Feminist reboot of Charmed

It was through all of these plots that I learned that Alyssa Milano is a terrible onscreen kisser. She looks like she's trying to eat the guys' faces. It's quite off-putting.
This is hysterical. I now wish I had watched a bit more, even if it was just enough to see what you mean!

I only watched a handful of episodes, so all the politics about which cast members were evil (not characters, but the actors playing them) is something I came to second hand -- none of it made me want to watch. It just seemed utterly vapid and mind vacant and girly and it made me nauseated to watch that much estrogen-sugar for more than a few minutes, so I rapidly lost whatever (small) interest I'd had in watching. I'm female. Apparently just not that female... or something.

I think most people who are against feminism don't really understand what it really is. And no, I have very little use for 'agenda' people -- ANY side. Very tiresome.

I really would be happy for an egalitarian treatment of females in TV where they can follow their dreams equally and their interests are not ONLY getting a man and looking pretty. Most of us (heterosexual, anyway) would like a partner. Few people don't want to look their best, but too many of the women who I see on TV are way too often NOT me. They're too perfect, too shallow and too focused on performing femininity for the sake of impressing other women, vanquishing other women and getting the 'best' man (richest, prettiest, most servile (and least manly, IMO) who will do their bidding.) I don't know ANY women like this. And the older women on TV? They're often too shrill and too mean spirited, especially if they're successful or talented at anything.

It is why I love Buffy so much. I don't think she or the other women are unattractive or hate men... but there are other things too. Life is big.

Haha totally agree on anything!
So you are over women and men being equal ?!?😕

Men and women aren't equal, sweetie.

Seriously, if you were trapped in a burning house, pinned beneath a heavy refrigerator, who would you want to save you? A 110 pound chick, or a muscular dude weighing 250 pounds? I mean, would you say, "No, I'm a feminist and I want the girl to help me...even though she couldn't pick up a dictionary without breaking her back. Go away, strong man! I'm into girl power! Even if I end up looking like a tiki to torch, I refuse your manly help!" 😛

Sorry, hon, women are way superior to men in physical capacity. It's why we live longer, bear the children and tend to be in better health most of our lives. We don't have RAW power that men have, but we are in NO way less. We have different and complementary strengths.

And as a former first responder? I want the person with the guts and the other right stuff to rescue me. Seldom is raw strength the only criteria in an emergency. The prize (and the life saved) goes to the person with the right temperament, who thinks on his/her feet and also (chance) is in the right place at the right time. So, no, burly man? Not the only thing that does it. Most times when beams come down in houses? If there isn't a TEAM of people to move it, it isn't moving. Oh and in the physical endurance thing... look up ultra marathon... Women have won it outright... and when you consider that there are more men competing, and more men in athletics from childhood, that should be taken into account when you decide women are inferior in strength and performance... performance is NOT one thing.

There's also common sense. I have no problems with the burly man. 😀 He has his uses. He's just not 'better' than me because he has bigger muscles... Incidentally, there was a time when I could lift a 200lb person pretty easily. I'm 5'6" Women are often not strong b/c they are untrained and they don't think they can do what they can do. 150lb woman can do most of what a 150lb man can do. As long as she's fit and prepared. Women actually have the potential to be stronger in the lower body than a man of comparable size. No, they will not be as bulky.

Oh, and most men at 250lbs aren't 250lbs of muscle. Most men at 250lbs are 250lbs of heart attack waiting to happen.

In a fire, sometimes the person who can do the rescue, is the person small enough to crawl inside the space where the kid is trapped... guess who is likely to be the small person who can crawl under and between the fallen debris? Guess who uses air in their tank slower b/c their lungs are smaller?

Don't be sorry, sweet cheeks. We just disagree here. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'd choose the big guy to save me over a pregnant woman. It would be quite upsetting if her water broke while trying to help me. 😛

Yes, yes, women can be strong, and we live longer...however, we aren't equal to men. (Though we ARE smarter) And while I appreciate your Gloria Steinem-flavoured post, I'm just not into the whole, "We are women, hear us roar!" stuff. On that note, the recent women's march gave me some serious giggles. What was the point? Come on now. I'm a woman, and all I could think was, "Uh...okay. Do they feel empowered now?" Psht.

This has gone way off-topic, so I'm done here. 😉

Men and women have different strengths and weaknesses that compliment each other. The feminism that I've seen tends to forget this a lot of the time, except when women are 'better' than men at something, and then they can't stop crowing about it. It comes across more like insecurity than empowerment.

You said it way better than I did.
I'm not in the 'we are woman hear me roar' crowd. I'm in the 'responded to enough emergencies to know who I want having my back crowd'. You and I don't disagree. You are simply incorrect in your assumptions, which seem to be based on ideology, not actual science. You don't know what you're talking about, I'm very sorry if this hurts your feelings. You believe women are inferior. I know we're not. I don't think I'm better b/c I live longer, can bear children & can handle food deprivation longer; but I do know that women have a lot of physical advantages (and quite a few genetic ones too) over men.

Raw strength is not everything. Maybe it was back in the ages when there were no machines, no wheels, no levers... no mind applied to problems... but, no, even then; power wasn't enough. If it were, large creatures such as elephants would run the world, instead of having been used as tools for human advance for thousands of years.

The reason humans are the top of the food chain is our brain, not our brawn.

It's very likely the ONLY reason, b/c there are a lot of animals stronger and faster and bigger than us. They are, however, mentally our inferiors... and we are in charge.

Brawn has plenty of uses, but it does NOTHING to make one even marginally superior.

What I have seen in men who are large is that they are often overconfident, and easily defeated in a fight, because they assume they are superior. Smaller men are often much, much better at the job than large ones. They're often more agile, less likely to have heart problems and have more efficient physiology. And like women, they know they have to figure out something besides raw power to be better at their jobs.

Yes, a locomotive versus a car, locomotive wins... but a car goes places a locomotive cannot. One is not better than the other b/c one can obliterate the other.

I don't have contempt for physically strong men, but the handful of times they're the best person for the job doesn't make them 'superior' beings.

Just admit you want to see the big sweaty dude's glistening pecs and bulging biceps as he carries you out of the house.

Perhaps you're reading the wrong feminist literature. Maybe women need to remind each other of our power b/c society is still run for and by men... or men like that doctor Larry Nasser wouldn't get away with abusing hundreds of little girls for twenty years, and when the girls complained EVERYONE believed the MAN. Just as people who've been raped get disbelieved from time immemorial... It can make a girl a little bit irritable... Apparently, in order to be heard and believed there must be 200 of us to the ONE abuser who was doing it (and being complained about to adults for the entire time)

So, yes, women on the whole feel a great insecurity in the world. Even when we are world class (some of these women are gold medalists) no one thinks our voices count. And most of those women can do things very few men can do... (or other women) Ability doesn't count often enough for us. Most of the time, it's simply the 'lack' of external genitals that counts for how we're viewed, how much we're paid and whether we're even considered reliable witnesses when a crime is committed against us or our children. So, if some women get really hostile, maybe that is why. I personally love men and know that most men are really great people just like most women and some women are horrible people just like some men.

BUT in the real world, I expect to be paid less for the same level of work and the same (or even superior experience and qualifications), heard less and judged for my appearance more, no matter what I can do, no matter how well i can do it. Even in female dominated professions such as nursing and teaching men get paid more & get promoted faster.

Well, that depends entirely on the weight, not the gender. There are men who weigh 110 pounds too, after all.

Anyway... Do we really need a 'Charmed' revival? The original show already lost all steam by season 5. Let it stay dead, and come up with something new already. Or at least revive something that's actually WORTHY of being revived, like 'Firefly'.

What is the point of waiting here if the reply is halfway down the page, or maybe you were just being nice?
So the original Charmed was more like a real soap opera then? Wonder if they will make the reboot more 'serious'

I do find modern feminism outdated and problematic. Then again I can see why it still exists when you see crazy shit like men still being paid more for doing the same job and whose currently in the Whitehouse.

The problem with feminist TV is it feels too much like a label. Its too restrictive too. Whenever you have a well written female character it should be praised because its a good character. Gender should have nothing to do with it.

Perhaps you're reading the wrong feminist literature.

Well, I'm not reading all the feminist literature obviously, but some of the stuff I've read is pretty laughable.

Maybe women need to remind each other of our power b/c society is still run for and by men

Fine, but do they have to denigrate men in the process? No, is the answer.

The rest of your reply has nothing to do with what I said. If I mysteriously touched some sort of nerve then I apologize.

BUT in the real world, I expect to be paid less for the same level of work and the same

I should hope you are getting paid the same as a man for the same work, since its actually unlawful not to do that.

No, you didn't set the 'crazy little angry woman' off. That was done by some of what's in the news the last few days. I mentioned it b/c it illustrated just how little women are heard or respected, no matter how big the monster on the other side is. It went to illustrating just how unequal the world is for women.

I should hope you are getting paid the same as a man for the same work, since its actually unlawful not to do that.
Actually, unless you're in a profession where the salaries are public, most people are 'free to negotiate' their salaries -- and some employers actually require employees to keep their salaries 'private', though some states are working on making that illegal. Filing a case with the EEOC requires evidence that is therefore mostly secret from the employee and hard to access. Even after correcting for women being out of the workforce for family reasons, women earn less.

Employers routinely acquiesce to men's confidence they are worth what they're asking for. Women with similar confidence are often labeled as pushy or aggressive... and 'pushy' women find their careers stall. I honestly wish that every man in the world could negotiate life as a female for just one month. I think they'd be surprised at how differently they are treated.

Just because it says on paper women should get paid equally doesn't mean that it happens. You only have to look at a lot of our favorite TV shows to see just how many times the female costar is paid less (sometimes half or less) than their male costar. When they complain, they're often written out. Some of them get tired of it and quit.

Fine, but do they have to denigrate men in the process? No, is the answer.

Uhm, when did i denigrate men?

I think at this point, this conversation has run its course. I have said my piece and I am really not here to have political discussions, especially ones that devolve into pointless arguments. I'm here to talk about Buffy. I wish you peace. I'm done.

You think a society where the matriarchy would be stronger than the patriarchy would be worse for you as a woman? I think it would suck for men which is wrong because I don't think they need to experience our struggles to understand them. I don't want to devalue your thinking, you are intitled to your own belief and that's very important. I just don't understand when women prefer the way things are now to an exaggeration of the women rights.

What don't you like about the popular feminist?

I haven't read all the responses here yet, and I'm not sure it's worth getting into it as no one is likely to change anyone's mind, only leave with hurt and bitter feelings. I got some long responses, essays too long to read, to other feminist threads here on BB that I never posted which explains just some of the problems I have with modern feminism that has become too popular and more still I could bring up. I marvel that women have the power to confront men about "manspreading" (but never mind fembagging) to the point they even change the rules and policies yet can't reform a system in need of reform or confront men who do much worse. I could talk about how disempowering a lot of the so-called empowerment is, or how it's actually more degrading to women. I could tear apart the "women get paid less" as well, certainly as any universal statement of social reality. But I see that as a waste of time. (And many of the problems I see with modern feminism also plague anti-feminism and a great many other ideologies.)

However, I do feel the need to waste my time telling you that you are entitled to your belief that women look out for women while men do not though that is not a world I've seen at all. As I've linked on BB before, a father forbids his daughter from having her genitals mutilated and her grandmother takes her in secret to have it done (her father was trying to protect her). Male judges called out the female judge that slut slamed a child and said she was not all that innocent in the violent rape that an adult male confessed to (and though she had consented to sex earlier with this adult, she could not legally give consent, and yet the woman judge felt as the child consented earlier then not only was it okay for an adult male to have sex with her, but then he could violently rape the child after she wanted nothing more to do with him). Another woman threatened a jury to find her nephew innocent of rape. I don't feel like looking these links up again and you'd only forget them later if I did.

As for myself...long story made VERY short...a high school boy sexually assaulted me when I was 13 (in a mental hospital, though many of us were there over an insurance scam) and it was upsetting, but I got away before he did too much, though it sucked I felt I had to stay on the girls' side rather than going into the game room share by boys and girls. But it got so much worse when his high school girlfriend and her friends came in and beat me bloody, because she was jealous and wanted to make me too ugly for him to ever sexually assault again, and did other lovely things like rub toothpaste through my hair. Every single day. I acted out to be put into isolation cell because it was the only escape from those girls.

Later (skipping more lovely stuff) a man sexually assaulted me, I got away more by happy accident (though he did worse than the high school boy), another punched me in the gut so hard I couldn't breathe while my wrist was bound, and I was carted to another building where a woman that those men called "ma'am" answered to, and that woman was a demon. She had me tortured (men following her orders to do so) by UN definitions and pumped me with serious drugs that did horrible things. She traumatized me so bad that after I got out I had a nightmare where I went to Mom in bed and saw that doctor's smiling face and literally woke up screaming.

I literally blacked a lot of it out after my grandmother told me to forget about it until Mom and Dad brought it up in the divorce trial (in trying to get me to choose one to live with, which was a battle of child support). Ah yes, after Mom got rid of the male creep lawyer she got feminist lawyers that I loathed (though I'm glad they got the creep lawyer in trouble), and long story short they knowingly and willfully lied on the stand and got me to live with an abusive mother, and I think they literally hoped Mom and I would be killed by Dad (almost happened) so they could use us as martyrs for their cause. In any case they were evil enough to knowingly place me with an abuser (women abusers are okay in their book, even if her victim is a little girl those feminists silenced).

Most weren't this bad, but generally speaking, females were worse to me than males, and its females more likely to slut shame than males, though many feminists like to pretend otherwise. Sure I met a lot of creep males as well. But also many good males and females. Later as a runaway on the streets I again bonded with many races and genders. Boys get sexually abused and exploited as well, sometimes by their own mothers. In short, I learned to bond with males and females and people of all races, but learned to be wary of all of them as well, which means I can't say "this demographic good, that one bad."

Getting too long (though I can go on for much longer) so I'll just end with that for these reasons I can never join your Cult of the Woman that thinks women good, men bad, or believe that women have my back while men are my enemies forever seeking to dominate me. This does not mean I therefore think men good, women bad. Life is more complicated than that.

I’m at a loss , I have no words for how horrible this is. With all my heart I am so sorry you went through that.
It's BtVS S6 that needs a feminist reboot.

The message of S6 is basically: "see what horrible choices you gals made when your male guardian was absent".

So a feminist reboot of Charmed, the show that portrayed them charmed witches as sex objects.
That should be an easy thing to do.
Maybe they should have a look at what real witches were like, not what Hollywood's thick as a brick depiction of them is like.

That would be cool... 3 dimensional, real characters... I would enjoy that.
Please, just, NO to this idea.

I wont get into the rest cos I cbf defending my beliefs on feminism here. I got tired out of all that. I am loving every moment of Greers life and stand mostly in line with her/second wave views.

I'd prefer a truthful doco series about actual fighting feminists over some tumblr generation shallow BS promoting "its whats on the outside that counts, accept it or ur a bigot".
