tv musicals too!

It's definitely in my top 3 favorite episodes, I'm getting close to knowing all the songs by heart haha, such a fun episode to watch and sing along too

weird thing about that episode. My two favorite verses in the whole musical had to do with buffy dying. Lol

first is when they are singing I Have A Theory and they say:

we have to try
we'll pay the price
it's do or die
hey i've died twice

second is when Spike is singing part of Walk Through The Fire and says:

this torch I bear is scorchin me
and Buffy's laughin I've no doubt
I hope she fries. I'm free if that b**** dies
I'd better help her out.

funniest parts of the episode to me. I laugh everytime. But weird how both involve Buffy's death...........😱

Probably my favourite verses as well but I love most of Spike's singing and of course Anya's "I've got a theory, it could be Bunnies...Bunnies aren't cute like everyone supposes, they've got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses and whats with all the carrots, what do they need such good eyesight for anyway! Bunnies, Bunnies, it must be Bunnies! infact thinking about it I love pretty much all the songs involved, well...Buffy when she get slow and sings about heaven is kind of grinding on the ears but otherwise love it!

I rewatched this episode too last night! I love it!
I especially like I have a Theory and Xander + Anya's song and dance, and I'll walk through the fire, Life is a show at the end!! I'm under the Spell is also awesome!!
The actors have beautiful voices! I always tear up whn Buffy sings "there was no pain, no fear no doubt till they pulled me out ...of heaven.."

This was an interesting episode, everyone performed really well but Spike and Giles by far had the best solo numbers, such great lyrics. Anthony Stewart Head's voice is just amazing! Is he a singer in RL? He needs to be if not.
Also, as a bonus I love how shocked my mom was when she asked what I was watching and I answered that it was Buffy! She's seen the show but I am not sure if she's ever finished it, I only know she finished Angel.

Anthony got his start in musicals, playing Jesus in Godspell on stage. Then he went on to play the American in Chess (a role his brother had played earlier), and Dr. Frank n Furter in The Rocky Horror Show on stage. He released four songs in the eighties with a group called Two Way; and had his own album (Music for Elevators) out a few years ago. He is working on a second album right now. He was also in the musical Repo Man. So, yeah, he's a singer on RL but it's secondary to his acting. 🙂

I did a medley of songs from OMWF on YouTube, singing all the parts. Thought I would post it here for your enjoyment:
